For those new to the area, this is to
serve as an introduction to our area, a
sampling of what it has to offer, and an
invitation to get involved with its activities, businesses, schools, attractions and

WELCOME TO CHESTNUT HILL
Chestnut Hill, located in the northwestern corner of Philadelphia, is one
of the city’s most beautiful, affluent and
historic neighborhoods. Centered
around Germantown Avenue and
Bethlehem Pike, Chestnut Hill is surrounded by Fairmont Park and adjacent
to the Mt. Airy neighborhood as well as
the Montgomery County suburbs of
Oreland, Wyndmoor and Lafayette Hill.
Chestnut Hill is known for its walkable, village feel and for the great shopping and dining options along its
Belgian-block lined artery, Germantown
Avenue. The neighborhood was designated one of the top seven urban
enclaves in the USA by Forbes.com and
selected as a 2010 Distinctive
Destination by the National Trust for
Historic Preservation.
Chestnut Hill is the home to Chestnut
Hill College, Chestnut Hill Hospital, the
University of Pennsylvania’s Morris
Arboretum and the Woodmere Art
Museum as well as the Philadelphia
Cricket Club. Its housing stock ranges
from modest row houses to architectural
landmarks by Louis Kahn and Robert
Venturi.

100 unique shops and businesses,
most of them in convenient storefronts
clustered on Germantown Avenue and
Bethlehem Pike. Antiques, gifts and
clothes, banks and spas, two yarn
stores, two cigar stores, two independent toy stores, an old fashioned candy
store, a neighborhood co-op grocery,
a farmers’ market, a country market
and more than a few bakeries and
cheese shops.
From fast food to fine cuisine and
from neighborhood bars to BYOBs,
Chestnut Hill has something for everyone. There’s a McDonald’s and also
Mica, a new offshoot of Blackfish that
was recently named Philadelphia’s
best restaurant, and CinCin owned by
the owner of Yang Min, named
America’s best Chinese restaurant.
There are two coffee shops, a pretzel
place (this is Philadelphia after all)
and McNally’s (home of the famous
Schmitter) as well as Cake, a restaurant in a former greenhouse. There is
outdoor dining at the Chestnut Grille
and a farmer’s market with food
stands of many cuisines. Chestnut Hill
features no less than five bakeries.
On the northern end of Chestnut Hill
is the Morris Arboretum of the
University of Pennsylvania, a 92-acre,
Victorian landscape garden of winding paths, streams, flowers and special garden areas, featuring the new

of all ages as well as the Woodmere
Art Museum, a 19th century stone
mansion converted to a Philadelphiacentric museum and surrounding
grounds.
To the south is Fairmount Park, the
nation’s largest city park with scenic
trails for walking, biking and horseback riding.
There is ice skating at the
Wissahickon Skating Club and tennis,
golf and cricket at the Philadelphia
Cricket Club, or tennis at the Water
Tower Recreation Center.

Chestnut Hill has remained a vital
community since its annexation with
the City more than 150 years ago, by
controlling its destiny through strong
civic participation. In 1947, local residents established a formal organization, the Chestnut Hill Community
Association, dedicated to the social
and economic well-being of the neighborhood. In 1958, the CHCA started
publishing its own newspaper, the
Chestnut Hill Local.

WELCOME TO MOUNT AIRY
Mount Airy is just southeast of
Chestnut Hill and is bordered by
Fairmount Park to the south,
Germantown on the East and extending
up to Stenton Avenue on the north
which leads to West Oak Lane.
Originally named Cresheim Village,
part of the German Township, the area
was later named after the sprawling
summer estate of Chief Justice of
Pennsylvania, William Allen: Mount
Airy.
Much of modern Mount Airy was
developed in the late 19th and early
20th centuries, spreading out from
Germantown Avenue and two railroad
lines. Large three-story, gray-stone
Victorian, colonial revival, and Norman
and Cotswold-style houses and mansions, with stained glass windows and
slate roofs, are situated on many of the
area's tree-lined streets.
With a population of about 27,000,
Mount Airy is nationally famous as one
of America’s most diverse and successful city neighborhoods. Starting with the
1950’s and 60’s when neighbors banded together to stop block-busting and
urban flight, Mt. Airy has proudly and
continuously fostered harmony among
groups of differing races, religions and
sexual orientations. It was cited by
Oprah’s O Magazine and US News
and World Report for its successful
diversity and by CNNMoney in 2013
as one of America’s top 10 best big-city
neighborhoods.
As you would expect in Mt. Airy, the
dining options tend to be varied, informal and tempting. There are a couple
coffee houses and everything from a
diner and ice cream parlor in a real
trolley car to Indian, Italian, Mexican,
Chinese, soul food, pastries, and bistro
pub fare as well as wide selections of
craft beer; all in several short blocks on
or near Germantown Avenue.
Mount Airy is home to not one but
two independent bookstores, as well as
a variety of vintage clothing stores, boutiques and other shops as well as the
original Weavers Way co-op food store.
In the center of Mount Airy is the Art
Deco Sedgwick Theatre, which now
serves as the home to the Quintessence
Theatre Group.

Mt. Airy USA was founded in 1980,
by residents of East and West Mt. Airy
who had tired of blighted buildings on
Germantown Avenue, the community’s
business corridor. Driven by a desire to
revitalize this historic avenue, the dedicated residents established Mt. Airy
USA to solve these problems.

