Dunbar’s life and poetry to readers
young and old in Jump Back Paul:
The Legend of the Christmas
Cookie (ages 4-8) tells the story of how
Christmas cookies originated as a way to
tell people about the Nativity. The family
who began the tradition of baking the
special cookies gave them to the needy and
used them to share the story of the very
first Christmas. Of Gambier, Richard’s
warm and endearing illustrations also
bring to life The Legend of St. Nicholas
(ages 4-8). One rainy night, a scruffy puppy’s dream comes true in
an unexpected way when he meets a special family. Rich in Biblical
imagery, The Puppy That No One Wanted (ages 4-8) reassures
that we can find our true home in God. Richard is also the illustrator
of the Bad Dog, Marley picture books (for ages 4-8). [Table 8]

live our own. An Uncomplicated
Life: A Father’s Memoir of His
Exceptional Daughter recounts
stories from Jillian’s mischievous childhood and traces her journey
to find happiness and purpose in her adult life. Sharing endearing
anecdotes as well as stories about her inspiring triumphs, An
Uncomplicated Life shows how parents can learn as much about
life from their children as children do from their parents. [Table 23]
The Life and Poems of Paul
Laurence Dunbar (ages 9-12).
More than two dozen of Dunbar’s
poems are woven throughout the book,
illuminating the phases of his life and
serving as examples of dialect, imagery,
and tone. In Sunday Shopping (ages
4-8), Evie and Grandma climb into bed and go on a shopping
spree through the newspaper ads. Of Cincinnati, Sally also
wrote King Kenrick’s Splinter (ages 4-8) about a King who
tries to ignore the painful splinter in his toe, but finally agrees to
have it tended to so he can lead a parade. [Table 30]

his coffee. It seems he had a severe allergy
to peanuts, but how could there have been nuts in his coffee?
Fortunately, Krissy’s love of puzzles and mysteries leads her to
investigate the case and read between the lies in order to save her
new store—and live to see how the story ends. [Table 29]

Cold Creek, Ohio, is a place with
a dark history, especially for the
Lockwoods. In Shattered Secrets, Tess
Lockwood inherits her family’s home
and confronts the demons that have
haunted her from childhood. Then
in Forbidden Ground, Tess’ sister
Kate returns to town and is interested
in an Indian burial mound, but the
landowner refuses to let her investigate
and Kate suspects he’s hiding something deadly. In the final
novel in the trilogy, Broken Bonds, Tess and Kate’s sister
Char is back in town and runs afoul of some locals who think
she’s sticking her social-worker nose where it doesn’t belong.
She’s certain something sinister is being covered up. A lifelong
Ohioan, Karen lives in Columbus. [Table 28]
In The First Celebrity Serial
Killer in Southwest Ohio, true

the media frenzy surrounding the
confessions of Alfred Knapp for the murder
of five women. A hapless, brain-damaged
drifter who spent most of his life in prison,
Knapp charmed a flock of reporters from
around the Midwest with cheerful, frank
discussions of his crimes. Jones’ first book,
Cincinnati’s Savage Seamstress, tells the story of Edythe
Klumpp, who in 1958 confessed to the murder of her boyfriend’s
wife. When handed a death sentence for the crime, Klumpp changed
her story, and it took several years for her dedicated attorney and the
governor of Ohio to untangle her web of lies. [Table 40]
Kenn & Kimberly Kaufman
Nancy Herriman
In 1860s San Francisco, gold buys the
best that life has to offer. Without it,
not even justice is guaranteed. This is a

one of her patients, an impoverished
young Chinese woman, is murdered.
Is she the latest victim of anti-Chinese
violence, or is it true that Celia’s
brother-in-law is the killer? And will
the detective assigned to the case actually help? No Comfort
for the Lost is the first book in Nancy’s new A Mystery of Old
San Francisco series. Of Dublin, Ohio, Nancy retired from an
engineering career to take up the pen. [Table 43]

