I like to congratulate you with the very inspiring, creative and dynamic edition 2012 of
Europa Cantat in Torino.
I was an honor to be your guest during the festival. I participated in a lot of interesting
workshops, I listened to beautiful choir-concerts, I had some interesting meetings and I
met so many inspiring people. In one word: the festival was a great success.
I was very impressed by the concert of 2 Augstus 2012 in the Auditorium ‘G. Agnelli’ with
the music of Eric Whitacre conducted by Ragnar Rasmussen and the concert of the
Estonian National Male Choir.
I thank you and the Torino-team for this wonderful festival.

Avant de m’envoler cet après-midi pour Abidjan, je voudrais encore te féliciter, toi et toute
l’équipe qui a mené avec succès de festival EC de Turin.
Vous avez réussi là un très grand évènement. En ce qui me concerne, je retiens
l’exemplarité de cette manifestation, résultat d’une préparation rigoureuse, et dans un
esprit de collaboration remarquable entre les services. EC Turin compte parmi les très
grands rassemblements choral que j’ai pu connaître.
Je suis également très heureux pour la FENIARCO de la crédibilité que ce festival aura
donné à ton association auprès des élus politiques.
Ton équipe a été d’un professionnalisme remarquable : de la programmation musicale à
l’organisation en passant par une communication qui ont fait mon admiration …. Et celle
de Jean-Claude Wilkens qui sera en charge de la direction des prochaines Choralies en
2013.
Remercie et félicite pour moi toute ton équipe qui a réalisé un travail extraordinaire dont
vous pouvez tous être fiers et qui sera riche d’enseignements pour les organisations
futures.

ho chiesto a Giuseppe l'indirizzo mail per farti avere dei ringraziamenti informali e non
ufficiali (per ora!) per tutto quello che Europa Cantat è stato per la città.
Scrivo in italiano perchè ricordo che lo capisci e lo parli.
Quando torneranno Assessore e Sindaco, penseranno loro a esprimersi ufficialmente, ma ci
tenevo a dirti che l'onda di EC ha conquistato la città.
Tutti cercavano i ragazzi con le borse ed è stata una bella iniezione di energia, fratellanza e
buon umore.
Le forze in campo sono state tante, la mole di venues impressionante, se c'è stato qualche
problema organizzativo per muovere questi grandi numeri, dall'esterno non si è percepito;
ed è rimasto solo il grande slancio e il gran numero di opportunità di ascoltare musica per
la città.

Abbiamo apprezzato la competenza e la serietà di tutto lo staff.

Dear Carlo, Sonja and everybody else involved in the organization of ECTorino,
Thank you again for inviting me to Torino - and thank you for a wonderful festival ! I was
actually sorry that I could only stay for just a few days - there was so much to do and so
much to see. I hope you had some time for holidays and to enjoy the rewards of all your
hard work.
The concert of the Latvijas Radio Koris was - for me - quite an event, with so many
enthusiastic and young people in the hall. Lasse's workshops and introductions were great
as well. But, for next time, I would really like to think of a way to make an even broader or
deeper connection between the professional and the amateur choral world during the EC
festival - focusing on "difficult" contemporary repertoire, vocal techniques and much more
- and I hope you will help me to give that shape, with your suggestions and comments on
how things went this time.
I also want to thank you again for your endless patience. As you may have gathered, I had
been working a long time on getting Ars Nova Copenhagen to Torino; due to
management changes at their end, it took them ages to confirm - and in the end, they
cancelled. I was very happy that the LRK could step in, but for a future time, I would
certainly prefer - as I know you would as well - that things were decided a bit earlier in the
day. Well, learning by doing, as it is called.
Thank you also for helping me to bring my new colleague Juanjo Morales to Torino. It was
a great opportunity for him to see the festival and the LRK - apart from doing some downto-earth work with me on Tenso matters.

after a long holiday break I also want to add my greetings and praises for such success of
the festival to all.
Special congratulations to Sante for three things in particular:
- for vision that lead Italian Choral world to such development in the past years
- for strenght to keep the people who promissed the money to keep their promisses
- for trust into the young team involved in preparations.
Thanks also to Sonja for her “reservoir” of the experiences from past festivals.
It was really nice to see all and wonderful to work with you. I enjoyed enormously the work
in the music comission at the festival - even not being in the board in the time of Pecz
Festival I already volunteer to come and do it again

Dear friends,
I must say that as much as I talked to the people in Torino (and it was really quite a lot!),
everyone was happy about the festival!
I liked the phenomenon of orange lanyard – participants, whom I didn’t know, just
stopped me in streets or in concerts, to give their feedback or ask questions. Probably it is
was same for all of us, but for me it was first-time experience, and I was really happy to
answer them. And almost everything was positive, except some logistical problems we
already know.
Most important is, that the festival gave opportunity to our „choral congregation“ to meet
and share each other’s music. The amount of participants shows, that there is need for
such festival.
It was wonderful to work with all of you! And, of course – congratulations to Sante and
festival team, who has done HUGE work during last years!
See you in autumn!

Dear Sante, dear Management Team and Staff of EUROPA CANTAT XIX in Torino,
I would like to join my collegue Réka and the whole Hungarian staff with a big THANK YOU
for all friends on the Management Team for the very helpful assistance we had in Torino
before and during the festival.
You know it very well that learning the system of the festival and getting well prepared
needs a lot of earlier experience that you can get only by being involved in previous
festivals. In Torino we had this opportunity at every level and despite the fact that due to a
lot of engagements we could not enjoy only a very little part of the the wonderful musical
events, we could feel the very warm and heartful athmosphere which was created by your
very friendly and relaxed approach to everyone who needed a helping hand.
We could talk to a fairly high number of participants and guests during those remarkable
10 days and the general impression was very, very positive. Of course there are always
smaller and bigger problems - that is quite normal - but I think we could learn from them
very well. As Réka said you set the standard very high and we have to comply with the
expectations of all those curious eyes that are looking at Pécs and Hungary, expecting a
festival that will be at least as successful as the one of Torino.
The politicians of the City Council of Pécs were really very grateful and delighted by their
acceptance and both for the professional welcome they had in terms of protocole
programmes and the visit to the Mayor of Torino. I do hope this start of collaboration
between our cities will continue with future common projects and choral music will always
be there as a mutual link between our cultures. Thanks also on my behalf for treating our
decision makers in such a tremendous way.
We do know that the post-festival period is always very tough and busy for the organisers,
the athmosphere is still there but deeply inside we all are all a bit empty, missing all those
wonderful moments you have worked a lot for. But we would like to recall these moments
again of course, therefore I would like to invite you all next spring to Pécs and Hungary, to
have a nice weekend together, enjoying good food and wine beyong the joy of being
together, visit the next festival city and its beautiful surroundings and talk about
experiences and ideas.
I do hope it will come true and we can discuss details by the occasion of one of our coming
personal meetings.

