FAR EAST FILM FESTIVAL:
UNDER THE SIGN OF THE TIGER!
Opening with the South Korean blockbuster The Tiger on Friday the 22nd of April and closing with the
Hong Kong thriller The Bodyguard on Saturday the 30th with the presence of the legendary Sammo
Hung.
72 films in the official selection (5 world premieres) and over 100 events organized around the city. With
an unmissable retrospective of Japanese science fiction and the restored 4K versions of four Bruce
Lee masterpieces.
Two exceptional artists come together for the Festival trailer: director Johnnie To and composer Lim
Giong.
Press release of the 13th of April, 2016
For immediate release
UDINE - For some it's a symbol of strength. For others, a symbol of freedom. Yet for many more
(especially those who have read Emilio Salgari's swashbuckling novels) it's a symbol of resistance
and rebellion. And for the Far East Film Festival it is above all a symbol of energy: the energy needed
to realise a cultural initiative and the energy – along with the ability not to take yourself too
seriously – to announce the fact. In any case, it's certainly no coincidence that the eighteenth
edition will be held under the sign of the tiger. Or, to be precise, under the sign of The Tiger, Park
Hoon-jung's moving blockbuster which will roar its way to its international premiere on Friday the
22nd of April!
That alone would make for a memorable Opening Night, but Park's fierce South Korean tiger, thirsty
for blood and justice, won't be roaring alone: one of the FEFF's oldest and dearest friends will be
returning to the spotlights of the Teatro Nuovo. Who? A genius called Johnnie To, that's who! And
the unforgettable winner of the very first Audience Award for A Hero Never Dies will have two tasks:
as producer, to present to the public the gangster movie Trivisa, a sumptuous compendium of
Milkyway's style (and happy twentieth anniversary guys, by the way!), and as director, to officially
cut the ribbon with the festival trailer that bears his signature!
Yes - the FEFF is coming of age, and to celebrate the event in style it's decided to give itself and its
audience something truly priceless: 30 seconds of pure auteur beauty. 30 seconds where Johnnie
makes his 'debut' in animated film (which, it goes without saying, is already a gift inside the gift) and
where his vision meets the music of an extraordinary composer: Lim Giong (a gift inside the gift
2
inside the gift!), Cannes award winner for the soundtrack of The Assassin! What more could you
want from opening night?
Perhaps, for symmetry's sake, we ought to expect an equally memorable closing night too, so here's
the closing night of the 30th of April for you: a date to put in your diary in fluorescent marker,
because it's the night when Sammo Hung - the actor, director and action choreographer who over
the decades has indelibly revolutionized cinema martial arts - will be taking the stage at the Far East
Film Festival! After Joe Hisaishi and Jackie Chan, the two superstars who appeared in 2015, another
legend will be collecting his Golden Mulberry Award for Lifetime Achievement. Considered an icon at
home and adored around the world, Sammo will be accompanying his film The Bodyguard
(International Festival Premiere) to Udine, delighting fans and consolidating the international
reputation of the FEFF, which grows with each passing year.
But let's - briefly – allow the figures of this 18th edition speak for themselves: 72 films in the official
selection, of which 50 in competition, from 10 geographic regions of Asia (5 world premieres, 10
international premieres, 8 Festival Premieres and 37 Italian premieres, of which 18 European
premieres), over 100 events scattered throughout the centre of Udine (among which the inevitable
Far East Cosplay Contest on the 24th of April) and more than 150 volunteers ready to roll up their
sleeve and help out the staff of the Festival from the 22nd to the 30th of April.
A full, diverse programme which also contains the FEFF Campus, the school of journalism for young
European and Asian talent, and the international Ties That Bind workshop, which for years has been
putting Western and Eastern producers in touch. And let's not forget about the pre-opening event:
an extraordinary 21st of April with Constanza Macras's show The Ghosts (the umpteenth triumph of
the Teatro Stabile di Innovazione del Friuli Venezia Giulia)!
New for 2016 is Focus Asia, the business event which will be held at Udine's Cinema Visionario on
the 27th, 28th and 29th of April and will see FEFF working together with MIA – the International
Audiovisual Market of Rome (together with the Fondo Audiovisivo del Friuli Venezia Giulia and DG
Cinema - MIBACT). A first step towards reinforcing relations between Europe and Asia to offer buyers
an overview of the most recent genre productions.
Alongside a packed competition section, which will see the best Pan-Asian titles of the last season
competing for the 2016 Audience Award (blockbusters, cult movies, outsider titles and auteur films,
like the highly anticipated Three Stories of Love by Ryosuke Hashiguchi), there will be an infoscreening of the anthology film Ten Years, as well as once again parallel sections devoted to
documentaries (don't miss The Lovers and the Despot, preview of Biografilm Festival), one dedicated
to the Fresh Wave Festival (the young voices of Hong Kong), one dedicated to fear (a big comeback
for Horror Day and the very first appearance on the Udine screen of the great Kurosawa Kiyoshi: a
cruel journey into the darkness and the psyche titled Creepy!), and another dedicated to exhibitions
(from the contemporary Japanese art of Paradoxa to the world of comics with Vincenzo Filosa's
Viaggio a Tokyo).
3
This year, in addition to the obligatory tribute to the history of Asian cinema, which will touch upon
Bruce Lee's yellow jumpsuit and offer up four absolute must-sees (the brand new restored 4K
versions of Fist of Fury, The Big Boss, The Way of the Dragon and the Game of Death), the eye of the
FEFF will also focus on the glories of Japanese science fiction in a retrospective of 10 films and a
publication entitled Beyond Godzilla, both curated by expert Mark Schilling, which will have as guest
of honour the legendary director Obayashi Nobuhiko!
"Fans,” writes Mark Schilling, “have long considered Japan a science fiction cinematic superpower,
especially as regards one specific sub-genre - movie monsters (kaiju eiga) – and one character:
Godzilla. In fact, the Japanese science fiction films of the Fifties and Sixties, which were packed full
of space rockets, UFOs and all kinds of exotic weapons and gadgets, may have been inspired by
Hollywood's alien invasion films, but their unique style, their energy and their imagination have
influenced not only Japanese animators and directors, but also their counterparts in the West."
So all that remains is to make a date at the Teatro Nuovo, the historical home of the Far East Film
Festival, and wait for Johnnie To's trailer to officially set the ball rolling. Which film will be the
thunderbolt that stuns audiences this year? A debut with a capital 'd', like Yoon Ga-eun's The World
of Us, or perhaps the amazing Ola Bola which shows us the world of Malaysian football? An intense
romantic drama like Larry Yang's Mountain Cry? Or maybe Xu Zheng's unique road movie Lost in
Hong Kong, which exploded at the box office in the former British colony? The funny and tragic story
of redemption Mohican Comes Home by Okita Shuichi (with a surprising punk-hipster Matsuda
Ryuhei)? Or could it be the world premiere of Hime-Anole, which, on the 25th of April, will bring
Japanese teen idol Morita Go down the FEFF 18 red carpet (yes, it's all true, dear fans, it's all true!)?
If you want to find out you'll just have to wait until the night of the 30 th of April - even though, as we
all know, tigers aren't exactly the most patient of creatures!

