It focuses on Italian language acquisition and communication. Classes are instructed with a communicative language teaching approach; therefore the focus is entirely on real conversations about real subjects. That way communication is the engine of learning. Our classroom activities include role-playing, interviews, games, pair-work, information gap and TPR (Total Physical Response). Our learners are encouraged to speak by using language functions related to the specific situation. The use of authentic texts, songs and games provide a natural environment to promote language and enhance correct pronunciation. Monday through Thursday study hall is conducted by SDFAS teachers and on Friday by our daycare staff. Parents are requested to not pick up their children during study hall, unless there is an emergency. In this instance, for security reasons, parents must first check in at the office to pick up their children. There is no need to register for study hall except on Friday. This will be a unique Minecraft world that you will be able to play from home. Whether you are a building novice or a pro, we will have challenging tasks that will teach you not only how to measure and build with blocks, but also how to use redstone to make cool virtual contraptions, and for the more advanced, how to use java and texture packs to create custom "French food” for your player to eat in the game. We will also discuss how to set-up a server in command line, and the rules and etiquette of being a server administrator in the SDFAS Minecraft world. In this 10 classes you will find out how a Rubik's cube works, and learn some of the algorithms and pattern recognitions that some of the world's fastest speedsolvers use to achieve their solve times of under 10 (or even under 5) seconds. These are skills that help build a strong sense of spatial recognition and visual memory, some of the building blocks of abstract theoretical math. Each student will receive a free "speed cube" at the first class - these aren't the Rubik's cubes you find in toy stores but rather ones especially designed for speedsolving that have been engineered to turn quickly and accurately. This is a rare opportunity to take lessons from one of southern California's top speedsolvers. It will include a brief overview of historical and stylistic influences on aesthetic values and social implications of cinema, as an academic portion of the course. The main portion of the course will include studying the aesthetics and practice of film and video production techniques, instruction in equipment use combined with consideration of aesthetics, visual storytelling, and craft at a basic level. He would give an overview of the different areas of the film-making process as the students themselves get hands-on with creating their own film as the final project for the course. Class length would be 1h30m, with an even portion of lecture as well as hands-on exercises to assist the students in understanding the material. "La coinche" is a variant of French Belote and is a popular card game in France that develops strong logic, math, strategic and cooperative skills. This is a winter activity involving shorter or longer distances of 3 to 4 kilometers for all age groups and levels of competition. The workouts are also designed for young people who have never practiced cross country running. They are meant to be fun so young people starting in this sport will not be discouraged. Cancellation policy: For parents who are not sure if their children like surfing, you can cancel after the first class with a full refund minus the first class cost. Parents have to drop off and pick up their children to and from La Jolla Shores beach. Wet suits are available for rent. Price: $270 Children will learn to surf in small groups at California’s #1 Surf School owned by twin sisters Izzy and Coco Tihanyi in La Jolla Shores in a fun and encouraging environment. Your child will benefit from this activity by developing balance, athleticism, and self- confidence with our positive and highly trained instructors. Surfboards and rash guards are provided for the 1.5 hour weekly surf lesson. Classes will feature detailed instruction in: ocean awareness, waves and currents, water safety, surf etiquette, surfing equipment, surfing history, global surf geography. All levels are accepted. The surf program for SDFAS, La Jolla Surf Camp for boys and girls, is run by the top instructors at Surf Diva. The Tihanyi family has 2 children attending SDFAS, 3rd grade and 6th grade, who also surf in the ASP program and are very involved in the daily school activities and fundraising. Children must know how to swim. Parents need to fill out the package available from the office, sign the waiver and provide weight and height of their children. We will be inspired by their art and create our own work using paint, mosaics, collage, etc. Children will learn about different