Udta Punjab
Ishqiya fame Abhishek Chaubhey, who is known to
set his films in the heartland of India has helmed
the director’s chair. This film is being presented by
Phantom Films and it is touted to be India’s first film
to deal with the subject of substance abuse head-on.
What on earth can a rock star, a migrant labourer, a
doctor and a cop possibly have in common? Simple,
Punjab! 4 lives, 1 connection - ‘Udta Punjab’ takes
you on a trip like never before.
Above all, the movie is about the famed Punjabi spirit
that despite being fully down, has the audacity of
looking you in the eye and saying - Drugs di maa di!
Drugs Di Maa Di
The film revolves around four characters from different
walks of life, fighting the menace of drugs in their own
way. Shahid, whose look in the film has been inspired
from David Spade in the Hollywood film Joe Dirt,
essays the role of a drug addicted Punjabi rockstar,
Tommy Singh. Alia plays a migrant labour girl from
Bihar. Kareena is playing the role of a doctor who helps
a local cop (Diljit) bust the drug racket.
The film journeys into the artificial highs and the real
lows they face while treading the paths fraught with
mortal dangers.

Finding Dory
Director: Andrew Stanton
Star Cast: Ellen DeGeneres, Albert Brooks,
Diane Keaton
Genre: Animation, Comedy, Adventure
Rating: (U)
Release Date:17 June
Studio: Pixar Animation Studios, Walt Disney Pictures
We’ve been quoting “Just keep swimming,” and “Fish
are friends, not food” for the past 13 years, and we’re
finally about to see what comes next.
Even though it’s being released 13 years after its
predecessor, Finding Dory is set just six months after
the first film.
Dory, who is one of the greatest supporting characters
that Pixar has ever created, has now been moved
front and centre for the sequel. Though many may
only remember the fish for her forgetful, slightly ditzy
qualities, “Finding Dory” will bring out a more threedimensional character.
PVR MOVIES FIRST
MOVIE OF THE MONTH
This hotly anticipated animation adventure features a wild
array of brand new characters to complement the ones
you already know and love.
THE PLOT: It’s been six months since the events of
the first film. Dory suddenly recalls her childhood

it has everything I loved
about the first one: It’s

memories. Remembering something about “the jewel
of Morro Bay, California,” she sets off to find her family.
Accompanying Dory are Albert Brooks’ Marlin and Hayden
Rolence’s Nemo.
Dory arrives at the Monterey Marine Life Institute, where
she meets Bailey, a white beluga whale; Destiny, a whale
shark; and Hank, an octopus, who becomes her guide.
and Diane Keaton); Hank (voiced by Ed O’Neill), the sevenarmed octopus who becomes an unlikely ally with Dory
(Ellen DeGeneres); whale shark Destiny (Kaitlin Olson);
Bailey the beluga whale (Ty Burrell); lazy sea lions Fluke
and Rudder (Idris Elba and Dominic West); and Becky the
loon (Torbin Bullock). Oh, and the most adorable otters
you’ve ever seen in your life.
This is more than a journey to find her family. It is a search
for answers about her past. What can she remember? Who
are her parents? And where did she learn to speak Whale?
The friendly-but-forgetful blue tang fish reunites with her
loved ones, and everyone learns a few things about the
real meaning of family along the way.
REASONS TO WATCH
Creating a film around Dory, who stole many of the scenes
she was in in the first film, has already guaranteed a huge
buzz, considering that Finding Nemo made its place among
the 10 Best Animation Films ever.
THE DIRECTOR: Andrew Stanton’s movie resume reads like
a list of top animation hits. He has co-written every Toy
Story and Monsters Inc. film. He also wrote and co-directed
A Bug’s Life, Finding Nemo, WALL-E and John Carter.
“Dory is about embracing what’s unique about you. It’s
really about learning what’s quirky about you and turning
what you may see as a weakness into a strength,”
says Stanton.
But there is more. The endearing Dory will leave
you with a strong message for a cause close to the
director’s heart.
“I grew up by the ocean,” says Stanton. “I just thought
it would be a fascinating place to talk about life issues,
because it’s such a living thing and it represents both
life and death. Taking care of nature is part of the actual
narrative of Dory’s story.”
NEW CHARACTERS: Amongst the new characters are
Dory’s parents, Charlie and Jenny (voiced by Eugene Levy
PVR MOVIES FIRST
Dory’s character’s inability to develop close relationships
in Finding Nemo came to a satisfying conclusion when
she was able to recall Marlin and Nemo and found a way
to connect with them. The world is waiting to see where
Stanton and his team take Dory and the rest of the cast
this time.
Did you know ?
In the Spring of 2017, Tokyo Disney
Resort will launch a Finding Dory Ride.
Guests will board a submarine that
“shrinks” down to fish size, allowing
them to interact with the gorgeous
underwater world of Pixar’s Finding
Nemo and Finding Dory from the
characters’ perspective.
The look will be as close to the real deal
as possible — Finding Dory production
staff is helping to create visuals for the
attraction, and favorite characters from
Finding Nemo will make appearances.

