The North Down Coastal Path stretches for 16 miles from Holywood to Cultra, Helen’s Bay, Crawfordsburn, Bangor and finishing just after Groomsport at Portavoe. Step off the train or leave the car behind and explore this stunning coastline at your leisure. Accessible at all times. Some of the stretches have limited wheelchair access. Groomsport Harbour Look out for the following points of interest while exploring the North Down Coastal Path: Seapark Recreation Grounds DA WC P F Close to Holywood Town Centre and the train stop, Seapark Recreation Grounds is home to a variety of sport and leisure activities. Accessible by train (Stop Marino or Holywood) Bangor Marina 7 Strickland’s Glen P Project 24 F DA Ramble amid the leafy pathways of a shady glen with wildlife ponds and a trickling stream which form part of the North Down Coastal Path. Accessible at all times Wheelchair access: Upper pond area only. Getting There: Glen Road off Bryansburn Road Roundabout, 1 mile west of central Bangor. Accessible by train (Stop Bangor West) P F S Project 24 is a unique temporary art project beautifully landscaped on Bangor seafront featuring 12 artist studios located in six colourful art pods. Wander in and around the pods, talk to the artists about their work or consider investing in an exclusive piece of art. The park provides a fun day out for all and features an 18-hole mini-golf course, giant pedal swans, Pickie Puffer train, children’s play area, children’s electric car track, splash pads and café. Accessible by train (Stop Bangor) 8 P F Stroll along the promenade, past the prestigious Bangor Marina, to the Sunken Gardens where you will see the McKee Clock and Bregenz House, Headquarters of HM Coastguard. Eisenhower Pier DA P F Just a short walk from the promenade is the Eisenhower Pier. The mosaics on the Pier depict the Borough’s crucial role in WWII, including General Dwight D. Eisenhower’s historic send-off to the hundreds of Allied ships gathered in Bangor Bay before the D-Day liberation of Europe. Under the pier is a colony of black guillemots, nicknamed the Bangor Penguins. For information visit northdowntourism.com or call 028 9127 0069 Bangor Marina Kingsland Play and Picnic Area DA P F From Eisenhower Pier, past the Long Hole, follow the Seacliff Road along the panoramic shoreline to Kingsland near Ballyholme Sailing Club, the Royal Ulster Yacht Club and not far from the picturesque village of Ballyholme. Play a round of pitch and putt with its breath taking views of Ballyholme Bay and the Antrim Coast, enjoy a game of tennis or make use of the great playground and picnic area. Ballyholme Beach and Park DA WC P F Paddle in the surf along the mile-long beach, a long-time favourite for families to take a dip and build sand-castles. Watch the kite and wind surfers on the horizon or take a walk along the sands to the National Trust nature reserve at Ballymacormick Point. Learn about the importance of Bangor Abbey in spreading Christianity across Europe and experience what life was really like for the monks in the Monk’s Cell. Accessible by train (Stop Bangor) Monks Cell, North Down Museum, Bangor North Down Museum, Bangor 11 Bangor Abbey Cockle Row Cottages, Groomsport Bangor Castle (Town Hall) Bangor Abbey DA P F DA One of the highlights of Bangor’s Christian Heritage is Bangor Abbey, associated with Saints Columbanus, Gall and Comgall. St Malachy’s Wall, adjacent to the Old Gate Lodge is the oldest surviving remnant of the original Abbey dating back to the 10th Century. The church has evolved over the centuries, destroyed by Viking attacks and re-built by the Ulster-Scots in the 1600’s. Today it remains a pivotal part of Bangor’s Christian community. The churchyard has many fascinating gravestones including a memorial to the Titanic’s assistant surgeon, local man John Edward Simpson. Accessible by train (Stop Bangor) 12 P This impressive building was built in 1852 for The Hon Robert Edward Ward. It is presently home to North Down Borough Council who use the mansion’s spectacular grand saloon as the council chamber. The building is situated in the grounds of Castle Park alongside North Down Museum and is just a short walk from Bangor Castle Walled Garden. CS Lewis visited North Down on many occasions throughout his life and regularly returned to the area. He enjoyed the