SAMMO HUNG
a living legend comes to Udine!
After last year’s sensational guests Joe Hisaishi and Jackie Chan, this year the Far East
Film Festival will welcome another big name of Asian cinema: Sammo Hung, who will
also be awarded the Golden Mulberry Award for Lifetime Achievement
On the Closing Night of April 30th, all spotlights will be on Hung and his much awaited
for European première action thriller “The Bodyguard”.
UDINE – After last year’s sensational guests Joe Hisaishi and Jackie Chan, this year the Far East Film Festival
will welcome another big name of Asian cinema: Sammo Hung, a Honk Kong legendary icon admired all over
the world. He is an actor, film director and fight choreographer and over time has managed to revolutionize
the perception of martial arts.
On the Closing Night of April 30th, all spotlights will be on Hung and his action-thriller “The Bodyguard” which
also sees him director of the film. FEFF 18 will pay homage to his extraordinary artistic career which started
at the age of eleven, by awarding him the Golden Mulberry Award for Lifetime Achievement. His career has
been marked by his costant efforts of experimenting and by his ability of fluidly changing genres.
Other than the great Sammo Hung, other people that have been awarded the Golden Mulberry Award for
Lifetime Achievement are Johnnie To, Kim Dong-ho, Michael Werner (of the Fortissimo film production
company), Joe Hisaishi, Jackie Chan and Nansun Shi. The award has been created by Idea Prototipi®, a
company located in the Friuli region which is leader in the metal production industry and which has also
created the three “Mulberries” of the Audience Awards (which are assigned by FEFF’s audience to the Best
Movies in the competion).
Friend and adventure companion of Jackie Chan since he was at the China Drama Academy, Sammo Hung has
worked with some of the greatest actors in the film industry, from Bruce Lee to Yuen Biao, from Jet Li to Andy
Lau and as for the western audience, he starred in the television series Martial Law and also starred in the
cult tv series Walker Texas Ranger, starring Chuck Norris.
FEFF will present the film The Bodyguard as a International Festival Première. It tells the story of a retired
bodyguard who settles into a small village where China and Russia meet. There he meets and befriends a
young girl whose life is threatened by her father’s connection with a local crime lord. The father is played by
Andy Lau. When the young girl and her father disappear, the bodyguard will do everything in his power to
save them.
A perfectly judged mix of tension, growing adrenaline and great martial arts fight scenes together with a
pinch of humour. These are the ingredients that make Sammo’s formula a succesful one and that have
secured him a place in the pantheon of Asian cinema. I’ts impossibile to synthesize Sammo’s film history that
goes from crime stories to slapstick commedies and from the wuxia genre to comic horror movies: it’s best to
meet him in Udine and admire him live!