TRIVIA
TRIVIA
01
With over 25 million likes, Dory is the
most liked character on Facebook from
any Disney or Pixar film.
02
Hayden Rolence replaces Alexander
Gould as the voice of Nemo, due to
having outgrown his original role in
Finding Nemo (2003).
03
The setting of the film was changed
from an aquatic park to a Marine
Biology Institute after the controversial
documentary Blackfish (2013) was
screened for the crew of Pixar.
04
This film marks Idris Elba’s last of three
Disney films in 2016, after Zootopia
(2016) and The Jungle Book (2016),
in which all are voice roles of animal
characters.
Those children or teenagers who watched the 2003 movie
would already be adults now with kids of their own, who
also love the movie. They probably even shared the same
happy feeling watching Marlin, Nemo and Dory overcome
their fear and solve their problems in the end.
One thing is for sure. Finding Dory will make you laugh,
and it will make you cry, but more importantly you’ll come
out feeling like you’ve just been given the biggest hug of
your life.
Yes! Finding Dory, the story that was never supposed to
be, but the one that needed to be told swims into theaters
and into our hearts.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY
Meryl Streep
Three-time Academy Award winner Meryl Streep is
widely acclaimed as the greatest living Hollywood
performer.
Here are 5 fun facts about the actor, who shares
her June 22 birthday with best selling author Dan
Brown and pop singer Cindy Lauper.
1. Her original career plan was to practise law. She
applied to Law School but slept in on the morning
of her interview and took it as a sign she was
destined for other things.
2. Streep received her first Oscar in 1979 for Best
Supporting Actor in Kramer vs. Kramer. She
accidentally left the trophy on the back of a toilet
seat during the ceremony.
3. After playing the role of a ruthless magazine editor
in The Devil Wears Prada, Streep donated all of her
stunning wardrobe—worth more than $1 million,
to charity; but kept the cool sunglasses she had
worn on set.
4. Meryl Streep suffers from corcoranophobia: an
intense, irrational fear of helicopters.
5. She owns a tabby cat with whom she practises her
lines to polish her acting. If the cat purrs loudly,
Streep knows she is doing a good job. No purr
means she must try harder.

