News 10.2 Distributor Conversion
“NO POINTS” IS A GOOD POINT In this article, we are converting a points distributor to an electronic distributor. The advantages you get in this conversion are worth every penny. This installation delivers a big bang for the buck; your motor will see more fuel efficiency, run smoother and have higher horsepower. Points will be a thing of the past, just like VHS tapes have been replaced by DVD’s. But if you want to save money, buy the parts and do the labor yourself, which is fairly easy. Or if you are in need of a complete distributor, then we sell brand new electronic distributors. On our car, we kept the stock distributor and installed the electronic module conversion, FlameThrower 45K coil, and 8mm spark plug wires. Though the wires can be time consuming to install, the extra hot spark they deliver is worth every minute. Since we ran the Flamethrower coil, there was no need to run a ballast resistor on the firewall. The coil has the built in resistance to keep your module firing correctly. You must read all instructions before doing anything to your car. The instructions that come with the module and coils have lots of good information in them. When we finished the car, we didn’t realize the ballast resistor needed to go, which made the car run really rough because it was pulling more resistance to the module, which kept the plugs from getting the right spark. Once we eliminated the resistor, everything smoothed out. So, carefully read your instructions before you start, as well as while you’re doing the job. There are a few spark plug wire holders to choose from. The #1446 spark plug shields are used on the 5657 ram horn exhaust manifolds and can not be used on motors with the side engine mount bosses. Otherwise, just stick with the #1158, 1159, 1160 wire supports. The firing order for a 6-cyl motor is 1-5-3-6-2-4, with # 1 cylinder being in front. On the V-8 engine, the firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 with 1,3,5,7 cylinders are on the Drivers side and 2,4,6,8 being on the Passenger side. The firing order goes in the clockwise direction of the distributor cap. I don’t know about you, but I am really looking forward to some warmth. Not just because I get to throw on the shorts and sandals, but because that means our outdoor show season is back. We all get to take those classic Chevy winter projects out for a good long drive and some great outdoor meets. Nothing excites me more than getting out to a good swap meet or car show. In the spirit of putting our classics back on the road we are highlighting some of our parts that make the ride a little smoother and safer. On page four we have showcased our new Pertronix ignition line. Some of you may have already heard about Pertronix, and let me tell you that we have found it all to be true. We have done an installation article on our 1956 Convertible with their products and were amazed at how much better it ran when we were finished. On page five we are listing some brand new parts that didn’t make the catalog. The pictures tell it all but these new pulley systems are the only way to go for today’s Hot Rodder. Also, on pages six and seven we have laid out a great deal of our brake and suspension parts. It seems to be the time of year when everyone wants to get the stopping problems ironed out and we wanted to try and help a little. As I said before, this is the beginning of my favorite time of the year for our cars and all of us couldn’t be more excited. Keep an eye open for a whole pile of new and exciting parts from us this year. Thanks for enabling all of us at Danchuk to do what we love in life, fix classic Chevrolets. Happy Restoring, Steve Brown General Manager DISTRIBUTOR INSTALLATION ARTICLE • Lacquer thinner • WD-40 or other lubricant • Shop rags Different tools will be needed depending on your application. Before you begin, lift your hood and lay fender covers, like our Danchuk covers, #1048, on both sides of the front fenders. This will save your paint. Removal: 1.) Remove both battery cables on your 55-56 chevy. On a 1957, just disconnect your negative battery cable. 2.) Remove the battery and tray from your 55-56 chevy using your 1/2" socket and drive with the small and long extensions or use the 1/2" wrench. 3.) Remove the air cleaner. 4.) Remove the distributor vacuum line with the 3/8" and 7/16" wrenches. Other vacuum lines will be rubber and you can just pull them off. 5.) Remove your coil. Mark your wires with the masking tape so you know where to put the wires back on correctly. If you use the Flamethrower coil, you will have to do some wire changes. Remove the wires with your 3/ 8" wrench. We removed the coil with the coil bracket on. Just take your 1/2" socket and long extension and remove the 2 bolts holding on the bracket to the intake manifold. Lift off your coil and put it on the bench. 6.) Remove your distributor cap and rotor using your medium screwdriver to undo the clips on the cap. You may remove the spark plug wires from the cap, but mark them with the masking tape if you’re not sure how they go back. The firing order is at the beginning of this article if you get lost, and/or the shop manual tells you how to get them back into position. On this car, we took out all the spark plug wires and started over with brand new 8mm wires. 