Cadillac Day held at Lars Anderson Park,
Museum of Transportation on May 21, 2006
was a great turnout with 82 Cadillacs and 2
LaSalles. I was a bit disappointed however
that our club had only four ‘58s on the show
field. I know the weatherman predicted a
thunder storm after 3 pm but the day was a
real comfortable one. Most of those who had to travel some
distance left about 2 PM and the rest stayed around until 3 or so.
We saw Ken Washwell’s Seville for the first time and although
we saw Chuck Schiel’s Sixty Special last year when it was owned
by Bob Barron it again was one of the standouts at the show with
its new owner who just had the engine compartment detailed by
Ken Washwell. Tom Sullivan’s Biarritz and my Fleetwood Sedan
have been at the shows before and they still draw lots of attention
by the public and other year Cadillac and ‘58 owners.
It was good to see the following ‘58 members who attended the
show either as spectators or with a different year Cadillac: Alan
Feltham, Doug Menz, Paul Healy, Joel Mozer, John Binder,
Joe Gildea, George Phillips, Bob Barron, Dick Stall and Jeff
Burland.
We also had a new member join the club at the show: Logan
Nutter who resides in Brookline, MA. Logan is the son of
members Herb and Martha Nutter of Vermont.
I want to thank member John Binder who again this year spent
the day working with member Joe Gildea at the Registration Desk.

20th century. And, for years many a salesperson for other goods was often
heard to pitch, “this is the Cadillac of ____________ (you fill in the
blank... lawn mowers, dishwashers, TVs, and so on). No doubt, Cadillac
stood for excellence in style, quality, performance and just about any other
category you wished to apply. In 1958, other than the limited production
Eldorados (including Seville, Biarritz and Brougham), the Fleetwood
Sixty Special was king of the country club. Immediately identifiable by
the huge, bright, grooved, stainless steel panels which graced the entire
bottom half of the rear flanks, including full fender skirts, it also rode on a
133” wheelbase, a full three and a half inches longer than the standard
Cadillacs and Eldorados. Overall body length was 225.3 inches, about
eight inches longer than the entry level Caddys. This additional length and
the added bright work made the Fleetwood 60 Special a stand out
wherever it went. “Shopping centers” were a relatively new thing in the
mid fifties and the upscale department stores were mostly found in
downtown St. Louis or in the Central West End. Very few people in those
days owned an SUV (I’m not even sure it was a term back then) and they
certainly weren’t the type of vehicle a person of upper social status would
want to be seen driving in public for heaven’s sake! But a long, low,
chrome- drenched Cadillac... now your talkin’! My aunt Dorothy could
only have dreamed of being dropped of at the door to Sax 5th Avenue on
Maryland Avenue in a new ‘58 Sixty Special on her way to shop for a new
fur coat, because while a handful of successful people drove base line
Cadillacs, this upper crust Caddy was the choice for the over achievers...
doctors, lawyers, CEO.s and the like.
Interior appointments were given equal attention to detail as well with
great fit and finish, luxurious carpets, leathers and fabrics, prompting
lavish praise from automobile reviewers of the day.
Popular convenience options in 1958 included air conditioning at
$474.00; a 6-way power seat for $103.00; gold finish grill ($27.00);
remote control trunk release ($43.00); 8:20x15” white sidewall tires
($55.00); an AM radio with power antenna and a “rear seat speaker”
($164.00); E-Z-Eye tinted glass ($46.00); power (electric) door locks
($57.00); air suspension ($214.00); automatic headlight control (dimmer
for all those two lane, country roads you traveled- $48.00) and power
windows... get this, EIGHT switches, one for each vent window (front and
rear) and one for each of the four side windows ($108.00). It took a hefty
battery to crank this cushy ride over with all the power accessories on
board.
Powering this 5,000 pound land yacht was a somewhat modest, 310
horsepower, Cadillac overhead valve V-8 engine displacing 365 cubic
inches. The 335 h.p. Eldorado engine which enlisted three 2-barrel
carburetors to nourish the thirsty power plant, could be ordered on all
Cadillacs for an additional $134.00, but don’t leave home without your
Skelly card as single digit MPG figures were not only likely, but expected.
The next year, Cadillac would introduce a somewhat more efficient and
less thirsty 390 cubic inch engine in all models, “somewhat” being the key
word here.
What’s in a name? The name “Fleetwood” comes from the custom
coach builder located in Fleetwood, Pennsylvania that manufactured
custom bodies for many auto makers during the early twentieth century.
This was in the time when prestigious auto makers like Cadillac, Packard,
Lincoln and a score of others, would send a bare chassis to a custom coach
builder, such as Fleetwood and others, along with specific plans from the
customer as to just what they wanted. Fleetwood then took the order and
produced a virtually handmade, custom built vehicle to customer specs,
resulting in a one-of-a-kind automobile. Eventually the Fisher Body
division of General Motors bought controlling interest in the Fleetwood
Company and with it all rights to the Fleetwood moniker.
The model reference “Sixty Special” first appeared twenty years earlier
in 1938 and was used by Cadillac to designate a four door sedan of
superior quality and finish. The name continued through the 1964 model
year. From 1965 forward, the higher level sedan was simply referred to as

