Erik Fischer
Hanover
Erik Fischer, 21, is from Hanover. He’s an engineering
draughtsman in the design department of a company called Prezisa. It makes laboratory
instruments. At the moment, though, Erik isn’t
working in Hanover. Prezisa has a London sales office
and he’s spending six months there. Here’s Erik
writing about his stay in London on his internet blog …

Could this be YOU one day?

Going to work London style: the ‘Tube’
Here’s my second post from London – in English this time!
Well, I’ve been here for four months now and everything
is still great. The guys in the London office are just so friendly.
In my department – the sales department – we all use first
names. Even the department boss is ‘Jenna’. It’s very different
from Germany where everyone is ‘Herr’ and ‘Frau’.
The work is very interesting. I’m speaking to customers on the
phone and writing letters and emails. All in English, of course.
I used English in Germany, but now I’m using it all day, every
day, I feel a lot more confident.
London is just a great place to be. The city is so multicultural.
I travel to work every day on the underground – the ‘Tube’.
I can’t believe how many different nationalities (and languages)
I see and hear. And then there are all those famous buildings
that I see every day. Sometimes I say to myself: ‘Hey, Erik! Look,
there are the Houses of Parliament. You’re in London, man!’
I’m learning so much here. Living and working in England – or
any other country – is a fantastic experience. I’d say this: if you
have the chance one day, JUST DO IT!

D | EU topics
Topic 1: The European Union
1
Read this British magazine article.
R
A 1.2
With the European Union now 50+ years old, journalist Karen Markovic explains why she is a big fan.
My top 10 reasons to love the EU
5
10
15
OK, there are times when we all hate the European Union. It can be bureaucratic.
It can produce some stupid policies. And perhaps deep down we all worry that
politicians in Brussels can make decisions about our lives in the UK, Germany,
Slovenia or wherever. But for me, the good things about the EU far outweigh
the bad. Here’s my list of the top ten reasons why we should all be glad it exists.
1. No more wars
England, France and Germany still fight about
EU policies, but the idea of a war in Europe is
now unthinkable. It’s easy to forget that this
wasn’t true before the EU was formed. Europe
was at war constantly for hundreds of years.
2. Democracy in 28 countries
Spain, Portugal, Greece and the EU’s eleven
ex-com
munist countries are all now
democracies. None of them was really free
50 years ago.
40
45
50
20
25
30
35
3. A better life in poorer countries
Countries like Ireland and Portugal that were
once very poor now have a much better
standard of living. In fact, because of the EU,
the average Irish person is now better off than
the average British person.
4. The world’s largest trading market
There are 500 million people in the EU, 300
million in the USA. The EU is the world’s
biggest trading bloc. European consumers
can buy goods from any European country
without paying import taxes. That has brought
prices down and improved quality. And for
the past several years the European economy
has been stronger than the USA’s.
5. Working and studying in Europe
People from all European countries have the
right to work and to study in other European
countries. There are a number of programmes
to help young people today to be mobile, and
they have better chances than ever before to
be true ‘Europeans’.
55
6. A better quality
of life
EU laws about everything from longer paid
holidays for workers to better food labelling
mean that everyday life in Europe is better
than ever before.
7. Helping the planet
The EU is the world leader in helping the
environment with cuts in CO² emissions. The
EU’s strong position on the environment is
forcing other countries around the world to
follow.
8. Meeting other people
It’s easy to travel around Europe, and more
and more people do so. We meet people from
different countries, eat their food, and
generally understand them a lot better. We
also learn what other cultures consider to be
polite. And we’re learning more languages.
Over 50% of Europeans now say that they can
speak a second European language.
60
9. One currency (mostly)
You can now travel through 18 countries and
use one currency (Britain, of course, is not
one of them!). The euro is now the only real
alternative to the dollar in global business.
65
10. A strong voice in the world
My most important reason to be in favour of
the EU is this last one: the countries of Europe
have together a strong voice in the world.
Beside the USA, China and Russia, our
opinions matter, and we’re strong enough to
make sure that people listen to us.