that tells the story of the 1954 Cleveland Indians and the
infamous murder of the wife of Dr. Sam Sheppard. [Table 40]
Wendy Koile
Beautiful and deadly, the Lake Erie
islands have seen their fair share of
disasters. From vicious storms to small
pox and an unsolved murder, a secluded
home in paradise can quickly become a
floating prison with no chance of escape.
Koile chronicles the stories of struggles,
hardships, and tragedies from the early
days up to recent times in Disasters
of Ohio’s Lake Erie Islands. Revealing a cast of characters
as rich as any secret hoard, Legends and Lost Treasures of
Northeast Ohio unearths northern Ohio’s best treasure tales—
from sunken ships to misplaced spoils of war. [Table 47]
Kylie Logan
Brecksville author Kylie Logan includes
recipes in each of her Chili Cook-off
Mysteries. Maxie and Sylvia dress up as
the Chili Queens to raise money for
charity, but someone wasn’t feeling too
charitable toward a local troubadour who
is murdered at the fundraiser. Following
Chili Con Carnage and Death by
Devil’s Breath, Revenge of the
Chili Queens takes the chili cookoff circuit to southern Texas to prove that revenge is a dish best
served hot. The League of Literary Ladies is a book discussion
group, but each classic book they read leads to a murder in
Mayhem at the Orient Express, A Tale of Two Biddies, and
The Legend of Sleepy Harlow. [Table 14]

Marlene C. Miller
Fewer than 100 outsiders have joined,
and stayed, Amish since 1950. Marlene
Miller is one of them. In a rare memoir,
Marlene recounts her unhappy childhood,
her high school years as a cheerleader and
majorette, and how she fell in love with
a gentle young Amish man. In Called
to Be Amish: My Journey from Head Majorette to
the Old Order, Marlene recounts her journey into the Amish
community where she dons Amish dress, is baptized, struggles to
raise ten children, manages a 100-acre farm, and endures personal
tragedies. Turning Amish is anything but plain, and Marlene nearly
walked away from it all, but almost 50 years later, she is still living out
God’s call as an Old Order Amish woman in rural Ohio. [Table 17]
From Sandusky, Paul is a former teacher
whose stories offer an easy and enjoyable
way to encourage and help children to
read. The Ant and the Pancake
(We Both Read Level K-1) combines two
stories in one. The first story follows the
adventures of a little ant. In the second
story, a wild chef and couple of mice
have fun making yummy pancakes. A
smart little mouse evades capture in A
Mouse in My House (We Both Read Level 1); a boy deals with
the scariest babysitter ever in My Sitter Is a T-Rex (We Both Read
Level 1-2); and a boy and his dad build a Robot Man (Level 4)
that works great…until it falls off the roof! [Table 48]
Karen A. Patterson
Serena Miller
The more time Serena spent in Holmes
County doing research for her Amish
novels, the more she noticed that Amish
children were the happiest children she’d
ever seen. In More Than Happy:
The Wisdom of Amish Parenting,
Miller and co-author Paul Stutzman
reveal many surprising insights, including
the significance of real responsibilities,
the wisdom of unplugging from
technology, the value of unstructured time for play, the importance
of firm rules, and the importance of each teenager’s freedom
to decide what is best for their future. Miller will also sign her
inspirational romance novels set in Amish Country, Fearless Hope,
Hidden Mercies, and Uncommon Grace. [Table 16]

