Welcome to
BANGOR, HOLYWOOD
AND GROOMSPORT
Here in North Down we love our fabulous coastline,
stunning scenery and captivating history. There’s loads
to see and do, best of all it’s packed into an area just
16 miles long, only 12 miles from the George Best
Belfast City Airport and the centre of Belfast.
North Down’s biggest draw is 16 miles
of unspoilt coastline, which runs from
Belfast’s eastern edge at Holywood,
through Bangor to Portavoe just past
the quaint village of Groomsport.
The area is renowned both at home
and away for its restaurants, pubs and
nightlife. There’s everything from silver
service dining to the freshest of fish
served with chips from spuds grown just
down the road and washed down with
pints of stout from a traditional pub.
which include Bangor Aurora Aquatic &
Leisure Complex, Pickie Funpark and
Bangor Castle Walled Garden, worldclass golf, sailing and water sports - not
to mention good old-fashioned walking
along the coast and the breathtaking
inland sections of the Ulster Way.
The combination of first-rate facilities,
attractions, culture and heritage in
addition to a programme of highly
popular events makes North Down
a must see destination!
North Down is remarkable for the
diversity of its recreational facilities,

One of the highlights of Bangor’s
Christian Heritage is Bangor Abbey,
associated with Saints Columbanus,
Gall and Comgall. St Malachy’s Wall,
adjacent to the Old Gate Lodge is the
oldest surviving remnant of the original
Abbey dating back to the 10th Century. The church has evolved over the
centuries, destroyed by Viking attacks
and re-built by the Ulster-Scots in
the 1600’s. Today it remains a pivotal
part of Bangor’s Christian community.
The churchyard has many fascinating
gravestones including a memorial to the
Titanic’s assistant surgeon, local man
John Edward Simpson.

Council who use the mansion’s spectacular

The building is situated in the grounds of
Castle Park alongside North Down Museum

CS Lewis visited North Down on many
occasions throughout his life and regularly
returned to the area. He enjoyed the beautiful
view over Belfast Lough from the grounds of
Bangor Castle. As Lewis himself once said
"Heaven is Oxford lifted and placed in the
middle of County Down".
In 1998, as part of the CS Lewis Centenary

Shore Fishing
Shore fishing is popular along the
North Down Coastal Path from various
points including Ballymacormick Point,

pollack, sea trout and mullet. In the
quiet months (Nov-Apr) you may even
catch whiting, codling or dogfish. For
local advice, bait, tackle, and to

On the Coast
Family Fun
There are many ways to enjoy the
breathtaking coast of North Down.
- Pickie Funpark in Bangor, always a
popular attraction has recently been
updated without losing any of its
characteristic charm. It’s the ideal place to
start a fun day out for the family with its
adventure playground, giant pedal boat
swans, Pickie Puffer steam train and café.
- Discover the North Down coastal path
with its 16 miles of unspoilt coastline
that runs from its eastern boundary
at Holywood, through Bangor to
Portavoe, just south of Groomsport.
- Take to the high seas on one of our
boat trips or experience shore fishing
along the coast.
Short sea cruises depart from Pickie
Funpark at 2pm daily in July and
August and weekends in May, June
and September.
Fishing trips depart from the
Eisenhower Pier twice daily in July
and August at 6.30pm & 7.30pm and
weekends in autumn.
For more information or to download
one of our guided walks visit
northdowntourism.com or drop into
the Bangor Visitor Information Centre
- Take a walk through Castle Park and
Bangor Castle Walled Garden (open
seasonally) then stop off at the North
Down Museum where the 200 year
history of Bangor as a seaside destination
is full of fun and fascination. Admission is
free to each of these attractions!
- Bangor’s Town Centre is an excellent
place to stop for lunch in the many
family-friendly restaurants, cafes and
bistros, or alternatively, enjoy a picnic
in nearby Ward Park
- Go for a leisurely walk along the promenade
or catch a family flick at the Bangor
Omniplex to end the perfect day.
Indoor Fun
History and Heritage
Take the time to explore the rich vein of
Christian heritage running through the
landscape of North Down.
- Visit Bangor Abbey, First Bangor
Presbyterian Church, St Columbanus
Church of Ireland and North Down
Museum.
- Take a more contemporary look at
recent history, at the Ulster Folk and
Transport Museum and experience
the birth of modern transport in all
its glory, from horse drawn carriages,
electric trams, motorbikes to
fire-engines and vintage cars at
the transport museum.
On those days the sun fails to shine in the
North Down area, there are plenty of indoor
activities to entertain the whole family.
- Put your feet up and relax as the kids
enjoy the fun in one of North Down’s
indoor soft play areas. Burn off that
excess energy in Bangor’s indoor
go-karting arena or visit the brand
new Bangor Aurora Aquatic & Leisure
Complex.
- Discover the history of the area at the
North Down Museum where you will
learn about Vikings, Christian Heritage
and Bangor’s early days as a seaside
resort and best of all admission is free!
Whatever you decide to do in North Down be sure to visit
