ANNUAL JURIED EXHIBITION OF PICTURE BOOK ILLUSTRATION JUNE 9-AUGUST 4, 2013 Picture This! JUROR’S STATEMENT It was such a pleasure to review the submissions for Picture This! The illustrations that I selected for the show stood out to me for their memorable characters, creative visual narrative or stunning technique. I am so fortunate to work with illustrators every day. First comes the idea, the spark of imagination that works in an illustrator’s brain like a grain of sand in an oyster shell. Next, an illustrator puts pencil to paper or pixels to screen to work over the idea and refine it. With color and composition, characters and setting, an illustrator can create an image that brings tears to our eyes or makes us erupt with giggles. This is the power of the illustrator. I am happy to encourage the artists in Picture This! to continue working on those ideas that nag them so that we may be delighted by their artwork for years to come. Thank you so much to Katherine French, Director, Jessica Roscio, Assistant Curator, and the Danforth staff for creating Picture This! to showcase and encourage children’s book illustrators and to inspire young art lovers. I am so grateful to be a part of the show. Joann Hill Curator, Picture This! 2013 JUROR’S BIOGRAPHY Joann Hill is currently Art Director at Disney•Hyperion Books in New York which publishes eveything from very young picture books to illustrated middle-grade and teen novels.
