NEW YORK — Skin-hugging mini-dresses in all colours of the rainbow kicked off New York's
spring-summer Fashion Week on Thursday as designers went for optimism to shrug off the
economic crisis.
Though the most-awaited shows take place only on Saturday, the usual crowd of customers,
press, buyers and sponsors were on hand hours early in the tents set up in Bryant Park in
midtown Manhattan.
Opening the shows was New York's own Michael Angel, who sent out a collection of waistlined
mini-dresses with no sleeves, but with epaulettes.
France's New-York based BCBG Max Azria brand followed with a line of also tiny close-fitting
dresses cut in a patchwork of fabrics, multicoloured in part, plain in others.
Colour was taste of the day, and in a poll released in the influential Women's Wear Daily
newspaper, designers picked their five favourite colours as violet, yellow, turquoise, coral and
red.
Bottom of the barrel were beige, olive green and petrol blue.
The mood for a happy fashion style emerged also in the collections shown by young generation
designers Mara Hoffman, Nicholas K and Whitney Eve.
Nicholas K's sunny pleated dresses in rainbow colours came with either light hooded jackets or
pale sleeveless riding-jackets thrown over for warmth. For men he offered linen jackets,
chequered in grey, orange and beige.
Very young Whitney Eve went for slinky lame sheath-dresses worn under short jackets with
beefy shoulder-pads. Beachwear included a sleeveless shirt over a satin short in bright green,
orange or violet.
With men winning increasing attention, two upcoming star designers Philip Lim and Alexander
Wang plan separate menswear shows during the New York event.
Nocturnal fashionista meanwhile were offered a Fashion's Night Out fete by Mayor Michael
Bloomberg and celebrities, including the head of the designers' association Diane von
Furstenberg, with hundreds of stores remaining open until the wee hours in the hopes of
encouraging a New York shopping spree.
The fashion industry provides work for 175,000 New Yorkers with a yearly turnover estimated at
10 billion dollars in direct and indirect revenue, according to the industry.
A black-and-white T-shirt with a stylised urban scene was being offered at 30 dollars, with 40
percent of the takings due to go to a fund for the September 11 Memorial where the World Trade
Center stood.
Among the dozens of designers due on the catwalks until September 17 are Ralph Lauren, Donna
Karan, Catherine Malandrino, Marc Jacobs, Georges Chakra, Narciso Rodriguez and Calvin
Klein.
New York's Fashion Week is the first of the world's four leading fashion events of the season
before the shows in Milan, London and Paris.

mara‐hoffman/ At this point I don’t even want to know how many hours I’ve been awake. Left Honolulu at 4
p.m. Wednesday and got in at 10 a.m. New York time, but really 4 a.m. Hawaii time, with only
about 2 hours of sleep. Figure I’ve been up 46 hours now, and it’s not pretty. I don’t know why I
thought it made sense to arrive day of.
On top of all my woes, I decided to pick up the iPhone 2 days ahead of departure when T-Mobile
wouldn’t let me extend my contract (two months to expiration) to pick up the G1 phone at the
discounted price for newbies. (Isn’t that just plain wrong when they treat newbies better than
current loyal clients who have been with them for at least six years? So much for their so-called
“mobile makeover” initiative. Plus, locking people into two-year contracts is also wrong. It
might have been OK two years ago, but technology evolves so fast now, it’s a lifetime. Phone
companies better watch it. First they lost the lock on phone numbers and the two-year contract is
going to be the next battle.)
Anyway, I had put my entire schedule into the iPhone, only to find it updated all the times to fit
New York time, so fashion shows at 9 a.m. were moved to 3 p.m., 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., etc. Some
had moved to the next day. Had to fix all the times, adding to my aggravations.
Well, you always know you’re getting close to the tents when you see a guy in his underwear
and plastic jacket. That would be a model for the Israeli clothing company Bagir, graphically
conveying its eco philosophy and Eco-Gir, a suit made from 30 PET recycled plastic bottles.
(The real suit would look like fabric.)
I was first lured to the Nicholas K, and Mara Hoffman show because it promised to make life
easy for editors with its three-in-one format. It’s a great way for designers to pool resources as
well.
But it’s been two years since my last fashion week and I was worried that having three designers
would present delays and anxious about the 2 p.m. show’s late start because I also had to make it
to the Ports 1961 show on the other side of the tent at 3 p.m.
I had put the timing question to Twitter, and those who responded suggested it wasn’t a good
idea to accept back-to-back invitations because shows often start late. That didn’t make sense to
me. It might be true for Marc Jacobs and others showing outside the tents, but inside the tents,
there’s a tight schedule and designers have to follow it or risk botching it for the next designer.
So I booked as many as I could, except when there was a direct conflict, in which case the
company that sent its invite the earliest won.
I took my seat, but figured that once the show started, they wouldn’t want anyone crossing in
front of their cameras, so I decided to stand near the entrance so I could run if I had to. By 2:45
p.m. I was really, really anxious, so left after seeing the Nicholas K show of men’s and women’s
sportswear. I really wanted to see what kind of dresses Mara Hoffman would come up with next,
but I didn’t want to risk losing my seat at Ports and becoming an SRO. So, after one long wait in
line, I was back in another line. And, after about 10 minutes in my seat, people from the other
show started trickling in.
All was not lost. The shows are captured on video that loops on screens in the lobby area so I
could watch what I missed. As I expected, Mara Hoffman’s floor-length and short dresses were
beautiful, appearing to be as light as a feather and full of soft, feminine, billowy movement. Any
woman wearing one of her creations, in colorful geometric prints, would turn heads, whether at a
spring garden party or evening event.
Whiney Eve showed very girly dresses with a lot of sheer laces and silver metallics. She also
showed some prints that remind me of some vintage kimono prints, with their mix of purple,
orange, green and white. It’s a very Asian-inspired palette.
If I had to decide on the trends for spring 2010 after Day 1, I would say there’s an Asian
influence, and also heavy white and jeweled metallic look, both echoed on the Ports runway. I
imagine people will still be feeling poor six months from now, but they’ll want to feel rich and
wear things that will perk up their spirits. I think that is what designers will be giving us in the
days ahead.