SAMMO BIO
Sammo Hung was born in Hong Kong in 1952. He is one of Hong Kong’s leading film martial artists and has
worked in all aspects including stuntman, martial arts choreographer, film director and producer (with his
own company Boho Films). Over the years Sammo has astounded audiences with his agility and skills.
Although two decades separates the restaurant action piece in Pedicab Driver (1989) and Ip Man 3 (2010),
Sammo shows no sign of age or weakening of his creativity or skills in the later work. If anything, he seems
even more spectacular in his “older” age. Sammo has referred to himself as a “jack of all acrobats,” and does
not confime himself to any school or style of martial arts. His roles have been wide-ranging: historical
characters, medium to the world of ghosts, contemporary comedies, and even faux-Hollywood big
productions. Sammo is known as “Big Brother” but truly, together with Lau Kar-leung and Yuen Woo-ping, he
is one of the fathers of Hong Kong martial arts cinema as we know it today.
SAMMO QUOTES
My mother, grandfather and grandmother were in Hong Kong for a number of years before I was born. My
grandfather was a builder on film sets. My paternal grandfather (Hung Chung-ho) was a famous producer
who once had his own studio at 41 Grampian Road (in Kowloon) but lost it all to horse-racing.
I was just like any other kid but I didn’t like going to school and was a troublemaker who got into fights in the
streets. I was living with my grandparents and one day a friend suggested that I learn Peking Opera and make
a living as an actor.
Bruce Lee had a big influence on me. He strengthened my nationalist spirit and also had an impact on the
heroes and characters in my films. He had nothing to do with the influence of Wing Chun. Chang Cheh and
Lau Kar-leung were doing films on Hung Kuen (southern style of kung fu) – I thought I could not be as good as
Lau so I took a different path.
It’s easy to film good-looking action films but it’s difficult to write a good action story. In the past the fighting
was done for the sake of fighting and any story could attract the audience. But pure fighting can no longer
attract our audience and they now have higher standards in drama.

AND THE WINNER IS…
5 AWARDS THANKS TO IDEA PROTOTIPI®
As per usual at Far East Film, the best movies are chosen by the audience. To be more precise, three
awards go to the most beloved movies of the entire selection. No tricks whatsoever. The winners are
the ones able, more than any other, to excite the audience, satisfy the longing for romanticism, thrill
and action.
Thanks to our renewed partnership with Idea Prototipi®, company in Basiliano (Udine) that
combines metal work and high technology, this year as well FEFF 18 people’s choice awards will be
statuettes in the shape of mulberries, common trees in the Friulian landscape, though originally
from the East, chosen as the symbol of the meeting between Western and Eastern cultures.
Ending the Far East Film 18 award list, the Gelso alla carriera (Lifetime Achievement Award),
presented by the Festival committee to actors, directors or producers who during their career have
distinguished themselves in the popular Asian cinema scene, and Gelso Nero (Black Mulberry),award
presented by the jury of Black Dragon pass holders.
The prizes are made by Idea Prototipi®, the leading company in metal-work, according to the
following procedures: an actual tree from the Friulian countryside underwent scanning and then,
thanks to a process called TiQu™, was turned into a three-dimensional model and finally made into
an extraordinary artifact without any human intervention.
The mulberries will be announced and awarded on Saturday April 30th during the award ceremony
that will take place at Teatro Nuovo Giovanni da Udine right after midnight and will wrap up Far
East Film 18.

