Published June 27, 2016 American Meat Science Association News The American Meat Science Association (AMSA) fosters community and professional development among individuals who create and apply science to efficiently provide safe and high quality meat—defined as red meat (beef, pork, and lamb), poultry, fish/seafood, and meat from other managed species. Announcing the 2016–2017 Board of Directors AMSA’s New Consumer Website AMSA is pleased to announce that the 2016 Board is off to a great start under the charge of AMSA Board President Dr. Steve Goll, Tyson Foods Inc. Dr. Goll began his term as president at the conclusion of the AMSA 69th RMC in San Angelo, TX in June along with newly elected and current officers. Those beginning their term on the Board include President-elect Rhonda Miller, Professor at Texas A&M University, and Directors Amy Steward, Tyson Foods, Inc.; Rhonda Miller Dustin Boler, University of Illinois; and Texas A&M University Dale Woerner, Colorado State University. Board members continuing their terms include President Steve Goll; Past President Dr. Bucky Gwartney, USDA; Treasurer Steve Campano, Hawkins, Inc.; and Directors Sharon Beals, US Foods; Dr. Gretchen Mafi, Oklahoma State University; Dr. Robert Maddock, North Dakota State University; Dr. Andrew Milkowski, University of Wisconsin–Madison; Dr. Lauren Sammel; and Dan Schaefer, Cargill Beef. The AMSA Board looks forward to working in the coming year to create opportunities for our members to collaborate and excel in service to science and society. AMSA launched its new consumer website, TheMeatWeEat.com, earlier this year. This innovative site was created to provide accurate, fact-based information from U.S. meat scientists to help consumers make informed decisions regarding the meat their families enjoy. “TheMeatWeEat.com is the perfect avenue to relay the research of countless meat scientists into digestible information our consumers are looking for. Targeting our audience with relatable information, like industry trends, we can unveil science and facts about all proteins our consumers desire,” says David Hayden, Regional Sales Manager with JBT Corp. and industry advocate. TheMeatWeEat.com provides simplified site navigation, a variety of resources, and enhanced search capability, making it quick and easy for the visitor to find the answers they are seeking. Introducing the 2016–2017 AMSA Student Membership Board of Directors Morgan Neilson Oklahoma State University The AMSA student membership recently elected its 2016–2017 Student Board of Directors. President Morgan Neilson from the Oklahoma State University began her term at the conclusion of AMSA 69th RMC this past June. Joining Morgan on the board are newly elected Directors Judson Smith, Auburn University (East Director); Hope Voegele, University of Nebraska (Midwest Director); Devin Gredell, Colorado State University (West Director); Nick Hardcastle, Texas Tech University (South Director); Drew Cassens, Texas A&M University, (At- Large Director); and Carla Weissend, Colorado State University (At-Large Director). Bo Hutto from Texas Tech University, newly employed at Tyson Foods, Inc., will continue his term on the student board as Past President. This is an energetic and highly motivated group of individuals that will work closely with the AMSA membership to create new and exciting opportunities for the AMSA student members. doi:10.2527/af.2016-0036 52 Animal Frontiers Bo Hutto Tyson Foods Inc. Hallie Hutto and Joanna Swenson Join the AMSA Team Hallie Hutto and Joanna Swenson are assisting AMSA this summer as our communication and video production interns! The AMSA internship program is underwritten by the AMSA Educational Foundation John Forrest and F.C. Parrish Mentor Funds. Hallie Hutto is a junior agricultural communications major at Texas Tech University. As a communications major and an agriculture enthusiast, she Hallie Hutto has been able to combine her passion for Texas Tech University improving the future of agriculture to spread positive, uplifting messages about the agriculture industry. She loves collaborating with enthusiastic, forward-thinking leaders who know where they are heading. She was a member of the 2013 Texas Tech Wool Judging Team and spent the 2014 and 2015 academic school years studying, traveling and competing on the Texas Tech Meats Judging Team, increasing her knowledge in all aspects of agriculture and specifically the meat industry. She is very involved in the Texas Tech Block and Bridle Association where she is currently serving as the president. She is also currently president of the Texas Tech Meat Science Association. In her free time, she enjoys reading and spending time with her family and friends. 2015–2016 AMSA Calendar of Events 12−14 July: PORK 101—University of Guelph, Guelph, Ontario 14–19 August: ICoMST 2016—Bangkok, Thailand 10 September: Hormel National Barrow Show— Austin, MN Joanna Swenson is from Arvada, CO and will be a senior at Colorado State University (CSU), studying animal science and agricultural business. Currently, she is on the 2016 CSU Meat Judging Team as well as being involved on campus in the Block and Bridle club and the CSU Livestock Association. As a 2016 AMSA summer intern, she is excited to gain a broader viewpoint and deeper unJoanna Swenson derstanding of the meat industry while Colorado State University developing connections and advancing communication skills. Additionally, she is looking forward to going to RMC, Rockies games, and adventuring in the mountains this summer! AMSA is excited to have Joanna and Hallie join the team and help us with 2016 RMC. From designing award banners, to launching the app, to interacting on social media, Joanna and Hallie are gaining first-hand experience with all aspects of AMSA and RMC. They are also gaining insights, skills, and experience in online communication in the context of scientific education and outreach as we continue to generate resources and information for the AMSA consumer website TheMeatWeEat.com.
