07. Section 300
SECTION 300
Section 300 Content Consideration
This section contains examples of nearly every type of antenna and transducer used in not only the EMC arena but
also other disciplines. When choosing your antenna be aware that they need to be supported by some form of mount
which can be found in section 800. Even if you have your own mounts do check that the coupling interface is
compatible. This can also mean checking to make sure that your antenna can be swung through ninety degrees for a
polarisation change without the elements striking some part of the mount. Having decided on whether you require an
antenna to just receive or transmit or do both, then read the full description and specification of that antenna on our
web site or in the main catalogue/CD. In the description of each antenna we describe the type of mount interface. If
you have no (or unreliable) coaxial cables, we provide a comprehensive list of varying lengths & appropriate types &
adaptors in Section 700. Most are supplied with calibration data for insertion loss. Generally, the end user need only
be concerned about loss when working above 30MHz as a rule.
Section 300 is broken down into five subsections. The first of these is Low Frequency Magnetic Field covering from
DC up to 30MHz. Many of the devices in this sub section will have the capability of handling a certain amount of
injected power and then radiate mainly for immunity and shielding effectiveness testing. These types are likely to
have an impedance matching switch to reduce the mismatch from the 50ȍ o/p Z of the power amplifier to the very
low i/p Z of the loop. All loop antennas are clearly described as to whether they can be used to transmit or not. Of the
receiving group you have the choice between active and passive loops. Be aware of the orientation of the loop to give
a maximum. Although all magnetic readings are read as a voltage across the 50ȍ i/p of a receiver, the antenna factor
will convert this to amps per metre. Generally, all loops are shielded against the electric component by enclosing the
conducting loop within an all-metal shield. This ensures that it is just the magnetic component of the radiated energy
that is responsible for producing an output voltage. Due to the relatively long wavelengths in this band, and hence
your distance from the source, the 377 Ohm relationship to the “E” field will not hold true and you may have to
measure the “E” field separately with a high impedance rod. However, the magnetic component of an EM field is a
fairly steady component to work with being somewhat unaffected by moving conducting (non ferrous) bodies in the
vicinity. In both the LF magnetic as well as the electric group, sets of transmit & receive antennas can be hired as a
single item.
The Low frequency Electric Field similarly covers the range DC to 30MHz. The DC coverage is provided by the 2ft
Crawford Cell which has a useful range up to 300MHz, otherwise most devices are in the form of 41 inch whip rods
and parallel elements. Again, decide if you are going to transmit or receive. If receiving, decide on whether the
antenna is to be active which has the effect of reducing the antenna loss factor to a few dBs or whether it is necessary
to have straight coupling via a matching balun. Be aware of the overload problem of active antennas and some baluns.
Very few of the antennas will have a full bandwidth from 10kHz through to 30MHz, generally they are switched at
about 5MHz. This unfortunately prevents an automatic program making a full uninterrupted sweep as the antenna
would have to be switched mid-way. If a series of readings are being taken over different terrains or locations then use
a ground-plane (counterpoise). This can be attached to the base of the rod. The RVR-25A/30 series were designed for
the EMC-30 receiver and have a coupling cable to the receiver which switches the matching baluns by octaves.
However, they can still be used independently and switched manually to cover the ten octave bands. There is no
polarisation change to make with 41 inch rod antennas, they are all operated in the vertical position.
The HF-VHF sub-section deals basically with biconicals but also embraces the combination of Biconicals & Log
Periodics known as “Bilogs”. The frequency embraces 26MHz-3GHz. Be aware of power handling capabilities and
mounting fixtures. Although all devices in this range are passive some are specifically for transmitting & others for
receiving. Included in this group and the microwave group are sets of two antennas of the same type which can be
hired under a single item number making it more economical. Generally, all the antenna factors supplied in the
handbooks are for a 3 metres range over a conducting ground plane. Some of the “bilogs” have a set of 3 metre free
space figures for FAR’s. See individual specifications for more details. All the bicons come with collapsible elements
which assist in packaging and shipping. A similar sub-section VHF-UHF contains mostly dipole sets covering up
1GHz.
Finally, the UHF-Microwave sub-section. This embraces frequencies from 200MHz upwards, the section houses all
the Log Periodics, Double Ridge Guide and horn antennas. When selecting microwave antennas you may well need to
hire the appropriate length of microwave cable otherwise losses will be considerable. A selection of microwave
adaptors are also available (Section 700). In previous years we offered a group of “Site Attenuation” antennas with the
appropriate calibration data. This has unfortunately been withdrawn as we could no longer rely on the maintenance of
the UKAS calibration after unverifiable usage & carriage. However, under section 900 we now offer this service using
the RSM procedure involving scanning the NPL groundplane and transferring this to your site for comparison.
Included with this section is an “E” Field “sniffer” with a range from 10kHz to 1GHz. This is used for finding leaks
around shielded doors & I/O panels.

