Message from the Chairman
I was very proud to be part of ELODS for our last show Jesus Christ
Superstar in October 2011. Existing and new members combined to
create a memorable show with a cast of over 50. An expensive show
to stage, but exceptionally good sales with a number of sell out
performances ensured that we made a financial surplus.
We are lucky to have a very talented pool of dedicated people who take their hobby
seriously to ensure that the standard of performance is close to professional level.
For those of you who have seen 42nd Street, you will know that it is heavy on dancing,
including a fair amount of tap, and we are indebted to David Adams who has choreographed
this show with an infinite quantity of enthusiasm and dedication.
We are also pleased to continue an ELODS tradition of inviting different directors to work
with us for different shows. This exposes us to alternative styles of directorship and often
brings new people to the Society as well. For this show, we are delighted to be working with
Debbie Marsh.
Of course, there are so many people involved in putting on a show, well beyond those
mentioned in this programme and everyone plays their part to ensure that the wheels turn
smoothly (well mostly!). If you would like to get involved and be part of ELODS, then there
are many ways you can help out – just drop me an email at [email protected].
In particular we are currently looking for an affordable storage space for props and sets –
could you help?
For our next show in October, we return to a well loved classic – Oklahoma! so if you can
sing and act and would like to take part, we start planning as soon as this show is finished. I
can let you know when rehearsals start and when the auditions will be.
In the meantime, come on along and listen to…The Lullaby of Broadway!
I hope you enjoy the show.

History and Synopsis
History
42nd Street began as a 1933 American Warner Bros. musical film directed by
Lloyd Bacon with choreography by Busby Berkeley. The songs were written
by Harry Warren (music) and Al Dubin (lyrics), and the script was written by
Rian James and James Seymour, with Whitney Bolton (uncredited), from the
novel by Bradford Ropes. The film was very successful at the box office and
was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture in 1934.
Musicals do not always make a successful transition from screen to stage,
so in 1980, Broadway producer David Merrick took a huge gamble with
his $3 million stage production based on the film. He hired legendary
director/choreographer Gower Champion, whose instinct for show stoppers
was thought ideal for the big production numbers. The show opened in
August 1980 at the Winter Garden Theatre, but tragically, Champion did not
live to see what a success the show was to become, as he died on opening
night. He left behind a stunned theatre community and the greatest hit of his
career. 42nd Street won several Tony awards and became the only American
musical to play nearly 3,500 performances over the next 22 years.
In a case of life truly imitating art, the West End production opened at the
Theatre Royal, Drury Lane on August 8 1984, with a young Catherine ZetaJones in the chorus. On a night when one of the producers happened to be
in the audience, a holiday and an illness took out both the actress portraying
Peggy Sawyer and her understudy. Zeta-Jones filled in and was impressive
enough to be cast permanently in the role shortly afterwards.
Synopsis
It is 1933 and auditions are underway for Pretty Lady, the latest show from
acclaimed producer, Julian Marsh. Young Peggy Sawyer misses her audition
and Julian has no time for latecomers. He is worried about some of the cast,
especially Dorothy Brock, the leading lady. Her last hit was ten years earlier,
but her sugar daddy, Abner Dillon, is backing the production.
However, the girls in the show and Billy Lawlor, the romantic lead, are
impressed by Peggy’s talents and they make sure that she is hired to appear
in the chorus.
Pretty Lady opens spectacularly, but an unforeseen disaster occurs on stage
which leads to a frantic race to save the show!

Mountview and Guildhall and is currently a member of staff at
Westminster Kingsway College. 42nd Street is Mark’s 52nd show with
ELODS!
David Adams – Choreographer
David is delighted to be choreographing his first show for ELODS and
has had a wonderful time working with the talented and dedicated cast.
David was last seen on stage for ELODS as Bun Foo in Thoroughly
Modern Millie. Prior to his association with ELODS, David spent 2 years
understudying and playing the roles of Killer Queen and Khashoggi in
We Will Rock You. Other notable roles include Albin/Zsa Zsa in La Cage
Aux Folles, Cole Porter in Red, Hot and Cole, Man in the Chair in The
Drowsy Chaperone and Danny in Grease. As Director or Choreographer,

Production Team
Frank Bundle – Stage Manager
Frank has been involved in amateur theatre for over 35 years.
He became involved with ELODS when asked to crew for Sweet
Charity in 1982. He has subsequently stage managed every major
production bar one and has been involved in the design and
construction of the sets for several of our more recent shows. In
2011 he was presented with the prestigious NODA Flame Award
for services to amateur theatre. 42nd Street is Frank’s 57th
production with ELODS.
Greta Jenkins – Production Secretary
Greta has been professionally involved in different aspects of the
theatre for many years. In addition to working in production,
actor's training and management, she has played numerous roles
for ELODS, including mad ghosts, mad trollops, mad aunts and mad
grannies. She firmly denies any type casting.
Eleanor Glazer – Properties
Eleanor has been involved in am dram for 25 years, and has been
with ELODS for the last 11 shows doing props and helping with
costumes. She thinks the group are a great group and has and is
enjoying every minute of it. She did make a cameo appearance in
Thoroughly Modern Millie as a drugged body in a laundry basket and
got rave reviews! Looking forward to the next 11 shows.
Hilary Thorne – Costumes
Hilary first came into contact with ELODS in 1993 when her
daughter Katy appeared in Kiss Me Kate. In 1995 Hilary started to
costume shows for ELODS, how that happened she isn’t really sure!
This is Hilary’s 32nd show with ELODS. On the whole it has been a
great pleasure, although sometimes a bit stressful! Hilary has met
lots of lovely people along the way, and wishes this cast and crew
a good week and lots of fun.

