Discover Delgado Day was a Hit.
By Nick Ducote
Staff Writer
The halls of Delgado were graced with the presence of over a thousand high school students on
April 9. Schools from East Jefferson to Warren Easton toured the campus and were met with an amazing
welcome by students and faculty. The student life center was the main hub of the activity. The entrance to
the pit was decked out to show what the Student Media has to offer the incoming freshman class, and current
Delgado students.
The hype-man who can control a crowd, Mr. Bob Dunn, was the voice of the party. He welcomed
and motivated the crowd, while high school students and Delgado students shuffled in and out of the building. The flow of music and activities gave the event a party-like feel, giving the people on campus shot of
“adrenaline.” The whole atmosphere of the building was joyful and enticing for everyone that was there,
including local media from WGNO to NOLA Defender.

Discover Delgado Day was taken to another level when they revealed who came to visit. New Orleans celebrities Trombone Shorty and WGNO’s Tyler Wing were the highlight of the Student Media Day at
Discover Delgado. They greeted, signed autographs, and interviewed a few future Delgado students. Trombone Shorty even took pictures and selfies with the groups of high school students passing through the
student life center. There was also a dance off in the middle of the Student Life Center to the song “Happy”
by Pharrell.
The four-hour event flew by for everyone who participated. The New Orleans Voodoo players Marlon Favorite, and Skyler Green also made an appearance taking pictures with students. Moroch Entertainment, local restaurants, and other local businesses provided prizes for the event. Students and faculty of
Delgado Dolphin Media sponsored the games and activities at the event. Ms. Susan Hague and her Public
Relations class were the behind the operation with help from the Dolphin Radio and Delgado Television.
The overall day was a testament to what Delgado can do and what we have to offer here. The look on everyone’s faces was inspirational and really showed the school’s credibility.

Police: Utah mom admits to killing at least six of her babies
A 39-year-old woman in Utah told police she either strangled or suffocated
at least six babies immediately after she gave birth to them over a period
of years, a document shows. Megan Hunstman appeared in court Monday
where she is facing six counts of murder, according to Chief Michael Smith
with the Pleasant Grove, Utah, police department. She’s being held on $6
million bail. Over the weekend, authorities found the remains of seven infants
at a home where Huntsman used to live.
Florida day care center crash: Suspect to be held over weekend
A man charged in the alleged hit-and-run death of a 4-year-old girl at a
Florida day care center will remain in jail at least until a Monday hearing about
bail, a judge in Orlando ruled Friday. The judge initially set bail for Robert Alex
Corchado at $100,000, but prosecutors asked that it be revoked. At a hearing
Friday, the judge gave the state until Monday to file a request that Corchado
be detained until his trial. Authorities allege Corchado, 28, was behind the
wheel of an SUV that hit a car, sending the car into a Winter Park day care
center and killing Lily Quintus, 4, on Wednesday afternoon. Corchado, who
Florida Highway Patrol spokeswoman Maj. Cindy Williams said had gang
ties as well as numerous drug arrests, fled the scene then surrendered at the
Orange County jail, according to a tweet from the Sheriff’s Office. Child killed
after car slams into daycare He was charged with leaving the scene of an
accident with a death. Thirteen children were injured, as was one adult.

Carpenter who cut off his fingers makes ‘Robohand’ with 3-D
printer
Richard van As is recalling the moment in May 2011 when he sat in a
Johannesburg hospital waiting to hear if his fingers could be stitched back
on. Just an hour earlier, he had been in his carpentry workshop sawing wood
when the saw slipped and ripped diagonally through the four fingers on his
right hand. “It all happened too quickly to know what actually happened,” he
remembers. Rather than fear the outcome, or dwell on the repercussions of
losing his fingers, he was already thinking of ways to fix the problem, like a
true carpenter. After days of scouring the Internet he couldn’t find anywhere
to buy a functional prosthetic finger and he was astonished at the cost of
prosthetic hands and limbs which began in the tens of thousands of dollars.
But his online surfing paid off as it brought him to an amateur video posted
by a mechanical effects artist in Washington State, by the name of Ivan
Owen. Within five minutes of getting it fitted, people can actually use it.
Leonard Nel, Robohand Together, the pair developed a mechanical finger
for van As, but their partnership has also gone on to benefit countless hand
and arm amputees around the globe, through the birth of the company
“Robohand.”

Five children died at Children’s Hospital in 2008 and 2009 as a
result of contaminated linens, Fox 8 News reports
A rare and deadly fungus claimed the lives of five children at Children’s
Hospital in 2008 and 2009, according to a report by WVUE Fox 8 News.
The deaths, which were investigated in a report published by the Pediatric
Infectious Disease Journal, prompted at least one family to file a lawsuit
against Children’s Hospital in 2010. FOX 8 News reporter Sabrina Wilson on
Monday night highlighted something equally troubling: that information about
the deaths or the fungus was not widely disseminated in the community at
the time. The lawsuit and the study indicate that the fungus was transmitted
through contaminated linens and lead to five deaths between August 2008
and July 2009.
Was Tyreke Evans’ performance against the Thunder the best by a
Pelicans player this season?
New Orleans Pelicans guard Tyreke Evans was splendid on Monday night.
He attacked the rim and got into the paint with relative ease, many times
either making layups or getting fouled along the way. Evans finished with a
career-high 41 points in the Pelicans 101-89 upset win against the Oklahoma
City Thunder. He also had nine rebounds, eight assists and three steals.

it violates federal laws and verges on abuse. A group calling itself the

host of violations concerning students with disabilities.

Following a year during which the East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner Dr.
William “Beau” Clark described accounts of arriving at death scenes to
find people with needles still in their arm from a fatal heroin overdose, a bill
aimed at dealers to increase maximum penalties for heroin charges received
approval from the Louisiana Senate Judiciary C Committee on Tuesday (April
15). The bill: Senate Bill 87, sponsored by Sen. Dan Claitor, would increase
maximum penalties for heroin use and distribution from 50 to 99 years.
The debate: Claitor assured committee members the bill would not affect
mandatory minimum penalties; it gives judges discretion to extend maximum
penalties. The vote: Approved without objection. The voice: “If you want to kill