ALP-10/11 Receiving Loop - 20Hz-50kHz.
This loop antenna is used to obtain magnetic field measurements from
20Hz-50kHz. It has a balanced Faraday shield that reduces its response to
electric fields to a minimum thus enabling only the magnetic component
of a composite field to be measured. The loop should be connected into
50ohm measuring instruments such as the EMC-11/R&S-ESS Series
interference receivers (Items 104/121). The loop is not for transmitting
This item can be either mounted on a tripod (Section 800) via a threaded

EMCO 6505 - Antenna Set of Tx/Rx Loops 10kHz-30MHz
This set comprises the EMCO model 6509 Tx loop & The ALR30M (item 308) a ten band receiving loop. Originally the above
named set consisted of the EMCO 6509 (Item 306) transmitting
loop and the EMCO model 6507 (Item 305) broadband active
receiving loop. However, in many cases an inactive loop is
preferred as it reduces danger of compression or overload. These
antennae are used for MIL-STD 285 or IEEE-299 Shielding
Effectiveness. For individual data see (Items 305/306/308)
.Picture shows Tx loop with item 308 (in blue).
Don’t forget that a remote status monitor is available (Item 305A)
for the active loop (if preferred) if you are testing remotely and
fear overload.

See Items 305 & 306 / 308 for specification. The above antennae
are provided in one single case dimensions :64cm x 50cm x 30cm.
ITEM 308
EM ALR-25/30 - Switchable Passive Loop 10kHz-30MHz - Rx only
Originally configured for MIL-STD testing. The ALR30 remote loop
antenna transforms magnetic field components by ten passive matching
circuits from 9kHz-30MHz and has been designed for use with the
Electro-Metrics EMC-30 GPIB controlled receiver and other 50ȍ input
systems. It covers the same octave ranges as the ten matching bands of
the EMC30 Rx. The matching network switches automatically via TTL
when the 7 metres length ACC-25A/30 control cable connects to the Rx.
The antenna can also be used independently with a BCU-25 battery unit
which screws into the unit allowing band switching via a front panel
rotary switch. Please specify how you wish to use the antenna.
The use of tuned matching transformers increases the sensitivity of the
loop whilst reducing the risk of overload across the band. A Thru-Wall Filter (AWF-75) is available for a
more permanent set-up where the ACC-25A/30 control cable has to pass through into a chamber. The
control cable then comes in two lengths.

Model 6402 - Helmholtz Coil System
Model 6402 Helmholtz coil system has twin 0.6 metre (2ft) diameter
coils in a Helmholtz configuration and normally used as a Magnetic
Field Immunity Test System or simply a low frequency magnetic field
calibrator. A magnetic field is produced by two coils that is essentially
homogenous throughout the volume between the face of the coils and
one-third diameter of the coils at it’s centre. The coils are supported
by a non-metallic framework. A rotating, height-adjustable pedestal is
capable of holding articles weighing up to 15kg. The Coil has been
initially calibrated at the NPL in terms of uT/amp at 50Hz. For the end
user’s convenience NPL have also quoted a figure of uTesla per
millivolt as measured across an installed shunt resistor with
measuring terminal placed at the base of the Helmholtz. This was
done at 60Hz and 2kHz. Typical examples of field using the crown LF
amplifier can be seen on the graph below where the Crown amplifier
(item 402) is hard driven with 3.1vrms input. At 1kHz, a field of 195
microTesla is achievable with the amplifier supplying 1.4amperes (hard driven). Built in on the base is the
feed connector with 1ȍ resistor for current verification. Also a 4m amplifier o/p supply lead. The device can