Cast
Corinne Roberts Dorothy Brock
Corinne Roberts made her stage debut as one of the three blind mice and
has been struggling to recapture that glory ever since. She has been
involved in “am dram” for longer than she cares to remember and has been
fortunate enough to play some great roles. For this show she has finally
accepted the passing of her youth and is looking forward to playing a more
mature woman!
Jude Stoughton Peggy Sawyer
Jude has been performing in “am dram” for quite a few years. Her favourite
roles include: Eliza Doolittle, Julie Jordan, Dorothy Gale and Diana Morales.
Most recently, Jude played Mary Magdalene in our last show Jesus Christ
Superstar. She is absolutely delighted to be playing the fantastic role of
Peggy Sawyer and has loved the exhausting rehearsal period (so much fun).
She is pleased to be performing with all her friends and especially her
husband Rich, and would like to thank her mum for looking after their two
children.
Lee Thompson Julian Marsh
This is Lee's first show with ELODS and at Wyllyotts. Previous favourite
performance credits include The Scarlet Pimpernel, Secret Garden The Musical,
Jane Eyre The Musical, Chess, Acorn Antiques, Full Monty and Elegies for Angels,
Punks and Raging Queens amongst many, many others. Favourite directing
credits include The Baker's Wife, Little Women The Musical, Lucky Stiff, Big River,
Hair, Me and My Girl, Crazy For You, Hot Mikado and Children of Eden. Lee is
grateful to ELODS for giving an old man a run out!
Henry Martin Billy Lawlor
Henry has performed in many shows around his home town of
Huntingdon, playing roles such as Malvolio in Twelfth Night and The Maniac
in Dario Fo’s Accidental Death of an Anarchist, as well as performing in
various musicals such as West Side Story and Hairspray. Since moving to
London to study Theatre Arts at Middlesex University, Henry had taken a
break from musical theatre. This is Henry’s first show with ELODS and he
is glad to be performing with such a warm, friendly and talented group of
people, and hopes that you enjoy watching the show as much as he has
enjoyed creating it.
Rosanna Grimes Maggie Jones
Since moving to the area 18 months ago to study Theatre Arts at Middlesex
University, this will be Rosanna's third show with ELODS. Her previous
acting roles have included Liesl in The Sound Of Music and Ariel in
Shakespeare's The Tempest. As well as 42nd Street rehearsals and university
work, she also likes to keep herself busy singing in a choir and playing violin
in two orchestras. Rosanna has loved rehearsing 42nd Street and would like
to thank everyone involved for being so lovely and supportive.
Adrian Rammage Bert Barry
Adrian is delighted to be shuffling back onto the Wyllyotts stage in yet
another ELODS show. Previous roles include Hysterium in A Funny Thing
Happened On The Way To The Forum at the Intimate Theatre, Bert Healey in
Annie at the Millfield Theatre and most recently King Herod in Jesus Christ
Superstar on this stage last year. Rehearsals have been a laugh and a
pleasure for Adrian working with such a talented cast and production team.
Helen White Ann Reilly (Anytime Annie)
Helen has been a member of ELODS for 21 years and obviously joined
when she was very young! She has enjoyed playing roles such as Eliza
Doolittle, Calamity Jane and Nelly Forbush. She’s delighted to have dusted
off her dance shoes for 42nd Street, having come from a dancing
background. She hopes you enjoy the show as much as she has enjoyed
rehearsing it!
Emma Wicken Phyllis Dale
Emma has been performing since the age of 5 and has enjoyed dancing in
a long list of musicals. She has been lucky enough to play Blousey Brown in
Bugsy Malone, Louise in Carousel and an orphan in a national tour of Annie
to name a few. Emma choreographed numerous shows at university as the
dance society president and acted as choreographer for FFBOS'
productions of Sweet Charity, Godspell and Little Shop of Horrors. This is her
first show with ELODS and she is very happy to be joining the lovely cast
for the tapping extravaganza that is 42nd Street.
Cast
Rachel Crisp Lorraine Flemming
Having spent many years performing with Acorn Theatre Company, and
more recently MeMe Productions, this is Rachel’s first show with ELODS.
She has had an amazing time during rehearsals and it's so good to be
working with Debbie Marsh and Dave Adams again! Mastering the art of
multi-tasking, she is also currently choreographing Oliver! with Acorn (June
2012) and finishing a PhD. Rachel wants to wish all the cast the best of luck
for show week, especially my dancing girlies (and Rich!)... our feet may be
killing us, but keep smiling!
Rich Stoughton Andy Lee
Rich has performed in many amateur and professional productions since
the age of 6 and can't see himself giving up anytime soon. This will be my
4th show with ELODS and I am very proud to be on stage again with my
wife Jude playing Peggy. I love the fact that I have learned to tap dance for
the show and I hope you enjoy the show as much as we have enjoyed the
rehearsals.
David Stone Pat Denning/ Doctor/ Ensemble
David is thrilled to be treading the boards with ELODS once again in such
an amazing show! He has really enjoyed working with the cast and its
fantastic production team; rehearsals have been a right laugh…. Come to
think about it, before rehearsals have been a laugh too! The Salisbury has
done very well out of us this show! He hopes you enjoy his portrayal of
Pat, but blink and you’ll miss him! He also hopes you enjoy the show, if
you’re staying for a drink after in the bar…. mine’s a red wine! Thank you!
David Dowse Abner Dillon
David has been performing with ELODS for many years and has really
enjoyed the chance to play yet another sugar daddy in this show.
Unfortunately he hasn’t been able to get properly into role by earning
millions in real life! Enjoy the show.
