2015 Quilter of Distinction — Darlene Hockaday
o celebrate the Festival of Quilts 20th Anniversary, we
are proud to have Darlene Hockaday as our Quilter of
Distinction. Darlene’s passion for quilting, and for the
Festival, has made her the perfect choice for this honour.
She’s been a volunteer at the Park for 25 years working
with both the Fall Fair and the Festival of Quilts. Each year
during the Festival, Darlene has gone above and beyond
to ensure the event ran smoothly and was more visually
stunning than the one before. This is our way of showing
our appreciation for all her hard work.
Darlene’s passion for quilting started over 25 years
ago. Her first projects involved piecing and quilting by hand.
From there, she made the transition to machine piecing
and quilting. She claims that the discovery of the rotary
cutter was the point of no return that got her hooked. This
stemmed an obsession with the textiles and tools available
to make her quilting enjoyable and creative. She joined a
small quilting group that met weekly at a local fabric store
and with that group there was no end to the ideas that have
kept her busy and inspired.
However, with all of the modern amenities available,
Darlene still has a deep appreciation for antique quilts
and specifically the workmanship
involved in their creation. Currently,
she’s working on a series of four
block hand appliqué quilts based
on antique quilts of the late 19th
century. Darlene’s favourite things
to work on include hand appliqué,
scrap quilts and fun patterns for
kids’ quilts.
This love for kids’ quilts sparked a passion in Darlene
to collaborate with the Chinook Guild of Fibre Arts to start
a successful team that makes quilts for sick kids. Road
trips to quilt shows, and being involved with the Knotty
Quilters allows Darlene to be involved in the community
and keeps her mind open for her next inspiration. She
feels that part of enjoying your craft includes the sharing
of ideas and camaraderie with others. Looking forward,
Darlene would like to work toward improving the quality
and variety of her machine quilting skills. No doubt there
is another masterpiece around the corner. Please join us
Saturday, May 23 at 2 p.m. for a special presentation for
Darlene Hockaday!

• “Dear Jane” and “Nearly Insane” •
During the American Civil War, a lady named Jane A. Stickle decided to create a sample quilt. She hand-sewed 225 blocks
together using 169 blocks, 52 triangles, 4 corner kites and 5,602 pieces of cloth. She completed it in 1863. She had made a
quilt that to this day, still leaves quilters in awe. Quilts in this style have been called “Dear Jane”.
“Nearly Insane” quilts were based on Salinda W. Rupp’s quilt of the 1870s. Ninety-three six-inch blocks with many
small pieces and complex blocks created these quilts. The original was on point and contained over 5,500 pieces—
a labour of love as well as a work of art.
Kathleen Bell, Calgary **First Festival Entry**
500 Nearly Insane Stars
I resisted the Nearly Insane quilt mostly because of the name.

Table runner: I like a challenge so started small. There doesn’t
seem to be a “how-to” to these blocks, but drafts only.

