T his retrosp e c tive ex hibition
of Josef Albers (1888~1976) is
the first of its kind in Asia. The
works on view illustrate Albers's
m a j o r c r e a t i ve a n d r e s e a r c h
achievements at various stages
of his care er, including early
paintings, glass art, photographs,
furniture, and typeface designs
from his Bauhaus period, and
prints, formal studies, color
research, and his best-known
“Homage to the Square” paintings
from the time after he moved to
the United States. Apar t from
about 250 works from the Josef
and Anni Albers Foundation, the
exhibition also includes works of
Albers's students on loan from
the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation
in Germany.
The exhibition Love at First Sight: Contemporary Art Made in France,
Collection FRAC Nord-Pas de Calais, jointly held by the Kaohsiung
Museum of Fine Arts and the FRAC Nord-Pas de Calais, is an
apt representation of the experimental mindset. KMFA and FRAC
have specially chosen to introduce six relatively representative
French artists--Latifa Echakhch, Philippe Parreno, Laurent Grasso,
Fabien Rigobert, Julien Prévieux, and Bertrand Lavier, and two
well-known conceptual and environmental Taiwanese artists-Shi Jin-hua and Huang Pei-ying to join the exhibition. Through the
joint presentation of Taiwanese and French artworks, we expect
to provide a fresh and joyous viewing experience for viewers..

combines wedding photography with old houses and brings another beauty of contrast between modern times

During World War Two, many Taiwanese men were soldiers of Japan, the KMT party, and the
People’s Liberation Army. They did not know who they were fighting or dying for. With the help
of the Council of Cultural Affairs, Taiwan and Kaohsiung City Government, the port, Kaohsiung,
where Taiwanese soldiers of Japan and China had gone to war had been chosen, and a “War and
Peace Memorial Park” facing the ocean was built. There is a Glory Wall in memory of the patriotic
soldiers, a Memorial Lamp representing the voices of anti-war, a Statue Plaza for us to ponder on
the past, and Echoes of the Heart nearby, all that have a special commemorative meaning.
Lin Pan-song has been observing daily surroundings for a long period of time, and chooses to apply the Chinese
writing brush, which displays delicate techniques to make “Natural Homeland” and “The Heart’s Homeland” as
vivid as life.

of military dependent villages, we believe that when facing such a cruel policy,

The Beauty of Taiwanese Furniture
Special Exhibition
The development of Kaohsiung City from the Japanese Colonial Period to the present
has given birth to many intriguing stories and inspiring artworks. By displaying over
80 selected works from the KMFA’s collection, this exhibition allows viewers to look
back the transitions of Kaohsiung’s cityscape over the years. It is hoped that the
exhibition can not only enable viewers to relive the past but also inspire them to
reflect upon what the city has gained and lost during the process of its development.

This exhibition is curated by Huang Sun Quan. It presents Lulu Shur-tzy Hou’s works
on the subject of “Vietnamese Bride” from 2005 to 2009. Hou is a highly regarded
image artist. The display of the artist's works is arranged according to situations and
the venue's layout and lines of movement, and is not in a chronological order. This
approach allows visitors to read the realistic fragments of families' stories, which lets
them piece together Asian women's life stories that are collective yet inconsistent.
Future • Tradition • Puppet
In early 2009, Mrs. Ma generously donated to the Museum 42 works by her deceased
husband, a collection she has kept for many years. Created from 1954 to 1994, these
works include ink paintings, watercolors, prints, etc. Ma Pai-sui combined Western
watercolor painting skills and the essence of Chinese ink painting to express in his work
his love for Taiwan, while also rendering the scenery in many foreign countries he had
visited. His “ink and color” works represent a unique modern style, showing simplicity,
spirituality and characteristics of traditional literati.

Together with the “Josef Albers: Minimal Means, Maximum Effect” exhibition, the KMFA
holds this exhibition to introduce Richard Lin to local viewers. Although having been
staying abroad, Lin has played an important role in Taiwan’s modern artistic development.
His works are widely collected by major art institutions around the globe, including the
National Palace Museum in Taiwan which had never included any modern artwork in its
collection before. This comprehensive exhibition displays over 100 of his works during the
past 50 years, including his recent installation works. In this era with ever-changing artistic
styles, Lin is distinguished by his rigorous life-long pursuit of artistic idealism.
This exhibition showcases 45 sets of works, totally 410 pieces
by 36 artists, including several Spanish ceramic masters
such as Arcadio Blasco, Enric Mestre and Joan Llacer; Mia
Lauder, a new-generation Spanish ceramic artist; and Feng
Feng Lo, a Taiwanese artist who has been staying in Spain
for a long time. Rich in aesthetic and cultural meanings,
these works serve as a chronicle of the development of
Spanish ceramic art, allowing viewers to appreciate styles
of different regions and time periods in Spain’s ceramic art.