Dear all,
Time flies… relentlessly.
After a few days of dismantling, catching some breath and going back to normal life, here I am
again with this e-mail, having all the Festival's images still fresh, alive and exciting.
It was a great "festa" for all, for the City of Torino and the Region of Piemonte, where a
marvellous journey was "staged": music, singing, art, passion, friendship, humanity, "food for
soul". The three guidelines (festa, on stage and soul food) joined pretty well with a beautiful
and welcoming city and territory, which accompanied us, sharing the experience with us
almost with surprise, through the whole journey.
Hoping not to be partisan and with the feeling of sharing also your own thoughts, it can be said
that the Festival was a success for us, who believed and worked for a long time on it.
The Italian and European (and beyond) choral world has offered its charming, musical,
creative, social and intergenerational face. How many young people under the arcades, in the
squares, parks, ateliers and in the villages and cities of Piemonte! But also people of all ages,
who let themselves to be involved and affected by the Festival: a wide crowd of cheerful and
respectful people.
The young team of the festival, supported by a talented group of collaborators, trainees and
volunteers, gave out its best with generosity and professionalism. We owe them a grateful and
sincere thank, and in particular to Carlo, Marco, Michela, Giuseppe, Annarita and Pier, who,
together with Sonja, were the main reference point for the team. But I would also like to
sincerely thank all of YOU and also the City, the Region of Piemonte, the authorities and
institutions that sustained us.
Five thousand and five hundred attendees in total, amongst participants, musicians, artists,
conductors, guests and volunteers, are an important number that gives hope also to the future.
Many receptions, meetings, lectures and presentations took place during the Festival, that were
useful for the connection between important European and international choral realities.
By gathering positive energies and common aims, it is possible to create highly cultural, social
and human events despite periods of economic crisis such as the one we are going through.
Thanks to all of you for believing in Feniarco, we hope that the experience was all it should
have been for you. It was an honour for us to have the Festival in Torino.
Now we are approaching all the final steps that will keep us involved for the next few months.
We hope to complete them as soon as possible.
I would like to conclude by wishing you a good return from holiday and the best success for
your activities. I hope that you have brought with you a happy memory of the Festival in Torino.

Dear Carlo, dear colleagues,
I am still feeling the vivid excitement and emotions of the festival: music, new friends,
festive air, Turin…I would have never imagined it could be so amazingly wonderful.
Frankly, in many occasions during those days, I got so emotional I could not help crying
with joy.
So many memories…First of all, I would like to thank you, dear friends, for your smiles,
which created that particularly warm atmosphere for our 9 o’clock briefing. I am very
happy I had the chance to be part of this great team. It was an honour for me to meet you
and share with you such an important step for choral music.
Carlo, you deserve a medal! Unlike all the others, you had not taken some rest before
joining us early in the morning at 9. Yet, you always made sure it goes unnoticed.
You always offered your calmness, your readiness of mind, your enthusiasm, and you gave
us incredible strength. Thank you! And thank you one more time for the festival days, for
the passion and competence you have showed while working on the project for all these
years. You are the best!
I am sure this festival represents a great leap forward for choral music, especially for
Italian choral music. I am sorry for those who could not be present in person, but its
positive effects will undoubtedly reach every single angle of our country.
‘Turin 2012’ is still alive, it lives in our hearts! Hopefully, this will lead to greater
promotion of similar events, to the development of this culture. We need it deeply to
“grow up” as individuals and members of a civilized country.
May I thank you all wholeheartedly for all that you have done. I do hope to see you very
soon - in the name of Music.

From Musicians:
(to Séverine Delforge): Well, it was beautiful to be in Torino, even if it was just a short visit
for me. The workshop went well, although I was actually expecting something else in
terms of location. (the initial idea of Carlo was to give a workshop in an architecturally
special place and work with the singers on how to use the architecture in the
improvisations). But they told me on Friday that it just didn't work out to find a payable
location on that particular night. So I did the workshop in a rehearsal space environment
(the blackbox theatre of Theater Espace) and it was a purely musical workshop in the end,
which was of course also fine. But Torino has such a wealth of architecture, so it was a
shame it didn't work out.
What I really enjoyed was giving the lecture for conductors on Saturday morning in the
congres centre. Some of the conductors who were in the workshop also came to the
lecture the next morning, and I was curious in how far I could get a real interaction going
in the more 'dry' environment of a lecture. It turned out the be very good and lively. Just
the right amount of people to talk and also do some things, then talk again. Great to
exchange with all these other professionals about the work that I do with the Genetic Choir
and my vision on genre-uninhibited improvisation.

Dear Sonja,
Unfortunately I had to leave Torino on Tuesday 31st, as we had another gig in France with
the Voice Messengers; therefore I couldn't attend the second half of the festival... I couldn't
find any time either to visit you in Torino for a relaxed discussion, but I do regret it.
Anyway, I wanted to thank you dearly on behalf of the Voice Messengers,, and for myself
too. I hope you had good feedbacks both on the concerts and on the workshops. My
impression was that the three ateliers I had went pretty very well - at least I enjoyed
doing them !
The Voice Messengers also enjoyed a great welcome in Torino, with a very good
organisation... I found that everyone in the EC team was quite peaceful and calm in spite of
the complexity of the situations. I have already sent a congratulation / thanks message to
Carlo.
And as I understood that you are very central in the conception and organisation, I have
to congratulate you for choosing Carlo !
I do hope we'll meet again soon. Please say hello if you happen to come to Paris some
day*. I don't really know much about Europa Cantat organisation, but I'd sure be interested
to know a little more on it.

Half of our choir attended EC Torino . We were all delighted . It was the first EC festival we
attended again as a group since Nevers in 2000 and the new members for whom it was the
first experience were amazed and enthralled . Once again , many thanks to all the people

Unfortunately, we could not meet in person in Turin. We had quite a busy week at the
festival, and I managed to visit the festival office only on Friday.
Anyway, I want repeat my gratitude of this year’s festival, which I found the most
rewarding of all the EC festivals I have participated. This was mainly thanks to the splendid
Händel atelier under the leadership of the charming and highly professional Filippo Maria
Bressan. For the first time at EC, we really felt that we managed to reach a good quality
performance – in just a couple of days.
Our own concerts were also truly enjoyable. The venues were great: the Conservatorio G.
Verdi, the impressive Baroque piazza in Venaria Reale and especially the tiny and very
romantic piazzetta at Pomaretto, a lovely mountain village. There, the villagers organized a
party for us and served us home-made traditional delicacies and their local wine.
Unforgettable! Everywhere, our music got a very warm response from the audience.
On a personal level, this trip was part of my extra long farewell to my very dear student
choir. Well, at 42, after 20 years of intensive singing, it is definitely time to find an “adult
choir”, though my heart is bleeding. But I was glad to see that again a new generation of
HOL choristers enjoyed the EC festival very much. I am sure that they will keep up our long
tradition (since 1979) of participating Europa Cantat regularly.
For my part, I wish you strength and courage to go on with your important work for
European choral music and culture. I hope that we have an opportunity to meet sometime
in the future. Maybe I will find a new choir that I can inspire to take part in the festival…

J'y ai particulièrement apprécié l'attention au corps et à la voix sans lesquels le chant
choral et le chant tout court ne seraient pas possibles.
Je vous souhaite d'ores et déjà bon courage pour la préparation d'Europa Cantat XIX.

