DIRECTOR’S NOTES
Dear Friends,
Mercy Neighborhood
Ministries (MNM) was
privileged to participate in
a $4.9 million Department
of Labor (DOL) grant as
part of the Health Careers
Collaborative (HCC)
between 2010 and 2013. In
the final report to the DOL,
MNM was sited extensively
for its role in accomplishing the deliverables of the grant and developing best
practices. Over the grant period, MNM consistently expanded its services
and leadership role to include:
Building Foundations for Life, a 12 week work readiness program
for long-term unemployed, at-risk women
KeyTrain program to improve reading for information, applied
math and locating information skills
ABLE/GED program for incumbent workers of HCC employer
partners and community job seekers

Mercy Neighborhood Ministries
recently took part in the Civic
Garden Center’s September 12
Flavors of the Neighborhoods
event. MNM Education Specialist
and Garden Coordinator Sue
Plummer and Jocelyn Coulter,
manager of MNM’s Julie Hanser
Memorial Garden, served tastings
of pesto, sage butter, and roasted
turnips grown in the Stanton
Avenue garden.
Harvested vegetables from the
garden are distributed monthly to
neighborhood residents who come
to MNM’s Food Pantry.
National Career Readiness Certificate assessments and testing
for all HCC partners
Gap assistance for students engaged in any of the HCC training
programs
Home Care Aide Training (HCAT), employment and retention
support
Leadership in the creation of a Long-term Care/Aging in Place
pathway and the addition of new employer partners in this field
to HCC
Representation of HCC on the Ohio Direct Service Worker
Initiative (ODSW).
Of the 2,349 individuals who
participated in some aspect of the grant
services, 712 (30%) entered through
MNM. The HCAT program, which was
operative for only half of the grant
period, represented 22 % of the
individuals who attained job skills
certification. This data is quite impressive
since the other partners include community
colleges, vocational training institutions,
and health systems.
MNM staff, board members, volunteers
and donors make all of this possible. I hope
this snapshot of the many ways MNM has contributed to the greater good of
our community makes you feel very proud to be a member of MNM’s team.
Blessings,

8th Annual Julie Hanser Golf Outing …
MNM Supporters Play for Good on a Great Day!
Though WCPO’s chief meteorologist
Steve Raleigh served as the honorary
chairman even he couldn’t have
ordered a more perfect day for this
year’s Julie Hanser Memorial Golf
Outing at the Wetherington Golf and
Country Club course in West Chester.
Under a cloudless blue sky and with
temperatures hovering in the low
70’s, everyone agreed it was “the
perfect day to play a little golf.”
After lunch was served in the clubhouse, the foursomes took to their
carts to begin their day of fun and
friendly competition while the
MNM staff set out raffle items and
prepared for the returning golfers.
Just before dinner, Steve Raleigh,
who played in the event with his
Channel 9 team, gathered the golfers
and guests around as he broadcast his
5:30 and 6:15 p.m. weather segments
from the clubhouse patio.
First place finishers were Duke
Realty’s Meredith Niemeyer,
Jon Burger, Jerry Royce and
Tim McElroy.
2013 marked the eighth year for
the golf outing which serves as a
major fundraising event for Mercy
Neighborhood Ministries. The outing is
named in honor of the late Julie
Hanser who served as president and
CEO of Mercy Healthcare and who
felt a deep concern for individuals
who were poor and went without
health care.