4.People in the EU’s poorer countries have more money now

5. The EU is a bigger market than the USA.
6. It’s harder to travel or study in Europe now.
7.The EU’s laws about paid holidays are a good thing.
8.Other countries think more about the environment than
Europe.
9.More than half the people in Europe speak their own

SKILLS – Reading a text
• Look at the whole text (headlines,
pictures etc.) first. Try to get a very
general idea of its theme.
• Read twice. Texts always look hard
at first but they’re easier when
you read them again.
• Try to understand the text
globally. Don’t look up words
straight away in a dictionary!
Work out/guess words you don’t
know from the context.

clear about at the end, then use
your dictionary.

London, Erik Fischer met Ceren Göktürk.
She’s an apprentice in Germany but she
did a work placement in London. When
the two came back to Germany, they
made a podcast together about their
experiences there.

the end of his course at a technical vocational

What is the subject of the conversation?
A 1.4
Felipe:What are you planning to do when this course is finished? I’ll try to find a job
here, as there’s not much being offered at home lately.
Thorsten:Well, I found an advertisement for a 12-week work placement in England. It’s
an international company that deals in IT solutions for heat pump technology.
I don’t know anything about heat pumps, but I am good IT. The company even
offers help with finding accommodation for the length of the placement. They
have an office in Crawley, which is not far from Gatwick.
Felipe:That sounds promising! And your English is better than mine, so I guess you’ll
have no trouble fitting in there. What do you need to do now?
Thorsten:I have to write a letter of application and include my CV. It’s an unpaid
placement, but I wouldn’t earn anything anyway if I spent the three months
here at home.
Felipe:It will help that you already worked for a company before taking this course.
Maybe they can give you a letter of recommendation.
Thorsten:Good idea! I’m sure they will, and it might help to get the placement.
Felipe:
Good luck!

1.What is the business of the company Thorsten wants to apply to and where is it

I have read the website praktikumsbörse.de and would like to apply for a
three-month placement in the IT sector. I am currently doing a one-year course
at a technical vocational college. After finishing this course in June next
year I will obtain the Entrance Certificate for Universities of Applied Sciences.
I would be available for the placement from July 1 until September 30.
As you will see from my CV, I have previous work experience as an IT
specialist; I did a three-year apprenticeship at a local IT company before
I entered the course at the technical vocational college, so I have advanced
computer skills in systems integration and application development.
I also have a good knowledge of English, both written and spoken.
The company I worked for during the past three years has international
customers, so I was exposed to the language fairly often.
I would very much welcome the opportunity to work for an international
company in the UK. I believe that I would be an enthusiastic and hardworking employee. My objectives are not only to learn the language better
but also to gather experience in communicating with colleagues and
customers in a new environment. The placement will also serve as a good
preparation for my studies at a University of Applied Sciences, where
English will be absolutely necessary, since much of the scientific literature
will be in English.
My previous employers found me reliable and keen to learn. I have a wide
range of interests including sports (I am a football referee) and digital
photography.

Read the information in the box below and write a similar CV using your
own or fictitious data.
Curriculum vitae (CV) or résumé
When you apply for a job, you have to include a CV with your personal history,
education and work experience. A curriculum vitae / CV is the term used in
Britain; in the US it is called a résumé.
• Handwritten and typed CVs are no
longer acceptable. Use a word
processor and print out a fresh
copy of your CV after comparing it
with the job specifications in the
advertisement.
• Your CV should not be longer than
1–2 separate A4 pages. One page
is best, but you should not leave
out important information just to
keep it to one page.
• Use good-quality paper.
• Use Times New Roman or Georgia
in font size 11 or 12.
• Point out your own strengths and
achievements.
• Include a photo if requested.
• Include written references if
requested.
• Start with your most recent
school / job when describing your
education / work experience.
Example:
Name. . . . . . . . . . . . Address. . . . . . . . . . . Place of birth . . . . . . . Nationality. . . . . . . . . Date of birth . . . . . . . .
Education . . . . . . . . . .
Languages. . . . . . . . . Previous experience . . . Interests . . . . . . . . . . Additional information. . • Always send a covering letter,
including your address and the
date, along with your CV.
• Check spelling and grammar.
• Be honest and accurate.
• Don’t include your present salary,
unless requested.
• Don’t ask the company to send
back your CV, as most companies
will want to keep it on file.
• If you post the letter of application
and CV, use an A4 envelope so that
they do not need to be folded.
• If you send the letter by email,
send the CV as an attachment.
• Keep a copy of the CV you send
with your application. If you are
asked for an interview, you should
look at it beforehand as it will
probably be the basis for the
questions you are asked.