Diesmal hat es leider etwas länger gedauert!
Aus meiner persönlichen Sicht habe ich Turin sehr genossen. Der Workshop mit Ragna war
wirklich sensationell. Ich (und ich glaube alle die in dem Atelier waren) habe wirklich viel
gelernt. Seine Arbeit mit der "pure Intonation" wie er sie nennt ist extrem interessant.
dabei geht er weg vom wohltemperierten Klavier und setzt die Intonation nur durch den
Klang der Obertöne fest. Dieses Thema ist mir zwar schon lange bekannt, aber ich habe
noch nie jemanden getroffen, der das auf so einfache Art und Weise darstellen kann.
Und seine Art zu arbeiten war generell beeindruckend. Einen Haufen von 150
Jugendlichen eine ganze Woche so unter Kontrolle zu haben. Respekt.
Was mit persönlich gut gefallen hat, war die relativ freie Zeiteinteilung an den
Nachmittagen. Es war nicht, wie sonst so oft, ein Stress von Termin zu Termin und Konzert
zu Konzert. Ich habe die Nachmittage und Abende genutzt um in einigen Workshops und
Konzerten noch weitere Erfahrung zu sammeln und Eindrücke zu genießen. Das Programm
war extrem vielfältig. Was aber nicht nur Vorteile bringt. Das durcharbeiten des
Programmheftes um die passenden Sachen zu finden war eine ziemlich zeitraubende
Angelegenheit. Ich finde, dass hier die Highlights nicht gut raus gekommen sind. Es war
eine Auflistung aller Angebote, egal auf welchem Qualitätslevel sich das dargebotene
Abspielt!

I want to say you THANK YOU, once again. I thought many times in these years that the
chorus world can make people better, can grow them in respect for others, in 'peace', in
the idea that everyone has a unique value and that all this put together can create
something magical and unrepeatable. I always thought that the chorus is first and
foremost a way of life. Here, all these thoughts were confirmed and found in your own
person and I can tell you today that you are a kind of ideal model for me. I didn't need a lot
of things to understand it... a few words, a few observations on your way to work and relate

Like to inform you about the workshop my companionsinger visited this morning. The lady, Nadia Sturlese,
did give this workshop, but it was a pity she only speaks Italian for an international group. My companion
singer tried to translate a little bit, but however, he is not a native speaker, so he did his utmost, but most of
the workshop passed away without understanding for most of the participants. Also her workingpaper was
only Italian language.The content was repeating, every time again, when other participants were asked to

was no break, and the location (Jammin) was smelling after a disco last night! The airco was terribly noisy,
when it was turn off, it was awful to be there. Sorry, it looks like a long complaint, but however, may be
Nadia will organise her workshop tomorrow a little bit different by working in groups, having more masks,
be aware of the shyness of people and perhaps assistance for translating by somebody who is familiar with
this singing technique. I really do mean this as a possitive input, so please, don't misunderstand me.

Non ci sorprenderebbe se domani (Mercoledì 08/01/2012) la metà dei partecipanti con intossicazione
alimentare a letto! Ci sarà già regolarmente lamentati della qualità del pranzo e la cena, dopo il pollo di ieri
(Lunedi, 07/30/2012) eravamo ancora una piccola speranza, ma stasera (Martedì 2012/07/31) ... che ha

10. Francamente, credo che questo è un imbarazzo per la cucina italiana. Un pezzo di frutta in uscita per le
vitamine tanto necessaria e saltata non deve essere un lusso. Abbiamo un grande senso il nostro qui, ma la
qualità del letto e pasti ogni giorno svolgono un ruolo piuttosto importante. La prima ci siamo trovati,
abbiamo pagato nella fiducia che la cucina italiana fosse bene! Ovviamente, non c'è molto da cambiare, ma
abbiamo voluto comunque avvertire!
La serata di ieri a Cuceglio è stata splendida. Voglio esprimervi, a nome mio e di tutto il Coro Alpino La
Rotonda, la nostra gratitudine per averci fatto questo “bel regalo”. Mi complimento per la perfetta

2012 for us is the 30th ''anniversary'' of our participation to EUROPA CANTAT
1st time was NAMUR and this one is TORINO with just 2 occasions when we were away (1985 and 1988)
when each of our 2 children were born.....A lot of pleasure and a lot of fun by singing.
We don't use to claim. But this year in Torino is quite different from previous festivals
1/ We know from previous festivals a lot of people and for us it has been very difficult and even say
impossible to meet them again. Why? Because not a warm music festive hall as usual where all people could
meet in one ''cool'' place... Piazza San Marco is such a wonderful piece of architecture. But for gathering over
3000 people for ''Open Singing'' and some other performances is not a proper right idea to our opinion.
Especially when it's over +32/33°c still at 23:00 pm in the beginning was a lot of people but more and more,
less attendants where present on the Piazza.
Wasn't it possible like all previous EC Festivals to organize main meetings and shows in a specific hall like
Lingotto or another Torinese Music Hall????
2/ Food I suppose you already had some comments of other EC attendants (unless they claimed in between

themselves but without writting to you) I do know it's not really easy to ''accomodate'' lunch and diner for
over 3000 people. But for lunch or diner, it it normal you serve same ''amount of calories'' for a young say
10/13a and same for an adult???? Also Italy is one of the most agricultural country of EU27.
How is it that most of meals consists of pasta (quite enjoyable - but when served with ''contorni''
(vegetables).... most of time, as for Lunch it has been pasta with...... a kind of ''quiche lorraine'' - but no
vegetables !!!! not very ofter fruits... - for Lunch we had ''hard'' nectarine'' - how can you imagine youngsters
eating that..Unless socalled ''VIP'' have a special treatment...We met several people who neither came for
lunch or diner in Giardini Reale due to this practice......Without talking about beeing on waiting queue for
time under strong sun.....This msge is sent to you just this thursday evening. May be a bit late to take any
action....But if it may help for a next future Meantime as we are still ''Ready to sing'' in Toring till completion
of the Festival

Fabulous experience. Wonderful atmosphere everywhere. Concerts at La Venaria unforgettable !
Just 1 negative remark : my atelier (A6) was definitely NOT an 'A' level. It should have been 'B', as the
conductor expected us to come prepared and be able to read music easily. It was not the case of many of
the participants (including myself ) so everybody was frustrated.
However, our maestro Federico Maria Sardelli remained courteous and patient with us. I would like to send