One kid. One crime. One chance to
make things right. After injuring a
trash picker, Arthur gets 120 hours of
community service, working for the
Junk Man himself. Arthur is given a cart
and a list of seven things to collect from
peoples’ trash. In The Seventh Most
Important Thing (ages 9-12), Arthur
learns there’s more to the Junk Man
than meets the eye, and the “trash” he’s
collecting is being transformed into something more precious than
anyone could imagine. Set in 1945, Jump Into the Sky (ages 1013) is a story of a father and his teenage son, a secret mission, and
an unforgettable summer of self-discovery. Shelley lives in Silver
Lake and is also the author of contemporary novels All Shook Up
(ages 9-12) and All of the Above (ages 12-16). [Table 29]
Author of the Akron Beacon Journal’s
weekly “This Place, This Time” column,
Mark Price explores the history of
Akron and Summit County through
compelling vignettes compiled in a bestof collection, The Rest Is History: True
Tales from Akron’s Vibrant Past. From
a prehistoric locale such as the Big Falls
of the Cuyahoga River to the cavernous
1970s majesty of the Coliseum, Lost
Akron explores the places that have melted away in Akron’s
changing landscape. For those who live in Akron, for those who
have moved away, and for those too young to remember the
Rubber City’s heyday, Lost Akron takes a fascinating look at fifty
vanished landmarks from Akron’s past. [Table 20]
Ralph Pfingsten & Gary Swilik & Blaine Hays
West Park Historical Society members
Ralph Pfingsten and Gary Swilik are coauthors of West Park Then & Now which
presents historic and contemporary photos
alongside detailed descriptions of what
used to be and what is now in place. Their
One Minute to Puritas Springs Park is a
history of the West Side amusement park
that was in operation from 1895 to 1958.
Pfingsten is the author of The History of
the Ravenna Arsenal, about the WWII munitions facility that has
been shrouded in mystery since its creation in 1940. He and Blaine
Hays cover the historic interurbans, streetcars, trolleys, and trains
that were the Rails through West Park. [Table 43]
Way, way far south, two petite penguins,
Flipper and Slipper, have braved the long
Antarctic winter night listening to stories
about the great penguin explorer, Don
Pinguino. When the sun finally comes up,
the penguins eagerly set out to find their
hero. With a song in their hearts, they
make the trek through South and Central
America to the fabled Land of the Golden
Sun, making discoveries and friends along
the way. Slipper and Flipper and the Quest for the
Golden Sun (ages 4-8) is written and illustrated by Susan, who
began her career working for American Greetings. She lives in the
historic Tremont neighborhood in Cleveland. [Table 33]

The Buckeye Trail wends its way
around the state of Ohio, marked
out by characteristic blue blazes.
Follow the Blue Blazes:
A Guide to Hiking Ohio’s
Buckeye Trail, 2nd Edition
is revised and updated and includes
new GPS maps. The book opens
with tips on preparing for a hike and each further chapter covers
100-mile sections of the trail. From the startling rock formations
and graceful waterfalls of Old Man’s Cave, to Native American
mounds, battlefields, and scenic rivers, Bob and Connie provide a
captivating guide to often-overlooked treasures. Bob and Connie
have had a 30 year association with the Buckeye Trail Association as
trail maintainers, hikers, and board members. [Table 25]

In One Mountain Away, book one of
former Clevelander Emilie Richards’
Goddesses Anonymous series, an ambitious
woman realizes her dedication has almost
cost her her happiness. A former prisoner
struggles with her past and future in
book two, Somewhere Between Luck
and Trust and in book three, No River
Too Wide, courage and forgiveness
lead to redemption. Minister Analiese
Wagner has always been dedicated to her parishioners, but her
commitment is tested when she takes a homeless family under
her wing in The Color of Light, the fourth and newest
book in the series. With a defeated family’s trust and her own
happiness on the line, Analiese must define for herself where
darkness ends and light begins. [Table 14]
James Robbins
Julie Rubini
The Real Custer: From Boy
General to Tragic Hero takes a
good hard look at the life and storied
military career of native Ohioan George
Armstrong Custer—from cutting his
teeth at Bull Run in the Civil War, to
his famous and untimely death at Little
Bighorn. Robbins demonstrates that,
although graduating last in his class at
West Point, Custer proved himself an
extremely skilled cavalry leader, yet his undoing was due to the
same bold and cocky attitude that had made him a hero. Last
in Their Class: Custer, Pickett, and the Goats of West Point
provides a fascinating look at West Point under-achievers who
found both successful and notorious careers outside the academy.
Robbins received his PhD from the Fletcher School of Law
and Diplomacy and is a member of the advisory board to the
National Civil War Museum. [Table 34]
Missing Millie Benson: The
Secret Case of the Nancy Drew
Ghostwriter and Journalist (ages
10+) uncovers the true story of Millie
Benson, a writer for the Stratemeyer
syndicate which paid its writers a flat fee for
their work. Under the pen name Carolyn
Keene, Millie wrote a new series starring
amateur sleuth Nancy Drew, a young,
independent woman not unlike Millie
herself. In all, Millie wrote more than 100 novels for young people
and was also a journalist for the Toledo Times and The Blade. Julie’s
Hidden Ohio (ages 6-9) explores all that makes Ohio unique, and
readers will uncover hidden items on every page. [Table 20]

