Wow-see page 4. It seems like many people shy away from submitting profiles for most issues. This month I received more than I could use, so we have a start for next issue. There are a lot of shows scheduled, as most of you are aware of. I have listed some that we had room for. Hope you can get your favorite Red to some shows. Has anyone ever thought of a Chapter 21 show sign? As Steve mentioned at the Spring meeting, the SDSU museum is looking for any info about women participating in the “Tractorette” program in 1942. Know anyone??? Would be an interesting story. If you happen to know of anyone, please contact Steve, myself or the SDSU Museum. I will be sending out more random invitations for you to send in a profile article. If you receive one, please consider sending it back. Remember the SD Chapter 21 web site. We did get the last newsletter posted, and the e-mail version of this one should be on later. Address below. Harold Boar gave the club a very interesting tour of the facilities after the meeting. Respectfully submitted, Richard Vasgaard, Secretary Our Winter Meeting at Rosenbauer Rushnore Roundup Page 4 WOW Lunch Actually the meeting was in Lyons, SD. However in this small eastern SD town of about 65, Lyons is Rosenbauer and Rosenbauer is Lyons. For those of you that missed the event, lets explain! First there was a very good meal, served in a nice venue, a good business meeting and Firetrucks!!! For those of you that haven’t heard of this place, they build Firetrucks. No, not the 65 Chevy painted red, with a tank, a couple of hoses and a small pump (although they could). Rosenbauer South Dakota, LLC is part of a group that builds firefighting trucks world wide and is the worlds largest firetruck manufacturer. At Lyons, they build Fire Trucks of all sizes, but a large portion are very big, state of the art, computer enhanced, multi axle fire fighting machines in many colors of the rainbow. And they are delivered to fire departments all over the world. As Harold Boer and two of his longtime employees gave us a tour of part of the plant; I think it is safe to say that many of us were in a state of awe. In the Shops there were many devices/tools/pieces of equipment large and small, old and state of the art with an interesting story about each. We were able to view many of these very complex firefighting machines in various states of completion. There was also the first Blue Firetruck this writer has seen. Again, a Big THANK YOU to Harold and his team for a very enjoyable day. Wish you all could have been there. Meeting Harold Boer tells his story and the story of Rosenbauer Building a Firetruck Jay Larson Delmont One Rosenbauer Shop The ONLY One Show MEET A MEMBER page 5 Keith Goehring, Volga SD I am not sure when we officially joined Chapter 21, probably 2 or 3 years before the Nat’l RPRU in Huron. I joined the club because of a life-long interest in “Red Equipment” and grew up with the majority of our farm equipment being IH. I bought my first Red tractors in the early 1980’s, but didn’t start restoring any until the early 2000’s. The first time the restored Super MTA made an appearance was at the 2005 Prairie Village Jamboree in Madison. That year IHC was the featured Ag equipment company. I grew up on a farm on the edge of Lowry, SD(16 miles NW of Hoven), and graduated from Selby High School in 1966. We raised purebred Duroc and Spotted Swine, showing them at the State Fair for many years. After high school I attended and graduated from SDSU in 1-1971 with a BS in Animal Science. After graduation from SDSU, I helped on the farm for 3.5 yrs. with my father and then began a 36 year career with Wells Fargo Bank, working in Mobridge, Madison, Sioux Falls & Brookings. Between Madison & S/F we spent 9 years in Lexington, Ne. In 2005 I bought a 180 acre farm near Nunda & Sinai, where we currently live. We moved a new house onto the farm and built a 42X80 Cleary for the shop and storing the collection. Another building was later added to house more of the collection. I still own the farmland that my family operated in Walworth Co. Retirement from the banking career happened on 11-30-11, having spent my entire career as an ag lender. I am married to my wife Irene, and have 5 children and 16 grandchildren. Our children all live close to I-29 from Sioux Falls to Kansas City. Most of them were in Huron for the Roundup and had a great time. My collection consists of : 1948 Cub, 1948 Super C, 1953 Super H, 1954 Super MTA, 1957 350 Utility, 1958 450, 1958 450 Propane, 1960 560, 1970 826 Hydro, 1972 1066 