Come and explore the Whiteshell for yourself
• Be sure matches are extinguished.
Break them in half before
discarding.
• Build no fires except in a
designated firepit or use a camp
stove. Before leaving make sure
your fire is completely out.
• Be careful with your cigarettes,
cigars and pipe ashes. Crush them
thoroughly before discarding.
Never toss them from a vehicle.
• Please! Do not litter.
• Be sensitive to wildlife. Bears can
be dangerous and should not be
fed. Food must be stored away
from your campsite, preferably
in a locked vehicle, to avoid
attracting hungry animals. Do not
store food in your tent.
• Swim in designated areas.
• Strong currents and variable
water levels of the Winnipeg
River can be hazardous to your
safety.
• In case of injury or illness contact
a Campground Attendant or Park
Patrol Officer. They can assist you
to reach medical help.
• Canoeists and hikers travelling in
backcountry areas should advise
a friend of their intended
destination and anticipated length
of trip.
• Backcountry camping is only
allowed at designated campsites.
• It is illegal to use or transport
elm firewood.
• Out of Province Firewood can
spread harmful pests and
destroy our forests - buy it
locally, burn it locally.
O tter Falls is found in the rustic
environment of the Boreal Shield, but close to
modern conveniences like a resort store,
restaurant, and marina.
The campground is located at the northern end
of Whiteshell Provincial Park, a large natural
area that is characterized by numerous lakes,
rivers and rugged Precambrian Shield. The
park accommodates a diversity of recreational
uses and is a great place to view wildlife. Keep
your binoculars handy for the many viewing
opportunities that will appear.
Otter Falls campground is situated along the
powerful Winnipeg River. The river’s strength
was so powerful during fur trading times that
canoes were sometimes tipped over while trying
to shoot the rapids. Otter Falls was one of the
locations where rushing waters claimed a
canoe’s provisions. The supplies remained on
the river’s bottom until underwater archaeology
conducted near the falls recovered numerous
artifacts from years past.
The campground is within driving distance of
many area attractions, such as self-guiding and
mountain bike trails. Pine Point Trail is a 8.2
km self-guiding trail that consists of two loops
that lead through the boreal forest, a special
spot for those looking for scenic vistas of
waterfalls and rapids. Foresters Footsteps, a
little farther down PR 307, takes you through
both a natural forest and planted jack pine and
red pine forest. For something a little different,
why not try a pontoon boat tour?
Visit the Whiteshell Natural History Museum
- a log cabin that displays a superb collection
of bird and animal specimens of the boreal
forest. It is open in May on weekends only and
daily from June through August. Interpreters
from the museum also give tours of the
Bannock Point Petroforms. Discover "boulder
mosaics" in the shapes of snakes, fish, turtles
and birds, made centuries ago by Aboriginal
people. They are considered sacred places where
communication with the spirits can take place.
