PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Come one, come all!
A
fter a winter that gave us more
than our fair share of arctic
weather, we are all looking
forward to the beauty of spring in our
neighbourhood: gardens emerging, kids
playing outside and our time-honoured
tradition, Mayfair! This year, we celebrate
its 69th year with a Medieval Mayfair on
Friday, May 9 and Saturday, May 10, so dust off your suits of
armor and join us for a spectacular two days at Rosedale Park.
From the beer garden, live music and rides on Friday night to
the parade, bingo, baking booth, silent auction, track and field
events, games and BBQ on Saturday, there is no better place
to greet your neighbours and friends.
Ride vouchers can be purchased at Summerhill Market
or Mooredale House between April 23 and May 7; these
vouchers are valid for both Friday evening and Saturday.
Keep in mind that we will also continue with the successful
bike valet service so plan on pedaling to the park! Consider
supporting the efforts of our preschool by purchasing raffle
tickets – the prizes are always fantastic!
The entire Mooredale Board looks forward to seeing you
and your family at Rosedale Park for this wonderful multigenerational celebration. Mayfair is the largest and longest
running volunteer community fair in Toronto and truly
showcases what a special community we have, right in the
heart of the city!
See you at the park,

Special Mayfair Edition 2014
Medieval Mayfair
invites all
Knights and
Fair Ladies!
“The sun is a-rising to welcome the day.
Heigh-ho! Come to the fair!
So deck yourselves out in your finest array,
With a heigh-ho! Come to the fair!
There’ll be racing and chasing from morning till night,
And roundabouts turning to left and to right,
So lock up your house, there’ll be plenty of fun,
And it’s heigh-ho! Come to the fair!”
T
his familiar song about Mayfair can apply just as easily to
our Mayfair as it did to traditional May Fairs in Britain,
Ireland and North America. (Lyrics above are condensed
but you can listen to the original song on line.)
All the traditional fun at Mayfair will be there again this
year... And this newsletter is chock full of the details for you to
plan your visit to Mayfair at Rosedale Park on May 9 and 10. I
am especially looking forward to the costumes the kids decide
to wear in the parade and to the fair. Think dragons, knights,
ladies-in-waiting, kings, queens, or anything else that will reflect
those medieval times. If you come to the Mooredale Canopy,
you’ll even see me in costume on Saturday morning!
The lead up to May and Mayfair is definitely busy at
Mooredale. We welcome back many university students for their
summer jobs at the Pool and at Camp. Normally we would have
started all our Spring Sports and Soccer, but due to the very cold
winter and deep frost in the ground, the City has decided that
no field permits will be issued before May 13. We open the pool
for the 2500 members to enjoy on May 17 too, so there is lots of
preparation and enthusiasm for the Pool Club 2014 season.
Yes, May is an exciting month at Mooredale. We want you
greet you all at Medieval Mayfair. We hope you will celebrate
May at the fair, at the sports field, at the soccer pitch, in the pool
and in a Spring Program. Don’t forget you can sign up for Camp
and Summer Fun in May too!
Heigh Ho – See you at the Fair!

Celebrating Mooredale Concerts 25th Anniversary Season
C
World famous canadian brass dazzle and entertain
Mooredale Youth Orchestras perform famous works
anadian Brass makes their Mooredale Concerts debut
on Sunday April 27, 3:15pm at MacMillan Theatre in the
Edward Johnson Building, UofT (Museum subway). We
are thrilled to host international superstars in our own
backyard. Tickets are selling fast already, so music lovers and Brass
followers alike are advised to order now and avoid disappointment.
The Brass’ virtuosity as the best in horn performance is
unparalleled and they were the first brass only ensemble to
perform at the venerable Carnegie Hall. They’re also well known
for their rendition of popular music. We’ve asked them to perform
both, so the most
famous brass
ensemble on the
planet will inspire us
with the following:
Renaissance Brass –
selections
“Little” Fugue in G
minor – J.S. Bach/arr.
Mills
Selections from
Carnaval Op. 9 – Schumann/arr. Coletti/Ridenour
Quintet – Michael Kamen
Mostly Fats (Looking Good Feeling Bad, Handful of Keys) – Fats
Waller/arr. Henderson
Amazing Grace – Traditional/arr. Henderson
Symphony for Brass (a selection) – Ewald
Selections from Brahms on Brass – Brahms/arr. Coletti/Ridenour
Ain’t necessarily so – George Gershwin/arr. Henderson
Killer Tango – Sonny Kompanek
Carmen – Bizet/arr. Mills
Music & Truffles: An absolute guarantee that the Canadian Brass
will have young audiences ages 4 and up tapping their feet,
dancing in their seats and having an hour of fun at from 1:152:15pm at MacMillan Theatre.
A PRE-MAYFAIR SPECIAL PRICE FOR MOOREDALE MEMBERS:
Tickets for Music & Truffles are only $10 each (vs $13) and everyone
of every age receives a chocolate truffle at the end!
Tickets for the 3:15 performances are $30 (vs $40), or $20 for
under age 30 and are available at www.mooredaleconcerts.com, or
by calling Joanna at 416-922-3714 ext. 103 and identifying yourself
as a Mooredale member. All seating for both performances is
general admission.
Our 2014-15 season subscriptions go on sale at this
concert. We open our new season with Jupiter Symphony
Chamber Players from New York City on September 28
performing one of Beethoven’s greatest string masterpieces –
the Septet in Eb Major, Op. 20.
Mooredale Youth Orchestras also have special treats for their
performances Sunday June 1, 3:00pm at the magnificent Laidlaw
Hall of Upper
Canada College (200
Lonsdale Road). You
will hear the sounds
of a thunderstorm
and cannons giving
way to bird songs
and triumphal joy,
along with dancelike
rhythms!
Directed by
Dr. William Rowson, the Senior Orchestra performs Beethoven’s
picturesque Symphony No. 6 in F Major, Op. 68 (The Pastoral).
The most expansive of all Beethoven’s symphonies, the work was
described by the composer as “more the expression of feeling than
painting.”
Clare Carberry conducts the Intermediate Orchestra in Capriol
Suite by English composer Peter Warlock. The ever popular work
was inspired by dances from the Renaissance. Young players in
the Junior Orchestra begin the afternoon with a bang – playing
Tchaikovsky’s famous 1812 Overture, in an arrangement by Andrew
Dabczynski.
The Mooredale Youth Orchestras comprise over 110 young
players, age 6-20, performing in the three orchestras depending on
their playing level. They offer serious young musicians a chance to
prepare orchestral selections and perform them at a high standard
under the guidance of prominent musicians.
Tickets are $15; seniors and students, $10, and are available
only at the door. Information on the youth orchestras is available
at www.mooredaleconcerts.com.