EMCO 5102 TEM Cell - DC to 300MHz
The 5102 Transverse Electromagnetic (Crawford) Cell is a 2ft large rectangular transmission line end
tapered 24” (60cm) to a coaxial line. Normally, one end is terminated in a precision 50ȍ RF load ( of
sufficient wattage) whilst the voltage at the feed end is accurately determined over the usable frequency
range. The cell is also a shielded enclosure providing electrical isolation for various tests. Both the upper
and lower halves may be used to obtain accurate field readings by dividing the rms voltage on the septum
by the septum to floor distance in metres. A principal function of the TEM cell serves as a calibration
source for field intensity. Hence, field strength meters can be placed inside (if size permits) to check
readings. The cell of course can be used as a simple small chamber for straight immunity work.
Construction: The cell is constructed of aluminum. The body and door are .125” aluminum sheet and the
septum is .190” aluminum sheet. The taper to cable connection (transition B) is machined aluminum.
Dielectric support rods are 1” (2.5cm) Delrin. Septum to surface distance is 12”. Hence, EUT size: 4” sq.

EMCO 3301B Active Rod Antenna 1kHz-30MHz - Rx only
EMCO model 3301 rod is designed to measure the “E” field in a single
band over the prescribed frequency range. With its companion transmitting
rod, the 3303 (Item 323), it sees most work in performing Chamber
Shielding Tests to MIL-STD-285 and NSA 65-6.The antenna factor 3dB
roll-off points are 175Hz and 35MHz. Between 250Hz and 20MHz, the
antenna factor is flat within +-1dB. To help prevent saturation at the low
frequency end, the lower 3dB point is switch-selectable at 170Hz; 1.9kHz
or 22kHz. Saturation will not occur below a field strength of 0.7V/m
resulting in an extremely wide dynamic range of 115dB nominal at midband. Internal attenuators of 10 and 30dB provide the ability to increase the upper limit of the antenna to
22V/m. A saturation indicator alerts the user should overload occur. The mechanics of the antenna consist
of an adjustable rod, a 24” x 24” counterpoise. A high input impedance amplifier built into the base and a

and 325) Combined, this antenna set is used to measure to MILSTD-285 and NSA 65-6 Shielding Effectiveness (“E” field). The
model RVR-25/30 has been substituted in place of the EMCO 3301B
which would require constant
attention to the overload situation.
With the RVR-25 there is no
amplifier to saturate instead there is
a 10 position band switch enabling
a form of tuning to provide the best
impedance
conversion
whilst
discriminating against frequencies
outside the passband.
ITEM 325
EM-RVR-25A Switchable Rod. 10kHz-30MHz - Rx only
Originally configured for MIL-STD testing. The RVR25A remote 41”
rod antenna transforms the electric field component through ten passive
transformer matching circuits from 10kHz-30MHz in octaves. It has
been designed for use with either the EMC-30 GPIB controlled receiver
or the manual EMC-25 version (Section 100) plus of course other 50ȍ
input receivers. It matches the same octave ranges as the ten matching
bands of the EMC30/25 Receivers. The matching network switches
automatically via TTL when the 8 metres length ACC-25A/30 control
cable is connected to the Rx.
The antenna can also be used independently with a BCU-25 battery unit
which screws into the antenna base allowing band switching via a front
panel rotary switch. Please specify how you wish to use the antenna.
The use of tuned matching transformers increases the sensitivity of the
loop whilst reducing the risk of overload across the band. A Thru-Wall
Filter (AWF-75) is available for a more permanent set-up where the ACC-25A/30 control cable has to pass
through into a chamber. The control cable then comes in two lengths. NOTE: If you need a groundplane
with the antenna, then order (Item 325A) below with it.

