New Brown Bag Lunch added
each month

With the success of the monthly brown bag lunch
series, we have decided to add a second event
each month.
Past surveys, as well as
conversations with a business’s, indicate that
effective marketing continues to be one of the
biggest challenges all businesses struggle with.
While we are continually approached with
opportunities for advertising, it can be difficult to
know where dollars are best spent. Together we
will explore and share what’s been working and
not working. Please plan to join us on the 4th
Tuesday of each month, beginning March 23rd at
noon in the Chamber’s Conference Room for
“Must-Do Marketing”.
Continuing with the “Talk Tech” theme we will
meet March 17th (3rd Wednesday) to look at free
and inexpensive ways to promote your business
or organization using video. The tools are likely
already in your hands. We’ll show you how it’s
working for the Chamber and how we want to
use it for your benefit.
Be sure to invite a friend or co-worker to join you
for either or both lunches. They’re FREE. Just
pick up lunch on the way. RSVP optional to
676-8521 or [email protected].

Snow Delay in delivering
the February newsletter
Early-bird registration rate extended for
Trade Show
Unfortunately several members
received their February newsletters
very late. The newsletters were all
mailed on February 2nd but according to the post office, they were
delayed due to the extreme
weather our region experienced this
past month. We want to assure you
that we work very hard to get the
newsletter out of our office as early
in the month as possible.
The deadline for the
pre-registration discount
for the Venango Works!
Trade Show has been
extended to March 31st.
We are looking forward to
a great show on Friday,
April 23, 2010 at the
Cranberry
Mall.
Exhibitors from across the county will be onsite to display their
products and services. Is your business looking for inexpensive
exposure? Do you need assistance in marketing? Our business-tobusiness trade show gives exhibitors the opportunity to grow your
clientele by just spending the day with us. If you need additional
information, please call us at (814) 676-8521, or email
[email protected].
The newsletter is always posted on
the Chamber’s website prior to
being mailed. The online addition is
in full color and includes all of the
inserts. Several members prefer to
only view the online addition, which
is great for the environment and
saves the chamber a little money.
We are always very happy to send
out the printed copy but if you
would prefer to only view the newsletter online, please call or email
the chamber.
TJ’s Car Care offers
specials through March
TJ's Car Care is offering discounts
until March 31st. We are offering

on your car. Bring in Spring with a
clean shiny car from TJ's Car Care.
We are located on the Seneca Hill
on Route 257 right above B&B
Glass, or give us a call at 676-6705
or toll free at 1-877-TJS-2188 that's
1-877-857-2188.
Adobe Photoshop classes available at
CS Technologies Plus
CS Technologies Plus and Identity Studio & Design will be offering
a two-part course on Photoshop on March 12th from 8:30am–
12:30pm, and March 19th from 8:30am-12:30pm. The total cost for
the 8-hour course is $169.00. Familiarity with Windows Operating
Systems is required.
This class will give the student general knowledge of Photoshop
CS4 Functions and each Function application. There will be multiple
areas of hands-on activities and projects. The class will outline a
complete work flow for digital images, including images on a film
card, saving structure, cropping, retouching, layering, image
enhancements and outputting to a printer. Each student will be
encouraged to bring up to three (3) images of their own work for
class projects. Since there will be multiple students, the speed at
which we progress through the materials will vary. This may allow
us to add more information or may limit it in certain areas.
For more information, visit CS Technologies Plus at 2803 State
Route 257, Seneca, PA 16346, call 814-677-2447, or email

national business averages.
Produced by Cortera™, the study showed chamber of
commerce members possess an average credit score of 629,
compared to a 557 average score for businesses at large. Such
scores – the payment behavior from which they are derived -play a significant role in attracting lines of credit and securing
favorable terms from lenders and suppliers.
"Chamber members have long been seen as responsible and
reliable members of their community," said Mick Fleming,
president and CEO of ACCE. "What this study indicates is that
the perception is right. From a credit standpoint, chamber
members on average are better businesses, and as a result they
have significant advantages in obtaining the funds they need. In
this economy and the tight credit environment we are
experiencing, that's especially important."
"The economic health of the entire supply chain is dependent
on the payment behavior of each of its stakeholders," said Jim
Swift, president and CEO of Cortera. "This study suggests that
chamber members are among the most dependable participants
in this ecosystem."
A complete copy of the study, which includes both the
aggregate findings, as well as the individual commercial credit
scores for each of the ten local chambers, is available on the
ACCE and Cortera website.