Picks

Coach Sean Payton is
one of the most unique minds
in the NFL today. His offense
is also one of the most intricate
playbooks in the coaching fold. He
comes from a lineage of coaches
that have won multiple Super
Bowls. Payton was the offensive
coordinator in Dallas for years
under coach Bill Parcels before
he became the coach of the who
dat’s. After becoming the head
coach of the saints, he perfected
his offense in training camp. The
New Orleans crowd that year saw
an electric offense that almost
scored at will. Paired with a “doit-all” offensive line and a rushing
attack that had speed and power,
the Saint’s looked like a contender.
The new quarterback, Drew
Brees, was also a huge factor,
since we hadn’t had a “smart
armed” player of his sorts since
Bobby Hebert was throwing the
ball around. The NFL was scared
of the Saints, and rarely stopped
them from achieving multiple
touchdowns. They came up short
in the playoffs to Chicago that
year, but it left a bad taste in many
of the coaching staff mouths. The
tweaks and changes to the offense
made them a stronger one every
season.
The stereotypical Sean
Payton offense came to life in
2009 when they won a Super
Bowl. The offensive line was
great at pushing every game and
winning in the trenches. The
core of players on that offense
was a diverse group of receivers,
a speed and a power runningback, and some great protection
for Drew Brees. The fact that the
quarterback had immense time
to distribute the ball wherever he
wanted was unheard of. The last
time someone achieved that was
Tom Brady during the Patriot’s
dynasty. Players like Devery
Henderson had “LSU Speed,” and
found ways to get open. While
Robert Meachem had finesse
and made big plays happen. The
always-reliable receivers Marques
Colston and Lance Moore were
the guys who no one thought
would get the ball, but would hurt
defenses when they did.
That encompassed the
way Sean Payton wanted his
offense to run. The key players are
PAGE 4
Saints Need Receiving Threats
there today with a steady stable
of receivers. The only thing that
is missing is that speed receiver
that the Saints need. This year
the Saints have brought in several
college receivers for personal
interviews and work outs that
have speed and can contribute
from day one if they are drafted.
Here are a couple of players Saints
fans should get to know before the
draft starts in the May.
Marquise Lee/ University of
Southern California
Lee is the
player that the Saints have
brought in twice now for one on
one interviews. The Saints will
most likely pick him in the first
round of the draft. Since the top
three receivers in the draft will
automatically go to some other
team, he is the next best guy that
can produce for us. Marquise
Lee is one player most teams are
sleeping on. He had a tremendous
sophomore year when he won
the Biletnikoff award, which
goes to the best receiver in
college football. He has been the
main player in USC’s gridiron
resurgence in the recent years.
Lee is one of the most
explosive college football players
in the past five years. He has great
speed and agility. He can get great
separation from defenders, which
is something the Saints are aching
for. The guy is dangerous after he
catches the ball. He flourished in
punt returns and kick offs, which
helped boost his draft portfolio.
Since the release of Darren
Sproles, the Saints need a good
return man.
He can fill in for two
players immediately and give a
jolt to the game, if he stays healthy.
He can be the guy the Saint’s pick
up in the first round to make a
serious run to the Super Bowl.
The reason why he has slid down
low on many teams draft charts is
because he struggled with injuries
this season. He has been a solid
player for the Trojans for the
past three years, but this year was
rough for him. He can become
that x-factor that the Saints need
at receiver. He has gotten healthy
and all of his surgeries went well.
So that is one thing off of the
checklist of worries NFL teams
have for him.
Donte Moncrief/ Ole Miss
The Ole Miss prospect
is another one of those receivers
that many teams are overlooking.
Moncreif is a deceptive player
who has become a great threat
for the rebels. He single handedly
beat LSU this year, and was the
main reason Ole Miss moved
the chains this year. The Rebels
stalled on offense on more than
one occasion this season. He was
the player who immediately did
something to get his team down
the field.
player instead? We’ll only know
on draft day; Loomis usually
drafts unexpected players, but it’s
players we usually need.
kick offs. He had the knack to lay
some big hits on players when
supporting his teammate during
kickoffs.
He had a great game
against Alabama, where he made
several NFL defensive prospects
look silly. His speed and ability to
run with the ball around defenses
is rare. He and only a few other
players in this draft have the
knack for making plays happen.
The only thing that is holding
him back from being from being
the best receiver in the draft is
his speed which comes and goes.
He will blow defenders out of the
water on some routes, but then his
speed shortens on other routes.
Its an odd weakness, but he’ll
run harder on certain plays and
then not on the other. He’s a great
athlete, but he needs to address
his route running. He can become
a starter for the Saints if drafted;
hopefully he fixes this one issue.
Brandin Cooks/ Oregon State
University
Landry is that physical
threat that many NFL teams
look for in a player when in the
playoffs. He can be the key factor
on a team when they need a tough
yard or two when playing a great
defense. He did great this year
against SEC defensive talent.
Odell Beckham Jr./ LSU
He is the hometown kid
that everyone is rooting for the
Saints to pick up. Beckham is one
of the top receivers in the draft,
and most likely won’t be there
when it’s the Saints chance to pick
someone. If he is there, then don’t
be surprised if Mickey Loomis
picks him up over another player
the Saints might need.
He is has been an
astounding player for coach Les
Miles and LSU. He is a smooth
runner that has great separation
and agility. Beckham has done
well after the catch, that’s where
he hurts defenses. He has great
vision and can run the ball well
on trick plays. Many of his big
plays came against Alabama and
Texas A&M, who are oozing with
defensive talent. The LSU product
can be a star in the NFL, if he can
find the end zone. He is a great
player but has only scored twelve
times in 34 starts in college. He
gets a ton of yards after the catch,
but when it comes to getting open
in the end zone to score he can’t
get separation from defenders
and he can’t get open.
His speed has been
called into question since LSU’s
loss to Ole Miss. He can become
a big-time player in the NFL, he
just needs to start working on
those three flaws. The guy can be
coached to work through those
weakness and flourish, given the
time. However, the Saints need
someone to be complete now and
ready to “go to war.” It’s a debacle
the Saints aren’t sure they want
to take on. There are many other
prospects that have an abundant
touchdown record compared to
Beckham’s. Do the Saints take
him, or do they draft a defensive
The receiver that is
the complete opposite of Odell
Beckham Jr. in the right way
is Bradin Cooks. He won the
Biletnikoff Award this year, and
broke OSU’s receiving touchdown
record (24) by several scores. He
also led the Pac 12 conference in
receiving yards, touchdowns, and
receptions. Cooks returned punts
and kick offs this season for the
first time and burned defenses.
He is an explosive athlete who has
a spring in his step. He has great
body control and can swoop and
swerve out of defensive players
grasps easily. The beaver product
has a great stutter step and has
quick feet. The best and worst
thing about him is that he is
short. Listed at 5’8, he has made
his career off of getting open and
finding small holes in defenses to
make a big catch or a touchdown.
The problem the NFL
and scouts haven’t figured out yet
is that size for certain positions
doesn’t mean anything. The
culture in the NFL hasn’t come
to conclusion yet that most of
the recent draft picks that are less
than six feet tall have won Super
Bowls in the past ten years. Cooks
is one of those enigmas, and the
NFL will see him dominate. He
will line up in the slot position at
receiver and many defenses will
overlook him. He could catch the
ball for an average of twelve yards
a carry. He did this in college, and
again, changed the perception of
many defensive minds on how
to properly defend an athlete of
his caliber. He looks like Darren
Sproles with a longer body and
faster legs. Sadly for the Saints,
the secret is out on Cooks and he’s
the third ranked best receiver in
the draft this year. If he does fall
to the Saints don’t be surprised if
they don’t hesitate to pick Cooks.
He can become a key figure to
push a team to win immediately.
Jarvis Landry/ LSU
The in-state prospect
that has many scouts raving
is Jarvis Landry. His fluid and
smooth running ability can make
your jaw drop. The other thing
that stands out for Landry is that
he is a physical player with a good
catch-and-go technique.
He had a great season
for the tigers making acrobatic
touchdowns whenever they
needed him to. The receiver
has a solid frame with no health
concerns. He has been a solid
contributor on special teams and
Georgia and Texas A&M
dreaded playing him, because he
outmaneuvered their defenses
to score several times. The only
knock scouts can put on him
is that he takes a while to get to
his top speed. He has the speed,
but it takes him a couple more
steps in his stride to reach his top
speed. He also struggled in press
coverage against some teams.
He’ll need to address that come
training camp, but it shouldn’t
be anything that will scare teams
from drafting him in the first or
second round of the draft.
Allen Robinson/ Penn State
The wide receiver is
viewed as one of the best athletes
to come out of Penn State in years.
Though State hasn’t had anyone
stand out in the NFL in recent
years, he is making it look hard
for teams not to like him. He has
long strides and is a tall prospect
that can make great moves to
run through a defense. He has a
long frame and can still add some
muscle mass to his body.
Robinson does great
fighting for the ball when facing
a physical defense. He played
against good defenses that fought
him throughout games, and he
won the battle a majority of the
time. He has a great jump catch
techniques; his jump ball was
one of the best in college football.
He has one of the largest catch
radiuses in the NCAA.
The weaknesses that
stand out for Robinson is that
he has average speed. He has a
great running ability with great
strides, but its not considered
“speed.” His focus can run hot
and cold sometimes. He also can
tip off defenders on his routes. He
didn’t sell his routes good enough
sometimes, which led to him not
being open, or the defender he
was playing against red the play
well. Robinson is a top talent
athlete, but he needs to seriously
consider working on his speed if
he is to flourish in the NFL. He
needs to work on this before the
draft, because several teams have
dropped him from their draft
boards because he doesn’t see it as
a problem.

