The angel Gabriel was sent from God
to a town of Galilee called Nazareth,
to a virgin betrothed to a man
named Joseph,
of the house of David,
and the virgin’s name was Mary.
And coming to her, he said,
“Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with you.”

from the
Pastor
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:
On this fourth and last Sunday of Advent, we once again hear
the story of the Annunciation of the Birth of Christ, made
known by a message of an angel, to the Virgin Mary. Glad
tidings of great joy! This announcement, which became flesh
by the total yes of Mary, would further be announced to the
shepherds abiding in the field. It would be a star that would
lead the strangers from the east, who we call astrologers or
wise men (Magi) or possibly kings, to the birth place of a
stable in Bethlehem. It would be Joseph, the protecting father
figure, who would believe in a message which came from a
dream, to be not afraid to take Mary as his wife and to believe
that all which was taking place was of God. This coming of
God, in the flesh of the Christ child, comes in messages, stars
and dreams. Such ways of knowing are indeed mysterious,
hidden, and truly quite personal to those who encounter the
Divine. Ways far other than the world of clever thinking,
power and wealth. Even Jesus, in his public teaching, which
was yet to happen, said that the things of God are hidden from
the clever and revealed to little ones, the lowly, and those who
yearn and seek God to come and reveal himself.
As we approach Christmas, we are reminded that empires
and people of power come and go. The great Emperor Caesar
Augustus, whose father was Julius Caesar, declared by the
ancients to be divine, and that we hear about in the Lucan
Gospel story of the Incarnation, are no more and their power
gone. So to, are Constantine, Charlemagne, Napoleon, Hitler
and Stalin. The empires of European Kings, totalitarian states
of the past century, are no more. Power, greed, control have a
moment on the stage of history and then fade into dust. Only
Christ, who appears as the humble son of a carpenter with
few possessions and nothing of earthly power, has remained
as the one who claims and seeks human hearts as his only
throne.
As it was in the events that surrounded the first coming of the
Christ, so it is today as we wait for His coming even now. For
He is seeking to find, in your hearts and mine, a new humble
heart like the first manger to make a home. The message is
that God is with us, Emmanuel! Have we prepared and are
we waiting and longing for the great appearance of our God
and savior Jesus Christ? He truly remains and abides in those
who still seek him. Can he count us among the hidden ones
who, in our dreams and prayers, perceive the message and the
person who, in time, first dwelt in the womb of Mary? The
one that Joseph trusted was of God. Are we proceeding in
haste like the shepherd to behold what God has done? Can
we follow mysterious signs of nature and the universe leading
us to a place of encounter with the Divine?
The ages and the mysterious plan of the Creator of the
universe continues to unfold. Can we wrap ourselves in so
vast a mystery? Can we see that it still comes with a simple
yes? A yes that leads to a seed, then a birth, then a disciple,
then a people and then a world truly redeemed and conformed
to the mind and heart of God? A God that loves us and is, in
fact, is Love? Let us all open our hearts to this King of Glory.
May he reign in us so that his Kingdom may come!
A blessed Christmas to you and to the whole world
When we let him live in our hearts we are called to become
heralds and makers of that reign of God. Can we bring peace?
Do we work for justice? Do we forgive and reconcile? Do
our talents and gifts just build us up and produce false security
and happiness? Can we allow the Holy Spirit, promised by
this Christ, to truly make us new once again this Christmas?
Love,
Fr. Greg

Christ,

PRAYER FOR PEACE
IN IRAQ
Lord,
the plight of our brothers and sisters
is deep and the suffering of Christians
is severe and frightening.
Therefore, we ask you Lord
to spare their lives, and to grant us all patience,
and courage to continue our witness to Christian values
with trust and hope.
Lord, peace is the foundation of life;
grant us the peace and stability that will enable us
to live with each other without fear and anxiety,
and with dignity and joy.
Glory be to you forever.

BLESSING OF FIGURES FROM YOUR HOME
NATIVITY SCENE
Saint Francis of Assisi introduced us to the Christmas
Crèche. At Greccio near Assisi, around the year 1220,
Francis celebrated Christmas by setting up the first
known presepio or crèche (nativity scene). His nativity
imagery reflected the scene found in traditional paintings.
He used real animals to create a living scene so that the
worshipers could contemplate the birth of the Child Jesus
in a direct way, making use of their senses, especially
sight. Thomas of Celano, a biographer of Saint Francis
and Saint Bonaventure both, tell how he used only a
straw–filled manger (feeding trough) set between a real
ox and donkey. According to Thomas, it was beautiful in
its simplicity, with the manger acting as the altar for the
Christmas Mass. This tradition has become a wonderful
spiritual part of most nativity scenes prominently
displayed in our homes and/or on our lawns.
St Frances de Chantal RC Church
It is also a Saint Frances de Chantal parish tradition
to bring one or more of our personal crèche figures to
a Christmas Mass to have them blessed as part of the
Christmas Mass celebration.
All are invited to bring in a figure(s) to any of our parish
Christmas Eve or Christmas Day Masses, and when
requested, hold them high so that they may be blessed
along with our Parish Crèche. Let us all join in this
profoundly beautiful tradition together and may the
blessings of the Infant Jesus remain upon you and yours
throughout this Christmas Season and the New Year.

SUNDAY’S WORD/BREAKING BREAD BOOKS
If you would like to have the Sunday readings in print,
copies of Sunday’s Word books are available at the
church doors for a small donation of $3.00 to help cover
our cost.
Please do not remove the Breaking Bread books from the
church. They are needed for masses and cost the parish
approximately $5 to replace each one that is removed.
If you need a Sunday’s Word/Breaking Bread book for
your ministry, please contact Cookie Reisert at 785-1309.
Thank You.

Dear St. Frances Parish Family,
It is with sincere gratitude that we can share the
news that we have reached our goal amount of
$127,300 in our annual Catholic Ministries Appeal

We will provide a final total once all pledges have
been paid.
Your support of this Appeal makes it possible
to serve God’s people here on Long Island as we
educate our children, support our seminarians and
deacon candidates, provide funds for Parish Social
Ministry, and assist our campus ministers in their
work with our young adults.
THANK YOU !!!!