FOCUS ASIA
A new Business platform where Far East meets
Europe: in Udine from the 27th to the 29th April
UDINE – The Udine Far East Film Festival, in partnership with MIA - The International Audiovisual
Market in Rome and with the collaboration of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Audiovisual Fund and DG
Cinema – MIBACT, presents FOCUS ASIA. It is a first step in the direction of strengthening
relations between Europe and Asia in the movie-genres cinema market and offering European
buyers the opportunity of getting in-depth knowledge on new western film productions during
FEFF in April.
During its 18 years of activity, FEFF has managed to promote the Asian markets and give indepth information on its regulations and productive development policies. FEFF has managed to
highlight the potentiality of these markets to the Europeans and create the foundations of a
bilateral path: a kind of mutual exchange with the European Audiovisual industry as the center
of attention. The aim of Focus Asia is to further develop these foundations towards the East,
which has always been leader in the film genre production, in the medium to long term business
perspective.
MIA, which is an ANICA and APT brand and also a product of Fondazione Cinema of Rome, is a
collective tool of internationalization that supports the Italian audiovisual industry (a market
concerning the industry for the industry). Since 1999 the Udine Far East Film Festival has been
the main melting pot for popular Asiatic cinema in Europe. The mutual cooperation between
these two organizations has enabled to create this new business platform that plans to
strengthen relations between the European and Far East film industries.
TIES THAT BIND – an Asian/European Co-Production Workshop organized by the FVG
Audiovisual Fund in partnership with EAVE has been sustaining the Far East Film Community in
analyzing any possible market productivity penetration between Asia and Europe for 8 years. It
is therefore in this scenario that the First Edition of FOCUS ASIA will create a platform where
Eastern and European sales agents and buyers, film distributors, television broadcasters, VOD
Platforms and Internet Player Companies have the opportunity to meet and do business
together. The first edition of Focus Asia will be held at the Cinema Visionario in Udine during the
Far East Film Festival, the 27th, 28th and 29th April and will include film screenings, research
panels and individual meetings.

