Bulletin

Volume 5, Issue 9
Mrs. E’s E-News
From the Desk of Mr. Ebert…
Mrs. Ebert and I made a whirlwind trip to Indianapolis this past
weekend for a National Concert Band Festival site visit. We met
directors from across the country, stayed in downtown Indy at the
site hotel, visited Butler University’s Clowes Hall (our 2,100-seat
performance venue), plus we attend the BOA Grand Nationals
marching band championship at Lucas Oil Stadium. We’re pleased
to report that Florida’s Tarpon Springs edged out Oklahoma’s Broken Arrow for the National Championship, followed closely by Indiana powerhouses Avon and Carmel.
Go CAVS Football: Our Cavs smashed Ashbrook last Friday night,
despite the chilly weather. Report time for this Friday’s secondround playoff game is 6:30 pm. Dress warmly. No shorts allowed.
The Monroe Holiday Parade is this Sunday, November 23. The
Waxhaw Holiday Parade is Sunday, December 14. Both events are
required marching band activities...all students (winds, percussion &
guard) must attend. Every student must wear a Santa hat.
Oops! I inadvertently left Ryan Stewart off last week’s Tri-M new
members list.
Winterfest Students: MS—wear your concert polo, black pants,
black socks and black shoes. HS –wear your concert wear, please
check it out on Wednesday afterschool. Good news! Ryan Stewart
and Sameer Malik were added to Winterfest, bumping the number
of participating Cuthbertson students up to 27!
Fundraisers: Cuthbertson’s indoor Winterguard and
Percussion programs continue to grow in size every
year. Please consider ordering holiday greenery to
support the needs of these groups. Orders need to be
turned in on Friday. All items are direct from the good folks at Powers
Tree Farm in Ashe County, NC.
Holiday Bazaar: Speaking of the holidays, the Cuthbertson Holiday Bazaar returns on Saturday, December 13, with lots of new & familiar features! Santa will be there. We have included the poster with this newsletter. Please print it and distribute to your neighbors, your work and your
friends. Please send it out through your neighborhood enews.
MS Concert Update: The first middle school concert of the season is
coming up soon. Make plans now to join in the festivities on Tuesday,
December 16, starting at 7:30 pm in the CHS Auditorium. Every middle
school band student must have a concert polo and black pants, shoes &
socks. No exceptions.
Playing Test—6-12 grades the week after Thanksgiving for all students.
6th Drumline—tryouts this Friday in Class. Audition materials are
attached (page 9) and videos of the solos will be put on Youtube.

friends.
November 21. Orders will be available for pick-up the first week in December.

HORN SOCIETY OF THE CAROLINAS
The Horn Society of the Carolinas’ Student Horn Workshop will be held on Saturday, January 3, 2015, at Church at Charlotte,
2500 Carmel Road, Charlotte, NC 28226.
The workshop will be structured for middle and high school French Horn students to increase their knowledge, improve their
performance skills and provide an opportunity to play in small and large horn ensembles. Selected students will be provided an
opportunity to play in a master class demonstrating their audition-ready skills. The workshop will serve as timely preparation
for those students auditioning for All-District Bands.
Master classes and ensemble sessions will be conducted by area professional horn players and Horn Society of the Carolinas
members. A horn maintenance session will be presented.
At the end of the day, there will be performances by several ensembles drawn from workshop attendees, which is open to the
public and free-of-charge.
Online enrollment is available through our website. The cost is $30 per student, which includes lunch, T-shirt and a horn maintenance kit. Need-based financial assistance is available for a limited number of students. Directors and teachers are welcome
to attend the workshop without charge (directors and teachers must register, however, to receive lunch).
Don't miss out on this enriching experience.