Dear Dave...
Thank you for the kind words. I'm glad you enjoyed my story about
the 1958 Sixty Special. I have always admired Cadillacs since a young
child. To set the record straight, I do not own a Cadillac at this time, and
have never owned a '58. I DID own a 1960 Coupe de Ville, however from
approximately 1986 to 1992. I loved the car, but as sometimes happens,
had to sell if for financial reasons. I sold it to a good friend who I knew
would care for it in appropriate fashion.
I am flattered that you asked me to join your unique club. I was aware
of it, as I stumbled across it on the internet while researching my story
about the '58 Fleetwood Sixty Special. I would like to say I belong to
many auto clubs, but at present the only one I am member in is the Buick
Club of America. If I were to join all the clubs, it would cost me a
fortune. I'm hoping some clubs may grant me an honorary membership.
After reading your membership requirements, however, I would be
happy to send you the one time membership fee of $22.00 and will do so
as soon as possible. I do have one favor to ask in return. I am presently in
a self syndication campaign and am seeking newspapers across the

FRONT WHEEL ALIGNMENT PROCEDURES
Correct alignment is necessary to keep the front wheels in true
running position, and it’s a “must” for easy, precise driving.

Use a 0-25 foot pound torque wrench when adjusting
front wheel bearings. Seat bearings at 16-17 foot pounds. Back off
and retighten to 4 foot-pounds. If cotter pin cannot be installed
with nut in this position, file flat side of nut.
Checking Standing Height
Before checking standing height or wheel alignment, make sure
that trunk is not loaded and gasoline tank is full. Add 6 pounds of
weight for every missing gallon of gasoline. Total weight of a full
tank is 120 pounds.

Dave,
I finally took a shot of my Coupe DeVille.
Just wish owner #2 did not pass away. He loved the car and I
would have liked him to have seen it when I finally got everything
working. It is so neat. A 58 Cadillac in NY City was a big deal in
mint condition in 1970. My god, it was only 12 years old! That
owner helped develop Shake and Bake. He said he had a lot of
people looking at him going to work in the Caddy. First owner
covered the entire interior in plastic for 12 years. The interior
smells new to this day. A 12 year old Caddy today is a big bore.
No one would gloat over it or keep it in heated storage for so many
years.

On cars with coil springs, the front standing height must be
equal on both sides within 3/8 inch.
On cars equipped with air suspension, air pressure in the
accumulator tank should be maintained at 125 p.s.i. or above.
Standing height at left front should be 4-5/16 inches. Adjust at
front leveling valve adjusting link. If right front differs from left by
more than ¼ inch, adjust right rear leveling valve adjusting link.
The rear standing height must be equal on both sides within ½
inch. Shims are available to obtain proper height on cars with coil
springs. On air suspension cars, right and left sides should be equal
within 1/8 inch. Correction is made at adjusting link for left
leveling valve.

now from McVey's on a limited basis. The
fender crests (except for the Fleetwood) are

Wheel Alignment Preliminaries
1. Check car for curb weight and standing height.
2. Check tire inflation.
3. Center car on alignment plates.
4. Block rear wheels.
5. Mark tire runout.

Curb weight means – Trunk is empty and gasoline tank is full.
Since bubble-type levels are used, in the measuring procedures,
it is very important to have car level.

adjustment of both bolts.

A large caster change will affect camber, by moving the
upper suspension arm in or out when shims are changed.
Change shims at front bolt with projections on tool in slots in
pinion yoke, air bubble will show shimming requirements. Each
line on gless represents 1/16 inch shim. Add shims if bubble is
forward; take out if it is rearward. Do NOT remove belts when
changing shims; then tighten bolts to 35-40 foot-pounds.
Measuring Wheel Alignment
Line Pressure Regulator Adjustment
In making this adjustment, connect Air Ride Hose J-7413 to
valve outlet fitting that leads to front leveling valve. Maintain
pressure in system and check valve adjustment. Pressure should
be 125 p.s.i., plus or minus 5 p.s.i., except on series 75, which
should be 150 p.s.i., plus or minus 5 p.s.i.
Adjust valve setting by removing boot and turning regulator
screw clockwise to increase pressure, or counter-clockwise to
decrease pressure.
Caster
..is the fore-and-aft tilt of the spherical joint axis that gives a
trailing action to the front wheels.
Camber
..is the outward tilt of the front wheels at the top.
Swivel Angle
..is the inward tilt of the spherical joint axis that gives
directional stability to a car.
Toe-In
..is the arrangement of the steering linkage so that the front
Periodic Service Requirements
Every 25,000 miles, the lift valves should be removed and