missed out on all the fun, here’s a recap:
Michael Angel - One of the first shows of NY
Fashion Week and a definite eye-opener. But
nobody expected anything less from the Aussie
designer who was inspired by the great Christian
Dior. Puff sleeves, peplum jackets, with futuristic-like
details and digita prints overflowed this runway
show.
BCBGMAZAZRIA - Colorful, vibrant and full of
sexy designs with super feminine details.
Everything you love about Max Azria’s Herve Leger
line was incorporated in the BCBG way with the
result of a covetable collection.
Elie Tahari - This safari themed collection included
everything safari-like without the trendy animal
prints. Lightweight anoraks, linen blazers, and
versatile day-to-evening pieces made this collection
one to remember b
when Spring comes along.
Ports 1961 - If Japan’s on your top places to visit,
then you’ll definitely like what we saw in the Ports
1961 collection. From origami and kimono design
motifs, to romantic color palettes and asymmetric
pieces, this collection was absolutely gorgeous.
Monique Lhuillier - Known for her fabulous
cocktail dresses, Monique Lhuillier’s Spring 2010
collection was witty and sexy. It was a collection
filled with Grecian draping elements inspired by an
Africa color palette of blacks, golds, and blues.
Whitney Eve - Whitney Port’s runway debut included RTW pieces for everyone. The color theme and
designs were simply beautiful.

Makeup artist Tina Turnbow used Nyx Professional Makeup
backstage at the Whitney Eve (yes, designed by Whitney Port, LOL) show yesterday. Turnbow
gave models a playful, “Alice in Wonderland”-inspired look for the runway.
Here’s how you can get the look at home:
Doll Play: Big lashes are the look for Spring. Tina used
Nyx Professional Makeup’s Doll Eye Mascara in Volume
to create, big open eyes. For extra definition, the model’s
eyes were lined with Nyx Professional Makeup’s Felt
Tip Eyeliner in Black, with a sexy cat-eye swoop.
Candy-Colored Eyes: For eyes that popped on the runway,

Nicholas K, Whitney Eve, and Mara Hoffman shared a time slot at Mercedes-Benz Fashion
Week in New York City. It was a long line before the show, but after I was seated and realized I
would be treated to three designers, I was so excited!
First up was Nicholas K. There was clearly some 80s influence going on with pieces in bright
blue and shocking pink! Not that we don’t love the 80s. The word of the day was definitely
color. With great prints, color blocks, madras plaid, the colors I noted were blue, black, red,
green, taupe, gray, yellow… need I go on? It was fun and funky, with some pieces featured cutouts, lots of draping and gathers, baggy pants, pleated pencil skirts, and cardigans. The men’s
collection was just as fun and very 80s preppy. And get this – the female models all wore flats
on the runway!