This year’s selection features a vast diversity of different subjects and genres:
The Sand in My Eyes depicts a childhood of poverty, abuse and melodrama which fuels young Taiwanese girl Jo’s desire
for freedom and fear of placing her trust in those closest to her. Raised in 1990s lower-class Taipei in a family of mixed
fortunes, Jo is forced to reconcile with her memories when she and her sister have to send their mother to a retirement
house. After two relationships and one marriage, Jo has come to terms with her fear of entrapment and has become a
mother herself, but many of the old scars have yet to shed a light on her present life. The Sand in My Eyes will be
produced by Stefano Centini (Hummingbird, Italy/Taiwan) and directed by Chia-Hsin Liu.
The Angel in the Wall is the story of Pietro who under a threat of eviction hides himself inside his flat, ready for anything,
except the cruel twist of fate that will force him to reassess his whole life. He builds a hiding place in the apartment's
long hallway and stays hidden even while a desperate young mother and her almost-blind daughter move in. He spies on
them, trying to maintain his detachment as their voices and habits grow increasingly familiar. Only when Pietro and the
mother come face to face, he sees a long-repressed truth return, turning his world, and the meaning of the story, inside
out. The Angel in the Wall will be produced by Samantha Faccio (Tucker Film, Italy) and directed by Lorenzo Bianchini.
Prey is set in Singapore in 1859. Captain John Clarke, a soldier from the Royal British Army is tasked to investigate the
killings of hundreds by a ferocious man-eating tiger known as the Beast of Siranjong. But after a brutal, bloody chess
game of claws and bullets brought the good captain nowhere close to killing the beast, he will be forced to question
himself if he is truly the hunter or the prey. Prey will be produced and directed by M. Raihan Halim (Papahan Films,
Singapore).
Marijuana Family tells a story of Miyajima who caused a car accident damaging his daughter’s face. He tries to start a
marijuana business to pay for her surgery. He is guided to an undisclosed place by his associate Dibba to pick up as
much marijuana as possible, but Dibba robs all marijuana. Miyajima tries to hang himself but his attempt fails. Losing
everything he has once thought he gained for his family, he finally realizes the importance of his family itself. Marijuana
Family will be produced by Taro Imai (Harakiri Films, Japan) and directed by Yuki Kuwazuru.
Jutlandia takes place in 1950. Five years after World War II ended, Europe became involved in a conflict much farther
from our shores, The Korean War, which set off the Danish personnel and legendary hospital ship “The Jutlandia” to
Korea. On this perilous journey an inexperienced nurse and the neurotic medical student are put to the test of a lifetime
as Jutlandia reaches Korean shores. Before long, the gravity of the situation becomes all too clear to the two idealists
who are suddenly forced to take action and leave the ship to become part of the war. Jutlandia will be produced by
Mikkel Jersin (Snowglobe, Denmark) and directed by Kasper Gaardsøe.
The Proving Ground is based on true events. Fearing for the safety of her family, a Chinese agent, Zhen, is tasked to bring
an international team of scientists to investigate a suspicious viral outbreak during the Chinese Civil war. Her first task is
to recruit maverick Cambridge professor Joseph Needham. Zhen and Needham lead the team into the remote Changbai
Mountains. Tensions rise as the deadly nature of the outbreak becomes apparent: it’s the result of illegal biological
warfare. As the evidence becomes irrefutable, things turn deadly. The Proving Ground will be produced by Charles Lei
(Thunder Communications, China) and directed by Jonathan Finnigan.
Motel Acacia is a fantasy horror. In Southern Spain, a bed haunted by a mythical tree demon, resides in a sex motel
owned by Filipino migrants where it feeds on men and copulates with women. The Bed is kept as a pet by the motel
Janitor to satisfy his sexual fetishes until he falls in love with the new local Spanish cleaning lady who is drawn to the
bed’s darkness. Motel Acacia will be produced and directed by Bradley Liew (Epicmedia Productions,
Malaysia/Philippines).
Another story inspired by true events is Lost Dahlias. In 1972, the infamous Black Dahlia murderer who escaped from
America has been hiding in the Philippines for more than two decades. When martial law is declared by a tyrannical
regime, people start to go missing and turn up dead. The Black Dahlia murderer soon learns that fulfilling his deadly
17
passion is much easier in an unstable society. Lost Dahlias will be produced by Pamela L. Reyes (PelikulaRed, Philippines)
and directed by Mikhail Red.
Suddenly tells a story of an aspiring Dutch actress Lisa Houben who suddenly gets her dream chance in a Japanese
movie about Dejima. A few days before the start of the movie, she is suddenly diagnosed with cancer. She needs
treatment immediately, but she decides to hide it from everybody and tries to pursue her dream. Suddenly will be
produced and directed by Paul Ruven (Talent United Film & Tv, The Netherlands) and will star Stefanie Joosten as Lisa.
Clown is Down is set up in a dark fictional city, where Emre, a teenage street performer, gets mysteriously murdered on
the day of elections. With the hopes of shedding light on the genesis of this crime, a man and a woman from opposite
social classes, but who equally loved Emre, spend a night of discussions to trace back to the final days of the victim. As
they explore the circumstances leading to this tragedy, they come to terms with their own guilt, which unifies them on
an unexpected level. Clown is Down will be produced by Isilay Yanbas (Karlakum Film, Turkey) and directed by Esra
Saydam.

international production companies, directed several short movies and two theatre plays. In 2015, Bożena joined forces

together. Since 2016 Bozena works as an expert for Media Programme at EACEA.

International Events and Projects Coordinator in 2008. From 2011 she works as Office Manager for Filming Europe, the
Association of the European Film Commissions. The association counts 90 members from 30 European countries.