Hydro MFWD, 1972 1468 MFWD, IHC 3108 skidsteer, and a 730jd. We also have several pieces of other IH equipment. The next restoration will be the 450 Propane and a 100 manure spreader. My family and grandchildren enjoy riding and driving the tractors when they come to the farm, and my wife is generally supportive of my collecting IHC. My first tractor experience was driving a Regular Farmall and after that a H. Later we had a MD, a 560, and the last tractor was a 1968 806. I thought I died and went to Heaven when my father came home with that tractor. My favorite tractor is the MTA, the first one I restored. IH was on top of the world when they built that tractor, and was way ahead of the other farm equipment manufacturers at that time. See photos on page 7 Rushmore Roundup page 6 MEET A MEMBER Jack Mader, Madison, SD I currently live on the west side of Madison, SD. I am not sure how long I have been a member, but I certainly have enjoyed the club. I joined the club because of my interest in IH tractors and other IH equipment. I am currently a farmer and along with my son-in-law we operate a custom farming operation as well as farm for ourselves. My true farm love is putting up hay. Growing up on a farm, about age 7 I developed an interest in tractors and anything that had a motor. My Dad had a 41 IH tractor and I was running the tractor pulling a drag and a spring tooth harrow by the time I was 7. Today I own that same tractor that Dad owned. After high school, I worked in Madison as a mechanic for 13 years and opened Jack’s Service in the 1970’s. My love for anything mechanical didn’t stop at tractors, I also love cars. I built race cars in the 1960’s and 70’s. I have restored a 1955 Chevy. I started putting up hay in 1985, it was a way for me to relax. I worked for East River Electric for 25 years, retiring in 1997. I had been farming also pretty much full time in those years before retiring. I started collecting in 1995 and in 1996 I restored my first tractor, a W-9. I was “hooked” from that point on. Currently I am restoring a 1977 656 Hydro HI Crop and a 1970 656 with a 350 cid Chevy engine. In 2011 I built a building on the corner of my property in Madison to house my restored tractors. Problem, it is not big enough! My favorite memory about my tractor collection happened when my wife told me to build something special and unique. I found an old Allis Chalmers, a 1939 model in terrible shape! I completely restored this and turned it into a low rider, painted it Red and had it ready for the Jamboree at Prairie Village. My wife named it Allie, the low rider. I am pretty sure it has more pictures taken of it than any other at Prairie Village. Then in 2014 she told me that she didn’t think it was fair that the boys have all had tractors to drive and nothing for the girls, so early that spring I started the “Grandpa’s Girls” tractor. It is a 1942 B and painted PINK! We use it in parades, as well as promoting Breast Cancer Awareness. Both of these tractors have taken Best of Show at the SD State Fair. The pink tractor was also featured in the Steiner Tractor Parts catalog and also on the cover of the FASTLINE magazine. My wife is a quilter and has made several IH quilts to hang in our tractor building. While she sometimes looks at me with dismay when I purchase another tractor to restore, I try to remind her that she is a quilter! We both love our hobbies. My wife, Bev and I have 8 children, we have a blended family of 4 girls and 4 boys. We have been blessed with 21 grandchildren and one great grandchild. Our youngest son is the only “farmer” in the group, although he does have other jobs too. Our other 7 children are career people. Our oldest granddaughter and several of the grandsons have helped restore tractors that they drive in parades. We spend our winters in Az., my wife says it’s time for me to relax a few months. It gives me time to check the computer for the next unique project. This is the list of my restored tractors: 1939 B Allis, 1941 W-4, 1941 H, 1942 B(pink), 1943 H, 1947 Oliver Cletrack, 1951 W-9, 1951 Super C, 1952 Super C, 1953 Super W-6, 1953 Super M(2), 1954 Super H, 1954 Super MTA(2), 1954 Super MTAD, 1962 460, 1962 560LP, 1962 504, 1962 460 Utility, 1972 1066, 1972 1468, 1982 Hydo 84 If you are in Madison and have time, stop and talk tractors. See photos on page 7 Rushmore Roundup page 7 Keith & Irene Goehring at RPRU with some of their favorite things. At the Winter Meeting. There is money on the table??? Keith Goehring ready for a show. Jack Mader with his nice 560 LP The