300Watt i/p
Another well constructed example of the combination of the
folded “X wing” and the logarithmic sections to produce the
familiar “Bilog” arrangement covering 30MHz to 3GHz. The
folded X wing reduces coupling to the chamber floor or
ceiling when in vertically polarized configuration. The
extended frequency range is useful also in the receiving mode
with good symmetry and a reasonable Antenna Factor at the
higher frequencies. See chart. A popular model amongst test

Electro-Metrics Bilog model EM-6917B. 26MHz-3GHz. 1kWatt i/p
The EM-6917B Biconilog Periodic Antenna combines the standard log
periodic and biconical elements to produce the customary hybrid
operating from 30MHz-3GHz for “E” field measurement and the
transmission of fields within EN61000-4-3 spectrum. It appeared about
the same time as item 336 form Schaffner. Although not calibrated
below 30MHz it will nevertheless perform down to 26MHz satisfying
the requirement on some of the older immunity specs. It is linearly
polarized permitting independent assessment of both H & V parameters
in measurement. The model hired under item 337 is actually the 6917B2 version which has collapsible cone
elements which cover the 26MHz-200MHz
portion of the spectrum. The device will need
a sturdy platform or support so unless the customer has a tripod already they are
advised to visit section 800 & select perhaps items 800 or 801. Included within
the packing box is a 0.8M rod for attachment to the tripod enabling the frame to

The standard biconical has a tip to tip of 1.3m with a diameter of 52cm.
At the lowest frequency of operation ( 30MHz) the smallest cage is about 8-10 dB down on a standard cage
but as the frequency rises toward the 300MHz end the difference becomes minimal. However, the useful
range with the smallest cage is toward the 1 GigaHertz end. The disadvantage is in the linearity of gain
over the range. However again, if spot frequencies are chosen where shielding is concerned, prudent
selection of frequencies can ensure an adequate dynamic range with just 50 watt feeding the balun.
ITEM 339
EMCO 3104/3109 Shielding Test Set. 30MHz - 300MHz
The box comprises the EMCO 3104 Bicon
antenna which can absorb 50 watt before
saturation or damage. This is used as the
receiving antenna normally placed outside the
shielding surface to be tested. A set of collapsible
cages identical with those of the transmit balun
are included. The transmit balun is that of either
the EMCO 3109 or as seen in the photo the 3108.
Both baluns are virtually identical in their size
and RF performance although the 3109 can
handle 1kWatt of input power whereas the 3108
is limited to 300 Watt. But both input powers are
more than adequate to provide the necessary
dynamic measuring ranges.
Where internal transmitting space is critical take
a look at item 338 although power handling is
somewhat reduced.
ITEM 340
EMCO 3104C Biconical Antenna 20MHz-300MHz 50 watts i/p maximum
The EMCO 3104P biconical antenna is excellently designed for simplicity
and is a good alternative to dipole antennas where elements would have to
be adjusted each time a new frequency is measured. It is extremely
lightweight and easy to handle. It comes with portable elements which can
be stowed easily when not in use. The antenna can take 50Watts i/p and so
can be used for low level field generation.
Manufactured to conform to MIL-STD-461 and other
standards and illustrated in Drawing ES-F-201286, this
antenna has had an extensive role on commercial test
sites testing to
EN55022.This antenna is often used for shielding
effectiveness testing as the balun will not overload
with higher than normal signal strengths as experienced in shielding work.
NOTE: The P after the model number denotes that a collapsible antenna cage has
been fitted instead of the fixed cage. This is for ease of transportation. The portable elements are
shown below.

DoD and Military EMI Specifications. This antenna is really for usage in
Radiated Immunity with an ability to handle 300Watts of i/p power but
Radiated Emissions tests can also be performed. It is lightweight and
portable. The elements are constructed from tack welded aluminium rods
and the 4 to 1 balun network is made of PTFE thermoplastic material with a
modified line transformer for improved impedance matching. The item
comes in a customised case which includes a flat extender mount 310 which
provides separation from a tripod (Item 800) top allowing 90 degree rotation
without hitting the legs. Extended elements (Item 342A) can be ordered with
this antenna as an option to improve transmission transfer in the 26HHz 70MHz region of operation.