artists (from Leonardo da Vinci to Matisse, Picasso, Monet, Rousseau…) and create cave paintings from Lascaux, dragons and heroes from Hokusai, to dancers in pastel from Degas. Or maybe design a wonderful jungle from Rousseau or do their self-portrait like Andy Warhol. Let’s be creative and have fun. Biography In 2010 Clark Gracie was awarded his black belt under his father Grand Master Carley Gracie. Being the grandson of Brazilian JiuJitsu founder Carlos Gracie, Clark has had a large legacy to live up to. He does it with grace, fluidity and apparent ease. Under the tutelage of his father Carley Gracie, and his coach Rodrigo Medeiros, Clark has become the most active competing member of the Gracie family. The majority of the year you will find Clark teaching at his San Diego academies, but also enjoys traveling abroad, mostly for tournaments and seminars, but also to taste the flavors of jiu-jitsu worldwide. He created his own Adrenalina brand in 2001 and owns a shop in the local neighborhood of Bird Rock. Pablo, already into extreme sports began practicing action sports at age 8. He couldn’t help it; it was in his blood. He didn’t realize it in that moment, but at that young age he marked the path that he would follow the rest of his life. At the age of 14, he became a windsurf instructor. He is very energetic and always wants to try new things. He began traveling throughout the country experiencing every kind of extreme sport he could, specially skateboarding. One day he started to film his friend practicing, and that day was a milestone for him. Not only is he an extreme sport athlete, he knows how to produce television shows. He also organizes a skateboard marathon every year in San Diego to raise money for Parkinson’s research, “The Adrenalina Skateboard Marathon”. Catherine Eng is an award-winning digital designer and developer and a principal of the brand and development consultancy, Touch Grove, with her husband Mark. Kanna earned a Bachelors of Arts Degree in Performing Arts Education from Tamagawa University in Tokyo in 2000. After graduating, she continued to train in Hip Hop, Funk styles, Tap, Jazz, Ballet, House, UK Jazz fusion and more in Japan, the U.K. and the U.S. Since 2001 she’s performed in street dance musicals, music videos, film and concerts in Japan. For thirty years, she has been a professor in Psychology and Communication in Nursing Schools in France, a facilitator for self-development workshops and a volunteer tutor for children with learning disabilities. Now living in California, she shares her time between several part-time jobs in different schools (Berlitz, UCSD, LTC, From English to French and SDFAS) teaching mostly French, but also handicrafts (another of her passions) and self-help classes. Susan is an actor, dancer, musician, recreational music facilitator, teaching artist and life coach. University of Belgrade as a FLE teacher and has been teaching French for many years before coming to United States. She was working with different age groups and cultures. He has been shooting Olympic archery for about 5 years now and has been coaching for an equal amount of time. He has lead teams as a player to place in OAS competitions and also as a coach. For example when he lead archery at SDFAS, students got several medals in all 3 tournaments in the spring of 2016. He is all about learning the material but yet having a great time with it. Biography Leslie Padilla has been instructing the After School Activity Creative Movement, Pre-Ballet and Pre-Tap dance at the French-American School for nine consecutive years. Leslie’s experiences in dance, design, theater, and writing have taken her from New York to San Diego. She has studied a wide range of dance styles in college, master classes, and dance intensives, and continues to teach many forms of dance throughout San Diego to dancers at all levels and ages. Since 2005, Leslie has been an instructor and choreographer for San Diego Civic Dance Arts. She served on the SDCDA Board of Directors for five years, and currently dances with the Civic Dance Arts’ Adult Ensemble in annual Dance Collage Concerts, and other performances citywide. Erwann has been a France Champion on the athletic triathlon team (1987) and also Champion of the Rhone department in the long jump and 100 m (1986-1987). Before coming to San Diego Erwann was also a football coach in France for children up to 13 years old (2008-2014). He is also a personal trainer for children, adults and seniors. Fabiola Gagne has more than 20 years of experience teaching voice and piano lessons to students of all levels. Students will learn the basics of piano, play songs of their choice, and learn musical theory. Fabiola develops a curriculum that fits the level and abilities of each student, as all children progress and learn differently. Children are encouraged to try learning an instrument, and piano is the perfect choice!