long Red line, according to Jack Mader. Jack Mader’s 1468 completed in 2015 MEET A MEMBER David Howard, Sioux Falls, SD Our family resides on the eastside of Sioux Falls, near Brandon, SD. My wife and daughter Megan are partners in a financial advisory business in S/F which I am a securities registered client representative. I also manage our family’s grape vineyard and winery, Dakota Falls Winery in Brandon since 1996. We also have a daughter, Molly who is taking classes with Black Hills State University and our youngest is Max, a sophomore at Brandon Valley High School. I am a fairly new IHCC member, under 5 years, but have spent my entire life around red and yellow and white. My great grandfather James A Howard and his brother, Leon D Howard purchased a hardware business in 1899 in Blunt, SD. They obtained an International Harvester contract in 1902 when IH was formed. My grandfather, Richard L Howard, son of James, joined Howard Bros. in 1931. He partnered with Leon until 1948 when Richard bought out Leon’s interest. In 1962 Richard A (Rick)Howard, my father, joined the firm as a partner. My grandfather passed in May 1996. My father continued the IH business until 1985 when IH was sold and the business continued with parts and short lines until Howard Bros. was closed on 12-31-96. I grew up pushing and operating IH lawn equipment in a custom yard care business, maintaining over 30 yards a summer which I did with my brothers; learning how to repair and keep running traded in IH mowers. I always remember spending time at the hardware store, doing chores, helping put away parts, listening to the “old timers” who always had an opinion, looking at each new IH equipment sales publication showcasing the new product which would arrive soon on our lots. Starting in middle school, I was old enough to start assembling chisel plows, planters, cultivators, swathers, drills etc., and helping the mechanics in the shops. Needless to say, we learned about how things worked and sometimes not. I continued to work there through high school and during the summers when I attended SDSU. After graduation and ROTC, my wife and I were both commissioned officers in the Army so we were away from SD, traveling the world, until we decided to raise our family back in SD. We moved back in 1995 and right away I knew that I wanted a Cub to take care of the yard. This started the collecting passion. I have a good number of the Cub Cadets and equipment which I still use some of them in the operation of our vineyards. I have not restored any equipment, just keep them running in original form, but I do have one that has been restored. This is my favorite, an original Cub Cadet which I believe by serial number was built Cont. Rushmore Roundup page 8 David Howard, cont. the same year I was born. I still have my first ride, a 1973 Scout II which I still run around town on occasion. I have operated a good deal of equipment but remember many hours on a “H” with a Farmhand loader which we used to set up equipment at the dealership and operating an IH 354 with a rear mower, mowing road ditches for the city and surrounding area. The picture of me in a 1975 IH pickup (see page 7) was the last IH pickup my grandfather owned. The picture is from the 2014 RPRU in Huron, which was a blast to attend! My brother and I with others, helped move an extensive number of vehicles, tractors and a host of other items from Dad’s (Ricks) collection in Blunt to the Roundup. I also made a trip to Pierre to bring Milt Oehllerking’s impressive 1927 IHC Six Speed Special tanker for the show, and another trip out west to bring in a 1906 Auto Wagon owned by Joe Thorne, which I believe was originally purchased new from Howard Bros. I look forward in the future to be able to become more involved with the club and collecting. I appreciate all of you who volunteer to run and support the organization. Thanks to all for your time and efforts! ___________________________________________ SPECIAL NOTICE Jim Brewers has the IHC Truck Books that were ordered in April. The books will be in Huron at the Spring Meeting. If you ordered one of these books, please be at the meeting to pick it up. If you are not able to attend, arrange for some one to pick it up for you. Thank you!!! _____________________________________ A Note from Tom Stowsand This is an early reminder that dues are due in September of each year. Please pay by or before the deadline. If National doesn’t receive moneys by December 1, the names are dropped from the roster and that has caused some problems in the past.