7 Movies
That Inspire
You to Travel
2004: The Motorcycle Diaries
Interested in heading to the Latin-American continent,
but lack the funds? Never fear! Just plug in your DVD
player and sit back and relax as you watch Walter
Salles’ “The Motorcycle Diaries.” The cinematography
depicting snow-capped mountains, lush-green forests
and sun-kissed desserts is sure to have you glued to
your seats as you take in the beauty. The film features
shots from Miramar, Buenos Aires, Villa Gesell and
more. Interestingly, this film also inspired Guevara
themed road trips with travel agents answering a surge
of queries on a daily basis.
2007: The Darjeeling Limited
After their father’s death three brothers take a
trip across India to ‘bond’ and find some inner
peace. Whether they find the latter or not is
unanswerable, but they do find each other. The
film tastefully captures the deserts of Rajasthan
and the Indian Himalayas. So even if you can’t
take a camel ride across the deserts, you at-least
get to experience some of the grandeur through
the picturesque visuals.
2007: Into the Wild
A young college graduate gives up all his life’s savings
to rough it out in the wild. Sean Penn’s
“Into the Wild” follows Christopher McCandless as he
rides the rails, kayaks down the Colorado River and
makes his way across snowy peaks. The film features an
inimitable portrayal of American wanderlust-exuberant
and unstoppable. The movie also offers breath-taking
views of the North American landscapes, from Alaskan
peaks to gushing- gurgling rivers.

2008: Vicky Cristina Barcelona
Woody Allen’s “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” shows
the adventures and subsequent love affairs of two
young women visiting Barcelona. As you see all of the
gorgeous architecture, the sublime landscapes, we’re
sure you’ll be left wishing to hop on to the next flight
to Barcelona and also listen to some Spanish acoustic
guitar.
2008: In Bruges
Where in the world is Bruges would perhaps have been
the first question that popped into your head as you
read the sub-heading. Although the place doesn’t find
a mention in many travellers’ bucket list, Belgium’s
capital city has much to offer. Luckily, this film shows
viewers enough to make them feel like locals. Two
hitmen, played by Colin Farrel and Brendan Gleeson
play hide-seek with their boss in the city’s storybook
background. So let your eyes do all the travelling as you
stay glued to your seats, wondering if places like these
really do exist!
2011: Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara
The story of three friends who decided to turn their
fantasy vacation into reality, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara
took us on a breath-taking journey across Spain. No
movie had previously managed to showcase the enticing
allure of Spain as ZNMD did. Be it the underwater diving,
the colourful La Tomatina festival, or the thrilling sky
diving scene, it made us all dream of that perfect road trip
with our best friends. But most of all what struck a chord
was the individual journey of the characters, as they grew
and changed along with changing landscapes of Spain.
2013: Secret Life of Walter Mitty
“Life is about courage and going into the unknown.”
Ben Stiller’s “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty,” truly
lives up to this ideal. The film takes the viewer as
well as its central character on a wild goose chase
from Greenland through Iceland, whilst capturing
panoramic images of the volcano Eyjafjallajökull and
there’s also a slight detour to the Himalayas. Walter
Mitty inspires the viewers to stop being a couch
potato and go out and explore the unknown.

THE LIFE OF A LEGEND:
Woody Allen

WOODY ALLEN
Woody Allen is one of America’s most
prominent and versatile men. As director,
comedian, screenwriter, playwright, even
a clarinetist in a jazz band, he has made
waves in multiple creative directions.
Allen’s hard-hitting films have not only
won him Oscars, but virtually defined the
state of modern American cinema during
the 1970s and ‘80s.
Early Life: Allen was born into a Jewish family.
His mother Nettie was a bookkeeper at her family’s
delicatessen, and father Martin Konigsberga jewellery
engraver and waiter.
Allen’s childhood was not happy: his parents did
not get along, and he had a rocky relationship with
his stern, temperamental mother. At school, he
preferred baseball to studies, and impressed his
classmates with his amazing repertoire of card
games and magic tricks.
Early on, Allen learned how to make people laugh. To
raise money he wrote jokes (or “gags”) for an agent,
who sold them to newspaper columnists. At 17, he
legally changed his name to Heywood Allen and later
began to call himself Woody Allen.