Today a buck gets you a quick burger (or
two), but what’s the real cost of that meal?
We rely on industry to put dinner on the

So how do we keep America thriving?

Milan Jacovich for his 18th case in
Ashtabula Hat Trick. Possible leads are
a highly-influential bigoted pastor and the
nearby Conneaut prison which is privately
run, overcrowded, and rumored to employ
some questionable methods (as well as many local residents). Les
Roberts lives in Cleveland, the hometown of private eye Milan
Jacovich. Les has a new series featuring Dominick Candiotti, a
professional assassin that wants out. Wet Work is a gripping catand-mouse tale about the struggle for power. [Table 13]
Michael J. Rosen
Columbus author and poet, Michael J.
Rosen’s evocative haikus in The Maine
Coon’s Haiku: And Other Poems
for Cat Lovers (ages 4-8) depict
twenty different breeds of cats—whether
mischievous or mysterious, comical or
commanding. Forever Flowers
(ages 5-9) is a tender story about the
virtues of finding, keeping, and letting
go. When a blizzard traps a family
outside, a cattle dog devises a rescue in Tale of Rescue (ages
9-12), a moving and beautifully illustrated story. [Table 24]
Healthy Eating, Green Groceries,

lunch, and dinner. But his Nana persists
in tempting him with a variety of other
good, homemade foods in Tony Baroni

includes a list of mealtime activities and a
chart of pasta shapes. With a dinnertime
mystery and five hungry suspects, Charlie Piechart and
the Case of the Missing Pizza Slice (ages 5-9) makes
fractions fun. Marilyn lives in Rocky River and loves to make
kids laugh with her humorous early-reader children’s books (for
ages 3-7) including Ten Eggs in a Nest, It’s Not Easy Being a
Bunny, and Pass It On. [Table 25]

Yolonda Tonette Sanders
Wages of Sin introduces Columbus
homicide detective Troy Evans as he
desperately hunts down a serial killer while
his wife Natalie becomes increasingly
frustrated with his job. The second in
Columbus author Yolonda Sanders’
Protective Detective mystery series, Day
of Atonement shows the devastation
domestic violence can cause and how
sometimes, mistakes of the past cannot be
undone. In Shadow of Death, Troy becomes a prime suspect
when an ex-girlfriend is found dead after they’ve had a fight in
public. With his marriage at risk, and now on the opposite side
of the law, Troy must prove he is not a cheater or murderer to
save his badge, his freedom, and his family. [Table 18]

Paul Stutzman’s life has given him
material for his books. His adventure
memoir, Hiking Through, follows
his hike of the Appalachian Trail
as he attempts to put his life back
together after the death of his wife.
Biking Across America is the account
of another solitary adventure. His
newest book, Stuck in the Weeds,
combines both adventure and spiritual
reflection. He has also published the first two novels of The
Wanderers series, a story of families in a community much like
the Amish/Mennonite culture in which Stutzman grew up. Paul
is a writer and speaker and lives in Berlin, Ohio, from which he
ventures forth seeking adventure and the truths of life. [Table 16]

Sultana blows him overboard. [Table 5]
Sam Thomas
Cleveland author Sam Thomas takes
readers back to Puritan England with his
historical mysteries featuring midwife
Bridget Hodgson, introduced in The
Midwife’s Tale. In The Harlot’s Tale,
York’s sinners have been targeted for
execution and the list of suspects is long.
To find the killer, Bridget must uncover
the city’s most secret sins. Winter
has come to the city of York in The
Witch Hunter’s Tale, and with it the threat of witchcraft.
As women and children sicken and die, Bridget is pulled against
her will into a full-scale witch-hunt that threatens to devour all in
its path, guilty and innocent alike. [Table 45]