7.) Remove the 2 screws that are holding the points and condenser onto the breaker plate inside the distributor with your small screwdriver. Take your needle nose pliers and remove the points and condenser from the distributor. Take a rag and put some lacquer thinner on it and remove any grease or dirt from inside the distributor. Now it should be clean and ready for the new module. Installation: 1.) Take your new ignition module conversion out of the box and read the instructions on how it gets mounted in the distributor. On this car, we mounted the adaptor plate in first with a small Phillips screw provided. Then we put the module, with wires, in position over the studs and tightened it down with the 1/4" wrench. One side was a tight fit to get to the nut, so we used the needle nose pliers to tighten the nut. DO NOT over tighten the screws and nuts. It is easy to strip out the Take a look at us now! It came with an extra adaptor plate to shim, but the instructions said to only use it with a certain kit which we were not using. 2.) Feed the red and black wires through the distributor hole that the old distributor wire came through. Make sure the wires are free of any moving parts inside the distributor. Now pull the grommet, attached to the wires, up to the distributor wire hole and push onto the distributor. 3.) Install the rotor and cap. Take the coil out of the box and install that into the old coil bracket and reinstall it back on your car. 4.) Connect the black wire on the negative side of the coil and the red wire will go to the positive side of the coil along with your existing wire that you took off. Since we ran the Flamethrower coil, we took off the ballast resistor on the firewall and tied the wires together that came from the ballast. This way, all the current goes straight to the coil from the ignition switch instead of being resisted through the ballast. Note: remember to read the coil and module instructions to see what application is right for your conversion. If you don’t use the high extreme coil, your wiring hookup will be different for the red wire coming out of the distributor. Installing the Spark Plug Wires: 1.) Remove the spark plug wires and ends from the box. Sort them out because you will have HEI ends and regular ends. These spark plug wires are cut to fit, which is good because you will not have an excess amount of wires looped around anything. The only draw back is that it is very time consuming to put these together. You have to take your time in order not to cut into the core of the plug wires. 2.) First, put your longest spark plug wire on your #1 spark plug. (Remember, your firing order numbers are listed at the beginning of this article). Feed that through your wire support holders and up to your #1 slot on your distributor cap. Hopefully you marked which one that was on your new cap. Take your sharp wire cutters and cut your spark plug wire to the length that you want it. I pulled the wire back out and put it on the bench to do the rest of the work. 3.) Take your angle boot and spray it with WD-40 inside and shake the excess out. Now spray the end of the wire and feed your angle boot onto the wire and pull enough through to put the end on. Measure up 5/8" and cut or score a line all the way around the insulation of the wire. Pick up the wire and bend it so that you can carefully cut around the line, but remember not to cut the center core. Now pull the insulation off what you have cut. Take the center core, bend it down and around and install the correct end on so that the core is in between the gold end and the wire insulation. Now crimp the end on with your wire stripper pliers and bend it so that it matches the spark plug boot. Spray the end with your WD-40 so you can move the boot back over the end that you put on. We chose the gold ends because we are running the stock distributor cap. The other ends are for the HEI cap. 4.) Now you have to do this for the rest of the 7 cylinders. Finish each one completely as you do it. This will save some confusion later if they were just sitting scattered. The 8mm wires fit really nice into the stock wire supports. No modification was needed on the wire holders. The finish product is nice and neat. Once you’ve finished, install the battery tray and battery back in the car. Other Notes: Start the car up and check to see if your running smooth or rough. If problems occur or if you don’t like how rough it’s running, read the questions and answers of the module instructions. It gives some good tips on what to look for. Otherwise check your wires, make sure they are in the correct firing order on your cap and on the correct corresponding numbers of the spark plugs. Also double check your timing with a timing light just to make sure everything is dialed in. If you buy the stock wire supports, use your assembly manual to look at so you know exactly how and where all the wires are to be mounted. It’s a great help. All the V-8 engine stuff is in the back R.P.O section of the manual. Danchuk . . .