ARCHITECTS OF CINEMA
His Films: Allen’s career breakthrough came in
1977 with Annie Hall, starring Diane Keaton. He
starred in, directed and co-wrote the movie, and
it went on to win four Academy Awards, including
for best picture, best director and best screenplay.
Manhattan, released in 1979, was his homage to
his beloved New York City, a setting for many of his
future films.
Over the next two decades, Allen produced mostly
hits, blending comedy and drama, including 1982’s
A Midsummer Night’s Sex Comedy—the first of
Allen’s films to star his future partner, Mia Farrow.
In 1986, Hannah and Her Sisters earned Allen his
second Oscar for best original screenplay and broke
box-office records, taking in $18 million. He and
Farrow maintained a relationship during this period,
but never married.
By the 1990s, Allen had gravitated toward producing
powerful low-budget films that included Husbands
and Wives (1992), Bullets over Broadway (1994),
Mighty Aphrodite (1995) and Sweet and Lowdown
(1999).
Allen began the new millennium with a string of
comedies and human interest dramas, including
Match Point in 2005, Vicky Cristina Barcelona in
PAGE 26
Bet You Didn’t Know:
• Allen wrote the concept for the film
Hollywood Ending (2002) on the back of
a matchbook. Years later, he found the
matchbook with the notes for the film on it
and made the film.
Woody’s Words: “I just felt there was something
instinctive in me that could make a movie. The
fact that I had never touched a camera, or done
any filming, or studying of movies—didn’t mean
anything to me. I just knew how to make it.”
• Only his lead actors are allowed to read the
full script before filming. But big or small,
all actors in a Woody Allen film are paid the
same salary.
• He writes his scripts on a typewriter, and
does not even own a personal computer.
Allen’s email account is managed by his
assistants.
• He regularly plays the jazz clarinet at small
venues. During his performance, no member
of the audience is allowed to address him.
If someone does, they are immediately
escorted out of the hall.
• After their release, Allen never watches any
of his films. When asked, he says: “Yeah,
well I hate them all.”
2008 and Midnight in Paris in 2011, for which he
won the 2012 Oscar for best original screenplay.
Three years later, Allen was nominated for an
Academy Award in the category of best original
screenplay for the film Blue Jasmine (2013).
In 2014, Allen released the romantic comedy Magic
in the Moonlight, starring Colin Firth. In 2015, he
turned back to drama with the release of his film
Irrational Man, which brought together Joaquin
Phoenix and Emma Stone in starring roles.
His Style: Woody Allen is one of American cinema’s
great experimentalists in narrative, a man devoted
to finding out as many different ways as possible to
tell a story. Split-screen scenes, empty frames, black
frames, subtitling (to show what people are really
thinking), a disembodied soul drifting off during sex,
a cartoon version of Woody, confrontations with the
younger self, the man up on TV versus the same
man on the street—there is almost nothing the man
hasn’t tried.

HISTORY
“It’s like Jaws, but in space,” wrote the professional
“reader” as he summarised the script for the producers.
And without doubt, Alien shares a kinship with the sharks
in the 1975 superhit; both are edgy thrillers about things
that can jump out of the dark and kill you.
Influenced by Star Wars and 2001: A Space Odyssey
for their depiction of outer space, and The Texas Chain
Saw Massacre for its treatment of horror, director Ridley
Scott has weaved a grisly sci-fi thriller of palpable,
nerve-tingling tension, with Sigourney Weaver – playing
warrant officer Ellen Ripley – in stunning form. For sheer
theatricality, Alien is difficult to beat
The film picked up the Academy Award for best visual
effects and anyone who has ever seen the notorious

“chestburster” scene will understand why Scott’s special
effects team, headed by Brian Johnson and Nick Allder,
deserved to win.
The Plot: After a space merchant vessel perceives an
unknown transmission as distress call, their landing on
the source planet finds one of the crew attacked by a
mysterious life form. Continuing their journey back to
Earth with the attacked crew having recovered and the
critter deceased, they soon realize that its life cycle has
merely begun.
Wow Factor: It was conceptual artist Ron Cobb who
came up with the idea that the Alien should bleed acid.
This came about when Dan O’Bannon couldn’t find a
reason why the Nostromo crew wouldn’t just shoot the
Alien with a gun.
