No Time to Wait
The saying goes, “March comes in like a lion and out like a
lamb.” For Omega Jones, a Fayetteville radio personality and
the voice of Cape Fear Valley Health’s Take Charge Of Your
Health program, March 2010 let loose a vicious roar when
she was diagnosed with breast cancer at the beginning of the
month.
One in eight women in America have breast cancer, making
it the second most common cancer in women today. Studies
show that, while African American women like Omega
Jones may be less likely to get the disease, they seem to be
twice as likely to die from it.
It’s unclear why African American women have a higher
mortality rate for breast cancer. One theory is they are less
likely to have regular mammograms, a key in early detection
and thus survival of breast cancer.
Jones herself was hesitant to have a mammogram. She did
not feel her symptoms were typical breast cancer symptoms:
a lump in the breast or underarm, irritation or dimpling of
breast skin, redness or flaky skin in the nipple area, pain in
any area of the breast or nipple discharge other than breast
milk.
“I felt no lumps,” she said. “I had no pain. I just had a funny
feeling, an engorged breast like there was a rush of milk. So I
made an appointment with my doctor.”
Jones’s family physician warned her that this could be the
early stages of breast cancer and ordered a mammogram.
Omega scheduled an appointment at Cape Fear Valley’s
Breast Care Center. There she had a digital mammogram so
advanced it could find tumors the size of a ballpoint
pen tip.
“I was amazed at the technology,” she said. “They found
cancer cells so small they’d never have shown up on a
regular mammogram.”
Due to the cancer’s early detection, Jones found herself with
options many don’t have.
“Because it was found early, I didn’t have to have chemo.
And I was able to wait before I started radiation therapy,”
she says. “It gave me time to prepare myself, to get used to
the idea before I started treatment.”

importance of early detection.

“Your body tells you when it doesn’t feel well,” says Jones. “If
I’d waited for a lump, the prognosis would’ve been different.
I listened to my body and got a mammogram.”
Every woman should take an active part in breast cancer
detection by conducting monthly breast self-exams. Check
for changes in size or shape of the breast, as well as any
changes to your armpit area each month. You know your
body better than anyone else; if you notice a change, make
an appointment with your physician for an exam.
If you are age 40 or older, have a screening mammogram
conducted every one to two years. Having regular
mammograms can greatly lower your chance of dying from
breast cancer, as they catch abnormalities earlier than self
exam or clinical breast exams may.

