Honesty: The Best Policy
By: Gianna Branca
6th grade, Norwood-Fontbonne Academy
The sixth amendment of our Constitution states, “In all criminal
prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public
trial, by an impartial jury of the state and district...” This means that
all people have the right to a fair, honest, public, and impartial trial.
Growing up with a judge for a father, I was always taught that honesty
was the best policy, but the idea of true fairness had never really
ingrained itself into my head until I was eleven years old.
It had been “bring your child to work” day and I had gone to witness my first trial ever. It had been a classic man-sells-and-buys-drugs
case, and from the beginning it had been very obvious that the man
was guilty, I knew it; he knew it; my dad knew it. So you can imagine
my surprise when my dad dropped all charges.
Later, when I asked my dad the reason he said, “I had to let him go
because while it was clear the man had done something wrong, he
hadn't done what he was accused of, and sending a man to jail for a
crime he didn't commit isn't fair and isn’t honest.” My dad then went
on to explain to me that while the man was clearly in possession of
drugs, he had never sold them and, therefore, would have gone to jail
for the wrong crime, facing a much worse punishment.
“Graces” (Kelly and Jones) by Grace McKeon, junior, Springside Chestnut Hill Academy
That day I learned a very important lesson: all people, big or small,
woman or man, black or white, guilty or not, deserve to be judged
fairly and honestly. Thanks to our Constitution, they are.

Edward Prunerhands
The story of a commonly ungentle man
By Dariya Brann, Sophie Gilbert, and Ana Cwietniewicz
6th grade, Norwood-Fontbonne Academy
While visiting the scarecrow exhibit at Morris Arboretum in Chestnut Hill, these students were intrigued by
“Edward Prunerhands”. It inspired them to write a parody of the infamous “Edward Scissorhands” story.
Not a soul visited the tree of the old botanist. It was far up a mountain, beyond the limits of the peaceful forest, a woodland where the leaves never fell. He was a genius and grew many plants that helped him do many
things, like bake carrot cookies. Unfortunately the plant scientist was quite lonely and knew he could never
be accepted in the seemingly peaceful forest.
The botanist, influenced by his mortality, decided to grow a man named Edward to whom he planned to pass
his knowledge. However, he didn’t have all the supplies he needed to grow Edward, and was left with garden
shears to use as Edward’s hands until he could find real ones. This seemed like a good idea to the botanist,
even though it literally made no sense.
The botanist loved Edward very much and worked hard to find him suitable hands. In spite of finding him
hands, he conveniently died as he was presenting them to Edward. This left Edward alone in the haunted
mansion atop the creepy hill, forever stuck with pruners for hands. Despite the fact that he could cut them
off with his other pruners. However, he wanted to be dramatic.
Back in the peaceful forest, Meggy, a Nova Makeup tree-to-tree saleswoman, was desperate for a sale of her
plant-based beauty products. After getting rejected by everyone in the neighborhood, Meggy thought it
would be a good idea to try the haunted mansion atop the creepy hill with the nice bushes. Inside she discovered a man, Edward, shrouded in shadows, warning her not to come near him. She blatantly ignored this
warning, taking Edward home to introduce him to her daughter, Mim.
After a “minor disagreement” with Mim’s boyfriend, a lot of blood, an angry mob, and a visit to jail, Edward
retreated back to the haunted mansion atop the creepy hill with the nice bushes. He then spent the rest of
forever cutting up giant mysteriously appearing trees into pretty shapes, providing autumn to the forest.

Inspiration for Phillies
Ethan B. Smith,3rd grade, SCH
Maybe next year the Phils can be like the Mets and make it to the
World Series but unlike the Mets in the way that they did not win it.
With a lot of great players the Phils should be able to win the World
Series. They should at least make it to the World Series.

“Who am I” is no longer asked when I,
Feeling smaller each passing day,
Denounce my own significance.
The pitying looks I receive,
From people who awkwardly try to
understand
My attempts at another language.
Their eyes make apologies while they
smile at me,
And I smile back, only more bitterly.
The frustration, the humiliation,
When I am at a loss for words.
To speak of that dream seems ridiculous.
I will mock myself first.
My identity is clear.
A muted radio,
Pouring stones from a teapot.

Look up, little miss, and see the stars
See the stories of your past
See the songs of the ages
See the flaws of the heroes
See the tears of humanity
Inscribed upon the heavens
Even in death stars are
Beautiful
Dangerous, too
Eradicating everything in its wake
Showering a galaxy in colors and light
Before fading....

Phillies
By Abigail Smith
My name is Abigail Smith. I am a 12
year old girl. I go to school at SCH
Academy. I am a 6th grader in my second year of Middle School. I play baseball and absolutely love the Phillies!
When my parents told me I could write
about the Phillies I was so excited, since
the season is over I am deprived of baseball. So anyway, to the topic. The
Phillies have had some rocky seasons
these past couple of years. This year
though, despite coming in last place, I
have Phaith that there is hope. I just
heard the best news ever! My favorite
player Ryan Howard is returning next
year! As well, Carlos Ruiz, will return
and he's also pretty cool. I know tons of
people think Ryan Howard is hopeless,
but I think differently. He can hit home
runs and when he was injured the teams
lineup practically died. As for Carlos,
well he hardly got to catch last season
and he could not hit. He said he will try
to improve over the offseason, hopefully
he does. Do keep in mind that Carlos
caught 4 no hitters. But that’s not the
real news. The Phillies are looking to
the Phuture with new front office members and young players they are truly giving me hope. I feel like I am mentioning
hope too much. Maybe that’s because I
just see so much hope! While old time
Dodgers fans can wait till next year, I
can not!

“The Smell of Autumn”
By: Campbell Donovan
By Norwood-Fontbonne Academy, 6th grade
Small leaves falling on the ground
Beautiful colors all around
Father rakes the leaves
He sings the words my soul shall keep
“Let flowers go and leaves fly away,
But always remember autumn this way
the colors, the smell, the happiness all around
Remember how beautiful it is right now”
K
I keep these words in my mind you see
As the leaves continue to fall off the tree
As the wind gets stronger and
Hot temperature no longer

Running inside to smell the pumpkin spice
And taking a piece of the pie, a tiny slice
And as this beautiful day comes to a close
We continue to hope it never snows
When a beautiful time comes like this you see
I never want it to change, never want to see
frozen trees
I want this time all year so we never forget
them
I want it always to be Autumn
