NECROLOGY
The Legend of the Holly
There is a legend that the holly
Wound’ round His head
And great drops of crimson blood
Against the green, they bled.
The holly mocked, as if a crown
Of laurel for a king;
Yet intertwined were cruel thorns
That pierced – a blood-let ring.
The sharp pain tore His tender brow
But that was only part; -Penetrating, O, so deep –
It broke His tender heart.
The Father said, ‘Forevermore
The holly tree shall bear
Crimson berries with the green
Like laid once in His hair.

And thorns would never form again
Upon the holly tree
But berries red, and prickly leaves
Would be for all to see.’
At Christmastide the wreaths are formed
Of holly green and red –
Reminder of what our dear Lord
Had wound ‘round His head.
