MBT’s New Mobile-Friendly Website
As technology changes, Mount Baker Theatre constantly evaluates what we’re doing and what we need
Brad Burdick, Executive Director
to do to stay on top and provide the very best possible
experience for our customers. With this in mind, the Mount Baker Theatre board recently approved making a substantial investment in our website. It’s been several years
since we overhauled the site, and during that time we’ve realized that there are plenty of
things we can do differently and better.
One of the latest trends in web design is for web pages to be “responsive.” This means
that no matter which form of technology you use—computer, tablet, or smart phone—
you’ll get access to the entire site with the easiest navigation and best optimization possible. This means less zooming, squinting, and resizing, but with the full information
usually missing from “mobile optimized” webpages. This also means improved accessibility and navigation of our calendar of events, access to even more sneak-peak show
videos, and an overall improved and simplified purchasing process.
We’re working with an outstanding web design firm called Domain7. Their strategy:
“foster a highly collaborative research-based approach to architecting on-line experiences.” Based on findings from a thorough research and vision stage, their designers
will create a product with the user-experience top of mind—they call it “humanizing
the web.” With that in mind, we are very interested in hearing from you about what
you would like in our new site. Our expectation is that we’ll be making progress and
improvements on the new site until its completion early next year. To provide input just
send an email to [email protected] and put “Web Site” in the subject line,
or simply contact Marketing Manager Beth Melvin at (360) 733-5793 x 307, and we’ll
listen to your suggestions and consider them as we go through the process.
Once we complete this upgrade we’ll be one of the first performing arts centers on
the west coast to have a responsive website and such a significant improvement will be
much more convenient for our customers! Let
us know what you want. But in the meantime…
please enjoy the show!
Brad Burdick, Executive Director

“Grim and Fischer”
By Katharine Conrad
Mrs. Fischer may be elderly, but she definitely isn’t doddering. When she isn’t watching TV or reminiscing over beloved mementos, the spry old lady is playing pranks on
her nurse and generally enjoying her days, a
permanent smirk on her face. So when the
Grim Reaper literally comes knocking with
her final papers, Mrs. Fischer takes one look
at his foreboding black envelope and flushes
it down the toilet. She still has quite a bit of
living to do, thank you very much, and Mr.
Grim can just take his arched eyebrows and
be on his way. As the two square off, it’s as
impossible not to root for the feisty widow
as it is surprising that Mr. Grim isn’t as grim
as one might expect. In fact, the wide range
of heartfelt emotions portrayed by both
characters—including exasperation, sadness,
and joy—is particularly striking, considering neither one says a word nor changes
expression.
Yes, the entire production is dialogue-free,
and both actors wear full-face masks. Don’t
let that fool you—the characters are as fullfledged as those in any spoken production,
perhaps even more so, as the actors can’t
rely on words or facial expressions to carry
their performances. Instead, they act with
their entire bodies, paying strict attention
to every limb and muscle. This performance
style is rooted in commedia dell’arte, a form
of theatre that dates back to 16th century Italy
and uses body language and physicality to
convey character traits. The style’s trademark
component is its use of masks.
Grim and Fischer requires masks made with
extreme precision and attention to detail. With
just one mask per character, the expression
molded onto each one needs to be versatile
enough that it melds seamlessly into the
actor’s physicality at any given moment, no
matter the scene or emotion.
Wonderheads, the company behind Grim,
pulls this off beautifully by handcrafting their
own masks. It takes 50 to 80 hours to make
just one mask (you can view a time-lapse
video on MBT’s website), but the results are
worth it. According to Oregon ArtsWatch, Mrs.
Fischer’s smirk “amazingly can look stubborn, wry, sly, or sweet,” while Grim’s arched
eyebrows “can look forceful, imperious, or just
plain surprised.” MBT Program Manager Alison C. Terry swears that audiences “will think
the masks move during the performance, even
though they don’t. They’re phenomenal.”
Equally phenomenal is the show’s approach
to an inherently complex subject. Says Terry,
“This is a very, very funny and also tremendously human and relatable story. No one likes
to think about dying, and everyone wants to
fight it. This performance makes that fight
funny, joyous, and thought-provoking.”
Grim and Fischer begins its 8-performance
run on March 19 in the MBT Walton Theatre,
with Q&A after each show. Visit mountbakertheatre.com for details.