USA World Cup Preview Wrestlemania XXX
By Nick Ducote
By JEFFREY BOUDREAUX
Staff Writer
This summer Brazil
is hosting the World Cup.
Though the country of Brazil
is still considered a third world
country, it still scraped together
enough money to make
several multi-million dollar
stadiums. The event will cover
twelve different parts of Brazil.
The world cup is a beautiful
unification
of
thirty-one
different countries. However, It
will give the world a look into
the life of the Brazilian people.
Their culture will make you
appreciate the uniqueness of the
country and what they offer the
world.
This year the USA men’s
soccer team is a confusing,
ragged bunch. The team that
we have to root for has always
had an identity crisis. The men’s
soccer team is littered with a
core group of players who have
remarkable talent. The team
has been overshadowed by their
losses in the past four years.
The key losses to higher quality
opponents, such as Brazil, has
haunted this years group of
players.
The team has a group
of veterans who push them year
in and year out, but seem to
lose their focus when playing
countries such as Germany, or
the Ukraine. The team is still a
work in progress, but one day
will become a world power in
the sport. The men’s head coach,
Jurgen Klinsmann, knows what
the team needs to win a World
Cup and to be recognized
as the best in the world. He
himself won a World Cup while
playing for his native country
of Germany. He also coached
the German team in the early
2000’s leading them to the final
stages of the World Cup. He is
one of the best minds in the
game. Klinsmann is known for
his defensive play and hardnosed technique as a coach. If
the men’s team doesn’t get too
far in this years match then
Klinsmann will have a stable of
players who will be prepared for
the next.
The men’s U.S. soccer team
is led by midfielder Michael
Bradley, and forward Clint
Dempsey. The two players
have been the primary leaders
of the team for the past eight
years. Dempsey, a journeyman
soccer star, who has played in
the English Premier League
and in the U.S., is hoping to do
something special this year. He
and several players on the team
are salivating for the summer to
start.
The negative press
and media scrutiny from other
countries and our own has given
the team a lot of motivation.
Staff Writer
The last couple of games that
were played have been mainly
comprised of players just trying
to make the team. The veterans
that have proved themselves
have nothing to worry about,
but the new faces in this year’s
group can make a name for
themselves if they keep up the
smart play. Youngsters such as
Julian Green of the German
“super club” Bayern Munich
is the face of the future. He is
one of those blossoming youth
players that will hopefully step
up and turn this team into a
contender. Though the offensive
side of the ball is oozing with
the talent to make the team go
far, the defensive side of the ball
can make many soccer fans look
away.
The team is comprised
of great soccer talent, but the
defense has let them down on
too many occasions. Players
like Oguchi Onieywu, John
Brooks, Edgar Castillo, and
Kyle Beckerman have been
absolutely terrible for the U.S.
The look of confusion on their
faces whenever they’re playing
is revolting for fans to watch.
The whole fan base of soccer
fans in the U.S. is screaming at
the television screen whenever
the groups of players are on the
pitch. The last several games
have been a test to see whether
or not some players such as
these few are worthy enough
to grace us again in this year’s
world cup. Hopefully we won’t
see them in U.S. soccer uniform,
if so then it’s going to be a long
summer.
The world cup is comprised
of several groups of teams to
play against each other. The
groups are alphabetized and
then whoever has the most wins
out of their group advances to
the next stages of the world cup.
Sadly for the U.S., we are in the
“group of death” for this year’s
world cup. The “group of death”
is usually comprised of several
of the best teams in the world.
That normally doesn’t happen,
but when it does it is hard for
analysts and soccer fans alike to
choose the winning team.
The countries the U.S.
has to face are Ghana, Germany
and Portugal. They have been
the soccer super powers in the
world for the past ten years. The
U.S. definitely has their hands
full, and they will need every bit
of talent and athleticism to win.
Be sure to look up the times and
dates for the world cup in case
you want to check out to see
how the team is doing on ABC
or CBS during the summer. We
all wish the best of luck for the
yanks! GO USA!

the 30th anniversary of this spectacle, virtually every living wrestler who ever was famous, along
with wrestling fans from all over
the globe, converged upon New

looked in the New Orleans area,
there were pro-wrestling events
to be enjoyed. At WWE’s fourday Wrestlemania Axxess in the

of the WWE signed autographs
and posed for photo opportunities with fans. The fans could also
peruse the memorabilia museum

Roberts, and Scott “Razor Ramon” Hall were among this year’s
inductees, and for the first time
in history, fans not in attendance
could view the event in its entirety on the recently launched WWE

The Smoothie King Center where
he appeared healthy and in good

Hulk Hogan, was master of ceremonies for this historic 30th anniversary show. Joining the Hulkster
in the ring were two other legends
who have rivaled Hogan in popularity over the years, ‘Stone Cold’
Steve Austin and The Rock. It
was a treat for the fans in attendance and for the millions watching at home. Three of the greatest
wrestlers in history to open up an
event of this magnitude certainly
did not disappoint the 75,000 plus
fans in attendance. The fans also
to cheered on the heir apparent to
the throne held by these three legends – Daniel Bryan, the leader of
the national phenomenon known
as the “Yes” movement.
As everyone knows,
America loves an underdog. Daniel Bryan’s not-ready-for-primetime physique (he’s 5’10 and 210
lbs.), his pure wrestling ability, his inspirational catchphrase
(“Yes! Yes! Yes!”), and his uphill
battle against “The Authority”,
Stephanie McMahon (daughter
of Vince) and her real-life husband Triple H (on-screen COO
of the company), has captivated
the WWE universe like no other
storyline since ‘Stone Cold’ Steve
Austin famously feuded with his
boss, Vince McMahon, in the late
1990’s. Being “screwed over”, a
popular phrase in WWE, by the
Authority since last year’s Summerslam, Sunday night was Daniel Bryan’s veritable “last chance”
to achieve retribution.
The opening match of
the actual pay-per-view was a
one-on-one match between Bryan and Triple H, with the winner
automatically earning a spot in
the main event alongside WWE
World Heavyweight Champion
Randy Orton and the number one
contender for the title, Batista.
The opportunistic Bryan certainly was looking for payback against
the 13-time World Heavyweight
Champion Triple H, the man who
had made the last 8 months of his
career a living hell. The seemingly overmatched Bryan defied
all odds by defeating the COO
by pinfall in a very good match,
much to the crowd’s delight.
Next up was a six-man
tag-team match where The Shield
(Seth Rollins, Roman Reigns, and
United States Champion Dean
Ambrose) absolutely decimated
Kane and the New Age Outlaws,
lackeys of Triple H. By the second
match in, it’s already a bad night
for the Authority.
As a change of pace at
Wrestlemania, this event featured
an inaugural 31-man over-thetop-rope “Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal,” which featured such superstars as Sheamus,
Dolph Ziggler, Rey Mysterio, The
Miz, Alberto Del Rio, and the
Intercontinental Champion Big
E. Langston. It was Cesaro, however, who took home the trophy
by picking up the 7-foot, nearly
500-pound Big Show, and tossing
him over the top rope.
One of the biggest superstars of the last decade, 14-time
World Champion John Cena, was
there to defend his legacy against
the patriarch of the cult-like Wyatt Family, Bray Wyatt. Although
the fans were treated to a great
match seeing each superstar kickout of their counterpart’s finishing move, the family proved to be
no match for Cena. Cena handed
Wyatt his first loss since debuting
last year at Summerslam.
And in what has undoubtedly been the greatest
Wrestlemania tradition of all, The
Undertaker once again put his
undefeated streak on the line, a
feat which began in 1991. Going
into this event, The Undertaker
was 21-0, defeating the likes of
former multi-time World Champions Triple H, Shawn Michaels,
Ric Flair, C.M. Punk, Randy Orton, Batista, and many others
over the years. This year, his opponent was Brock Lesnar, former
UFC Heavyweight Champion and
3-time WWE Champion. The
sellout crowd was stunned when
Brock Lesnar defeated The Undertaker after three F-5’s(Lesnar’s
finishing move), which brought
the streak to 21-1 and ended an
era in the process.
What do you do when
75,000 people are shocked and
upset over their hero going down
in defeat? You give them divas of
course! To calm the crowd, the
14-diva “Vickie Guerrero” Invitational for the WWE Diva’s
Championship was next where
294-day champion A.J. Lee successfully defended her title when
she forced Naomi to submit to
“The Black Widow”.
Finally, it was time for
the main event. The moment that
everyone has been waiting for, the
triple-threat match for the WWE
World Heavyweight Championship. Champion Randy Orton,
Batista, and crowd-favorite Daniel Bryan put on one heck of a
match to end the biggest night of
the year for WWE. This match
had everything. False-finishes,
interference from “The Authority”, and Orton and Batista temporarily working in cohorts to put
Daniel Bryan through the Spanish announce table via a Batistabomb/RKO combo. The crowd,
who was very vocal all night and
very pro-Bryan, expressed their
amazement in the form of a “holy
s***” chant, the highest honor a
wrestling crowd could possibly
give. Bryan was down and even
placed on a stretcher, but nothing was going to come between
this man and his quest for the
championship, as Bryan soon rejoined the match and forced Batista to tap-out to the “Yes Lock”,
while Orton was on the floor outside of the ring. I’m not sure if a
crowd has ever gone that nuts at
a Wrestlemania before, but this
was the culmination of an eightmonth journey that the fans took
with Bryan, and at that moment
not only was Daniel Bryan the
new WWE World Heavyweight
Champion, in essence we all were.
And that deserves a big, resounding “Yes! Yes! Yes!”

I met with John to talk about the
accident, we ordered coffee at PJ’s
coffee shop, where he drank a frozen granita for the first time in
three months after his accident.