Vote or Starve
Our failure to vote means we do not get to dine at the dinner table where American democracy is
served. Kitchen help and servers to others who get to feast to their satisfaction is all we risk being. Barely
a crumb will we take of the good life where equality, justice and fairness are concerned. Doesn’t and
shouldn’t the sweet aroma of unalienable rights and the pursuit of happiness entice us even a wee bit, to
want badly enough to sip and sop at the trough that is the American democratic ideal? If we are the cooks,
doesn’t our culinary input entitle and entice us to want to taste the final product, such as it is? Surely, we
must know how much blood, sweat and tears we have stirred in the pot of progress to make the grand
experiment edible to an evolved citizenry.
We can ill-afford to have such reticence regarding the comprised parts and players within the American political framework (i.e., politicians and the offices they seek or hold), where such apathy produces, as
it were, a static, non-participatory democracy which renders us uninvolved, un-included, and un-elevated?
The all-important right to vote is the big umbrella under which our adequate participation and inclusion in every other part of American life is made possible. Our failure to vote for the office of the United
States President on down to the lowest governmental office can have significant, adverse consequences
for the quality of our living, on so many levels.
Consider, for example, the important roles of some of our elected officials and query whether we have
the luxury of not having a say in who gets to occupy those positions:
United States President – The President is responsible to the American people to the extent that he
must fulfill a number of key roles. As Chief of State, he must inspire the American people. He is a living
symbol of the nation. As Chief Executive, he decides how the laws of the United States are to be enforced
and chooses officials, such as cabinet members and the heads of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA),
Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to help run the Executive Branch. As Chief Diplomat, the president decides
what American diplomats and ambassadors shall say to foreign governments. He makes the foreign policy
of the United States. As Commander-In-Chief, the president is in charge of the U.S. armed forces, and
decides where troops shall be stationed, where ships shall be sent, and how weapons shall be used. As
Chief Legislator, the Constitution gives the president power to influence Congress in its lawmaking. As
Chief of Party, the president helps members of his political party get elected or appointed to office. The
president campaigns for those members who have supported his policies. And as Chief Guardian of the
Economy, the president must attend to such things as unemployment, high prices, taxes, business profits,
and the general prosperity of the country. While not in control of the economy, he is expected to help it run
smoothly.
U.S. Legislative Branch — Congress is the primary lawmaking body of the U.S. Government. Members of Congress introduce legislative proposals called bills or resolutions. Members vote on the proposals, which are then sent to the Executive branch to be approved. Members of Congress also review the
work of executive agencies to determine if they are following Government policy. Our Congress is a bicameral legislature — a lawmaking body with two houses — consisting of the House of Representatives and
the Senate to ensure everyone has equal representation. The Senate has 100 members, while the House of
Representatives has 435 voting Members and five Delegates, each serving a two year term, and one
Resident Commissioner who serves for four years. The Senate and the House each has powers not granted
to the other (i.e., for the Senate, giving approval to appointments of Cabinet secretaries and federal judges;
and for the House of Representatives, the ability to elect the President if the Electoral College is tied).
NC Governor – The governor heads the Council of State. He is responsible for preparing and presenting the state budget to the General Assembly. Additionally, he has extensive powers of appointment of
executive branch officials, some judges, and members of boards and commissions. The governor serves as
Commander in Chief of the state military forces except when they are called into the service of the United
States.
School Board –The local school board is a critical public link to public schools. School board members serve the community in several important ways. First and foremost school boards must look out for
students. Quality education should be the only concern on the school board’s agenda. When making
decisions about school programs, school boards should incorporate their community’s view of what students should know and be able to do. School boards should be accessible to the public and accountable
for the performance of their schools. School boards are the education watchdog for their communities,
ensuring that students get the best education for the tax dollars spent. The school superintendent provides a vision for the district, while also
preparing budgets for the school board’s approval, overseeing school-wide initiatives and regulations and maintaining district standards.
City Council — The City Council is an elected body representing the citizens of Fayetteville. The
city council consists of nine council members and a mayor. All nine council members are elected from
individual districts, and only citizens within the city limits can vote for those seats on the council. Citizens
only vote for a candidate running in their respective districts. Cumberland County falls under the requirements of the Federal Voting Rights Act. In accordance with that act, four of the nine districts are drawn so
that minorities are assured a voting majority within that district. That creates the opportunity for minority
representation on the council roughly equal to minority representation within the city’s population. The
mayor is elected at-large. The mayor acts as the official head of city government and presides at city
council meetings. The mayor is a voting member of the council. The mayor also appoints council members
to city council committees and liaison positions.
Local trial Judges — Unlike with our city council, no federal law exists to assure that any of Cumberland
County’s ten (10) district court judges, or its four superior court judges be roughly equal to minority
representation within the city or county’s population. A judge makes important and often life-defining
decisions regarding persons or property. Accordingly, it is important that a judge has broad experience,
demonstrates good judicial temperament, and is fair, just and impartial in all decision-making, Anything
less undermines the confidence the public has a right to enjoy in our justice system.
Thus, when we add up all of the various offices and scope of the responsibilities of our elected
officials, we realize how significantly they daily impact our economic, political, educational and social-well
being, as well as our liberty and pursuit of happiness. When we fail to vote, we forfeit the right and
opportunity to chose who we would want to entrust with our precious democratic resources, and thereby
risk relegating ourselves to permanent second-class citizenship in the world’s richest and most powerful
country. In such a precarious state, we lack the wherewithal to survive and to thrive. We essentially
“starve” to death because we lack adequate access to the political and economic nourishment required for
full citizenship.
Therefore, during this election cycle, starting with early voting, October 23rd thru November 1st, and
on Election Day, November 4, 2014, we must fully participate in the democratic process by voting in the
greatest possible numbers, so that we may fairly choose those who will serve we the people. Let us be
active, committed, and determined to achieve our democracy, to take our full and rightful place within it,
and to be truly and unequivocally, American.