partially disassembled so the filters can be cleaned and replaced.
The leveling valves should be removed, washed, and
disassembled for replacement of O-rings, screws and gaskets at
the same time.
The accumulator must be drained every 2,000 miles, or more
often in humid areas.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is simply a systematic method of approach aimed
at investigating all possible causes of trouble in order that proper
corrective measures can be taken.
Six-Step Diagnosis Procedure
1. Get the facts.
2. Weigh the facts.
3. Inspect and test
4. Decide on correction
5. Repair
6. Retest after correction
Diagnosis charts can be used to speed up step 3, but they
cannot take the place of product knowledge, common sense, or
logic.
Suspension System Conditions
Hard riding can be due to unlubricated or sticking front
suspension parts, over-inflated tires, or defective shock
absorbers. On air suspension cars, low air pressure, or low
standing height, due to leveling valve misadjustment, could be
the cause.
Rear springs bottoming could be due to worn suspension
parts, weak or sagging coil springs, or – on air suspension cars –
to low air pressure or low standing height, due to misadjusted
leveling valves.
Hard steering, though due to other causes, can be aggravated
by weak and sagging front springs, or by very low air pressure.
Car pulls to one side, or car wanders, can be due to a weak or
sagging front coil spring, or misadjusted or inoperative leveling
valves.
Car rolls excessively, on air suspension cars, can be due to a
sticking ball check in a leveling valve.
If an air suspension car stands uneven, or too high or too low,
the control links for the leveling valves probably require
readjustment.

Hi Dave:
Hope all is well.
You are correct with the count. 1 R Model Fleetwood Sedan. I
am waiting for the seats to be completed on my E Model Eldorado
Biarritz and then it will be all done. I have two S Models,
Limousines (Imperial Sedans). One is a parts car and one is the car
I got from Carlton Ham, which I started the restoration on but
stopped. I do have three Z model Commercial chassis, 2 hearses
and 1 flower car. The first hearse is a driver and is probably my
best starting and running car. I installed power seats and windows,
antenna and radio just to make it more like a Cadillac. It's a model
604 Superior ambulance/hearse. This car also is in the movie
called "Fur" with Nicole Kidman and Robert Downey Jr. and is
expected to be released July 17, 2006. It was filmed in Brooklyn
Navy yard last August and the car was sitting in front of a funeral
parlor.

Eldorado Fins Are Reportedly a Mistake
Member Leonard Johnson, the club expert on Eldorados, of the
Rocky Mountain Region CLC says, "Believe it or not, the smaller
'Eldo' fins on the 1957 and 1958 Cadillac Eldorados was actually a
mistake." He stated designers were initially intent on producing a
finless car.

As the story goes, members of the facilities security staff who
saw the clay model being reworked day in and day out, were
confounded by the finless design; especially since fins were all the
rage at the time.
Late one night, after lots of pizza and illicit drinking on the job,
one security guard took the leftovers of their thick crust Chicago
style pizza and created his own fins for the finless car.
The next morning, designers were so inspired by the simplistic
triangular shape of the food scraps they molded clay right around
the pieces of Italian pie. The result, the now classic 'Eldo' fin.

Hey members….
I don’t like to brag……..but I really want you all to
see a picture of my “Pride and Joy” … go to page 7
and down excessively when going over uneven roads. As a result,
the wheels are subjected to a variety of changes in the angles at
which they contact the road. In time, the tires may experience
undue wear on their outer edges by virtue of their improper relation
to the pavement. In some cases shocks may be so badly worn that
the tires leave the road altogether. When this happens, they will
scuff against the road as they remake contact. This can lead to
uneven tire wear, to the point where a tire may go out of round.
Shock absorber deterioration may be so gradual that a car owner
does not notice it.