John Provenzano, otherwise known as “Johnny Bullzeye”
graduated early from Jesuit High
School in his junior year, and is
currently studying at the University of New Orleans for a degree
in mechanical engineering. Following in his cousin’s footsteps,
John took an interest in working
on motorcycles. He started off
riding street bikes with his cousin. At the age of 17, John bought
his first motorcycle, a 2009 Kawasaki Ninja 250cc. One day while
out on a ride, John saw his cousin
fly past him doing about 150mph
with a girl on the back of the bike.
John says, “After seeing my own
family member scream past me
doing 150mph on a bike, I immediately craved larger engines.”
Riding at dangerously
high speeds is one of the perks
that many bikers talk about.
When asked what is so significant about motorcycles, John replies, “It makes you feel free, the
wind in your hair, the engine underneath you... Not to mention,
it’s only $13 for gas and $50 per
month for insurance.” John enjoys
the risk of riding fast, and is able
to do so because of his years of
patience and experience. It is important to be completely involved

John bought a Suzuki GSXR 750

John has been riding for
five years. He and his friends are
probably the loud engines that
you hear revving late at night, riding up and down the interstate.
There wasn’t much that could
keep him from his bike, including
bad weather conditions. He has
met some of his lifelong friends
through riding and has developed
a true dedication to the lifestyle.
On Jan. 19, 2014 John and 17
other bikers were on a group ride
to the coast. Five of them, including John, were going pretty fast
around turns, nearing 140mph.
They were in Bay St. Louis when
things took a turn for the worse.
John remembers going down
a long, winding turn at around
150mph, when it suddenly became very narrow. “A couple
of people went down with me,
but my bike—I slowed to about
120mph when I lost my rear tire
to gravel in the turn. My bike hit a
sign.” When his bike hit the sign,
it bounced back and hit John,
breaking his back, neck and ribs.
John was airlifted to a trauma
hospital in Alabama. He said he
remembers how loud the helicopter was, and the EMS staff shouting, but that’s where things fade
to black. John ended up breaking
the two top sides of his pelvis, his
femur, five of his ribs, and 14 spinal vertebrae. He also punctured
his left lung and bruised the right,
ruptured his spleen, lacerated his
right kidney, and got plenty of
road rash. He had a lot of nerve

John says, “I woke up three
weeks later in the hospital. My
mother was looking at me.” The
doctors told John that he would
never be able to ride again, because he may never fully recover
from this. John found out it would
be six months before he could
walk again. John is now able to
walk using a walker after only 3
months. Before John first woke
up, a couple of his friends came to
visit him in the hospital, but said
he wasn’t all there.
The accident showed
John how many people really love
him. “My family has been amazing through this. My sister is really
pulling a lot of weight,” John says.
John’s friends used Instagram and
other social media to raise awareness for a fundraiser at the Lakefront to help fund John’s recovery.

When asked how the

Just being able to sit and drink a

about food, and what things taste

it definitely taught me how many

Neil deGrasse Tyson,
the famous astrophysicist who
currently hosts FOX’s “Cosmos:
A Spacetime Odyssey,” gave a
spirited lecture to a capacity
audience at Tulane University’s
McAlister Auditorium. The
auditorium holds 1,968 people.
Despite a torrential downpour,
so many people showed up and
waited for hours in the rain
that many were unable to get
inside. Upon discovering how
many people had waited in
the rain to get into the venue,
Tyson commented that he was
“deeply moved.”
Although no one in
New Orleans could see it due to
the weather, Tyson’s appearance
at Tulane coincided with a total
lunar eclipse that he explained
“due to the amount of dust and
pollution in the atmosphere,”
would cause the moon to take
on a red hue. “It’s the color of
rose petals,” said Tyson, “but
some people are referring to
it as a ‘blood moon.’” He then
poked fun at an article with the
headline, “How to watch the
blood moon,” accompanied by
a photograph of the sun setting.
“This is the sun!” he exclaimed.
Tyson is a protégé of
Carl Sagan and holds a Ph.D.
in astrophysics from Columbia

complexity and serious nature
of his expertise, he has an active

Before the accident John
went to school for mechanical
engineering which he hopes to
get back to once he recovers. He
also hopes to get back to working
at Dragos, and lifting weights. Ultimately, John wants to be able to
ride again. “There’s nothing in my
life that makes me as happy as riding does,” he said.
The
presentation
started at 8 p.m., went on for
just under two hours, and was
followed by an audience Q&A.
Various topics were discussed,
from
the
controversy
surrounding Pluto no longer
being considered a planet, to
last year’s asteroid explosion
a mere two miles above the
surface of Russia, and a video
of the death of the comet ISON
as it passed over the sun in late
2013.
Before the Q&A,
Tyson ended his official
presentation by calling down
the house lights and showing
an image taken by the Voyager
satellite of Earth from the
center of the solar system.
The image, in which Saturn
was the dominating presence,
was requested from NASA by
Carl Sagan. Tyson described
it as an “interplanetary selfie.”
Earth is seen as a tiny speck,
roughly of the same seismic
significance in which humans
perceive stars. He then read an
essay written by Sagan as the
late astrophysicist reflected on
the relatively insignificant size
of the “pale blue dot.”
“That’s here, that’s
home, that’s us,” Tyson read.
“It is where everyone you have
ever heard of has lived their
lives. The agony of all our joys
and sufferings. Every hero and
coward. Every young couple in
love. Every mother and father.
Every superstar.”
During the Q&A,
one audience member asked
Tyson for advice regarding
how science should be taught
in schools. Tyson quoted
French aviator Antoine de
Saint-Exupery: “If you want
to teach people to build boats,
you don’t show them how to
cut wood, or thread rope, or
hammer nails. You teach them
to long for the open sea.” He
added, “If I had control over
science education, that’s how it
would be taught, and it would
assimilate curiosity more than
knowledge.”

Makeup: splurge vs. save
Is buying expensive makeup really worth it?
By Ashley Boudreaux Staff Writer
Have you ever wondered
why some beauty products are
way more expensive than others? Are the less expensive beauty
products really all that bad, or are
the expensive beauty products
just way too expensive? Is there
really that big of a difference,
and if so, why?
I buy Clinique's superior
foundation. It is a dermatologisttested foundation that is oilfree and has 15 SPF. I've always
bought this foundation because
it feels super light, but still covers
very well. Also, the price is very
reasonable compared to other
higher-end beauty products These were the thoughts
going through my head while
wandering around the popular
beauty cosmetic store, Sephora. Sephora, like many other beauty
product megastores, has aisle
after aisle filled with beauty
products. From primer to
concealer, to lipstick to lip stain,
they have everything imaginable. But how do you know what's for
you? Do you really need that $60
foundation; what’s so wrong with
the $12 foundation at Walgreens?
Let's admit: beauty products are
not particularly cheap. I decided
to buy some things at both
Sephora and Walgreens to see
what the big difference was,other
than the prices. SAVE: The foundation
I bought at the drugstore was
Revlon PhotoReady Makeup. I
bought this product because
I have seen many beauty
blogs praising its quality. This
foundation only cost $13. Revlon
PhotoReady Makeup covered
well and lasted a very long time,
but the only downside was that
it felt very heavy on my face. It
reminded me a lot of a foundation
I used to use,Makeup Forever's
HD, which is from Sephora and
costs around $45. Foundation

Lipstick ($22.) Urban Decay's
Revolution Lipstick is ultimately
my favorite because it has a built

throughout the day. Not only
that but it is also paraben, sulfate,
and phthalates-free. SAVE: When I went
looking for lipstick, I not only
wanted to find a different brand,
I also wanted to find colors
that matched high-end beauty
product brands. I am picky
with lipstick, so I didn't plan on
finding many that I liked, but I
was pleasantly surprised. Revlon
was my favorite of the lipstick
brands that I found. Prices
varied as to what type of lipstick
you bought (prices started
around $8.) As long as I wore
a lip primer or liner, the lipstick
stayed on without spreading well. There were also many lower-end
lipstick brand colors that were
very similar to high-end brands.
The Revlon lipstick that I bought,
Raisin Rage, looked exactly the
same as MAC's popular shade,
Diva. samples. A great bonus about
shopping at Sephora, or any
other beauty store, is that you
almost always get free samples. And for some reason, these
samples usually include primer! SAVE: I tried two But if you don't want to take your

slightly better, but I could easily
use either one. Overall, the products
time favorite is BareMineral's