Whitney Eve made its debut next. It’s the first line by Whitney Port, who was part of the cast of
The Hills before landing her own show, The City. I went into Whitney’s show completely
objectively. Get this – I am the last person alive who has seen neither of these shows. I can hear
all of your collective gasps…. Whitney Eve is a fun collection, featuring items that are very
wearable. The collection featured a lot of metallic fabrics, which are hot this fall and look like
they’ll be here to stay in spring, just in lighter shades and fabrics. There were also plenty of
more airy fabrics, lots of draping (hot on so many runways right now), and extra and details
such as cutouts, slits, and ruffles. One dress featured an exposed zipper on the front that
definitely reminded me of the 80s. Fans will NOT be disappointed, I am sure.

Mara Hoffman may have been my favorite of the set. Perhaps this is because I love prints, and
there was definitely a wide variety of prints on the runway for this show! Some of the prints
were very geometric, while others seem more ethnic-inspired. The most beautiful thing about
this collection was in the details. Like other collections, there was some fabric draping and
defined waistlines, but she also draws attention to the back – a nice back is a much overlooked
asset! There was a lot of braided fabric details and some intricate fabric nets on the backs of tops
and dresses. Dear Mara, where do I order? I loved it all!

We sat down last night with TRESemmé stylist Jeanie Syfu (whom, if you recall, we also chatted with about The Fashion Show) to learn about the perky‐and‐pretty ponytails at Whitney Port’s show, Whitney Eve.
The ponytail look (shown at left) from the Whitney Eve show was meant to match the girly aesthetic of of the clothes. To give the top of the hair a little height, Jeanie and her fellow TRESemmé stylists used a round brush and TRESemmé’s 24 Hour Body Root Boost volumizing spray. The stylists then worked on the ponytail itself, using an inch curling iron and roughing up the texture a little with their hands to get the loose, undone curls that kept the look more casual. Anti‐frizz cream finished off the super‐sweet look. As always, Jeanie was full of useful tips for us on all manner of hairstyles and products! What looks are going to be big for this spring? I like the idea of something casual and undone, because I always feel like when things are too neat, they just look too hard. [Whitney’s] collection is really feminine, so we kept in that soft element. So if the look from Whitney Eve is for a girly‐girl, what do you think a rocker chick would be styling for spring? Again, we’re seeing a lot of really casual looks. We don’t anything to look too styled. Even if the girl had a crazy undercut, all of her hair gone on one side—it’s all about how you’re finishing the look. Not so overworked, piece‐y, bed head—that kind of texture is really in. So if it’s not going to be up in a bun and undone, it’s going to be down and loose and undone. What product can you not live without? Probably the TRESemmé Heat Tamer Spray. It’s really great for restyling your hair, and it’ll also protect from any kind of thermal styling. I like to use it for anything—it adds a lot of texture, especially if you layer it with other products. Even on second day hair, I’ll kind of re‐wet my hair with the spray and blow dry on top of that. It doesn’t have any hold to it, but it’s a good foundation. New Yorkers celebration last night (September 16).
The “City” cutie looked lovely as she arrived at Avenue, sporting a halter-style graphite-colored
minidress teamed with a pair of black ankle boot heels.
In related news, Whitney recently debuted her new Whitney Eve collection at the Bryant Park
tents of Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week.
Port told press, “I really wanted to bring a level of sophistication along with a fun, cocktail sexy
vibe.” Following the show, Whitney partied in SoHo to celebrate her big day.

For her Spring/Summer 2010 Whitney Eve collection, Whitney
Port seemed to use herself as a muse. Every single looked
screamed "Whitney" and for someone like me who adores
Whitney's style, that's definitely a good thing! This collection
merged a downtown New York edge with a sweet and sunny
California girl sensibility. Just like Whitney, it was very eclectic,
funky, and had a retro reference point which was re-interpreted to
create a modern feel. I absolutely died over this one slinky,
metallic number! Other standouts included a cut-out brocade mini
dress with a bow accent (such a great way to balance naughty
and nice!) and a strapless full-skirted black dress with layers of
tulle peeping through. Almost every style was adorned with ultra
femme accents -- ruffles, bows, tulle, lace -- but the sweetness
was definitely offset by sexy silhouettes and styles. Whitney also
presented some fabulous separates, including a sharpshouldered peplum jacket, a black blazer updated with layered of
ruffles, and an oversized metallic blazer. Overall, anyone who
loves Whitney's style will absolutely flip over all the pieces in her
Whitney Eve line -- check the slideshow to see for yourself!