FEFF 18 ready to welcome the next generation
Second edition of Campus to host 10 young journalists from Europe and Asia
As the 18th Far East Festival is preparing to roll out the red carpet for the stars of Asian cinema – among
them none other than martial arts hero Sammo Hung – the festival is also set to welcome the next
generation of young international journalists to the second edition of its FEFF Campus.
A group of 10 aspiring journalists from Europe and Asia have been selected from around 150 applications for
this year’s FEFF Campus which will see them become part of the FEFF family for the duration of the 22nd to
the 30th April 2016 event – and learn skills that will help further their careers as writers. The FEFF Campus
offers journalists aged 26 or under a unique opportunity to be fully hosted by the festival while engaging in a
programme that includes seminars, interviews and workshops focusing on both the art of film and the art of
writing.
Among last year’s FEFF Campus graduates was journalist Gloria Cheung, who soon after returning to Hong
Kong from Italy found employment with the prestigious Financial Times. “FEFF is indeed one of the best
opportunities for any young journalist or writer who has a love for cinema,” says Cheung. “Last year at FEFF, I
went to a Joe Hisaishi concert, saw Jackie Chan in the flesh, interviewed big shots in Asian cinema, and most
importantly made new friends from all over the world who share the same passion for films. “The Campus
programme provided professional guidance on film journalism from which I learnt a lot from the amazing
mentors. It was a dream come true for me.”
Such was the high standard of entrants and the enthusiasm for Asian cinema shown by applicants this year
that the FEFF Campus has been expanded from last year’s eight to 10 participants for the 2016 edition. The
successful candidates will be representing Italy (2), the United Kingdom, France, Spain, China, Japan,
Singapore, Taiwan and Hong Kong.
The FEFF Campus arranges a series of seminars focusing on various aspects of cinema writing and featuring
veteran journalists and film industry professionals, as well as seminars on modern journalism in general.
Campus members are also given the opportunity to meet, mingle with and interview leading players from
Asian cinema today – and to embrace life in and around Udine.
Sonia Kil, a Korean-based journalist and full-time freelance writer with the film trade industry bible Variety, is
another graduate of the 2015 FEFF Campus “The FEFF Campus was an amazing experience,” says Kil. “I got to
meet aspiring journalists from Asia and Europe, and had a chance to step outside my comfort zone to write
different styles of film articles. The invaluable advice by the mentors still inspires me today at Variety. I highly
recommend this program for anyone interested in writing about films and the industry.”
FEFF Campus 2016 has the privilege to be supported by important European and Asian associations and
organizations such as Europa Cinemas, the Hong Kong Foreign Correspondents’ Club and the Singaporebased ASEF (Asia-Europe Foundation).

TEATRO CONTATTO MEETS THE FAR EAST FILM FESTIVAL
THE THEATRE ARTS OF THE EAST COMES FACE TO FACE WITH THE CINEMATOGRAPHIC ARTS OF THE EAST, FOR
AN INTERNATIONAL EVENING THAT BRINGS TO A CLOSE THE SEASON AT CSS AND OPENS WITH A PREVIEW
THIS YEAR’S VOYAGE WITH FEFF 18
The star of the evening is the unforgettable choreography created by Constanza
Macras, one of the most remarkable figures in contemporary dance. Here, she
presents The Ghosts, a work of total theatre. This piece creates a breath taking shortcircuit between dance, theatre, live music and circus: one of the arts China is most
strongly associated with in the global imagination. A realm of balance and acrobatics
that challenge the very laws of gravity.
Macras’ vision of China is unique and non-conventional. Her interest has been
captured by the lives and artistic careers of a number of Chinese acrobats who are
reaching the end of their working lives. These are people who, at the age of just 25,
are already being left behind and quickly forgotten by Chinese society. Ghosts,
indeed, and characters that remind us of figures from Chinese mythology, the
“hungry ghosts”, lost souls that have been forgotten by their descendants, destined to
a barren existence in a lost realm. The Ghosts offers them a temporary return to life,
once more making their stories and their art visible and thrilling.

PARADOXA – JAPANESE ART TODAY
CURATED BY DENIS VIVA
What is happening in contemporary Japanese art? What generation is emerging after the worldwide success
of artists such as Murakami or Sugimoto? The Casa Cavazzini Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art
presents, for the first time in Italy, a unique overview of current Japanese art. Made up of projects created
specifically for the occasion, the exhibition involves five artists, almost all appearing in the country for the
first time, and who all share at least two characteristics: they are all working after the great crisis of 2008 and
during the decline of otaku culture in art, and each of them subverts the commonplace and the appearance
of everyday objects through manipulations and effects of displacement. Manya Kato reveals the paradox of
reality through the improper use of certain instruments, Yuuki Matsumura turns accident and defect into a
transformation of the most trivial things, Takahiro Iwasaki produces tiny, fragile sculptures made of bristles,
hair and fine fibres, Taro Izumi turns the high-end design products provided him by Calligaris into abstract
sculptures and Taturo Atzu (aka Tatzu Nishi), with the support of Illy, presents an alienating piece of public art
around one of the city’s most prestigious monuments.

