President’s Message
To all the Fremont Art Association Members and Friends. I want to thank you for showing con<idence in me as I step into the position of President of the FAA. I consider this role to be one of responsibility: safekeeping all the best attributes of the FAA, strengthening those areas that need attention, and joining with our artists as we move creatively forward into a new year. There are quite a few issues to tackle but I am con<ident that with the help and support of the Board of Directors, and the membership, that the FAA will be a strong, solvent, and viable organization: A place for art to be made, seen, and appreciated. Our mission is to bring the love and spirit of art, in all its forms, to the public, educating and involving as many folks as possible along the way. Let’s do it!

Gallery Directors’ 3 Cents Worth
The
gallery looks so nice with all the new
artwork. A huge “THANK YOU” goes to
everyone who has brought their beautiful
artwork to show.
This quarter we have expanded the type of art
we are taking to include fiber arts and cottage
arts. This means we have lovely scarves, some
which are cashmere, and some which are silk
with designs made with a Japanese process
called kanoko shibori (similar to tie-dyeing).
We have wine crates up cycled into footstools
and jewelry boxes, and there are some felted
items. We have jewelry, ceramics, glass and
more. All this is an effort to attract more
customers into the gallery who might buy some
of these items as well as the paintings and
photography on the walls.
Our monthly artist demos got off to a fun start
with Mary Rosiles who helped everyone sculpt
a bust in clay. Next month we will go to the
Edison Theater and the Niles Essanay Silent
Film Museum at 37417 Niles Boulevard, where
we will hold our meeting and then see a 1919
silent film, “The Dragon Painter.” After the
movie,
Rena Kiehn will talk about film as an art form.
We have some workshops planned, too.
Nancy Benton will be teaching a hands-on
painting class on the fourth Saturday of
January through April, where each participant
will take home a completed work of art. On
February 5, 6, and 7, Bryan Mark Taylor will
teach a workshop on
Plein Air using oils.
And on March 14,
15, and 16, Grace
Rankin will teach a
workshop in
Collage and Mixed
Media. Sign up for
one or more of
these workshops soon. Look in Local Color
or on the FAA website for more information.
Our first showcase of the year will be for
Mitch Neto.
The showcase runs from
th
January 17 to February 1st. The 1st Quarter
reception and showcase reception is on
January 18th, from 1:30 to 4:00 pm. Please
join us.
Come visit the gallery!

Recap from Last Month’s Guest Artist, Mary Rosiles
By Helene Roylance
On January 7, Guest Artist Mary Rosiles returned for
another engaging demonstration at the Fremont Art
Gallery.
Each attendee was given 6 lbs of clay, and under
Mary’s lively instruction, was led through the process
of sculpting a bust.
She did an incredible job
describing each step of the process with colorful
descriptions and genuine enthusiasm that made it
easy for the group to follow along.
She provided insightful instruction on technique,
from forming the initial contour of the bust, to using
proportions to find the proper placement and balance
of facial features. Under her guidance, the attendees
created an impressive collection of busts within the
short time allotted.
Mary's presentation was not only fun and exciting,
but filled with helpful tips and advice that would be
relevant to any portrait artist regardless of medium.

Cinema Place Gallery
Hello and Happy New Year to you all,
Although it’s been quiet from the Cinema Place Gallery newsletter, we have been busy behind
the scenes creating new opportunities for the community to support local arts.
I know many of you have been waiting for a virtual gallery where artists can post their work
and art lovers can find the work. Well, not
only can we announce a virtual gallery,
but we are super excited to announce a
new mobile app for posting art, locating
art, commenting on the art and even
creating tours that can be shared with
your friends and followers.
The app is called *Tuux* which is a
Mayan word for ‘where’. The banner
image above is a sample of some of the art
you can find in San Francisco using the
Tuux app! Please visit rtzat.com to learn
more and submit your email to join the
mailing list. You can also respond to this
newletter to express your interest!
Sid Hamadeh at Eko Tea and Coffee House continues to sponsor an 'Art Wall' where the art of
local artists is always on display. Enjoy some art with your favorite beverage and crepe or sweet
treat.
The Hayward Arts Council has been active in establishing new partnerships for local
galleries. HAC is now showing art in the Alameda County Law Library; and hopefully we will be
showing art in the new Hayward Public Library. Keep watching the "Newsletter" for tips on how
you can help convince the City Council the space for a café should be an Art Gallery. HAC is also
working closely with the Rotary Club on "ArtScape" their annual art auction to be held in March
2015.

Collective Musings," an exhibit featuring
the work of Marks Collective, a group of
five abstract artists linked through their
association with San Jose State
University, will open at Olive Hyde Art
Gallery, 123 Washington Blvd., Fremont,
with a reception from 7 to 9 p.m. on
Friday, January 9 and run through
January 31, 2015.
Based in the South Bay and Santa Cruz
Areas the Marks Collective artists’
inspiration is based on various aspects of
contemporary life. The artists themselves
reflect the enormous diversity of the San
Francisco Bay Area. Each of the artists
have earned either a BFA or MFA from
San Jose State University. Painting,
drawing, and printmaking are the
primary media to be exhibited at Olive
Hyde.
Robbie Sugg, a Berkeley native, works
primarily in drawing, painting, and
printmaking. His first book, “Koccha,
and Other Poems” was published in
March 2014.
After working as an engineer for 15
years, Gloria Huet decided to study art
and work as a full-time artist. The work

Gloria has participated in group and solo
exhibitions in the Bay Area and in
Chicago, Illinois.
Planning to showcase works of oil,
Matthew Weston Taylor’s paintings are
inspired by thoughts about duty, selfawareness, and picnics. \. Matthew has
also studied at the Academia di Belle
Arts in Florence, Italy.
To Colleen Akakaki, “It’s all about the
mark” and the ability of a mark to
express an emotion. It can become a line
or create a feeling of joy or sadness.
Working from intuition, Colleen lets the
images emerge from her subconscious
experiences.
Kyoko Fischer, a printmaker and
painter, specializes in combining
multiple techniques to create her
monoprints. For her paintings she uses
oil and encaustic, a technique using
wax..
Olive Hyde is pleased to invite our
community to enjoy this exhibit of
contemporary works presented by the
Marks Collective.