Darlene Hockaday
Heritage Park is honoured to have Darlene Hockaday as the Quilter of Distinction for the 20th Anniversary of the Festival of Quilts.
Darlene fits perfectly into all of the criteria the Festival looks for when selecting a recipient for the Quilter of Distinction. Her charity
work, ongoing commitment to volunteering in the community and with the Festival, and her beautiful quilts made Darlene an easy
choice for this honour. The collection of 23 pieces shown in this year’s display exhibit the passion and talent Darlene brings to the
quilting community. The Festival of Quilts committee are thrilled to share these pieces and celebrate the contributions Darlene has
made over the last 25 years.
Darlene Hockaday, Calgary
650 Camping Quilt
I wanted to make a quilt for my daughter’s camping
weekends. After piecing the centre section I found it needed
some snap so decided to add a border of appliqués. I
promptly cut out all the shapes and began the appliqué
process and after sewing only three units on discovered why
there are so few appliqué quilts done with flannel. Flannel is
challenging to sew and while I finished the quilt and am happy
with how it turned out, I won’t be doing anything like this
again. (62x80)
651 Cats On A Fence
I’m a sucker for cute just as much as the next gal, and when
I saw this quilt in a tiny two-inch photo in a magazine I had
to smile. And sometimes that’s the only reason you need to
make a quilt. (54x62)
652 Flying Geese
This quilt took over six years to finish. It was slow going—
making all those geese with those pesky points. It took
several tries to get the seaming consistent enough to make
all the blocks turn out the right size. (I have more than a
few blocks to put into placemats!) I’ll need at least a six
year break before I try another one of these. Quilted by Bev
Patkau, Mountain Rose Quilt Co. (64x74)
653 If Mama Ain’t Happy
Another folk wisdom quilt. Quilts with words are another of
my favourite quilts to make. There are no rules—the letters
are all free-pieced and are a ton of fun to make, easy-peasy.
(56x61)
654 It’s Raining Porridge
Story quilts are the perfect vehicle for illustrating personal
events or highlighting catch phrases and “isms”. When I came
across this old time saying in a novel I was reading, I knew it
had to be a quilt. I love working on story quilts—they are fun
and free-spirited; the possibilities are endless and they almost
always bring out a chuckle or two. (54x68)
655 Jack O Lantern
Determined to make a Hallowe’en quilt, I wanted something
not too cute or folksy. This quilt pattern from Fons and Porter
fit the bill nicely. Lots of fiddly pieces but worth it in the end.
(62x80)
656 Jill’s Quilt
A quilt for my daughter—it was started after she was born
and finished six years later, not a bad time frame for a
beginning quilter doing hand quilting. While I can now piece
quilts lickety-split, the hand quilting hasn’t changed—it still
takes me three years to do the hand quilting on a quilt.
(64x80)
657 Love My Dogs
I can’t resist a dog quilt and this pattern with the floppy
ears had me at the first woof. It was the perfect gift for my
grandson on his second birthday. (64x75)
658 Ocean Waves
I’m not a fan of piecing half square triangle units—while they
are simple to sew individually, put them all together and they
seem to develop a crowd mentality—they don’t want to sit
up straight and they often lose their points. But I love ocean
wave quilts, so had to abandon my cranky attitude toward
HST’s and just get it done. Well worth it—I can’t wait to start
another. (Can’t believe I said that!) Quilted by Bev Patkau,
Mountain Rose Quilt Co. (80x80)
659 Plaid Spider Web
One of my favourite quilts. It was easy to piece using the
strip piece method so it went together like a piece of cake.
Menfolk like this quilt—I guess it’s the plaid. (73x86)
660 Prairie Pinwheels
I love to reproduce antique quilts. Working from a picture, I
selected fabrics to closely resemble fabrics in the original
quilt. The piecing went well but the machine quilting was
fraught with issues and was a gentle reminder that after
quilting for 30 years, I still have lots to learn. (68x82)
661 Purple Split 9 Patch
Not a fan of the colour purple, this was an exercise geared to
learn to use all colours in quilting, whether you like it or not.
But I love this quilt for its sheer energy and drama—go figure!
Quilted by Judy Macri. (80x100)
662 Red and Yellow Baskets
A fan of Freddie Moran and Gwen Marston’s books on
collaborative quilting, the boldness of these big and beefy
baskets caught my eye. Yellow is a challenging colour to work
with—she often doesn’t play well in the sandbox—always
wants to be the drama queen. But she works well with the
reds in this quilt and I am delighted with the quilt. Definitely
one of my favourites. (74x76)
Heritage Park Historical Village  Festival of Quilts 2015
663 Red Tulips
These machine appliquéd tulips are bold and brassy on the
yellow background—a great combination. Fun to make except
for the clamshell machine quilting—very tedious—next time I’ll
leave the clamshells to the clams.
664 Rose Of Sharon
My first hand appliquéd project, made with poly/cotton fabrics
and polyester batting—definitely a challenge for a beginning
quilter, but I stuck with it, and I still smile when I see this quilt.
(76x82)
casually elegant. uniquely vintage. distinctly canadian.
665 Roses Appliqué
My second appliqué quilt and my first venture into drawing my
own patterns. I recall looking in magazines (no internet back
then) for quilt blocks I liked and then I would start drawing
them out. Layering pieces was definitely a challenge, and
somewhere along the way I learned that more hand quilting
definitely makes a more interesting quilt. (76x92)
666 Single Irish Chain
One of my first big quilts made when I first started quilting in
the 1980’s. The telltale giveaway is the poly/cotton fabric—
not a lot of selection for fabric back then. (80x95)
667Snowmen
A commercial pattern—these guys and gals were so
irresistible I had to make it. A perfect quilt to hang in the loft
during winter. (64x80)
668 Star In A Star
My guild regularly offers mystery quilt projects, but I never
participate—I like to know ahead of time how it’s going to turn
out. But when I saw the finished Star In A Star, I was hooked
and promptly made the one I like the best—the red one. Red
is my favourite colour. Quilted by Bev Patkau, Mountain Rose
Quilt Co. (66x66)
669 Ugly Duckling
This quilt was an exercise in “making do”. Out of the most
humble fabrics, and some that bordered on ugly, these blocks
were assembled from scraps at the bottom of the barrel—
fabrics that were just not “nice enough”. As I made the
blocks I labelled them ugly ducklings as I could not see any
redeeming features in any of them. But as the blocks became
a quilt, I saw them in a new light. While not the prettiest quilt,
it is indeed acceptable and I now enjoy it for the lessons
learned. What I’d like to know is—who bought all those ugly
fabrics in the first place? (72x84)
670 Up On The Housetop
A Christmas quilt. The reindeer are inspired by a Jan Patek
design, but her floating heads gave me the willies so when I
drew out the heads, I added bodies—so much nicer. It’s never
a bad idea to add your own interpretation. (56x62)
671 Wonky Houses
I love free piecing projects—no instructions and no rules, just
fly by the seat of your pants and see what happens. This was
so much fun to make. It grew from the intended small wall
quilt to a much bigger lap size. This is definitely on my “must
do that again” list. (54x82)
672 Woof Woof
One of several dog quilts I’ve made. There have been several
dogs in our family over the years all with different quirks and
personalities. I love making quilts for kids and these hand
drawn pooches were a joy to make. Easy, quick, and as much
fun as a box of puppies. (56x68)

Night Blooms Mystery Quilt
The Night Blooms Mystery Quilt was designed for the Calgary
Silver Thimble Quilters’ Guild by guild member, Janet Barker, of

was not revealed until the very end of the construction. The colours
chosen by the group members are wonderful and show how different
the same design can look, in the hands of a group of talented
