REIMAGINED Annual Report 2015 Protecting children, strengthening families, and empowering our communities through innovative, life-enhancing services. Because of you, lives are reimagined Dear Friends and Family, On behalf of the Board of Directors and the many talented, committed staff and volunteers who make up our Robins’ Nest family, we would like to thank you for supporting our mission of protecting children, strengthening families and empowering the communities in which they live. Through your generosity, Robins’ Nest improved the lives of over 10,000 children and families in 2015. We know that the skills and resilience our clients gained this past year will have a positive impact on our communities for years to come. 2015 was another year of growth for the agency. Our annual budget increased by thirteen percent, or approximately $2.2 million. This growth translates to 12 new or expanded programs, the addition of 30 new staff positions and five new locations. Our continual, decade-long trend of sustained growth is part of our commitment to seek out new ways to serve the families of South Jersey, strengthen the staff delivering those services and map out a bold, strategic direction to ensure Robins’ Nest will remain the gold standard for protecting children and strengthening families. As you read through the 2015 Annual Report, Lives Reimagined, you will learn more about some of our programs and the impact that our important work has in the community. At Robins’ Nest, we always look at the glass as “half full” and work beyond life’s most challenging obstacles to create stronger and happier children and families. While much has changed for the agency since1968, our love for family and a commitment to excellence has remained at the core of everything that we do. Our ambitious mission would not be possible without your support. Thank you for your loyal commitment to children and families. Sincerely, Anthony DiFabio, Psy.D. President and CEO Robert B. In 2015, these programs made a difference in the lives of over 10,000 children and their families. We provide valuable life skills training, mentoring, accountability, and encouragement through our Programs for Adolescents. These teens are working to turn their life around as they transition into adulthood. Our Prevention & Parent Education Programs guide new, at-risk parents so they will raise healthy babies and ultimately, become a self-sufficient, successful family. Programs supporting the community, like our Family Success Centers, offer a place for community members to gather together for education, fun, and empowerment activities. Each center is totally unique in their programming because they are led with the direction of a parent/community advisory board and take into account the specific needs and interests of their community members. Our Crisis Response Program responds within an hour to help stabilize critical situations before they escalate. Once that has been accomplished, we provide ongoing support to enhance communication and help the family to get back on track. Nearly a third of our families are working within our Child Permanency Programs, which create stability and consistency for children. It might be a family that is at risk of having their children removed from the home and needs to strengthen family relationships and functioning, or their children have been removed and the parents need encouragement and guidance as they work toward reunification, or a “new family” that needs support as they transition through foster, kinship, or adoption. For teens and young adults who can’t live at home, Robins’ Nest provides safe, secure Group Home and Residential Programs where they set and achieve goals, helping them to become independent. For our neighbors who are simply going through rough times, Robins’ Nest provides outstanding Counseling Services, on an individual or group basis. Whether someone needs help with a sudden loss or is having difficulty with longer-term issues, or with a child who needs further guidance, our licensed counselors will develop a plan to address these issues in a timely and positive manner. Our programs are the result of our belief that with the right kind of support, an optimistic outlook and respectful, experienced care, we can make a measurable difference in the lives of our neighbors here in South Jersey. We won’t be happy until every story has a happy ending. With a wife and two kids at home, Jonathan needed to act fast. He knew that his resume was outdated, and probably wouldn’t be noticed by employers. Jonathan wasn’t sure where he could go for help. A friend from church told Jonathan that his local Family Success Center could help him write his resume and search for a new position. Jonathan stopped in, and was immediately surprised by the warm greeting he received, and the friendly and supportive staff. Within minutes he and the Family Partner were in the computer lab, where Jonathan learned the newest techniques for showing off his impressive experience. Within a half hour, Jonathan felt more confident than he had in weeks. Thanks to the help he received at the Family Success Center, Jonathan was able to find a great new job that was close to home. Three months later, he “At the Family returned to the Center Success Centers, to thank the staff—only one plus one doesn’t to find himself in the equal two. It equals middle of family game so much more. The night! He called his Centers’ potential to provide hope and wife and had her bring change through the the kids along, and collaborative energies they’ve been coming of the residents and back ever since! Jonathan even signed up to lead a workshop series focused on building confidence in young adult males. What began as a simple job search ended up with an entire family finding a great place to make friends, learn new things and create a stronger family bond. But this happy event was overshadowed by the tragic loss of a close family member. Don descended into a deep depression and, blinded by pain and suffering, he could not be the responsible, caring, and loving father that Jared needed. Some parents need additional guidance in learning how to handle the stresses that come with raising children. Our Therapeutic Visitation succeeds because we encourage parents to see the possibilities for themselves and their children. Jared was placed into foster care and Don was referred to Therapeutic Visitation Services at Robins’ Nest, where he received the therapy he needed to begin healing. As Don gradually came to terms with his loss and understood his reaction to it, he learned to bond with his Therapeutic Visitation Programs promote stronger family bonds: Robins’ Nest Therapeutic Visitation programs assisted more than 100 families in achieving permanency after they had their children removed due to abuse and neglect. newborn son. Over the course of a year, Don and Jared spent more and more time together on supervised visits. Don came to realize that he could be a great father. Jared moved back in with Don, who is looking forward to being the best father, and guiding Jared to a successful future. Both father and son continue to attend events that Robins’ Nest holds throughout the year for families that were once separated, but are now reunited! All names have been changed to protect privacy. “Therapeutic Visitation Services are all about empowering families and assisting in their reunification through therapy, support and advocacy.” Lois Thompson M.S.Therapeutic Visitation Services Program Director 100 families Robins’ Nest Annual Report 2015 pg. 7 Lives Reimagined: Hope Restored Robins’ Nest Annual Report 2015 pg. 8 Rebecca and Karen’s Story Rebecca’s childhood was one of neglect and abuse, and she turned to substance abuse as a means of coping with the trauma and pain. She felt that nobody cared about her—and her feelings were probably justified, since so few people in her life had taken the time to be there for her. Then she was introduced to Karen, a Robins’ Nest volunteer mentor. Karen’s positive, uplifting temperament was contagious. For the next year, Karen and Rebecca spent many Saturdays enjoying activities in the community. Sometimes they’d see a movie. Other times they’d have lunch or dinner together. And sometimes they’d just walk in the park, talking, laughing, and sharing their thoughts. These positive experiences encouraged Rebecca, who discovered that she was lovable and that life was worth living to its fullest. Once an uninvolved, careless student, Rebecca became enthusiastic about learning —and she even joined the school softball team! She will graduate from high school next year and pursue a college education—something she would never have even considered without the passionate encouragement of her mentor, Karen. “The dedication and enthusiasm of each and every one of our volunteers is truly amazing. They are invaluable to our work with children and families. We really mean it when we say, we couldn’t do it without them!” Liz McLaughlin Associate Director of Development All names have been changed to protect privacy.