Yes, there are other places where Black men have been killed by the
police. Ferguson, however, has become the flashpoint, the symbolic representation of police brutality and indifference for the lives of Black people. It
has become what Birmingham became to the civil rights movement after the
bombing of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church and murder of four Black girls
in that church. Ferguson has become a rallying cry for the pent up anger, hurt
and resentment of decades of police violence against Black people.
This President cannot on one hand launch an initiative tagged “My
Brother’s Keeper” and then sit in the White House as his brothers cry out for
help. It is not enough to express empathy; not enough to send the Attorney
General. America needs to see its President on the streets of Ferguson. They
need to hear their President speak unapologetically about the history of
racism in America and why Ferguson is not an anomaly but the latest chapter
in the American saga. The world needs to see the first African-American
President, the leader of the “free world” standing behind the presidential seal
and affirming the human rights of Black men. Our detractors around the world
need to see our President, our Black President speak forcefully on the constitutional rights of African-Americans. Black people in America need to see the
full weight of the federal government take on this menace of police violence
and be assured that ‘state’s right’ to kill is unacceptable.
When Lyndon Johnson determined that poverty was a plague on
America, he referenced Appalachia and traveled to communities of poor whites.
Johnson understood the power of his office and cared less whether the
symbolic representation of his policy was white and southern. LBJ, a Dixiecrat,
also declared boldly before Congress that “we shall overcome” knowing full
well the political penalty he would pay. He understood that his moral duty as
President compelled him to ignore political considerations and history was
calling upon him to do the right thing. George W. Bush traveled to Africa and
acknowledged the continued legacy in the United States of the enslavement
of Africans during a trip to Goree Island, Senegal. Yes, Johnson and Bush are
white but LBJ, W and Barack are all Presidents. Those same forces of history,
of legacy, that moved Johnson and Bush are now weighing upon this historic
presidency.
By not traveling to Ferguson this President is playing into the hands of
those who have worked to diminish his presidency. He cannot equivocate
and he cannot worry about the mid-term election. The America that exists
today will continue to exist after November albeit with a different countenance if this President rises to the occasion. President Obama has little effective time left in office. It would be a tragic miscalculation to be a spectator
when his community, his nation needs to see him and hear him speak decisively on why America cannot afford Fergusons if we are to be the Republic
we claim.

2. Pray for the doctor. Realize that God uses trained human instrumentality to aid His healing
powers. As one doctor has put it,
“We treat the patent and God heals
him.” Pray therefore that the doctor may be an open channel of
God’s healing grace.
3. Whatever you do, do not
become panicky or filled with fear,
for if you do, you will send out negative and therefore destructive
thoughts in the direction of your
loved one when he requires positive and healing thoughts to assist
them.
4. Remember that God does
nothing except by law. Also remember that our little materialistic laws
are only fragmentary revelations of
the great power flowing through
the universe. Spiritual law also gov-
erns sickness. God has arranged two
remedies for all sickness. One is healing through natural laws applicable
by science, and the other brings healing by spiritual law applicable
through faith.
5. Completely surrender your
loved one into the hands of God. By
your faith, you can place him in the
flow of Divine power. There is healing there, but in order for it to be effective, the patient must be completely released to the operation of
God’s will. This is difficult to understand and equally difficult to perform,
but it is a fact that if the great desire
for the loved one to live is matched
with an equally great willingness to
relinquish him to God, healing powers are amazingly set in motion.
6. It is also important that harmony prevail in the family, that is, a
spiritual harmony. Remember the
emphasis in the scripture, St. Matthew 18:19, “if two of you shall
AGREE on earth as touching anything that they shall ask, it shall be
done for them of my Father which is
in heaven.” Apparently, disharmony
and disease are akin.
7. Form a picture in your mind
of the loved one as being well. Visualize him in perfect health. Picture
him as radiant with the love and
goodness of God. The conscious
mind may suggest sickness, even
death, but nine-tenths of your mind
is in the subconscious. Let the picture of health sink into the subconscious, and this powerful part of your
mind will send forth radiant health
energy. What we believe in the subconscious, we usually get. Unless
your faith controls the subconscious,
you will never get any good thing,
for the subconscious gives back
only what your real thought is. If
the real thought is negative, the results will also be negative. If the real
thought is positive, you will get positive and healing results.