Mascara. This product costs
around $18 and is also paraben
and phthalates-free. Primer SPLURGE: Primer
is one of those products that,
no matter what kind you buy,
they are usually all a bit on the
expensive side. But I never
mind spending a little bit more
on primer, because it lasts a long
time. Smashbox is my favorite,
and considering what size you
buy, the price can range from $10
to $50. Mascara SPLURGE: I have tried
many mascaras, but my all-
that I covered and reviewed were
great for their prices. I feel like
the only big difference between
most less expensive brands and
high-end brands is longevity.
Every “splurge” brand stayed on
longer than the “save” brands, but
that can easily be fixed by using
primers. You should try out your
own discoveries by comparing
and contrasting your all-time
favorite brands to some newer
less expensive makeup products.
You might be surprised with how
well they actually work!
SAVE: This may sound
crazy, but most primers I have
used over the years were free
“An Evening with Lady Sophia”
By Tara Johnson
Staff Writer
Lady Sophia’s "NEE" collection (NEE meaning the birth of) had its Spring/Summer Fashion show and it was
nothing less than a success. The Event took place at the Historic Maison Lafitte in Mandeville. The venue was
breathtaking and perfect for this night of fashion and flair! As guests arrived at the sold out fashion show,
they were photographed after walking the red carpet. The welcome reception took place at 7 p.m. where
guests were able to mingle over drinks & hors d'oeuvres. The “NEE” Collection presentation started at 8
p.m. and the show was impeccable. Guests were able to purchase pieces from the spring/summer collection
following the show. The trunk show was almost as exciting as the actual show. Guests were in total awe of the
amazing pieces that were available for purchase. Overall the event was a success and pretty soon the world
will know about Lady Sophia. I got a chance to talk to Lady Sophia herself about her fashion inspirations,
Kenyan ties, and what we can expect from the Lady Sophia fashion-line in the future.
Tara: I know your mom had a
huge part in your love for fashion, but who is your favorite designer and why?
Sophia Omoro: I am very eclectic in my fashion taste and my
closet has quite the global variety. However, I am attracted to
very tailored, edgy pieces with
great feminine construction.
My favorites evolve, but currently I am crazy about Alexander McQueen and Alaia. The
silhouettes of these designers
are amazing.
Tara: You’re like Superwoman!
Runway model, surgeon, now
fashion designer! How do you
balance it all?
Sophia: I am a strong believer
in living in the “now”. Now is all
we have. Yesterday is gone and
tomorrow is not promised. I
therefore believe in concurrent
rather than sequential living. I
have to balance the important
parts of life in a way that my life
today, will have been lived fully.
Balance is critical to a full, destined life. But achieving this is a
proactive and deliberate effort.
You have to want it, plan it, and
do it. We can all do it.
Tara: I think its amazing that all
of your pieces are made in Kenya, how did you come to that
decision?
Sophia: I feel that my overall
purpose on this earth, is to help
make someone else’s life better
and brighter. It is not all about
me, but about the bigger picture
of life. I know the reason that I
have been so blessed in my life
journey is to put me in such a
position. I cannot forget my fellow Kenyans. It takes so little to
make someone’s day better. Giving a steady income to, and elevating the talents of my Kenyan
team is the least I can do. I am
committed to this bigger cause,
even as I enjoy fashion.
Tara: What do you think are
some of your strengths and
weaknesses in the art of fashion?
Sophia: Much like the rest of my
life, I do not fit in a ‘mold”. I have
not been to any fashion school
or curriculum, therefore not formally trained. This may be seen
by some as a weakness, and perhaps it does make for multiple
steep learning curves. However,
not knowing “the rules” gives
me naïve permission to create
without limitations. This is liberating. Being Kenyan born but
living in the US also gives me a
unique eye and ability for cross
cultural creations.
Tara: What message or theme
are you trying to send out with
your oh so gorgeous pieces?
Sophia: My message is that it
is important to feel good about
yourself, and a wonderful way
of doing this is by looking good.
This opens your heart to receive
and give positive energy. Have
fun while living, look good
while doing it, and give back.
Tara: What inspires your designs?
Sophia: The emotion of joy. I
would hope that wearing my
pieces would take one to a very
happy place. I therefore look
for colors, prints and silhouettes
that could be articulated into
that single emotion.
Tara:What has been the biggest
challenge of launching Lady Sophia?
Sophia: Time and distance to
and from Kenya. You mentioned
balance. It is a tough one. Only
24 hours in a day, two transcontinental flights between the US
and Kenya. I am a full time surgeon, and also recently launched
my Foundation, “The Blooming
Lily” (this will empower women
to lead and fulfill their destiny
by overcoming physical, mental
and economic challenges).
It is indeed a transcontinental
balancing act that begins with
the simple issue of time differences ! And that is just the beginning…
But it is all worth it.

Reviving Jazzland?
By Samira Palmer
Staff Writer
Before
Hurricane
Katrina, there was a theme park
in New Orleans East called
Jazzland. It changed its name in
2002, when it was bought by the
Six Flags national amusement
park chain. The park opened in
2000 and was washed away by
Hurricane Katrina five years later.
There has been a lot of
talk about whether or not the park
will re-open. While there have
been many rumors, there's finally
been progress on the decision.
Two proposals have been on
the table of the New Orleans
Industrial Development Board.
According to nola.com, the two
proposals are from The Paidia
Company and Transformation
Village, LLC.
Eileen, Rebecca, Nikki, Chip,
George, Douglas, Sarah : inner
core of the team without whom I
could not achieve what we have.
The enthusiasm, dedication,
selfless sacrifice has been pivotal. Planning an inaugural show
had some bumps along the way.
I believed in the vital strengths
of each member, and the synergistic effect of the whole.
The Paidia Company is
proposing to resurrect Jazzland
with a $50 million budget and a
$20 million music-themed water
park called "Baritone Beach,"
along with retail outlets in the
future.
Transformation VIllage
proposes a seven-phase plan
that includes building Jazzland
park. Next, a water park called
"Atlantis",
a
dome-shaped
shopping center arranged to
represent global continents , a
450-foot replica of Noah's Ark,
which would contain an orchestra
studio, a movie production lot, a
resort hotel complex, and a facility
for students studying hospitality.
LADY SOPHIA from pg.7
Tara: Having a great team is a
huge part of a successful business, especially in fashion. What
obstacles has your team faced
and overcome in planning the
show? What’s one encouraging
thing you always tell them?
Sophia: Amy, Ashley, Hadley,
I want every member of my team
to always know how important
and talented they are . I hope
that I tell them this enough.
Tara: If you had to pick one
piece from the Spring/Summer
collection what would it be?
Sophia: That is a tough one !!!
I love all the pieces. I have kept
each one for me, so thankfully, I
don’t have to pick ! I only show
pieces that I love, and some that
I only “liked” did not make the
cut.
Don’t pick one..have it all !
Tara: What else can we expect
from LadySophia Nee Collection? I foresee HUGE things
happening!
Sophia: We will have a show in
the fall that will be local. Thereafter, the sky is the limit for us.
We are going global!

Mississippi legislators
passed a controversial religious
freedom bill on April 1, 2014
that could allow state residents
to sue over laws they say place
substantial burden on their
religious practices. The question
that remains is, how would
this affect those in the gay and
lesbian community? The law for
gays and lesbians to be married
is not passed in many states
due to religious factors. They
say that same-sex marriage
is against what the Bible says

and therefore it should not be
granted to anyone. However, this
bill that has passed contradicts
the First Amendment. Congress
shall make no law respecting
an establishment of religion,
or prohibiting the free exercise
thereof; or abridging the freedom
of speech, or of the press; or the
right of the people peaceably to
assemble, and to petition the
Government for a redress of
grievances. (http://constitution.

amendment.html). The questions
are still in the air on how will
this affect the gay community
as well as the First Amendment.
They are also still trying to see if
they can add “In God We Trust,”
into the bill. However, everyone
who is religious does not believe
in God, therefore this bill once
again can conflict with the
freedom of religion. The purpose
of the bill is “the ability to act or
the refusal to act in a manner
that is substantially motivated
by one’s sincerely held religious
belief, whether or not the
exercise is compulsory or central
to a larger system of religious
belief.”

final call on the bill will come
from Governor Phil Bryant, who
everyone is expecting to sign the
bill into law. This bill is not only
in Mississippi, a total of 18 states,
including Louisiana, are looking
forward to passing the bill as
well.

help the needy. However, some
places charge the needy for their
accommodations everyday. If a
homeless person wants to stay
in a shelter they would have to
be on the streets begging for
money and some still have to
find somewhere else to bathe.
How do you give
something when you have
nothing to give? There are not
many places you can go that do
not ask for something in return.
Another key reason to a
lot of homeless people gathering
here is because New Orleans is a
tourist city. There's plenty of ways
to make money giving tourists
some form of entertainment, or
making them feel sympathetic.
The best sales pitch can make
anyone give a donation, and
tourists are running into more
homeless that can make enough
money without going through
the proper channels for permits.
There are so many
different types of homeless
people. Some are hitchhikers and
train jumpers that travel around
America. Some are alcoholics
and drug addicts. Many have
mental issues and most are stuck
in poverty. Also, not all homeless
people want help. They can be
very resistant to leaving the
territory they call home.
Many people are living
in poverty due to the expensive
housing in New Orleans. The
average incomes are barely
enough to afford housing. There's
no avoiding the struggle, that's
why people with good jobs may
still stay at home with parents or
with roommates. Jessica Moore,
New Orleans native, says, "I
became homeless by not having
family members to help me get
up on my feet . I had no choice
but to give up my two daughters
to a more fortunate family."
In order to avoid the
numbers of poverty. The city
would have to change its way
of life from being strictly about
money and tourism. We should
be giving homeless a shoulder
to lean on no matter what race,
culture, or creed.