In nearly a century of heavy rail travel in
Ohio, a dozen train accidents stand out
as the most horrific. Read the red-hot
stories of ill-fated passengers, heroic
trainmen, and the wrecking crews who
faced death and destruction on Ohio’s
rails in Ohio Train Disasters.
Jane Ann Turzillo combines her love of
history and true crime in her writing
which includes Murder and Mayhem
on Ohio’s Rails and Wicked Women of Northeast Ohio, a
chronicle of the misdeeds of ten dark-hearted women who refused
to play by the rules. They unleashed their most base impulses
using axes, guns, poison, and more. [Table 27]
Jan Wahl
Inspired by the incredible two-year journey
of a giraffe taken from Africa to France
in the 1800s, A Long Tall Journey
(ages 4-8) is told from the perspective of
the giraffe, Zarafa, and captures the sights
and sounds along the way. Although a
reluctant traveler at first, Zarafa encounters
curiosities and establishes a new purpose
in life in his new home. After a visit to
the Natural History Museum, a young
girl sees dinosaurs all around her in I Met a Dinosaur (ages
4-8). Toledo author Jan Wahl has written more than 100 books
for children including Cobweb Castle (ages 7+), illustrated
by Edward Gorey. Last printed in 1968, Cobweb Castle is an
enchanted place where a wily imagination thrives. The Screeching
Door (ages 10+) contains three of Jan’s best spooky tales. [Table 21]

what he means. Luckily, just when he
needs it most, his first word comes
looking for him in Henry Finds His
Word (ages 3-5). Ever wondered what
it would be like to ride a carousel right off its platform? Please
Bring Balloons (ages 4-8) takes readers to the arctic and back—
in time for bedtime, of course—and reminds us that anything is
possible. Author/illustrator Lindsay Ward lives in Lakewood and

Read all about the fascinating Ohio
locations where the past comes alive—
in more ways than one—in Ohio’s
Historic Haunts: Investigating
the Paranormal in the Buckeye
State. A paranormal investigator,
Willis has interviewed, researched, and
personally investigated a number of Ohio
locations said to be haunted: the Arts
Castle in Delaware, Loveland Castle, the
Ohio State Reformatory, and many others. While it’s tough to
prove the presence of ghosts, it’s clear that ghost stories help to
keep history alive. Founder of the Ghosts of Ohio organization
based in Columbus, Willis is also the author of Weird Ohio and
The Big Book of Ohio Ghost Stories. [Table 35]
Cleary Wolters
Cleary Wolters, of Cincinnati, is the
real-life inspiration for the character Alex
Vause in the hit TV show Orange Is the
New Black. Cleary did watch the show
(along with the rest of the universe),
although what was fun for everyone else
was a weirdly personal and unnerving
interpretation of events that had shaped
her own life. Now speaking out for the
first time, Cleary shares her part of the
story including how she introduced Piper to the criminal activities
that would ultimately send both of them to prison. In Out of
Orange: A Memoir, Cleary honestly recounts an emotional
tale of the bold decisions and epic mistakes she made and her
struggle to keep them from defining the rest of her life. [Table 1]

