HAWAII OVERVIEW Hawaii, the Aloha State, was admitted to the union as the nation’s 50th state in 1959. Hawaii consists of eight major islands and 124 minor islands, which form a chain extending more than 1,600 miles across the mid-Pacific Ocean. The islands are either volcanic or small coral atolls, with an aggregated land area of 6,425 square miles and 750 miles of coastline. Hawaii is the only island with more than half of its land area sloping less than 10%, but large portions of its relatively level areas consist of undevelopable lava flows. Approximately 38% of Hawaii’s land is government owned and 23% is collectively held by six major private owners. Of the approximately 4.1 million acres of land in Hawaii, only 180,000 acres (4.5%) have been put to urban use. Hotel and resort uses encompass approximately 2,827 acres.