Insurance Company Analyzes Crash Data
Sioux Falls, S.D., ranks as the safest city in the nation for drivers,
according to an insurance company study. The firm gave away gas to
motorists there Wednesday.
Fort Collins, Colo., places second in the study, based on an analysis of
damage claims filed in 2003 and 2004.
Cedar Rapids, Iowa, ranks third.
Phoenix ranks No. 1 for driving safety among cities with more than 1
million people.
Milwaukee is the safest among cities with populations between
500,000 and 1 million.
Newark, N.J., is the nation's riskiest city for drivers, the study found.
Another New Jersey city, Elizabeth, ranks the third most dangerous.
Washington, D.C., is the second-riskiest city. Two nearby

GOT STUCK, HUH?
A truck driver was driving along on the freeway. A sign comes up
that reads, "Low Bridge Ahead." Before he knows it, the bridge is
right ahead of him and he gets stuck under the bridge. Cars are
backed up for miles. Finally, a police car comes up. The cop gets
out of his car and walks to the truck driver, puts his hands on his
hips and says, "Got stuck, huh?" The truck driver says, "No, I was
delivering this bridge and ran out of gas.

This car was up for auction on Ebay around the end of May with the
following description:
I bought this car a few years ago from a couple whose father
passed away. The car was customized by some local farmers. The
car has the original motor, transmission, etc, and runs strong. The
customized features of this car include the shortened body and
permanent convertible. Doors do not open, and there are no side
windows. Custom upholstery was installed last summer. New tires,
wheels, shocks, and engine tune up parts. Gas tank was recently resealed. The car runs and drives good. When you apply the brakes,
it pulls to the left, but I have had in on the highway with success.
Car has been stored inside most of its life. Flaws: Dent in drivers
side rear chrome, top of dash pad; front driver’s side parking lens
is cracked. Minor rust. Radio and vacuum for windshield wipers
non functioning. Water pumps bearing starting to make some
noise. This is a great parade car. Our family has had a lot of fun
with it.

Hi Dave
Just back from a tip to Northern Ireland to bring the old Cadillac to
Malta. We flew to Ireland and drove the car back to Malta. It took 10 days
but we enjoyed the trip.
We drove from Coleraine,
North Ireland to Rosslare,
South Ireland. Then on the
ferry to Pembroke,
England. We then drove
Show and tell at cousin Rose’s school
We took pictures of the signs arriving at Barcelona, Rome etc but --Eleanor was in charge of pictures and failed to notice that the memory was
full!

England. Then on the ferry
from Plymouth to Santander,
Spain. Then driving again
Santander to Barcelona. Ferry
- Barcelona to Rome. Then

used a lot of fuel (average
price of US$ 1.50 per liter)
but other than that it ran
really well (70 - 75 mph) and
I enjoyed driving it. Only

THE OIL CHANGE
Women:
1. Pull up to Jiffy Lube when the mileage reaches 3000 since the last oil
change.
2. Drink a cup of coffee.
3. 15 minutes later, write a check and leave with a properly maintained
vehicle.
Men:
1. Go to O'Reilly auto parts and write a check for 50 dollars for oil, filter,
oil lift (AKA kitty litter), hand cleaner and scented tree.
2. Discover that the used oil container is full. Instead of taking back to
O'Reilly to recycle, dump in hole in back yard.
3. Open a beer and drink it.
4. Jack car up. Spend 30 minutes looking for jack stands.
5. Find jack stands under kid's pedal car.
6. In frustration, open another beer and drink it.
7. Place drain pan under engine.
8. Look for 9/16 box end wrench.
9. Give up and use crescent wrench.
10. Unscrew drain plug.
11. Drop drain plug in pan of hot oil; get hot oil on you in
process.
12. Clean up.
13. Have another beer while oil is draining.
14. Look for oil filter wrench.
15. Give up; poke oil filter with Phillips screwdriver and twist it off.
16. Beer.
17. Buddy shows up; finish case with him. Finish oil change tomorrow.
18. Next day, drag pan full of old oil out from underneath car.
19. Throw oil lift (AKA kitty litter) on oil spilled during step
20. Beer. No, drank it all yesterday.
21. Walk to 7-11; buy beer.
22. Install new oil filter making sure to apply thin coat of clean oil to
gasket first.
23. Dump first quart of fresh oil into engine.
24. Remember drain plug from step 11.
25. Hurry to find drain plug in drain pan.
26. Hurry to replace drain plug before the whole quart of fresh oil drains
onto floor.
27. Slip with wrench and bang knuckles on frame.
28. Bang head on floorboard in reaction.
29. Begin cussing fit.
30. Throw wrench.
31. Cuss for additional 10 minutes because wrench hit Miss December
(1992) in the left boob.
32. Clean up; apply Band-Aid to knuckle.
33. Beer.
34. Beer.
35. Dump in additional 4 quarts of oil.
36. Beer.
37. Lower car from jack stands
38. Accidentally crush one of the jack stands
39. Move car back to apply more oil lift (AKA kitty litter) to fresh oil
spilled during step 23.
40. Drive car.
