CONCISE BIOGRAPHY
I was born in 1957. I studied piano with Thom Bollen, composition with Hans Kox at
the Utrecht Conservatory, and orchestral conducting with Anton Kersjes at the
Maastricht Conservatory. From 1981 to 1990, I worked as a free lance pianist for the
orchestras and choir of the Dutch radio. Then I decided to dedicate myself entirely to
composing.
Since 1981, I have had the good fortune to receive a nearly continuous stream of
commissions. I composed an orchestral overture on the occasion of the opening of the
Enschede Music Centre in 1988 (which I later reworked into my Caucasian Epode for
wind orchestra); for the opening season of the Eindhoven Frits Philips Music Centre
(1992) I wrote the cantata "The Wedding of the Moon and Sun"; and I composed my
first violin concerto for the opening of the Tilburg Concert Hall, in 1996. Up till now,
I’ve composed three operas, two symphonies, two ballets, two string quartets and
many other works, among which many compositions for choir, for symphony
orchestra and for wind orchestra.
Several of my compositions for wind orchestra were allowed to serve as test pieces for
the concert department during World Music Contests WMC in Kerkrade: in 1995 my
Armenian Rhapsody Nr. 1 for symphonic wind orchestra, in 2001 A Night on Culbin
Sands, also for symphonic wind orchestra, and in 2009 Brass for fanfare orchestra. My
Vita Aeterna Variations for brass band were composed as a response to an invitation to
write the A section test piece for the 2012 European Brass Band Competition EBBC in
Rotterdam. During the WMC 2013, my opera-with-wind-orchestra The Emperor’s
New Clothes will be premiered.
Apart from my composing activities, I have been active as a pianist, as a jury member
of composition and piano contests and occasionally as a conductor of my own works. I
also give courses and lectures on composing and related topics and I teach basics of
composition at the Leopold Mozart Centre of the Augsburg University.