Dash Rip Rock
By Seth Mattei
Staff Writer
and Jello’s the same way: always
spouting interesting ideas and
funny stuff. As soon as we met, we
connected. He’s a record collector,
and had bought some rare Dash
records, and told me how valuable
they were. We stayed in touch,
and I called him in about 2004to
see if he would be interested in
putting out our records. I was
living in Nashville writing songs
and trying to do country music,
and finally I just said, “F*** it. I’m
going to get on the most punk
label there is. I called Jello, and
he said, “Yeah, I’d love to do some
records with you.”
SM: How many albums has Dash
Rip Rock recorded?
BD: Fifteen. Seventeen, if you
count some bootlegs, but 15
officially.
Formed by singer/guitarist/songwriter Bill Davis in Baton Rouge in 1984, Dash Rip Rock have sustained
large followings locally, nationally and abroad with their unique blend of roots rock, country and punk
rock. They are pioneers of the cowpunk and alt-country genres, and were inducted into the Louisiana
Music Hall of fame in 2012, along with the Neville Brothers. Their latest album, 2013’s “Black Liquor,”
released on Alternative Tentacles Records (run by former Dead Kennedys frontman, Jello Biafra) should
keep fans happy with the rootsy rock they’ve come to expect from Dash Rip Rock, while earning them the
respect of environmentalists with its unflinching critique of Louisiana’s undying dependence on the oil
business (particularly on the title track).
Although they won’t be playing
the Fair Grounds during this
year’s Jazz Fest, Dash Rip Rock
will be playing a night show
during the festival’s second
weekend at Carrollton Station
(located at 8140 Willow St.) with
opening band, the Breton Sound.
The show is on Saturday, May 3 at
10 p.m.
I met up with Dash Rip Rock
founder Bill Davis for an
interview, in which he discussed
the band’s history, influences and
aspirations, as well as his life as a
musician and New Orleans native.
Seth Mattei: Dash Rip Rock have
remained a consistent band, both
live and in the studio, for a long
time. What gives you the energy
to keep going?
Bill Davis: I’ve always felt like
we were filling a hole that no one
else was filling. That gives me
the inspiration to keep going. It’s
so much fun. If we were playing,
say, dark goth stuff, I might not
be that invested in it. But, it’s such
fun music. It’s taking punk rock,
which is exciting, and a blast to
play, and mixing it with country,
which is also a blast, when it’s
played fast. The music makes me
want to keep going.
SM: how did you avoid some of
the trappings that destroyed a lot
of other bands that were popular
in the 1980s and 90s, both
personally and professionally?
BD: I made it a priority to stick
to what I like. Once you’re steered
off of your path by the shiny
objects, you just get miserable
quick. I think playing the music
I love, roots rock and punk rock,
allowed me to feel like I was
always working on something
fresh, that I love. There’s also a lot
of luck involved. The right people
heard us, the right writers wrote
us up, the right DJs played us.
MTV played our videos.
SM: I’ve never thought of Dash
Rip Rock as a political band, but
despite the fun music, your latest
album, “Black Liquor,” has some
intense lyrical moments. How
much of that was a reaction to the
2010 BP oil spill, and how much
was built up from growing up in
Louisiana?
BD: “Black Liquor” is the
culmination of years of just
sucking it up. That’s sort of what
people in Louisiana do. The big
debate now is that oil and gas
provide 70,000 jobs in the state,
and I’m like, “Yeah, but they’re
wiping us out and killing us with
their poison.” It’s the constant
debate about living in Louisiana,
and everyone just sucks it up
because they want to eat their
crawfish and drink their beer. I
started working with Jello Biafra
and co-writing songs with my
wife, Cheryl Wagner, and we’ve
had enough! Even though dash
grew a reputation for being a
party band, I think we’ve always
maintained a Southern identity,
and I thought it’d be interesting to
use some of that identity on “Black
Liquor” to get a little political. And
it’s not so much political as it is
environmental. I think politicians
are toothless and can’t do much
of anything but environmentally,
it’s up to everyone to stop all
of the horrible things going on
down here. I’m pleased that
people seem to be taking our
message seriously. Also, being on
a politically outspoken label leant
weight to what we were trying to
say on “Black Liquor.”
SM: your guitar style is all over
the map. Who are some of your
influences?
BD: A bunch of really strange
guitar players I met in the 80s really
influenced me. Danny Gatton,
who committed suicide, was one
of the most monstrous Telecaster
players to ever walk the planet.
Gatton worked with another guy
I met named Evan Johns. They
were both from Washington, D.C.
and played in rockabilly bands,
but the rockabilly kind of turned
punk. Evan introduced me to
Danny Gatton’s style, and that
formulated a lot of what I do on
guitar. Going way back, I loved
Ace Frehley from Kiss. It was
really simple. I like guitar that has
a country flavor. Pete Townshend
is another one, and Bily Zoom
from the band X really inspired
the punk rock side of my style.
SM: How long have you known
Jello Biafra, and how did the deal
with Alternative Tentacles come
about?
BD: I met Jello 20 years ago at
South by Southwest, and we had a
mutual friend in Mojo Nixon. I go
way back with Mojo. He and I are
kindred spirits. We’re drinking
buddies and running partners.
We’ve toured Europe together a
couple times. I think he’s a genius,
a mountain of psycho-babble.
I love what comes out of his
mind. He introduced me to Jello,
SM: How do you maintain the
balance between being a band that
doesn’t take itself too seriously, yet
being confident, adept performers
and serious songwriters?
BD: It’s a delicate balance. I’ve seen
other bands not take themselves
too seriously, but come off as
super-serious. Foo Fighters are
a really good example. When
you see bands like that, who are
making it, you can model yourself
on what they’re getting away with.
Usually, when you’re in a rock
band, you want to be funny all
the time. Things in music are so
happy and fun, especially the style
we play. A lot of our humor comes
out in the music and lyrics. A lot
of ideas in our songs are hilarious
and whimsical.
SM: Are you still able to make a
living playing music?
BD: Yeah, we are. It’s amazing
that it’s been my career, and I can
write “musician” on my tax return
every year. It’s awesome!
SM: Where did you grow up?
BD: I was born in New Orleans,
and spent my early childhood in
Slidell. That’s where I learned how
to ride a bike. Then, we moved to
Baton Rouge, then Lake Charles,
where I went to high school. I
went to college at LSU, and as
soon as I graduated, I came back
here and the band took off. I’ve
spent most of my life living here
in the city.
SM: What made you want to play
music?
BD: The early stages of MTV
happened when I was a kid, and
I’d go see Led Zeppelin movies in
the theater. Also, watching bands,
going to concerts. The minute
you see someone up there killing
it like that, you’re drawn to it.
Listening to the radio as a kid, I
would get my dad to crank the
rock’n’roll songs and turn down
the cheese. I just fell in love with
rock’n’roll. To this day, I love loud,
fast rock’n’roll.
SM: Who taught you how to play?
BD: I never took lessons. My
sister had a guitar in her closet,
and I snuck it out. She never
noticed. I kept it in my room
and started pounding away on
it. I had a Creedence Clearwater
Revival music book. From there,
it was purely watching guitar
players. I’ve been lucky to be
able to watch players’ hands and
sort of steal what they’re doing
from a distance. I’d go watch Lake
Charles bands play high school
dances, and while everyone else
was dancing,I was standing in
front of the stage watching the
guitar player. I’ve continued my
education. I lived in Nashville,
and some of the country players
just blow your mind. YouTube
videos were a revelation for me,
so lately, my guitar playing has
improved because of YouTube.
SM: What format do you listen to
music on nowadays?
BD: I hate to say it, but I listen
to Spotify all the time, and the
checks I get from them are a joke.
I think $10 a month streaming
services are the future, most
people are going to sign up. I’ve
been reading a lot about it, and
Jello’s on top of it as well.
SM: Tell me about the Jazz Fest
night show.
BD: We’re playing Carrollton
Station on May 3rd. we always
do a Jazz Fest show at that club.
It’s been our home base in New
Orleans ever since we started.
Even when we lived in Baton
Rouge, some of our first shows
were there, and at Jimmy’s across
the street. That block is a good
Ground Zero for Dash Rip Rock.
And we have Breton sound
opening up for us.
SM: How does it feel to be a
member of the Louisiana Music
Hall of Fame?
BD: It’s great. I’ve felt, as we’ve
progressed through our career,
that we might be respectable
enough to get into the Hall of
Fame and claim our spot, and
when it happened, I was super
excited. The Neville Brothers
were inducted the same night as
us, and it was great going in with
them. I mean, they toured with
the Rolling Stones. Being in that
kind of company spoke volumes.
It was very respectable. Louisiana
is such a fertile musical breeding
ground. There have been so many
great rock bands. Even from the
beginning, people like Lead Belly
from North Louisiana. Then,
you’ve got people like Jerry Lee
Lewis, Dr. John and Fats Domino.
It’s a great club to be a member
of. I think being a member of the
Hall of Fame will prove to be one
of the highlights of my career, and
my life.

