The Orient of World Showcase Japan. •• Basking in the World Showcase Lagoon, at the entrance of Japan, a giant red Torii proclaims good luck to all who pass by its massive gateway. Across the promenade from the Torii, an ornate Pagoda invites the World Showcase traveler to explore the surrounding garden area. The garden is a peaceful refuge brimming with samples of living Japanese art such as the colorful Koi. These multicolored fish frolic contentedly in the Continued on page 2 Countdown to Epcot Center DisneyParksEarchive.com DisneyParksEarchive.com 15 days Orient nearby pond. Next to the pond, enshrined in a wooden belfry, is an ornamental bell. Just beyond lies the Katsura which specialized in yakatori cooking. Here, guests may pause on their journey to enjoy the taste of Japanese delicacies and tidbits. Looming over the shoulder of the Katsura are the castle towers of an ancient fortress . It is a reminder of times, in the not too distant past , when the secrets of Japan's innumerable treasures were staunchly guarded from the outside world. Through the open gate of the Entry Castle is a bridge spanning a protective moat. Once past the moat, the World Showcase traveler is in the lobby leading to the gallery. Here the truly rich heritage of Japan becomes self-evident. A preshow demonstrates a few of the early cultural exchanges between Japan and other nations. It was an interchange of gifts and ideas that enriched not only Japan and the immediate nations involved, but the entire world as well. In the Carousel theatre itself, this intriguing theme is continued as the magic of "Audio-Animatronics" combine with film and special effects to present the remarkable story of Japan. After the show, guests leave the theatre through a unique display area that becomes a show in itself. Each display delves into the little known facets behind internationally known products, or unveils the mystery concerning certain rituals of Japanese culture. The postshow area also serves as a prelude to an authentic Japanese department store where guests may shop for items representing the best in Japanese art and industry. Directly above the department store, the finest in Japanese cuisine is to be found. Overlooking the World Showcase Lagoon , the restaurant features an elegant lounge, a Tempura Bar specializing in temptations to delight the palate, and Teppanyaki dining where master chefs demonstrate their ski ll s at the guests' table , turning an already extraordinary meal into an exciting adventure in Oriental dining . China. • • The People's Republic of China, steeped in a cultural heritage that stretches from the predawn of civilization, opens its gates to a land of wonder and enchantment. Beyond the vast entrance gates lies the pavilion for the People's Republic of China. Bordered by a serpentine wall that protectively snakes its way around the outer perimeter, the mystery within is guarded by two stone lions who have kept their stern vigil in front of the main entrance for close to an eternity. But once past the triarched gate, the world of China transforms into a gently flowing, luxurious spectrum of colors and textures. Gardens are graced with the green of state ly pines. Willows bend their branches to the capricious spirit of a night whisper, and the fragrant scent of lotus blossoms is an allure too bewitching to resist. A color-lit lotus pond lies to either side of a pathway that leads to the ornately crafted "Temple of Heaven. " Inside , 6,000 years of dynastic rule can be explored in the delicate artwork and artisan love that was required to produce the original structure. A hallway composed of photographic murals depicting China, Today and Yesterday, opens onto a film presentation in which scenes of the Great Wall of China, the Yangtze and Yellow Rivers, Peking , Guilin, and Shanghai will be viewed through the magic of Circlevision . Adjacent to the Theatre is an exquisite Art Gallery with a moon gate opening. Its atrium courtyard serves to introduce the overwhelming beauty and opulent splendor of over 6,000 years of historical Chinese artwork and statuary. In the marketplace, decked with exotic streamers and banners, is a vista of merchandise ranging from the finest in Chinese si lk robes and jade jewelry to bamboo and lacquer chests, to handcrafted paper goods and fans. Between the marketplace and the Chinese restaurant is the towering stone throw elephant. Legend has it tha.t ff a rock is tossed on the pachyderm's back and remains there , luck will follow that person all the rest of his days. This then, is the People's Republic of China Pavilion. It is an unlocking of the past that leads to the present and beyond. Town Tree gained the finals with a win over third place finisher , The Scavengers in straight games. Environmental Protection then outlasted The Scavengers for their second place finish. The games were played in somewhat less than ideal circumstances, with the constant problem of rain. Plans are being formulated for a complete refurbishing of our courts at Little Lake Bryan and will be ready for the tart of our spring league. Thanks to all teams for a great summer and we are all looking forward to the Spring! There was even a shark consuming a young sunbather! Didn't think Little Lake Bryan had sharks, did you? A Scavenger Hunt tested everyone's Sherlock Holmes ability. The strong winds were tested on a special course during our fir t ever Watermelon Seed Spitting Contest. The course wa marked to a maximum of 27 feet. Butch Lightfritz took the adult diviion when his seed went past the end of the course! His wife, Joanne, was right behind with a second place seed.
