From the Desk of Dr. Michael Wren…
A Storehouse Full
"Have you understood all these things?" "Yes," they told Him. "Therefore," He said to them, "every student of Scripture
instructed in the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who brings out of his storeroom what is new and what is
old," (Matthew 13:51-52).
Do you ever feel that you have given all that you have to give, that your storehouse is empty? Without any
question, all of us have moments exactly like this. But I suppose the more important question is this: what are you putting
in your storehouse? If you have not been filling your storehouse, you will have nothing to give when the need arises.
Surely you remember Aesop’s fable about the ant and the grasshopper. The grasshopper frittered away the
summer months enjoying the fair weather and abundant food, while the ants worked diligently. When winter came, the
grasshopper starved, while the ants comfortably waited out the barren months.
So are you storing the teachings of Scripture in the storehouse of your heart? Jesus is clear that the student of
Scripture has a storehouse full of biblical truth and wisdom to bring out when the occasion arises—whether we have
guests in our lives that need nourishment or because our own cupboard is bare. The task of the church is to give you the
resources to fill your storehouse. You will need it full.
If our storehouse is not full, where will people turn when the weather gets cold? My friends and fellow member of
Hephzibah Baptist Church, we have been given the richness of the gospel so that we can grow strong off of it and share in
its goodness with others. That is our mission, and it is what we are busy doing—in worship every Sunday, in Bible studies
and discipleship opportunities, in community wide events, in our mission trip to Ecuador, and in one on one conversation.
Make sure you are a part of what we are doing, and not neglecting the opportunity afforded by the sunshine. God’s word
is shining and the Spirit is moving. Let us devote ourselves to the Word and to the movement of the Spirit while we have
the opportunity.