Buon giorno. Ho partecipato al Festival Europa Cantat a Torino con la mia famiglia dal 1 al 5 agosto. Per mio
figlio Massimo di 5 anni abbiamo prenotato e pagato anticipatamente (€ 75,00) tre giornate al Progetto
Speciale Music Kindergarten a seguito di conferma scritta da parte vostra (si veda e mail del 18 giugno sotto
riportata). Il primo giorno di attività io e mio marito abbiamo accompagnato il bambino al “Nido della
Musica”, struttura in cui si sarebbe dovuto svolgere il progetto. Purtroppo non abbiamo trovato quello che
avevamo prenotato e pagato. Le operatrici della struttura che avrebbe dovuto ospitare i bambini del
Festival non erano assolutamente informate dell’esistenza di un progetto musicale; ci hanno detto che gli
Participant accordi presi con l’organizzazione del Festival riguardavano semplicemente un servizio di baby-sitteraggio 08/08/12
senza alcuna attività di tipo musicale, che il nido ospita abitualmente bambini da 0 a 3 anni e che in quella
settimana erano solo 3. Ovviamente abbiamo ritenuto opportuno non lasciare il bambino, amareggiato e
deluso per l’aspettativa disattesa, in quella struttura e abbiamo dovuto organizzare in maniera diversa i
giorni di permanenza al Festival. Di ciò abbiamo immediatamente avvisato, prima telefonicamente e poi
personalmente, il Festival Office e il Music Office le cui operatrici ci hanno risposto che avrebbero dovuto
verificare quanto accaduto. Ad oggi immaginiamo che la verifica sia stata fatta. Per risolvere in via
amichevole la questione chiediamo il rimborso, in tempi brevi, di quanto pagato e non usufruito.

Dear Carlo, Gabriele and all the other tireless workers, On behalf of my choir, Bloemhof Accelerando from
Stellenbosch, I just want to thank you for the magic which was the Europa Cantat in Torino! For us, it was an
unbelievable experience: the venues, the sights, the presentations, the workshops, the concerts, the
excitement, the thrills, the joy of making and hearing music all the time. Our girls loved every second:
watching the opening of the Olympics at San Carlo, taking part in the parade the day after, our own
performances in Pinerolo church and at Veneria, the wonderful reharsals with Benoit Giaux in their Groovy
Participant Ladies atelier, the stunning concerts, meeting everyone at mealtimes, performing as 'warm-up act' for the 12/08/12
Real Group on the Main stage!!!!!, . . . . far too much to mention. The loving attention of volunteers (for
instance Laura, who accompanied us to Pinerolo, and Christine, at the Veneria venue), your smiles in the
office, even when you were too tired to speak. . . . all i can say is BRAVI!!!!!! Do not worry if there were some
glitches -- that is human. You, with your organisation, have changed the lives of our choir members - and I

Dear Carlo and dear organizers, I am writing you concerning my experience at the Europa Cantat Festival in
Torino. I selected the Singing Ladies atelier and also auditioned for it – as you know it. At the atelier I
discovered that the best part of the participants did not come prepared (and it was also a waste of money to
buy the scores, since 90% of them used photocopies) – which was not the organizers’ mistake (although this
could be very easily checked by the conductor). What really was annoying was that the conductor of the
atelier did not seem to be in charge of the situation at all. He tried to keep some sort of order, but he terribly
failed at that. For example when he reorganized the choir into two choirs (this meant changing the seats),
the whole “operation” took at least 10 minutes. He just seemed to be lost, asking the participants to listen to
him and to be quiet – which is an impossible task when you have to deal with around 50 teenage girls. He
didn’t seem to have any strategy how to organize the rehearsals. Taking 3-4 measures and making the choir
to repeat them time and time again is not a successful strategy. The 20-minute breaks usually were 35-40
minutes, losing precious time doing nothing. I am sorry to say but he really acted like a complete amateur,
and this was more visible since I had a very good experience at the singing week in Briancon. I can
sympathize with him, but as a paying client of the festival’s services I consider this unacceptable. I decided

to be honest and on the third day of the atelier I presented this to the representatives at the desk, asking to
be able to move to another atelier (I auditioned for this one so it would have not be a problem to learn new
scores – for instance, in a B atelier) and also possibly a partial reimbursement of the money I paid, since I did
not receive the promised service. None of this was possible, although I did not receive any explanation why.
The organizer who dealt with my problem was very nice, but she did not make any effort to really help me.
The only possibility was to do discovery ateliers during the rest of the festival – and since I had no other
choice, I decided to take this option. The discovery ateliers were quite all right, but this was not why I went
there. It was a mistake to be honest, since later I learned that there were other people from other ateliers (I
met three of them) who simply switched ateliers without telling anyone (maybe the conductor of the new
atelier), bought the scores and went on with it. I am quite disappointed because this is not what I expected.
This wasn’t the level of professionalism I was promised and for which I auditioned, paid and prepared, and
also the solution I was given was a convenient one for the organizers, but not for me. I don’t know whether
to expect anything from now on, since I was practically brushed off, but in the future I’ll consider it twice
before applying to any festival organized by the EC.

Dear Sonja, your message reached me immediately through the board of our choir. Unfortunately, we could
not meet in person in Turin. We had quite a busy week at the festival, and I managed to visit the festival
office only on Friday. Anyway, I want repeat my gratitude of this year’s festival, which I found the most
rewarding of all the EC festivals I have participated. This was mainly thanks to the splendid Händel atelier
under the leadership of the charming and highly professional Filippo Maria Bressan. For the first time at EC,
we really felt that we managed to reach a good quality performance – in just a couple of days. Our own
concerts were also truly enjoyable. The venues were great: the Conservatorio G. Verdi, the impressive
Baroque piazza in Venaria Reale and especially the tiny and very romantic piazzetta at Pomaretto, a lovely
Participant mountain village. There, the villagers organized a party for us and served us home-made traditional

delicacies and their local wine. Unforgettable! Everywhere, our music got a very warm response from the
audience. On a personal level, this trip was part of my extra long farewell to my very dear student choir. Well,
at 42, after 20 years of intensive singing, it is definitely time to find an “adult choir”, though my heart is
bleeding. But I was glad to see that again a new generation of HOL choristers enjoyed the EC festival very
much. I am sure that they will keep up our long tradition (since 1979) of participating Europa Cantat
regularly. For my part, I wish you strength and courage to go on with your important work for European
choral music and culture. I hope that we have an opportunity to meet sometime in the future. Maybe I will

Our choir, Pro Fun, participated in Europa Cantat Torino.
We enjoyed and found it useful very much, especially working with our atelier leader Lorenzo Donati, who is
a fantastic musician and person. We learnt from him a lot. We are also grateful to our shef Antonio Romano
in atelier "Sing it! Cook it!".
As you know we also had two concerts, one in Torino and another in Marene. Our programs based on
Hungarian composers like Kodály, Bartók, Bárdos, Liszt, Orbán, Szokolay, Petrovics, Halmos.