It’s a Feel-Good Time!
By Cindi Pree
It’s summer 2008, and a point in my
life where I’m completely oblivious to the
happenings in live theatre. A friend’s mom
has offered to treat the three of us to a girl’s
afternoon: lunch and the newly released
movie version of Mamma Mia! I admit, I
enjoyed the music of ABBA back in the day.
But…a musical based solely on their music?
Really? Well, hey, it’s a free afternoon to
hang out with friends, and I’ll at least enjoy
the nostalgia associated with the tunes,
so…I’m in!
And I did…enjoy the nostalgia, and the
tunes, and the dancing, and the absolute
feel-good story woven through and around
the music. This was completely one of those
‘whole is greater than the sum of parts’
situations and I had a blast! So much so, in
fact, that I acquired the DVD and invited
friends to come and watch it with me.
Again and again.
Now it’s coming to the MBT stage, and I
realized I still didn’t know much about the
Broadway version. In case you also happen
to still be oblivious to the phenomenon
that is Mamma Mia! here are some facts
from my research. Now in its 14th year on
Broadway, more than 50 million people
worldwide have seen the production, and
it has grossed more than $2 billion. It is
the ninth longest-running Broadway show,
and the longest-running jukebox musical
in Broadway history. It has played in 40
countries, on all six continents, including
several non-English versions (now I’m back
to trying to wrap my mind around that
concept). Mamma Mia! also set the record
for premiering in more cities faster than any
other musical in history.
22 | MBT Spotlight Magazine
For those curious about the process, it
turns out that several talented people had
a hand in turning a collection of ABBA’s
biggest hits into a story at the heart of
a musical. First you have ABBA, from
Sweden, topping charts repeatedly in
Australia, North America, and Europe to
become one of the most internationally
popular pop music groups of the 1970s.
Then producer Judy Craymer meets
ABBA songwriters Björn Ulvaeus and
Benny Andersson in 1983, and realizes
the theatrical potential of their songs,
such as “The Winner Takes All.” While
not completely opposed to the idea,
the songwriting duo also wasn’t exactly
enthusiastic.
Finally, in 1997, Craymer commissioned
playwright Catherine Johnson to write
a book for the musical. Andersson and
Ulvaeus got involved in the development
of the show at the beginning and fellow
bandmate Anni-Frid Lyngstad has been
financially involved and present at many
premieres around the world.
With a title taken from the 1975 charttopping song, the musical includes that tune
along with the story-telling magic in such
timeless songs as “Super Trouper,” “Lay
All Your Love on Me,” “Dancing Queen,”
“Knowing Me, Knowing You,” “Take a Chance
on Me,” “Thank You for the Music,” “Money,
Money, Money,” “The Winner Takes It All,”
“Voulez Vous,” and “SOS.”
I remember commenting, after watching
that movie version several years ago, how
well ABBA’s music had been woven into an
actual story that while not gripping, had
enough plot to be interesting. The story
itself unfolds on a tiny Greek island. The
funny and heartwarming (an overused but
apt description) tale of a daughter’s quest to
discover the identity of her father is presented
with enough unknowns to keep my interest
and an abundance of quirky characters to
love. Her invitation to three men from
her mother’s past brings them back to the
island they visited last 20 years ago, and
where old relationships are revisited and
new relationships are forged. The charming
story combined with ABBA’s well-loved tunes
created a feel-good, infectious experience that
I wanted to recapture.
Watching actors who seemed to be having
such fun doing something a bit different than
usual added to my movie experience. Now
I’m looking forward to seeing it on performed
on a stage with different actors and without
the beautiful Greek island. I’m not at all
concerned whether it will be the same great
experience, because I expect that whether it’s
the story or the music, on screen or on stage,
performer or audience, we’ll all still be having
the time of our lives!
See Mamma Mia! on MBT’s Main Stage at
7:30 pm on Monday, March 30, 2015.

A presentation of the Wade Bennett King Education Series
plays and musicals. The Education Series often features stage adaptations of well-known
children’s literature, providing an opportunity for young people to look at reading
and stories in a whole new way. To borrow
a quote from Faustworks Mask Theatre, the
goal of the Education Series is to “excite the
student to continue learning well beyond the
performance they have just seen.” For many
students this is the only live theater experience they have had.
Our 19th Education Series begins in
October 2014 with Cirque Mechanics and
extends through May 2015. Education
brochures for the 2014-15 Season featured the
names of all business sponsors and community donors whose support makes this program
possible. MBT is dedicated to honoring and
raising community awareness about the
strong commitment our sponsors make to the
children of Bellingham and surrounding
areas. For more information about the
Education Series please contact Alison C.

M
enopause…
the What?!!!
By Cindi Pree
Go ahead. Say it aloud. Say the word
“menopause” in a crowded room and watch
for the reactions. Happily, we are at least
past the days when such a word would never
even have been spoken in mixed company. Even among women, if the subject was
talked about at all, it was often with only a
whispered reference to “the change.” Even
now, if you ask people for their first reaction,
it’s likely to be less than positive. If you have
been so brave as to speak the word in a room
of mixed company, the men may cringe,
groan, avoid your eyes, or shake their heads.
Women might respond with dread, fear, or a
litany of agonized expectations.
Admittedly, it’s not the most pleasant of
experiences whether you are the woman
in the midst of menopause or anyone who
loves that woman. Studies have shown that
a woman’s cultural context often has a significant impact on her experience of this life
transition. Women in cultures that honor
aging and the elderly often see this as a time
of liberation. In the United States many
women still have a negative view of this as
a time of deterioration or decline, but some
studies indicate we also may be coming to
view this time as one of self-actualization
and liberation.
In any event, it is a universal experience,
and like many other such experiences it can
be improved with laughter. And that’s where
“the Musical” part comes in.
Since its debut on March 28, 2001, in a
tiny 76-seat perfume-shop-turned-theatre,
millions of people have enjoyed the show. The
story revolves around four women who are
lingerie shopping at Bloomingdales. The characters (Professional Woman, Iowa Housewife,
Earth Mother, and Soap Star) clearly have
nothing in common. Nothing except a black
lace bra and hot flashes, night sweats, memory
loss, not enough sex, too much sex, and more!
This musical parody is set to classic tunes from
the ‘60s, ‘70s, and ‘80s, including “Puff, My
God I’m Draggin’” and “Stayin’ Awake.”
Writer Jeanie Linders’ appeal to a sometimes-neglected market paid off with a show
that succeeded Off-Broadway, led to a number
of productions in major cities across the
county, touring productions, and currently is
housed at the Luxor Las Vegas.
This show is a great girls night out, but the
men who are brave enough to attend report
enjoying it equally. No matter who you see it
with, you’ll be dancing in the aisles, and getting a good dose of laughter. Who knows, you
might even leave feeling a little more liberated.
On the MBT Main Stage at 3 pm Sunday,
April 19, 2015.