Doyle Yoder
What better way to present Ohio’s Amish
Country than in a BIG calendar? Amish
Country Large Calendar 2016
opens to 18”x24”. The original Amish
Country Calendar 2016 featuring
scenic photos from the heart of Amish
Country has inspired two new similarlyformatted calendars: Themes of
Amish Country Calendar 2016:
Clothesline Edition containing
photos of the specific theme and America’s Amish Country
Calendar 2016 featuring photos from Amish communities across
the US. Doyle’s 1,000 piece puzzles are fun for the whole family.
The Apples of Mom’s Eye Puzzle features a beautiful homestead
and the Percheron Power Puzzle shows a twelve-horse team of
Percheron draft horses pulling a plow. Trail Bottom Autumn
Puzzle has a photo of breathtaking fall scenery while the Working
on the Farm Puzzle shows a lovely winter scene. [Table 10]
Gary Zuercher
Over a period of five years, Gary took
his cameras out into the Parisian night to
capture evocative images of the bridges
that span the River Seine. The Glow
of Paris: The Bridges of Paris
at Night is a lavish hardcover coffee
table book presenting photographs
and histories of the 35 bridges that
cross the Seine in Paris. No one else
has photographed all the bridges in
this way. At night, we don’t see crowds of people or heavy traffic
and nothing obscures the beauty and strength of the structures.
Gary’s black and white photographs are rich with detail, revealing
architectural elements, nearby buildings, trees on the riverbanks,
and starry lamps casting paths of light across the water. A native
of Wooster, Ohio, Zuercher and his French wife Dominique
divide their time between the US and Paris. His book is also
available in French, Paris s’illumine. [Table 27]

Buckeye Book Fair
Supports Literacy in Ohio
The Buckeye Book Fair promotes literacy by bringing
Ohio authors together with the reading public for an annual
book sale that raises money for libraries and literacy programs.
Created as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, Buckeye
Authors’ Book Fair Committee Inc was incorporated in
1987. From providing seed money for programs designed
to foster and encourage a love of reading, to providing
funds for enhancing and updating book collections in
classrooms and libraries, the Buckeye Book Fair has
awarded $211,419.25 in 266 grants since its inception.
Literacy Grants Awarded
Six literacy grants totaling $3,000 are awarded to
Ohio schools and libraries at each Book Fair.
Last year’s grants were awarded at the November 1, 2014
Buckeye Book Fair. The recipients were:
• Academy of Arts and Sciences (Lorain) • $500
• Central Elementary School (Cambridge) • $500
• Andover Public Library (Andover) • $500
• Clark County Juvenile Detention Center (Springfield) • $500
• Marvin Memorial Library (Shelby) • $500
• Lorain Preparatory Academy’s Reading Enrichment
Students (Lorain) • $500
Apply for a Grant
Librarians and literacy program administrators may
inquire at the Book Fair Information Table to receive
a 2016 grant application. Grants of $500 in books are
awarded to enhance book collections; or gift certificates
totaling $500 are awarded to individuals of classrooms and
literacy programs for the promotion of reading.
Submit a Book
Ohio authors are welcome to submit a book to be
considered for possible inclusion in the Buckeye Book Fair.
Send a review copy of your book to the address provided
below, or check out our website www.BuckeyeBookFair.com/
pages/submissions for complete submission guidelines and
more information.
New! Book Hold
One of our volunteers will be stationed at a table next
to the checkout area where books can be held while you
shop or wait in line. We hope you find this an added
convenience.
Visit Downtown Wooster
Visit downtown Wooster by heading north on Madison
Avenue (right turn out of Fisher) to Liberty Street,
Wooster’s main road. You’ll find restaurants, two bookstores
(new & used), antique shops, and much more!
Visitors Guides are available at the Information Table.
Thank you to Our volunteers
Members of the Book Fair’s steering committee meet
monthly throughout the year to discuss new books and
authors.
Members of the 2015 Buckeye Book Fair Steering
Committee are Daniel Bourne, Russell Cross, Alice
Finley, Jarrod Hartzler, Reg Kramer, Barb Landers, Cindy
Lombardo, Randy Snure, David Wiesenberg, Karin Wiest,
and Betty Wilkin.
The Buckeye Book Fair manager is Julia Wiesenberg.
Why Is There an Admission Charge?
The Buckeye Book Fair has certain fixed expenses that
must be met each year. Your $2 admission helps offset
these costs so that more funds can be made available for the
Buckeye Book Fair’s grants for literacy program.
No Strollers or Home Books
In order to keep aisleways clear, we ask you not to bring
baby strollers into the Book Fair.
Patrons will NOT be permitted to enter the Book
Fair with books brought from home to be signed. Your
purchases make the Book Fair possible and support Ohio’s
authors and illustrators.
We thank you for your support.