Dear Europa Cantat Committee,
We would like to thank you for the special 10 days that we spent in Torino. We are aware that you did your
utmost to provide for us and bring about a successful event. We would nevertheless like to convey our
comments and criticisms regarding different organizational aspects of the festival.
The Atelier
Most of us attended the B-10 workshop with the Latvian conductor Ints Teterovskis. It was a very interesting
workshop, we enjoyed his instructional methods, and the fun and humorous atmosphere of his work.
Although we sang in 3 unfamiliar foreign languages, most of us managed to learn the pronunciation, and
Ints' input of the traditional and cultural background of the songs was an integral part of our enjoyment.
The workshop was held in a hall that was not air conditioned nor properly ventilated, which did not help our
productivity.
The final concert was held in the Teatro Carignano, which is beautifully renovated, but not appropriate for
choral concerts. The acoustics were not good at all for us, and in retrospect, a different venue should have
been chosen.
The Food
The meals that were served in the hot humid, not air-conditioned tents in the Giardini Reale were not
generous and of low quality. People paid good money for these meals, and many felt humiliated to be

disappointing that many of us often chose not to attend the meals even if they were paid for. The locale of
the tents was inconvenient and too far from the Open Singing area.
The Open Singing
You provided 500 chairs for 4000 singers?! What were you thinking when you implemented such a plan?
Many of us never had a place to sit, and most had to sit on the ground, which was debasing, considering
that the open singing is a central fun activity of the festival and should be conducive to good comfortable
singing.
The Transportation
Providing the tickets for 12 Euros was an excellent idea. You could have improved the maps you provided
by adding next to every venue what buses reached it.
Venaria Reale
We were sold bus tickets to get to Venaria, but no one ever checked the tickets, so actually we could have
saved ourselves the extra expense. The bus service was terrible, with people waiting in the scorching sun
until too few buses arrived. We then proceeded to cram ourselves into hot barely ventilated buses, which
dumped us far away from the concert locales. Again there were insufficient chairs for all those attending the
concerts and people had to stand or sit on the floor, in hot poorly ventilated areas. If you took a look at the
audience, you could see a sea of people fanning themselves with the program or any available solution. The

Unfortunately, we could not meet in person in Turin. We had quite a busy week at the festival, and I
managed to visit the festival office only on Friday.
Anyway, I want repeat my gratitude of this year’s festival, which I found the most rewarding of all the EC
festivals I have participated. This was mainly thanks to the splendid Händel atelier under the leadership of
the charming and highly professional Filippo Maria Bressan. For the first time at EC, we really felt that we
managed to reach a good quality performance – in just a couple of days.
Our own concerts were also truly enjoyable. The venues were great: the Conservatorio G. Verdi, the
impressive Baroque piazza in Venaria Reale and especially the tiny and very romantic piazzetta at
Pomaretto, a lovely mountain village. There, the villagers organized a party for us and served us home-made
Participant traditional delicacies and their local wine. Unforgettable! Everywhere, our music got a very warm response 22/08/12
from the audience.
On a personal level, this trip was part of my extra long farewell to my very dear student choir. Well, at 42,
after 20 years of intensive singing, it is definitely time to find an “adult choir”, though my heart is bleeding.
But I was glad to see that again a new generation of HOL choristers enjoyed the EC festival very much. I am
sure that they will keep up our long tradition (since 1979) of participating Europa Cantat regularly.
For my part, I wish you strength and courage to go on with your important work for European choral music
and culture. I hope that we have an opportunity to meet sometime in the future. Maybe I will find a new
choir that I can inspire to take part in the festival…

Dear friends from Torino, first I would like to thank you for a wonderful hospitality and love that we
experienced from Italian people during the Festival in Torino! All.,.from common things such as
accommodation, all through the workshops and some excellent choral concerts, and especially the
exclusive visit to the extraordinary Venaria Reale! Total fulfillment with music and joy of life…and a strong
injection for our future work. Then, the opportunities for my choirs to perform at Open Singing (with a great
conductor and our old friend from previous festivals-Michael Gohl) as well as on our concert in Tempio
Valdese. 66 young people (students and their teachers-professors) from 3 Serbian choirs (St Stephen of
Dechani choir, the Isidor Bajic Music school choir from Novi Sad and Karlovci Grammar school girls’ choir)
were participating in 6 different ateliers, many discovery ateliers, the conductors’ and composers’ seminars!
The variety of knowledge, information and experiences was huge! The only “problem’ was that there were
too many things going on at the same time, and we just couldn’t decide easily where to go !!! I personally

Conductor “Eastern Orthodox music”. I am very glad that the participants were satisfied with the atelier and the scores
that I prepared them. I was very busy after the EC Torino with my Choral Workshops of Orthodox sacred
music in Toronto, Canada and Chicago, USA and later with some concerts in Vienna, and only now I am
writing this letter, which probably should have been sent to you much earlier… On our departure from
Torino I got the information from your Office (I think I talked to Francesca) , and the information is about my
engagement in the discovery atelier and the honorary for that engagement. Please inform me if I am
supposed to get a honorary for that. I actually paid for my participation in Conductors’ Seminar, and at that
day (August 2nd) I missed a good lecture by Timothy Brown, because I was conducting at my Discovery
atelier. That could be very useful for my participation in General Assembly in Toulouse this year, because
after EC Torino with my 66 singers and such a complicated and expensive adventure, not much money is left
for another choral activity so soon. I wish you a pleasant autumn season, good health to you all and good

Buongiorno, ho ricevuto la comunicazione relativa alla manifestazione Europa Cantat XVIII, ho visitato il sito
per capire chi, dove e quando facesse dei concerti per valutare se di mio interesse, ma il sito è totalmente
incomprensibile, sembrerebbe trattarsi di un seminario di studi per chi desidera cantare, mentre mi pare di
capire che vi dovrebbero essere dei momenti di 'spettacolo' fruibili, la mail Torino Giovani, attraverso la
quale ho ricevuto le info scrive 'Cori, orchestre e gruppi vocali propongono 50 atelier di studio e più di 100
concerti, in chiese, sale, palazzi, all'aperto.' Magnifico. Peccato però che dal sito non sia possibile capire chi

Avant de m’envoler cet après-midi pour Abidjan, je voudrais encore te féliciter, toi et toute l’équipe qui a
mené avec succès de festival EC de Turin.
Vous avez réussi là un très grand évènement. En ce qui me concerne, je retiens l’exemplarité de cette
manifestation, résultat d’une préparation rigoureuse, et dans un esprit de collaboration remarquable entre
les services. EC Turin compte parmi les très grands rassemblements choral que j’ai pu connaître.
Je suis également très heureux pour la FENIARCO de la crédibilité que ce festival aura donné à ton
association auprès des élus politiques.
Ton équipe a été d’un professionnalisme remarquable : de la programmation musicale à l’organisation en
passant par une communication qui ont fait mon admiration …. Et celle de Jean-Claude Wilkens qui sera en 07/08/12
charge de la direction des prochaines Choralies en 2013.
Remercie et félicite pour moi toute ton équipe qui a réalisé un travail extraordinaire dont vous pouvez tous

Solo due righe per ringraziare lei e tutti gli organizzatori della settimana magica che avete regalato a Torino.
Pur non avendo potuto assistere ai molti che mi interessavano tra gli eventi che il vostro Festival prevedeva,
me la sono proprio gustata questa bellissima manifestazione. Era bellissimo sentire l’eco dei cori camminare
per le strade della città, vedere tutte queste persone, giovani e meno, famiglie intere, aggirarsi sorridendo.
Che bella invasione questa delle magliette rosa. Ancora adesso, mi rendo conto, mi capita di cercare con
l’occhio qualche gruppo pronto ad un open singing.

