Christmas Greetings to parents, pupils and staff
The start of the Christmas holidays signal the end of a very busy
term. The events highlighted in this issue of the High School Herald
are a sample of the activities that we, as a community, have
celebrated together.
I wish you and your families a very Merry Christmas
and a safe and peaceful New Year.

Year 11 RiFTT Trip to Cambridge
On Saturday 16th October, some
members of The RiFTT (Reaching for The
Top) society in Year 11 travelled with Mr
Gale to Cambridge for a “multi-purpose”
visit. Firstly they looked around Queens’
and King’s Colleges to learn about what
function colleges have within a collegiate
university. They also went to look at
some of the main faculty buildings where
lectures are held and libraries are found
for different subjects. In particular, they
had a guided tour of The Law Faculty and
had a chance meeting with “The Master
of Moots” who was preparing to host the
annual mooting competition where debates on points of law are made by undergraduate students.
There was also a visit to The University Library where they got to look at Siegried Sassoon’s original
notebooks, letters and diaries. Finally, there was time to explore Cambridge and purchase books to
extend their GCSE studies which will be then collected together to form the entirely studentchosen RiFTT Library which will hopefully continue to grow year on year. It was certainly a full and
successful day and such trips will be a regular event in the RiFTT calendar.
This year for Alltech Science Competition, students had to write an essay and then those shortlisted gave a presentation. The winner receives a prize of £250 and a week’s work experience in
Alltech’s research centre in Ireland, the runner up £100 and the remaining finalists prizes of £50
each. The judges who are Dr Richard Murphy, Head of Research at Alltech, and Dr John Leake, Fellow
of St John’s College, Cambridge, selected the following as finalists: Chloe Cope, Richard Li, Michael
Paterson, Seb Teasdale-Brown, Ellie Tew and Robin Virgo. Michael Paterson won the first prize with
his essay on ‘Influencing stem cell differentiation’ and Ellie Tew came second with her essay on
‘Genetically modified crops’. Congratulations to both of
them and all who took part.

SES Fencers
SPORTING SUCCESS
Maddy Young, Y8 competed in the East Region out of
age Championships in Ipswich and achieved overall
Gold, becoming Regional Champion. This was Maddy’s
first ever medal at a regional competition after winning
her first overall Gold at the Cambridgeshire County
Championships in September.
Lucy Barber, Y11 was selected into the squad for the
English National Trampolining Championships in
Gloucester and is now going on to the Nationals!
Phoebe Archer, Y9 was successfully accepted into the
county netball academy in the U14 age group.
Isabelle Chandler, Tori Martin and Honor Munro-Hall
were not successful this time but seem motivated to go
and join clubs and enhance their chances next year.
Badminton team are still beating the opposition such
as Uppingham and Oakham with respectable scores!

Competition this term.

At the Poppy Appeal Dinner Dance in Stibbington for Remembrance Weekend , Mrs Baines & Mrs Dalgliesh contacted the school to say that their daughters, Chloe Baines and Jessica Dalgliesh, along with Ross Cutteridge, Charlie
Kay, James Hounslow, Rebecca Pallister, Jess Gulland, Georgie Fenn and Alice Reid were a fantastic help…….they
arrived early to help set up and decorate the venue and be briefed on what we were doing and what was needed
from them. During the evening they encouraged people to dance and looked and behaved impeccably. They were
a credit to the school and took on board the true meaning of what the Royal British Legion stands for. Thanks have
gone from Mrs Powell to these students.
ROTARY CLUB YOUNG CHEF COMPETITION
The Home Economics Department hosted the annual Rotary Club Junior Chef competition on the evening of 23 rd
November 2010. The task was to plan, prepare,
cook and serve a healthy two course meal for two
people using as many local and seasonal ingredients
as possible, for under £10. There were 7 entrants
from the local area including 4 girls from SHS and 3
from QE. The girls were Charlie Cozens Y10, Katie
Lancaster Y11, Molly Warren Y11 and Zoe Rawnsley
Y12. They had 30 minutes preparation time and 1
½ hours of cooking before the judging. The judge
(head chef of The Barn) tasted all the food and gave
feedback to the contestants who had worked incredibly hard in time pressured conditions. SHS
scooped two of the prizes. Molly Warren came 3rd
and Katie Lancaster came first and will compete
in the district semi finals in January. We wish her
the best of luck.”
I would be grateful if you could let me know of any girls’ achievements out of school as we are always keen to recognise
and celebrate these.
Charities
SES 6TH FORM BOARDERS FORMAL DINNER

 Staff members, Dominique Evans, Catherine
Vie and Lorna Holden have raised over £900
for Cancer Research by taking part in the half
marathon in Peterborough.
The SES Boarders formal dinner took place on 1 December and the
weather conditions added an icy touch to this year’s Christmas
theme. The tables were beautifully decorated and the food was
splendid. Guests were entertained with excellent speeches from SES

Stibbington where they helped with the organisation and during the evening itself which
was much appreciated.

continue to raise money for our three selected charities this year. The three charities this

I am delighted to announce that Kirsty
Moore , nee Stewart (SHS 1995), the first
female Red Arrows pilot will be coming back
to SES on Monday 7th February 2011 to deliver a Foundation lecture.
The lecture will take place from 6pm to 7pm
(45 minute lecture, 15 minute Q&A) in the
Stamford School Hall. The target audience
will be all SES pupils, staff and parents.

drivers who have to drive round them or girls crossing the road. The dark , early evenings make this practice a danger for pedestrians young & old.
The Welland Boarders did not miss out either with their Christmas
Feast the following night after which they enjoyed games and fun
back at the House.
The campaign for a crossing has been going on for several years now. The
crossing is still in line for traffic calming measures which was supposed to be
this year. We have been asked to keep a record of any dangerous driving
around the crossing which could enhance our application so you may see your
car being photographed if you are dropping off illegally or driving in a manner that could be construed as dangerous. An article in the Mercury (3/12) confirmed that LCC had made the road narrowing & pedestrian crossing on
High Street, St Martin’s a ‘high priority scheme’.
The more people that write to the Highways Department campaigning for safer roads outside school, the better.

Cavell House won the annual House
Singing Competition which, this year, was
judged by David Lovell-Brown.
Two of our sailing team, Hannah Rigby (Y11 SHS) and
Luke Higgins (Y12 SS) have been
selected for a regional squad to do team racing in Firefly
dinghies. Members of the team will compete in the Regional team racing championships leading up to the UK