Captain America: The
Winter Soldier review
No longer the joke of the Avengers
By Kamel Benyahia
Staff Writer
This movie did what the
first movie failed to do; establish
Captain America (Chris Evans) as
a tactical genius with impeccable
fighting skills. The tone of this
film is more serious than the
other Marvel films and feels like
a genuine spy-thriller at times.
This plays to Captain America's
strengths as an intelligent soldier
who can hold his own with any
villain or comrade.
Captain
America's
strengths are shown off early in
the movie when he and Black
Widow (Scarlett Johansson) are
tasked with leading a tactical
team on a night-time naval ship
raid. Captain America breaks
down the entire team's roles and
then proceeds to neutralize every
threat on the deck of the ship with
ease. The scenes where Captain
America is unleashing his full
arsenal of attacks stand out
because of the visceral and brutal
nature of hand to hand combat.
There is plenty of action in this
movie, and it does a good job
of showcasing the Cap's combat
skills.
Black Widow is a great
character to pair up with Captain
America considering her shady
background. She is just as smart
as Captain America, but doesn't
share the same super-human
abilities. It doesn't matter though,
Black Widow can hold her own
against the strongest villains by
using her tactical prowess and hitand-run attack style. Considering
this movie straddles the spythriller genre, it was a good idea
bringing Black Widow into the
fold. She primarily operates in
the shadows and knows how to
survive without the support of a
team. Her anti-hero tendencies
clash with Captain America's
all-American style making for
interesting banter between the
two.
Anthony Mackie plays
Cap's modern-day sidekick, Sam
Wilson, who dons a wing-suit
and provides air-support for
Captain America. His character
was a bit flat, and I felt like he
could have been utilized better.
There were moments that my
suspension of disbelief was tested
as Mackie's character was flying
around. I wish the wing-suit had
a little more explanation behind
it because it didn't impress me
like Iron Man's suit of armor.
Mackie was serviceable as the
Cap's sidekick, but I don't see him
getting his own spinoff any time
soon.
Samuel L. Jackson
reprises his role as Nick Fury
and goes toe to toe with screenlegend Robert Redford who
plays Alexander Pierce. These
two screen-legends bring a lot of
gravitas to the Marvel film much
like Tommy Lee Jones did for the
first Captain America. It's hard
to talk about this movie without
giving away serious plot details
considering it plays out like a spythriller. This movie has Captain
America going rogue against
an organization designed to
protect people around the world.
Captain America's rogue status
is the reason why Black Widow
was a good match-up for the film.
With Black Widow's skill-set and
Captain's abilities they are able to
accomplish quite a bit.
The Winter Soldier
was a great villain to pit against
Captain America considering
his history and skillset. He balances well
with Captain America
by pitting super-solider
versus
super-soldier.
He is Russia's copy
of Captain America
with the exception
of a robotic arm. I
never read the Captain
America comic books,
but I would imagine
the Winter Soldier
series were some of
the best if this movie
is any indication. It
seems to work better
with audiences when
they see a villain on
equal ground or more
powerful than the hero
because we like rooting
for the underdog, usually.
This has been one of the
more enjoyable Marvel movies I
have seen. It was more grounded
and yet still had major impacts
on the Marvel universe. I have to
admit I am a bit indifferent about
Captain America, but this film has
piqued my interest. I appreciated
this film more than any of the
Iron Man and Thor films to date.
I would recommend seeing this
movie, but not in 3D. I felt like
the 3D distracted from the film
too much.

Summer Movies to Watch
Summer is approaching, and that means new summer blockbuster movies to watch. Many of today’s popular movies comes from summer premieres. From college theme movies, to
romantic comedies, to an adaptation of a classic novel, here are five movies to look out for.
Neighbors
May 9
It’s family versus frat in this raunchy comedy. Seth Rogan and Rose
Byrne play new parents, who are
surprised by some wild neighbors:
a fraternity. Rogan and Byrne’s
characters are disturbed and look
to find peace with their rowdy
neighbors. When the fraternity’s
president, played by Zac Efron,
pumps up the volume, the battle
begins. The movie premiered at
Austin’s South by Southwest festival, where it garnered rave reviews from critics. Other stars include
Dave Franco, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Lisa Kudrow.
Maleficent
May 30
The story of Sleeping Beauty is
told from the perspective of the
villainess side. Angelina Jolie portrays the witch, and we see her side
of the story, and what drove her to
curse baby Aurora, played by Elle
Fanning.
22 Jump Street
Think Like A Man
Too
June 13
June 20
This is the first sequel of the summer, and it looks like another boxoffice success. The characters of
Channing Tatum (White House
Down) and Jonah Hill (The Wolf
of Wall Street) go undercover in
college, but that doesn’t mean they
are any smarter than they were in
high school. Ice Cube, Dave Franco, and Rob Riggle reprise their
roles from the first installment.
Steve Harvey’s relationship advice novel
is turned into a hit
comedy, and is ready
for a sequel. The gang
is back (including
Kevin Hart, Michael
Ealy, Meagan Good,
Jerry Ferrara, Taraji P.
Henson and Gabrielle
Union), and they’re
going to Vegas for a
wedding. The movie, like its predecessor, looks like it will have good
standings in the box office.
The Giver
Aug. 15
A classic novel is heading to the
big screen. Lois Lowry’s The
Giver is about a boy (Brenton
Thwaites) who must learn all of
history’s secrets from an elderly
man (Jeff Bridges) with the memory of mankind. The movie also
stars Meryl Streep, Katie Holmes,
and country singer Taylor Swift.
This is Swift’s third movie ( after
Valentine’s Day and The Lorax).

Summer Game Guide

Mario Kart 8: (Wii U)
The kart racer that started it all is
back with its eighth entry and first
on the Wii U. For those of you
who have a Wii U, this is a must
buy. A lot of the classic themes
that made previous Mario Karts a
success are returning along with a
few new features. There will be new levels mixed in with old classics
stretching all the way back to the Nintendo 64 version that started it
all. Players will be able to play multiplayer locally or online with up
to 12-racers on the track.