La ns compassata piazza san Carlo è stata percorsa da un brivido di adrenalina e, per quel poco che conosco

congratulazioni perché il successo del Festival è stato sotto gli occhi di tutti e c’è stata una grande
partecipazione di pubblico! Da parte nostra siamo molto soddisfatti e approfittiamo per ringraziarti della
visibilità che ci hai dato e per avere segnalato il nostro progetto di collaborazione in diverse sedi (come
saprai, anche Rai3 se ne è interessata). Gli studenti sono stati ripagati dello sforzo ed erano molto contenti.
Abbiamo fatto molte belle foto e, come forse hai già visto, abbiamo cominciato a pensare alla
pubblicazione.
Carissimi, mi fa piacere ricevere vostre notizie: significa che siete ancora vivi!! Da parte mia non posso che

Dear managers of the festival EUROPA CANTAT XVIII Torino 2012, back in Germany, I would like to thank you
all again for your tremendous work in the preparation and the organisation of the festival, for your
friendship and for the present you gave me on Monday. It was a great pleasure working with all of you and
as we said - it is wonderful that we are still friends after these stressful times... I am receiving more and more
messages from happy guests who enjoyed the festival and are thanking us! Also, yesterday I watched a lot
of the videos and pictures - and I could see that we really had a great festival! ;-) So much music going on in 08/08/12
so many different venues, happy people, beautiful impressions from Venaria, helpful staff, volunteers (and

than 24 hours a day and still always full of good ideas and enthusiasm. The concept that the music
commission had decided on really worked out well and all participants will have a wonderful time to

Thank YOU for letting us the possibility to participte in your festival in so many ways! All of us enjoyed Torino
for 100%, we are still under the influence of the atmosphere. We definitely learned a lot, although I have
already participated in the Utercht festival in 2009, but this year it was even more intense. The best of all was 21/08/12
to follow the realization of the event from the arrival of the YEMPers until the end. EC is a long and complex
event :) I hope you had time to relax a bit, we will surely meet soon and I cannot wait to see all of you again!
Dear friends, I join my voice to the other ones to congratulate the whole team(s) that have prepared and
managed everything during this very special festival! I also wish to apologize for not having been able to
really help... I’ve been put in front of my motherhood responsabilities and it was the priority, eventhough I
thought that I could be more free for the work. Beside that, I was shared between the festival, Camille, La
Choraline and Witloof Bay, and it was really uncomfortable to feel that I couldn’t achieve anything fully, but I

have to accept it. Eventhough Torino is fantastic, such a big city is not an easy place for a little child, and I
had no choice but to bring Camille, as my husband and my mother were fully participating at the festival ;-) I
think that it is a “premiere” that a female board member in function has a little child, and well... Now we have
seen how it goes ;-) Having said all that, I have to say that I’m happy and grateful to have had the possibility
to live the festival with my family, and that Camille had the opportunity to see and listen so many new

Dear Carlo , How does it feel to be a free man again after four years of EC Torino? I want to congratulate you
on the big success of your festival. (I saw you on the square by the Jazz club on the last night but I did not
want to disturb you in that situation.) It was only in Turin that I realized how much of the work rested on
your shoulders - and probably on those of Marco. The two of you have given Italy and Feniarco a great
profile and have given the ECA invaluable impulses. You have achieved an artistic concept which
incorporated the traditions of EC, adding innovative and local aspects. The musical work and results were
astonishing; there were many young but also many older participants; some of the concerts by guest and 22/08/12
participant choirs were absolute choral highlights. We are all hugely indebted to you. I hope you are
satisfied and you were able to realize some of your aspirations in this complex international environment.
You seem to have led the music commission in the most exquisite manner! Thank you for your kind words.
As to my own role: I was happy to play this role and be of service, but it should be clear that this is no
obligation for any organizer and that artistic concepts can and must differ!Please accept my warm regards

word: the festival was a great success.

friends, festive air, Turin…I would have never imagined it could be so amazingly wonderful. Frankly, in many
occasions during those days, I got so emotional I could not help crying with joy. So many memories…First
of all, I would like to thank you, dear friends, for your smiles, which created that particularly warm
atmosphere for our 9 o’clock briefing. I am very happy I had the chance to be part of this great team. It was
an honour for me to meet you and share with you such an important step for choral music. Carlo, you
deserve a medal! Unlike all the others, you had not taken some rest before joining us early in the morning at

Dear Sante, dear Management Team and Staff of EUROPA CANTAT XIX in Torino,
I would like to join my collegue Réka and the whole Hungarian staff with a big THANK YOU for all friends on
the Management Team for the very helpful assistance we had in Torino before and during the festival.
You know it very well that learning the system of the festival and getting well prepared needs a lot of earlier
experience that you can get only by being involved in previous festivals. In Torino we had this opportunity
at every level and despite the fact that due to a lot of engagements we could not enjoy only a very little part
of the the wonderful musical events, we could feel the very warm and heartful athmosphere which was
created by your very friendly and relaxed approach to everyone who needed a helping hand.
We could talk to a fairly high number of participants and guests during those remarkable 10 days and the
general impression was very, very positive. Of course there are always smaller and bigger problems - that is
quite normal - but I think we could learn from them very well. As Réka said you set the standard very high
and we have to comply with the expectations of all those curious eyes that are looking at Pécs and Hungary,
expecting a festival that will be at least as successful as the one of Torino.
The politicians of the City Council of Pécs were really very grateful and delighted by their acceptance and
both for the professional welcome they had in terms of protocole programmes and the visit to the Mayor of
Torino. I do hope this start of collaboration between our cities will continue with future common projects

and choral music will always be there as a mutual link between our cultures. Thanks also on my behalf for
treating our decision makers in such a tremendous way.
We do know that the post-festival period is always very tough and busy for the organisers, the athmosphere
is still there but deeply inside we all are all a bit empty, missing all those wonderful moments you have
worked a lot for. But we would like to recall these moments again of course, therefore I would like to invite
you all next spring to Pécs and Hungary, to have a nice weekend together, enjoying good food and wine
beyong the joy of being together, visit the next festival city and its beautiful surroundings and talk about
experiences and ideas.
I do hope it will come true and we can discuss details by the occasion of one of our coming personal
meetings.