beautiful view over Belfast Lough from the grounds of Bangor Castle. As Lewis himself once said "Heaven is Oxford lifted and placed in the middle of County Down". Step back in time and discover how a fisherman and his family lived at the turn of the last century in these lovingly restored cottages. The cottages host an exciting entertainment programme every weekend from Easter Sunday 6 September 2015. Grey Point Fort WC P F Explore this unusual wartime artillery site and enjoy its commanding views over Belfast Lough for which it was built to protect from enemy invasion. On the shore nearby is the obelisk marking the Measured Mile used by Harland & Wolff to monitor the speed of vessels such as Titanic. It was the town’s parish church from 1615 to 1844. In the graveyard are buried Robert Lloyd Praeger, the renowned naturalist and his sculptor sister Rosamund whose bronze statue, “Johnny the Jig”, stands in front of the children’s playground in High Street. Accessible by train (Stop Holywood) Holywood Maypole R WC P F S Explore thatched cottages, farms, schools and shops as you experience life from over 100 years ago. Chat to costumed visitor guides as they demonstrate traditional crafts and meet farm animals in the beautiful parkland of the Folk Museum. Discover more than 500 original artefacts at TITANICa including loan objects from RMS Titanic that were recovered from the bottom of the icy Atlantic and the original ship plans. Climb on and off majestic steam locomotives and explore horse drawn carriages, electric trams, boats, motorbikes, fire-engines and vintage cars in the Transport Museum. Admission fees apply. Early maps show a Maypole has stood on the site since the 1620’s. Today it is still the focus of the annual May Day Celebrations and fair, when local school children dance around the Maypole. The garden is divided into four different sections, each with its own horticultural personality. It also boasts two unique pieces of sculpture inspired by North Down’s maritime history. Accessible by train (Stop Bangor) Bangor Castle Walled Garden 17 Ward Park, Bangor Balloo Nature Reserve DA P Castle Park F DA This popular attraction is made up of two distinct areas - Balloo Woodland and Balloo Wetland. Explore the Wetland reserve and its abundance of wildlife including many plant and bird species, butterflies, dragonflies, newts, frogs and much more. Relax in the picnic area beside the ponds or discover what further wildlife the Woodland has to offer. The Woodland is full of mature native trees and woodland plant life, with a small pond to provide a sanctuary to some watery wildlife. Species to look out for include oak, speckled wood butterfly, goldfinch and foxglove. R WC P F S Stroll through this beautiful wooded wonderland which is an exhilarating experience throughout the seasons. Whilst there explore the formal gardens of the Town Hall, visit the award winning Bangor Castle Walled Garden and stop by North Down Museum to learn about the history surrounding the park and Bangor Town. The onsite Visitor Centre features exhibitions on the parks wildlife and provides free way marked trail maps. One of the way marked nature trails takes walkers through a deep wooded glen to the waterfall near Ireland’s oldest hotel The Old Inn, in lovely Crawfordsburn village. Cafe onsite. Great fun can be had at the children’s playground and collecting conkers amongst the leafy wood. Getting There: Use Bangor Road or Croft Park, Holywood. Accessible by train (Stop Holywood) Cairnwood P F This elevated forest of conifers overlooks Ballysallagh trout-fishing reservoirs, Clandeboye, Bangor, the coast of Antrim and you can see as far as Scotland on a bright clear day. Glen Lyon Park P F Eleven acres of woodland set along the steep banks of the quaintly named Twistle Burn, includes a picnic area. 20 Redburn Country Park P F Prepare for an energetic climb up the way marked trails of this steep park to enjoy great views of Belfast Lough from the Holywood escarpment. The dense canopy of beech wood is particularly spectacular in spring when the woodland is carpeted with bluebells. Red squirrels now scamper around the disused Bear Pit of the former private zoo kept by the original owners, the Dunville whiskey distilling family. In the quiet months (Nov-Apr) you may even catch whiting, codling or dogfish.