(BAM) launched in April 2012. BAM,
an initiative of Mt. Airy USA (MAUSA),
is managed by MAUSA’s dedicated

WELCOME TO SPRINGFIELD
TOWNSHIP
Springfield Township in Montgomery
County is adjacent to the Chestnut Hill
section of Philadelphia and is surrounded by Cheltenham, Upper Dublin,
Abington and Whitemarsh Townships. It
includes all of the villages of
Wyndmoor, Erdenheim, Flourtown and
Oreland and parts of the communities
of Lafayette Hill, Glenside, Laverock,
North Hills and Miquon.
The Springfield Township School
District includes Springfield High
School, Springfield Middle School, and
Enfield and Erdenheim Elementary
schools. Catholic Schools St. Genevieve
School and LaSalle College High
School for boys and Mount St. Joseph
Academy for girls are also in the township.
Primarily a residential community,
there are significant commercial areas
along Bethlehem Pike in Erdenheim and
Flourtown and smaller clusters in
Oreland and Wyndmoor.
Erdenheim, German for “Earthly
Home,” got its name from the nearby
Erdenheim Farm, established in 1765
and bought by George Widener in
1912 shortly after losing his father and
brother on the Titanic. Erdenheim features a robust commercial district on
Bethlehem Pike, extending northward
from the border of Chestnut Hill for several miles.
Flourtown, a neighborhood of about
4500, got its name from at least three
local mills once located there, using
water from the nearby Wissahickon
Creek.
Oreland dates back to the late
1600s when deposits of ore and limestone reserve gave rise to a kiln, and
William Penn built the Limekiln Pike,
one of the area’s first roads. Oreland
was also the location of Mistfield Farms,
George Washington’s headquarters during part of the Revolutionary War.

TOWNSHIP
Whitemarsh Township is a largely
residential suburban community in
southeastern Montgomery County, adjacent to the Andorra section of
Philadelphia and bordered by
Springfield, Dublin, and Plymouth
Townships and Conshohocken Borough,
and across the Schuylkill River from
Lower Merion Township.
Regionally, Whitemarsh is well

site located in the middle of the township, the Schuylkill River Trail is a biking
and pedestrian trail that currently
extends from Center City to Valley
Forge National Park.
Lafayette Hill draws its name from the
French General Marquis de Lafayette,
who stayed there during the American
Revolution. Prior to general decampment from Valley Forge in the spring of
1778, George Washington dispatched
an estimated 2200 troops under the
command of Marquis de Lafayette to
act as a defensive screen and to conduct reconnaissance of the British army,
which had garrisoned in Philadelphia
for the winter. The two forces had a
brief engagement at nearby Barren Hill.
Lafayette Hill is a generally affluent
area with many parks and nature
reserves. It is also home to a prominent
Jewish community. Additionally, it is a
commuter town, as many individuals
travel to Philadelphia for work everyday.
Lafayette Hill features a handful of
varied restaurants including Persian,
Mediterranean, deli, Italian and two
side-by-side Revolutionary-era buildings
refurbished into tempting restaurants,
Brittingham’s and Barren Hill Tavern
and Brewery.

Abington Art Center
Abington Art Center originated as the
Old York Road Art Guild, founded in
1939. In 1965, the Guild’s educational
programs were incorporated as a separate non-profit under the name
“Abington Art Center.” Several years
later, on Christmas Day 1969, respected rare book and print collector, Lessing
J. Rosenwald and his wife Edith, donated their 27-acre estate Alverthorpe
Manor to the Township of Abington as
a cultural and recreational gathering
place for the community.

It’s easy being green: Make the
most of the Wissahickon Creek
One of the best aspects of living in
Northwest Philadelphia and its suburbs
is the Wissahickon Park. The 21-mile
creek, which begins in Upper Gwynedd
Township, passes through some of the
best protected parkland in the country
as it rolls towards the Schuylkill River.
Locally, it is the heart of Wissahickon
Creek section of the city’s Fairmount
Park. In the nearby suburbs, it is a central feature of Ft. Washington State Park.
In between these parks is the Morris
Arboretum of the University of
Pennsylvania. All three natural areas
cover about half, if not more, of the
creek’s run.

Where: The Wissahickon Creek section of Fairmount Park is a 7-mile stretch
that runs from Northwestern Avenue,
through the neighborhoods of Chestnut
Hill, Mt. Airy, Roxborough, Germantown
and Manayunk where it meets the
Schuylkill River.
What to do: The park has trails for
nearly everything. There are walkers,
runners, cyclists and even regular horseback riders on Forbidden Drive, closed
to vehicular traffic It also is stocked by
the state and can be fished during fishing season.
How: The best way to get started is to
visit the Friends of the Wissahickon,

The Morris Arboretum of the
University of Pennsylvania
Where: The 92 acre arboretum at
100 E. Northwestern Ave. was created
from the former estate of John and Lydia
Morris at the northwestern-most corner
of the city. It may be only a small piece
of the overall Wissahickon Valley, but it
is one that must be visited.
What to do: The arboretum is more
than just a nice collection of trees. It’s

a seasonal model garden train installation. It is the site of the ever-popular
cherry blossom festival in the spring.

Fort Washington State Park
Where: Named for George
Washington’s encampment at the beginning of the winter in 1777 (just prior to
travelling to Valley Forge), the 493-acre
Fort Washington State Park surrounds
the Wissahickon as it passes through
Whitemarsh and Springfield townships
and into Plymouth Meeting.
What to do: Fort Washington State
Park has what you’d expect at a state
park: There are trails for running, walk-
ing and cycling. You can fish and have
picnics. There’s even a pretty good kids
playground in the park and there are
baseball fields. One of the main attraction in the park, however, is autumn
hawk watching in the Militia Hill section
of the park. It’s one of the best places to
observe raptor migrations in the area.