It was wonderful to work in Venaria Reale. We had nice working conditions in the rehearsal room, and the
galeria was perfect for performing the music by Pink Floyd. Unfortunately, half of the participants had to
travel back to Torino before the big group from Europa Cantat arrived, so we could not perform for a large
number of people, but my impression is that the singers loved it anyway. It was a magic experience.

I was surprised that so many participants showed up for the atelier. There were singers from Canada, Italia,
Cataluña, France and Holland, with an age span from early teens to people in their mid 60s. The venue
(officine corsare) was nice, but a bit too small for the group (I guess there must have been 70 or 80 singers
in the room). The staff at the place were very friendly (I understand that there is some kind of youth activity
centre) and took good care of all of us. The volunteers that were working there were also friendly and
helpful. You must give them kisses from all of us. The only real problem with the Officine Corsare was that

the PA system in the hall is broken. It sounds as if one of the amplifier sections is dead and the result is that
we were working with terrible sound from the accompagnement. There was no sound engineer there, and
we could not get any new PA system brought to the place. Of course, you could not know in advance that
the PA was broken - so I am not complaining about the working conditions - just telling you so that you
avoid to use that venue for other activities that require a PA system.

Caro Carlo,sono stato poc'anzi a Mondovì per la prova con la Montis Regalis. Alle 20.30, ora d'inizio della
prova, c'erano soltanto 3 violini, 1 violoncello e 1 organo. Ho chiesto spiegazioni, c'era solo una segretaria
che non sapeva bene perchè le cose andassero così ed ha cominciato a far telefonate. Ho aspettato come
uno scemo per un'ora mentre questa ogni tanto veniva a dirmi qualcosa come "adesso dovrebbe arrivare un
violino... non riesco a contattare la viola..." etc. Tra l'altro, il loro programma di prova prevedeva che non ci
fossero nè il contrabbasso, nè un violoncello (su 2), nè l'oboe, nè la tromba: dunque, se anche ci fossero stati
tutti i previsti, sarebbe stata una prova penosa. Ma erano solo quattro gatti, dunque impossibile far nulla.
Dopo un'ora di attesa ho salutato i ragazzi, la segretaria, e sono venuto via senza aver potuto far nulla. Ciò
che più mi ha infastidito è la totale mancanza di accoglienza e rispetto: sembrava che io fossi un bischero di 30/07/12
passaggio che chiedeva di provare con loro per mio sfizio. Ho telefonato a Baudino per chiedergli
spiegazioni di quella situazione penosa e lui invece di darmi il benvenuto e scusarsi m'ha risposto che non
poteva farci nulla, che non era a Mondovì e che dovevo relazionarmi con la povera tipa che aveva lasciato lì
a sbrogliare la matassa. Era quasi infastidito dalle mie richieste: un vero cafone. Domani abbiamo prova con
l'orchestra alle ore 10.00 all'educandato. Ti volevo dire che se l'orchestra tarda, che se l'organico non è tutto
presente, io abbandono la prova e me ne torno via. Scusa Carlo caro, non ce l'ho minimamente con te, so
che state facendo grandi cose, complesse e bellissime ed hai tutta la mia ammirazione, ma nel mio piccolo
caso i disagi stanno impedendomi di fare quello per cui sono chiamato qui. Un caro saluto,

Caro Carlo,I was looking for you after the final ceremony (Fantastica!!! I still have "piel de gallina"
remembering it) but I couldn't find you; just want to say ARRIVEDERCI & CONGRATULATIONS for the all your
work (also my compliments to your great team) who make this impressive and unforgetable Festival
possible. Maybe you are worried with some problems that happened with the organisation (considering the
huge amount of events, venues etc. it's absolutely normal!), but you must be very proud of the success of
this incredible event. I'll have always in my heart these intensive days in Torino with very exciting musical
moments shared with enthusiastic and friendly people! I'm very happy with my contribution to Europa
Cantat. My Discovering ateliers went very well: -Montsalvatge Atelier was well visited, I had about 20 singers
(well-balanced), so I could read all the music I brought, focusing on the more interesting and easy pieces of
Montsalvatge but also talking about other repertoire from this exciting composer. All of them were very
interested about this music and I had a fantastic pianist (Andrea) who was very helpful for the discovering of
the repertoire. The venue was perfect. -The trip to the Monastery of Montserrat was also a well visited
atelier, with very interested singers and conductors who were absolutely impressed about the quality of the
music. It was difficcult to find the venue (Magazzino sull Po), but at least was a very good choice, with the

perfect atmosphere for the sacred music (we even could perform the Cererols' Salve d'Ecos with the soloquartet singing from the balcony!) -who could expect this, crossing on Sunday morning a pub just beside
the venue with some drunk youngers singing other "spiritual" music ;-) ! -The Songs of the Sea atelier, it was
just a pitty the lack of information with the change of the venue in the second day and also the people who
leaved in the second day and couldn't be for the performance, but at the end we could perform a shorter
program with the guitar player (and the 3 Catalan tenors who helped us), and the people enjoyed it
(specially the "Director General de Cultura Popular" of the Catalan Governement, who was also very
impressed with all the Festival). I'm also very happy with the two workshops with the conductors. I had a
very good feed-back in both ateliers, and all the people who atended this sessions were very opened,
interested and active. So, once again, I leave Torino with a very good feeling, I met here friends for life and I
have the impression to have lived incredible and unforgetable experiences! Thanks once more for all and...
HAVE A NICE AND WELL-DESERVED HOLIDAYS!!! You have a friend in Barcelona, and please let me know
when you are again in Catalonia, so I can show you Montserrat or all you have interest to know, and, of

My daughter Natasha had a wonderful experience in the Childrens Opera Atelier. My wife Cornelia and
other daughter Olivia sang every night at the Open Singing and fell in love with Torino. One suggestion we
have for the future is that when the audience is asked to sing at open singing, all on stage sound
reenforcement be turned off!! Why?? The magic of the Piazza acoustic is lost when the speakers are on and
the Pilot Choir is louder then 1000 singers in the Piazza! Also, I have to say, if there had been a real grand
piano on stage the quality of music would have been vastly increased. Regardless of your financial

considerations I believe it was a big mistake to use an electric piano. Surely a good deal could have been

made for a 10 day long rental. Also, the piano in the Pilot Choir rehearsal room was so out of tune to be
virtually unplayable. I guess I truly had problems with your priorities. Lastly, I felt the selections for the song
book could have been improved upon. (I am very aware it is easy to be critical). Songs like "Love of My Life"
were so well recieved. Why weren't their others arranged from the popular music repertoire? It seems to me
that with so many young people attending the festival the repertoire should better reflect young peoples
tastes. In any case, many positive impressions remain, and many thanks again for the invitation to