Cuthbertson Band Booster Meeting Minutes
November 13, 2014
Executive Members Present: Todd Ebert – Band Director; Katie Ebert – Asst Band Director; Lloyd Spencer – President; Steve Hampson – 1st
VP; Kristen Trentham – Treasurer
Attendance: 22+ (approx.)
Meeting was called to order by President Lloyd Spencer. Booster Club meeting minutes from October 16, 2014 were asked to approve as
published in the newsletter/published on website. These approved minutes can also be found on the website.
Honor Bands: Winthrop Honor Band: 2 students going (Nov. 22nd); 27 students will be attending Winterfest (the weekend of Nov. 23rd).
Jack Stamp will be at Winterfest (this is in Savannah GA). To tie in a “historical aspect” to the trip, they will be eating at The Pirate House and
going on a Ghost Tour. Other highlights may include going to the beach and flea market.
Question: What time will they be returning from Winterfest? Ans: The Middle School concert is at 6:00. The High School Concern will follow.
We should be done around 8:00, with a return time of approx. midnight. (Look for a Remind101 for a more accurate return time.)
- High School Wind Ensemble (1st block) – featured performer at JanFest (University of GA) January 23, 2015; this is the Southeast’s biggest
honor band clinic; the band will be performing some of the same material as will be performed at National Concert Band Festival.
- Other Honor Band opportunities: USC (only 10, 11 & 12 graders can try-out for this one), UNCG, UNC-Wilmington, UGA etc. Some students
research on their own to find other Honor Bands they would like to try-out for. After the first of the year, District, County and All-State Bands.
Check newsletter for key dates, any questions contact Todd or Katie Ebert.
Remaining Marching Band Schedule: 11/23 – Monroe Christmas Parade (Mr. Ebert has requested if anyone has or could make a hippo costume with pink tutu. We have someone that has volunteered to wear it at the parade. Prize of $300 for best entry), 12/14 – Waxhaw Christmas
Parade (Marching Band Banquet at Cuthbertson High School after the Waxhaw Parade).
Question: When is “call time” for the parades? Ans: These times have not been decided at this point; however, the Monroe Parade starts at
2:00 (approx. call time 12:00). The Waxhaw Parade starts at 3:00.
Remaining Playoff Football Games: 1st Playoff games tomorrow (11/14/14). Please have your student wear several layers and hoodie under
their uniform and their gloves. They may bring a jacket and blanket as well.
Question: Why is the marching band not marching the show?
Ans: It is unsafe for the students to perform, with the tempo of the show being (164-168), and without practice, the stamina of the students and
remembering the drill may not be as good as it should be. We have been concentrating on preparing for concerts, meetings (like tonight)
and getting ready for our Winter Season (ie Winter Guard and Indoor Drum Line.)
- If we win the first playoff game tomorrow (11/14/14) the students attending Winthrop and Winterfest (and PASIC students) will be excused
from the playoff football game next Friday (11/21/14). However, ALL other marching band members will be required to attend.
- What if we win the first two playoff games? Yes, the next Friday (11/28/14) will be the day after Thanksgiving (we do not know if it will be
away or home). Mr. Ebert stated that if Mrs. Warr wants the marching band to be at the game. Then THE MARCHING BAND WILL BE THERE.
(Please do not start sending Mr. Ebert e-mails concerning this yet.)
High School Wind Ensemble (1st block) & High School Symphonic Band (3rd block): Your band student should be practicing EVERY day.
Homework is posted on the white board in the band room. If your student says they do not have “band homework”…… they do ….every
night.
Fundraising:
Yankee Candle and FUN Pasta orders due tomorrow 11/14/14 – both of these will fund student accounts for trips or fees.
- Holiday Bazaar – Dec. 13, 2014 9am – 2pm (at Cuthbertson High School); 70+ vendors already signed up to participate including our very
own Butt Burners BBQ. We will also have singing, music and performances from local schools and of course a Bake Sale.
Following the Booster Meeting – David Starnes (rep from Music for All and now with Western Carolina University) will be here to answer questions and discuss requirements/motivations for students re: National Concert Band Festival trip to Indianapolis – Wind Ensemble HS Band will
be participating in this Festival. (Music for All National Concert Band Festival; mid-March 2015 This is the highest honor available to high
school bands; Cuthbertson is only the 5th band in NC to ever go and the only band ever from Union or Mecklenburg counties (NC) to go National Festival will have 5 – 6 internationally known clinicians who will interact with the bands providing instruction and feedback (includes
John Mackie); other activities include musical performances by other bands and collegiate clinicians plus a recording that will be used to instruct other HS bands. )
Meeting adjourned.