EMCO 3109P Biconical Antenna - 20MHz-300MHz 1kW power input.
EMCO model 3109 is a high field biconical antenna and generates
high levels of EM fields. Radiated Immunity as per EN61000-4-3
is achieved using the 3109 because of its ability to handle high
power levels over a broadband. The unit uses a modified
Guanella balun for impedance transformation and matching. Very
easy to assemble and store. A customised case contains a
mounting jig to give a radial polarisation option. Your will need a
sturdy tripod (Item 800) for this antenna as seen.
NOTE: If difficulty is experienced in achieving field strength at low frequency end of test, then (Item

Model XP (Part No 103032B) Bicon Element Extenders
An extended version of the portable biconical elements is available for the
EMCO 3108 “high field” (Item 341) and the EMCO 3109 “ high
power”(Item 342) and EMCO 3108 (item 341) bicons. These folding
elements are twice as long as the standard elements. This extra length helps
to generate a higher field for the same power input at the low frequency
end of operation or a reduction of 25% power can be realised for the same
field. This could save considerably on amplifier costs. This item is an
option for the two previous items. Photo to right shows the standard bicon
sitting under the extended model.
Do consider the necessary extra height in the form of mounting. A tripod

Model 3110P is a high performance receiving antenna only. The balun,
feedline, and element housing give the 3110P response curves that are almost
linear, making it ideal for swept measurements. It uses an unbalanced-tobalanced txfm with ferrites along the feedline to eliminate any V-to-H changes
with polarisation.

This antenna is designed for operation with any 50: receiver (Section 100). Ideal
for EN55022 Spot Frequency Emission Testing Measurements. The two sets of
telescopic elements plus fixed length extensions are made from stainless steel.
Adjustment dipoles are set by the Frequency Conversion
Scale. The TDA-25 is designed to operate with two
different sized sets of adjustable elements plus fixed
extensions. The smaller set covers 100-200MHz. The
larger set of adjustables covers 45-100MHz. This is then
extended down to 30MHz with a fixed extension. A
handbook provides the AF’s and comprehensively
instructs the end user how to assemble and measure with
the TD-25. Mounting is achieved by the balun arm sitting in an AMT-25 “cup”
which has a 5/8UNC f recess attaching to any number of our devices with a 5/8 UNC stud.

broadband antenna is ideally suited to swept measurements. The
attributes of the log periodic are well known and it has seen service in
commercial testing for thirty years or so. This particular model is
lightweight and compact and once calibrated can be relied upon to
maintain its performance. The elements are not so prone to bending as
with the larger biconilogs. Due to their frequency coverage and design
they are naturally directional. They come in a custom fitted case with
handbook and attaching mounts. Check that you can mount the device
effectively.

EMCO 3101 Log Conical Spiral Antenna 200MHz-1GHz - 100W Max.
Model 3101 is a circularly polarized conical log-spiral broadband
antenna. The characteristics exhibit a low VSWR with a moderate
gain. This design came from the MIL-STD and SAE arena but
some of its advantages have been utilised commercially. As an

sweep as it is equally sensitive in both planes. Similarly with the
immunity. On a similar theme, it can be mounted vertically wrt the
ground and then used as an omni-directional horizontally polarised
antenna for surveillance or survey. 3101’s will receive both
circular and linear polarised waves (the linear is about 3dB down).

EMCO Model 3160-07 Horn Antennae 8.2GHz - 12.4GHz (Set of 2)
The EMCO models 3160-07 to 3160-08 are examples of a set of
pyramidal standard gain horn antennae designed for use in
Immunity Testing. Linearly polarized, medium gain, half power
beamwidth (equal in both horizontal and vertical planes) and a
very low VSWR over the operating frequency range. They can
be used easily with a fixed antenna factor over the range. Pairs
of antennas are also used in shielding effectiveness tests. Its
performance is precise and predictable through design
parameters. Input and output of the antenna are matched from
50: to 377: respectively. Comparison on measured versus
computed gain and antenna factors of the EMCO horns have
been found to be within r 0.5dB. Therefore, such antennas are
considered to be the standard reference for measurements above
1GHz. As per ANSI C63.4. The 3dB beamwidth in both polarisation planes is very nearly equal at
approximately 30 degrees. These antennae have a detachable coax-to-waveguide feed, but come fitted
ready to use with precision “N”. Mounting is with ¼ UNC receptacle on two brackets at 90 degrees. They