Gentile Carlo,Grazie! Non so se è gradito, ma vorrei condividere questa osservazione: Malgrado il fatto che
l’atelier sul canto gregoriano fosse un atelier in categoria “B”, non è realistic presuporre molte esperienze nel
canto gregoriano. Così ho scelto in approccio abbastanza fondamantale, dai manoscritti al suono, alla
teologia, coprendo varie forme gregoriane e non pensando al concerto in primo luogo. Potevo scegliere
brani molto più semplici ma avremmo perduto un’occasione unica per molti dei partecipanti. Un giorno di 15/08/12
più sarebbe stato molto utile in vista del concerto; semmai dovesse essere possible per una prossima volta
estendere un atelier sul canto gregoriano a 5 giorni sarebbe davvero bene. Complimenti ancora per questo
evento indimenticabile e certamente motivatore per la vita musicale di tanti partecipanti! E auguroni per il

Dear Carlos, Your letter finds me in lovely Usedom with good weather and a wonderful group of singers and
conductors. Thank you very much for your heartful words. I was a bit unhappy not to have met you and your
wonderful team before I left Torino. So I can tell you now that this edition of EC was for me an extraordinary
one in many senses. Above all it had to do with your and Sante's philosophy of the festival which you carried
through all the possible resistances. This was inspiring me to give my best possible and me too I was very
pleased, that it was possible to create this magical moments for those we have chosen our profession. Yes,
the atmosphere in Piazza San Carlo was amazing also with the many Italian people which seem to have
enjoyed our singing and sometimes crazy acting. (I do not want to mention the old EC-generation which
was not satisfyed with the accustics - they would not have had better idea...) Everything was ideal, the CAF
which really were motivated to work heard and to give there best every day (we had some deep discussions 17/08/12
about professionalism and true engagement... :-) Unfortunately you did not get the chance to speak to
them once directly, but I hope you have done it or will do it, because without CAF, Alessandro and Matteo it
would not have been possible for me to do this job like it was. Also I was very happy that with Matteo you
found a tallented conductor, who after some days has checked what a powerful tool OS was and has thrown
himself into the job every day more. Please take my sencere respect for your great work! I am looking
forward working with you again or even just meet for a glass of great wine and let pass in memory all the

Caro Carlo,grazie per la mail. Mi pare che lo study tour nei giorni successivi al primo, grazie al preziosissimo
contributo di Beppe un favoloso volontario che ha sbrigato tutte le faccende "pratiche" di spostamenti in
maniera impeccabile, sia andato bene. Abbiamo sempre avuto occasione di trovare degli spazi per
chiacchierare tra di noi e con i docenti. Sono sicuro che il feedback da parte dei miei "studenti" possa essere
stato però, anche nei giorni successivi, variegato. Comunque un gruppo che cambia ogni giorno (e in questa
occasione era inevitabile, lo so) non favorisce una continuità. Ma diversi sono stati a me "fedeli" e abbiamo
intrecciato un touring costruttivo e divertente al contempo. Uno zoccolo duro di affezionati ha costruito
questo gruppetto a cui girava intorno un gruppo di avventori occasionali che non sempre risultavano
partecipi. Come sempre qualcuno si lamenta, o dei viaggi in tram, o del fatto che magari c'erano due atelier 19/08/12
da visitare e non volevano andare al secondo perché piaceva loro più il primo etc etc Ma i "capricciosi" son
stati pochi e a volte si sono smarriti dando a me e a chi mi ha seguito con spirito di curiosità e
collaborazione la possibilità di girare e "studiare" in maniera gradevole e proficua. Sicuramente il problema
maggiore è stato all'auditorium della provvidenza dove avevo quattro atelier da visitare. Ero d'accordo coi
docenti che avremmo potuto incontrarli separatamente. Il problema imprevisto è stato che giunti lì le
ragazze di EC mi hanno impedito di portare il gruppo in giro ma mi hanno costretto a dividerlo in quattro…
pertanto io ho girato gli atelier (3 perché Bressan ha deciso di sospendere prima) con un quarto di gruppo e
gli altri si sono sguinzagliati. Poi dopo un paio di loro si è lamentato con me perché non li ho seguiti tutti…

(to Séverine Delforge): Well, it was beautiful to be in Torino, even if it was just a short visit for me. The
workshop went well, although I was actually expecting something else in terms of location. (the initial idea
of Carlo was to give a workshop in an architecturally special place and work with the singers on how to use
the architecture in the improvisations). But they told me on Friday that it just didn't work out to find a
payable location on that particular night. So I did the workshop in a rehearsal space environment (the
blackbox theatre of Theater Espace) and it was a purely musical workshop in the end, which was of course
also fine. But Torino has such a wealth of architecture, so it was a shame it didn't work out.

What I really enjoyed was giving the lecture for conductors on Saturday morning in the congres centre.
Some of the conductors who were in the workshop also came to the lecture the next morning, and I was
curious in how far I could get a real interaction going in the more 'dry' environment of a lecture. It turned
out the be very good and lively. Just the right amount of people to talk and also do some things, then talk
again. Great to exchange with all these other professionals about the work that I do with the Genetic Choir
and my vision on genre-uninhibited improvisation.

rewards of all your hard work. The concert of the Latvijas Radio Koris was - for me - quite an event, with so
many enthusiastic and young people in the hall. Lasse's workshops and introductions were great as well.
But, for next time, I would really like to think of a way to make an even broader or deeper connection
between the professional and the amateur choral world during the EC festival - focusing on "difficult"
contemporary repertoire, vocal techniques and much more - and I hope you will help me to give that shape,

endless patience. As you may have gathered, I had been working a long time on getting Ars Nova
Copenhagen to Torino; due to management changes at their end, it took them ages to confirm - and in the
end, they cancelled. I was very happy that the LRK could step in, but for a future time, I would certainly
prefer - as I know you would as well - that things were decided a bit earlier in the day. Well, learning by
doing, as it is called. Thank you also for helping me to bring my new colleague Juanjo Morales to Torino. It
was a great opportunity for him to see the festival and the LRK - apart from doing some down-to-earth work

together with other national youth choirs tonight. Tomorrow morning, Norges Ungdomskor has to travel
home to Norway :( But Torino will live in our hearts forever.

Torino was the capital of choral singing for 10 days - now we look ahead to Pécs.
The City of Torino was "dressed in magenta" and ready TO welcome over 4.000 participants, almost 900
guest artists including soloists and orchestra musicians and almost 200 guests. Adding around 350 local
volunteers, the participants of the Youth Event Management Programme and other staff members,
around 5.500 people connected to the festival filled the streets, the squares, the churches and the halls of
Torino. There were well over 100 concerts and major musical events, presenting the musical results of
over 40 ateliers, the repertoire of participating choirs and guest performances. In addition there were
over 40 one-day discovery ateliers and numerous lectures and presentations for conductors and

SYC Ensemble Singers
We are honored to have premiered Francois Narboni's "LE STELLE" (text from Dante's Divine Comedy:
Paradise), commissioned by the Festival Europa Cantat XVIII Torino 2012. The work, for female voices and
harmonium, was part of the festival's 7 Composers for 7 Choirs project, which invites non-choral
composers to write works for choirs, in order to "create a dialogue between two often distant worlds, for
the benefit of all". Bravo, we say!!
