Bidlack The Greek philosopher Heraclitus, thought the essence of the individual, determines his experience. Character and the tone of the individual, resonates with the music of his destiny. It is the flaws of character that are tragic. Destiny can be viewed this way. That fates are not outside us but in the heavens, weaving and cutting the threads of our lives and in concert with our character. This is the root of the world view that good things happen to good people. Mister John Aderhold Cabbagetown would not be the dynamic neighborhood it is today, without Mr. John Aderhold. And the past couple weeks have been sad ones. John Aderhold slipped from the tender embrace of his family and passed away Wednesday, August 10, 2011.Cabbagetown gives all the strength, peace and love that God will allow to the entire Aderhold family. John Aderhold and The Stacks Way back in the early 1990’s, Atlanta targeted the then moth-balled Fulton Bag & Cotton Mill for demolition. A grass roots Cabbagetown effort came together to save the mill, but it was the visionary John Aderhold who stepped up in a major way and by 1997, he and his son Tom, had transformed a tragedy into a shining neighborhood upon a hill. As many of you know, The Stacks has endured a major fire in 1999, a tornado in 2008. In each instance, Mr. Aderhold and Tom were here within hours, providing leadership, insight, reassurance, muscle and unwavering resolution. Above all, what mattered most to Mr. Aderhold and his family was the fact that no one died or suffered major injuries during both catastrophes. Several tornado memories stand out among Stacks residents. The night of the tornado, Tom Aderhold met with as many residents as he could, providing as much information as possible. But it was his reassuring words “...we WILL rebuild starting tomorrow. and we will make our home even better than it was before.” He is a man of his word. And we have no doubt that John Aderhold looks down upon his son today with pride and love. More on page 3. We remember Mrs. Aderhold setting up shop in the Aderhold Properties offices, feeding the rescue crews and many of us. Love and marriage John Aderhold and Atlanta “You did WHAT?” Helen Aderhold asked her husband after he told her about the gift. “Where do you think you are going to get that much money?” Mr. Aderhold was a Georgia Tech graduate and that contributed to the funloving, but competitive, give-and-take with his wife. Mr. Aderhold helped shape Atlanta in several ways. He was instrumental in the development of the Georgia Dome and served as chairman of the Georgia World Congress Center. He was one of the pioneers who brought residential housing downtown when he renovated several historic downtown buildings, including Muse’s, which overlooks Woodruff Park. Mr. Aderhold also took on other challenges. His firm took over controlling interest of Underground Atlanta and helped stabilize the downtown district. In 1998 Aderhold gave his wife a $2.5 million gift. In actuality...the gift was given to Georgia State University to name its new classroom building after Mrs. Aderhold, a GSU graduate. It is now the Helen M. Aderhold Learning Center. Mr. and Mrs. Aderhold were married for more than half a century and through it all they were so wonderfully playful and loving with each other and those around them. How John Aderhold helped save The Falcons (and maybe The Braves) When they were celebrating one of their wedding anniversaries, Mr. Aderhold was asked how long they had been married. “Thirty-seven happy years. Out of 51, that’s not bad.” In 1984, The Falcons were hinting they would not renew their lease with the Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, and were contemplating moving elsewhere. And if The Falcons left, there was concern The Braves might follow. Mr. Aderhold stepped in and within weeks, he found himself at a meeting that was also attended by the governor. He asked if the state might help. He got an absolute zero response. Throughout his life, Mr. Aderhold always kept one thought in mind: What would help make Atlanta and Cabbagetown a better place. And then he did everything in his power to make it happen. Atlanta can never have too many leaders like John Aderhold. Unfortunately, they are all too few and far between. A few weeks later, the governor’s staff came to Mr. Aderhold to outline the parameters required IF the governor was to get involved. If this rescue mission were to move forward, the governor wanted more influential people involved. “I didn’t know all these folks, but I started calling,” Aderhold recounted. “The plan was to get the private sector to work with the state, to offset some of the costs.” For the initial financing, Aderhold made up a list of 10 people he would ask to invest $100,000 in the project. “The criteria was No.1, they had to have the money,” Aderhold related. “No.2, they had to be public spirited. Three, they had to be risk takers, because the chances were they wouldn’t get anything back.” “Someone said it would help if they were a little bit dumb,” Aderhold injected with a laugh. “We got the group together that evening. There were no Indians in that room, they were all chiefs. Everyone had lots of ideas.” Aderhold said, ‘Wait a minute, boys. This is not a decision-making group. All you’ve got to decide is whether you’re willing to risk $100,000. That’s the only decision you’ve got to make. And we’ll let you know if you win or lose,” By noon the next day, Aderhold had raised $1 million. But the dome stadium carried a $174.5 million price tag. Aderhold’s plan was to raise the private 70 percent through the leasing of suites and seats. “By October, the Falcons had lost several games. The 1986 Tax Act was in full bloom, Black Monday was right around the corner, and the NFL players were on strike. Those were pretty tough odds.” Aderhold went to the governor with another idea: Atlanta and Fulton County would impose a penny hotel tax increase to be dedicated to the dome project, and in January, the state would take over. In Jan.1989, the hotel tax passed the Gen. Assembly. In June both the city and county gave unanimous approval. And on Nov. 22, 1989, with Mr. Aderhold acting as master of ceremonies, ground was broken and construction of the Georgia Dome began. And now we have one less. Maria Saporta and John Dunn contributed mightily to this obituary. PAG E 4 S E PTE M B E R 2 0 1 1 SEABA UPDATES By Ashley McCartney Our networking soiree at Garden Hood was a huge success!