Diablo III Ultimate
Evil Edition: (PS4)
Diablo III has been
out for awhile now,
but it is finally going to reach the
PS4 this summer.
The Diablo games
have always had
a button mashing
feel to me, but for
some people the hunt for loot is what drives them. This game takes
place in a fantasy world and allows you to pick different classes that
cater to your play style. "Diablo III" features increasing difficulties
and MMO-style questing that has the player grinding through dungeons in search for better loot. I have never been a Diablo enthusiast,
but I do have friends who swear by this game and have beaten it on
higher difficulties. I also can't deny the critical success of the series,
and I have to acknowledge Blizzard for making good quality game that
cater to their audience.
Dying Light: (PS4, PC)
This horror title has a lot of mystery surrounding it. It seems to
resemble a title that came out earlier on the PS4, Outlast. You are
tasked with survival in an area
surrounded by infected. Daylight
uses its day and night lighting to
establish the mood in the game. It
also affects the gamer's decision
making since it's much more dangerous to do things at night. This
game is based on suspense and
making the player question their
every move. It seems to borrow
the camera and lighting aspect
from Outlast as well. This should
be an interesting title for those interested in the horror game genre.
Watch Dogs: (PC, PS4, PS3, Xbox
One, 360)
This is one game I am really looking forward to. After being delayed by Ubisoft the title is finally
hitting the shelves May 27. Watch
Dogs features a near-future Chicago that has been converted into
a city that the NSA dreams about.
There are camera's everywhere
and the whole city is digitally
connected for security purposes.
What happens when one man gets control over the city? The story of
Watch Dogs is still a bit unclear, but with Ubisoft's track record lately,
it is safe to invest in anything they have coming out. Watch Dogs will
be an open world game that allows you to hack into any device or city
grid in the game to accomplish your goals. This should be an interesting game mechanic that could create some truly unique experiences
in different gamer's hands.
The Last of Us: Remastered (PS4)
MLB 14: The Show (PS3, PS4)
This game is going to be a visual experience on par with actually walking into legendary ballparks like Wrigley Field. Everything from the
fans to the individual blades of grass have been meticulously detailed.
For you baseball fans this is your best and only choice on the PS4 as of
right now. Even the fabric on the uniforms can be distinguished from
the screenshots letting us know they did not miss many details. The
EA sports games on the PS4 leave a bit to be desired in the graphics
department, but NBA 2K14 and now MLB 14: The Show look to show
how sports games should look in today's gaming.
Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn (PS4, PS3, PC)
Final Fantasy XIV has been rebuilt from the ground up and relaunched as a new game despite
sharing the same name as its predecessor. The game was not a success with critics and Square Enix
stepped in and revived the MMO
instead of scrapping it and starting with a new project. This risky
move has paid off and now Final
Fantasy's MMO finally lives up to it's namesake. The new game has
been out on PC and PS3 already, but now PS4 players can join in.
The game is unique in that it shares servers between each Platform.
One player on PC can play with a buddy on PS4 on the same servers.
This is a great game to lose yourself in over the summer considering
it features the time-consuming grind to level your character that is de
rigueur in MMOs. I would strongly recommend this game for lovers
of Final Fantasy and MMOs.
Sniper Elite 3: (PS3, PS4, PC)
The Sniper Elite series has always taking sniping to the next level. Call
of Duty and Battlefield both have their own versions of sniping, but
feature different facets of war beyond sniping. Sniper Elite really focuses on the sniping mechanics by bringing different environmental
factors into your aiming. Artificial intelligence has been beefed up
from the second game. This is good since both of the older games
had some enemies that either knew too much or too little. This title
boasts bigger maps that give the players more options when completing a level. The X-ray shots return allowing you to get an up close look
at the destruction you just unleashed on some poor Nazi's noggin.
Dark Souls II:
(PS3, 360, PC)
Do you feel like
dying a lot, mercilessly, with no
idea what just
wiped you out?
Then you might
like Dark Souls II.
The Dark Souls
series
revolves
around punishing
the player over and over until the player learns how to overcome the
obstacle. Dark Souls is a game that takes place in a fantasy world
with knights, dragons, and several other things that are out to kill you.
Dark Souls rewards the players who push themselves through countless punishing deaths until they are victorious. I have never dedicated
myself to any of the Souls games, but I have played a bit of them and
they are quite challenging. If a challenge is what you're looking for
this summer then look no further the Dark Souls II.
Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark (PS4, PS3, Xbox One, 360, PC)
The previous Transformer games not attached to the Transformer
movies have been surprisingly fun and fresh. The multiplayer matches
were a lot of fun featuring common shooter game modes like team
death match and domination style matches. The stories were always
original and more interesting than the movie-tie-in games. This new
title seems to carry the tradition with original Transformers stories and
solid gameplay mechanics. Right now the only multiplayer that has
been announced is a four-player co-op mode similar to "Mass Effect 3"
and "Warframe" multiplayer. If you're a fan of the Transformers then
look for this title to come out later this year.
The last of us was one of the best
games overall last year. It offered
a fresh take on the zombie genre
that has been overplayed in recent
entertainment titles. The game was
truly a masterpiece that featured a
great story and excellent mechanics.
Now the game is going to be remastered and upscaled to 1080p. The
Last of Us was already one of the
best looking games of the year, and
with the PS4's capabilities this game
should be a standout. If you played
last year's version already you won't
be getting anything knew except the
upscaled graphics. The PS4 version
will have all the added DLC already
added for those of you who missed
out on the extra storyline. If you
have a PS4 and missed out on this
title last year then buy this game
and you will not be disappointed.
Trials Fusion (Xbox One, 360, PS4,
PS3, PC)
The Trials games have been a personal favorite of mine recently, and
now they have made the jump to
Playstation. Trials Fusion is a 2D
side-scrolling motorcycle game
similar to the legendary "Excite
Bike" game on the original Nintendo. This version features a slightly
futuristic theme with the gnarly
levels we've come to expect from
the Trials games. It's all about balance and throttle as you attempt to
navigate an evolving course that
is falling apart around you. The
new courses bring new challenges
designed to stop the most skilled
Trial's riders. This is a fun game to
play in between long game sessions,
or as a quick pick-up game between
classes.

Talking to Tara & Trell
Advice Column
Dear Tara and Trell,
I I have a crush on my sister's best
friend who is 3 years older than
me. I would love to ask her out
but I'm afraid of what she'll say
because I'm younger than her.
Should I ask my sister to talk to her
or ask her out myself?
Signed,
Young but Ready!
You may be young but you're ready! (cues beyond' song) Seriously, I
definitely think you should go for it! I mean chicks dig younger guys these
days especially if he has his head on his shoulders. Being a cougar is the
new thing. I don't think you should ask your sister to hook you up, because
that shows you're not confident and we don't want that! Hopefully she'll
give you a chance! Thanks for the question!

August Alsina Album Review
By Vantrell Leslie
Staff Writer
Hometown star, August
Alsina, returns home to celebrate
album release. August was born
in New Orleans, Louisiana and
even though no one in his family
was musically inclined, August
had a passion for singing.
August 31, 2010, he became
more committed to his music,
and relocated to Atlanta in 2011.
After relocating, August released
his first mix-tape entitled “The
Product,” which was released in
April 2012.
August first uploaded
videos to YouTube in 2007 at
age 14, starting with a cover of
"Hypothetically" by Lyfe Jennings.
With both his father and
stepfather battling crack-cocaine
addiction,
August’s
mother
moved him to Houston, Texas
in search of a fresh start after
Hurricane Katrina. August had
disagreements with his mother
and was eventually kicked out.
Alsina’s first hit single
titled “I love it,” featuring Trinidad
James, was released in Jan. 2013,
which lead to Alsina’s career
taking off. August released a full
debut album titled “Testimony”
which included a track list of 17
songs. To celebrate the release of
his new album alsina decided to
celebrate in his hometown, New
Orleans, by having an album
signing at best buy. August gave
out autographed booklets and
took photos with fans. Following
the album signing, there was
After his older brother,
Melvin, was shot and killed on
an album release party at the
Howling Wolf located in the
Warehouse district. He performed
songs from his highly-anticipated
album.
The new Orleans native
got really personal with the crowd
by doing a walk through and
even taking “selfies” with a few
fans. August expressed his true
love and appreciation for all of
his fellow natives for coming out
to support him. He assured the
crowd that he would represent the
city to the best of his ability and
pave the way for many other local
aspiring artist on the rise. August

murdered
on
August 31, 2010.
Dear Tara and Trell,
I've been dating this guy for a month and I want to cook for him..should I or
is it too soon to start showing my domestic side?
Thanks,
Ready to be a wife
Well, thanks for the question however we feel as though it's never too soon
to show a man that you can cook! Just don't make a habit out of it too soon
because you still want those date nights! Being able to cook is a great
trait the opposite sex looks for in a companion! Good luck with everything!
Share some of those recipes!

Dear Tara and Trell
My girlfriend has a lock code on her phone and she won't tell me why.
She won't leave her phone alone with me, not even when she goes to the
restroom. Should I be worried?
-concerned and confused
I feel as though your girlfriend has a right to have privacy, so I don't think
you should pressure her to give up the code. Trust is the biggest factor in
a relationship, so if you feel as though she's being sneaky then maybe you
two shouldn't be in a relationship. Although, her taking her phone with her
to the restroom could be a red flag! Have a sit down with her and figure it
out. Best Wishes!
August Alsin’a mom decided to
surprise him at his album release
party.

August album relase party. The signer performed at the Howlin’ Wolf.
Dear Tara and Trell,
I feel like I should lose 50 lbs before the summer. Any workout suggestions?
-Summertime fine
Hey summertime fine! I definitely feel you on that! However, 50 lbs is a tremendous amount of weight to lose in such a short time! As long as you're
doing it to make yourself happy then plan something out with a trainer. I
don't have any workout tips, but I can point you in the direction of someone
who does! Felecia Flake is a great trainer and she'll consult with you! her
instagram is Fabulosity30. Have a great summer and good luck with your
journey!
August Alsina takes the stage at
Howln’ Woof for his album release
party.