VIAGGIO A TOKYO, VINCENZO FILOSA
CURATED BY CANICOLA
Viaggio a Tokyo (Tokyo story) is a project developed by the Far East Film Festival and based around the
graphic novel by Vincenzo Filosa, cartoonist and translator from Japanese.
Trip to Tokyo recounts the journey of a naive Westerner to the capital of Japan – a surreal adventure in the
footsteps of the great gekiga authors Tsuge Tadao and his brother Yoshiharu. A tribute to the heroes of
manga, Viaggio a Tokyo is a fresh, personal look at the big city – a rickety diary in search of meaning in a life
full of compromise and defeat. A dreamlike, grotesque story of the habits of the local and foreign inhabitants
set among the red light districts, suicide forests, karaoke, kissaten manga, love hotels, Buddhist temples and
jeans boutiques.
A journey and a sentimental education in a big city and in the images of Japanese comics, where pop icons
encounter less well-known authors.
The exhibition presents one hundred original drawings, pencils, original gekiga books – the book’s sources of
inspiration – and the author’s diary. The project is a collaboration between the Centro Espressioni
Cinematografiche and Bologna’s Canicola cultural association, famous for its publishing of contemporary
comics.
Opening: Friday the 22nd of April at 16.30.
With a free sake-based drink offered by Gekkeikan

UDINE, ITALY ASIA
Far East Film Events
100 events right in the heart of the city!
We want FEFF visitors to feel – as they should – right at home: that's the philosophy and approach of FEFF
and of Far East Film Eventi. Over the years, we've created a network which runs through the fabric of Udine,
involving the people responsible for looking after the city from a political, administrative and promotional
standpoint in increasing numbers. A festival within a festival, invented and produced by Cec and Claimax,
which brings together events which are now part of Udine's tradition and which connect the historical
stronghold of the FEFF - the Teatro Nuovo - to all of Udine's Asian zones, which will be even more numerous
this year thanks to the new FEFF OFF, a project which aims to take over the city, revealing it from the inside
out and highlighting its lesser-known spaces. Thanks to the collaboration of FAI Udine delegation and
Udineidea, shops and palazzos in the city centre will host Made in Asia events.
Alongside these alternative spaces there is also our consolidated relationship with various locations around
the city: Piazza San Giacomo will once again host the FEFF Market which, in the first weekend, will offer Asian
products (FEFF Market - Made in Asia) and in the second will welcome designers and creatives (FEFF Market Art & Design). Piazza San Giacomo will also be home to other important events, such as the highly anticipated
Far East Cosplay Contest, held on Sunday the 24th of April, whose first prize this year is a flight to Japan
(offered by the HIS agency). As per tradition, Giorgia Cosplay will be the official presenter of the event. As
well as Cosplay, this year will also see an entire day dedicated to gamers: the ex-Doretti Typography will host
showcases of indie and retro video games, arcade cabinets, Wii U contests, workshops and lectures on game
culture, and the day will conclude with a contest in the Piazza, with live commentary from the legendary
Cjastrons from Radio Onde Furlane.
Making what's on offer for 2016 even more appetising is a space totally dedicated to Asian cuisine: Far East
Food, where visitors to FEFF can take a mouth-watering journey to the Far East. A food palace will be set up
in Piazza XX Settembre offering tastings, meals, cocktails and talks, and guiding visitors' palates through the
flavours of the Far East.
Besides the attendance token to gain access to all non-free activities (cost for a single token: € 4; loyalty card:
5 tokens for € 15), the festival presents the second edition of Panino Gourmet Contest: 4 chefs competing
(Massimiliano Sabinot from “Vitello d’Oro”, Andrea Zuccolo from “Caffè Tomaso”, Roberto Gruden from “Casa
della Contadinanza”, Antonio Mereu from “Hostaria alla Tavernetta”) in creating a special Asian-Friulian
recipe that will be judged by the audience; the contest will take place in partnership with Turismo del Vino
FVG (red and white wine, from wineries participating in the event, will be served with the food).
Once again, a rich calendar of events aimed not exclusively at film buffs but open to all: a crowd of people of
all ages ready to throw themselves wholeheartedly into the party!