Census 2010: Partner with us
WHY IS THE CENSUS CONDUCTED?
• The U.S. Constitution requires a headcount of the
population be made every 10 years.
• The population totals will determine the number of seats
each state has in the House of Representatives.
• The totals affect the funding communities receive in
federal money each year : ~$400 Billion
HOW IS THE DATA USED?
The federal government uses population data to distribute
funding to:
• Title 1 Grants to Schools and Educational Facilities
• Head Start Programs / Child-care Centers
• WIC(Women, Infants, and Children) Food Grants
• Public Transportation
• Road Maintenance and Construction
• Elderly Programs
• Emergency Food and Shelter
• Empowerment Zones
Census data helps determine where jobs and job programs
are needed. It also helps potential homeowners research
median income, property values and other information
about a community.
IS IT CONFIDENTIAL?
• YES! Your answers are protected by law (Title 13 of U.S.
Code, Section 9).
• All answers are confidential. It is illegal for the Census
Bureau, or its employees, to share personal information
with any other agency, governmental
department or court of law.
• Census workers must pass security and employment
reference checks.
• Census Bureau employees are subject to a $250,000 fine
and/or 5 year prison term for

Child Development Centers improves lives with
Educational Improvement Tax Credit
Local businesses and industries: would you rather send your
taxes to Harrisburg or put this money to good use right here in
Venango County?
You can keep your tax dollars close to home when you take part
in Pennsylvania’s Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC)
program.
Here’s how the EITC program works: any C or S corporation or
partnership that must pay one or more of several taxes* may contribute to a scholarship organization, education
improvement organization, and/or pre-kindergarten scholarship organization. When the gift is given, the
company becomes eligible for a tax credit of 100 percent of the amount that is donated.
The EITC program benefits the donor company in two ways: the business gets credit for paying its taxes and it
contributes directly to the education of the community’s young people. One local organization that benefits
from the EITC program is Child Development Centers (CDC), which provides child care and/or early childhood
education for more than 600 infants, toddlers, preschool and school-age children at five centers in Franklin, Oil
City, Cranberry and Meadville.
This fiscal year more than 25 companies have made EITC contributions of almost $100,000 to CDC’s Guardian
Angel Scholarship Fund, which provides financial assistance to income-eligible families who enroll children at
CDC.
These gifts will cover tuition costs this year for more than 15 students – maybe more than 20 – in CDC’s
preschool program, according to CDC executive director Rina Nerlich.
“These companies are community-minded, and they’re helping provide a prekindergarten education for children
who otherwise might not get this opportunity,” Mrs. Nerlich says. Because of the EITC program, “the businesses
win, the children win, and local education wins.”
To find out how your company can write a check in support of education – instead of the state revenue
department – contact CDC or visit www.newpa.com and conduct a search for “Educational Improvement Tax
Credit.”

Business of the Year & Partner in Business Awards
presented at Venango Works! Trade Show
This year the chamber is beginning a new tradition. We will be presenting the
Business of the Year and the Partner in Business Awards at a mixer on Thursday,
April 22nd at The Movies at Cranberry, as a kick-off to the 2010 Venango Works
Trade Show. The mixer will be held from 5:00 until 7:00 PM and will also include
the presentation of Visionary Awards to chamber members who have opened a
new business this past year, relocated or opened an existing business under new
management. We invite you to come celebrate with us as we honor those who
are proving that “Venango Works”.
No school today! I don’t think
anyone was surprised by the
announcement this morning.
We had sufficient notice that
the snow was coming, allowing many people to prepare by
stocking up in groceries or
rescheduling meeting and
appointments yesterday. How
great is it that we can so easily
communicate with one
another so easily at times like
this.

Oil Heritage Festival unveils changes to parade, artisan craft festival
By now you’ve no doubt heard that there are several changes in
store for the 2010 Oil Heritage Festival. The biggest changes
includes a two-day Artisan & Fine Craft Festival to replace the
Arts & Crafts Show; and a 5:00 p.m. Parade instead of the
traditional noon step-off. These changes are being made in an
effort to draw high-quality artisan and crafters, as well as, allow
people an extra day to visit the artisan and craft festival.
The artisan and craft festival would take place on Friday, July
23rd from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. and Saturday, July 24th
from 8:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. The parade will begin promptly
at 5:00 p.m., and the route (West First Street to Seneca Street)
would remain the same. Parade-goers will still be able to setup
their chairs and blankets along the parade route, but should
wait until after 4:00 p.m. as to not interfere with the vendors tearing down booths.
The time change of the parade offers a number of additional benefits. The fireman’s 5K race will now be held on Saturday,
July 24th at 10:00 a.m., allowing plenty of time for parade participants to line up in the afternoon. With a full day of
activities, visitors can plan to arrive in Oil City and the morning and spend the entire day, without the “lull” in activities
from the past.
The admission fee of $1 that was collected in Justus Park last year has been added to the festival entertainment budget,
and additional bands have been secured for this year. The lineup is still being finalized, but headlining bands thus far
include Joe Grushecky and the Houserockers (formerly the Iron City Houserockers) and the Earthquakers.
How can your business or organization be involved in this year’s festival? The Parade theme is “Dancing Across the
Nations”, a theme that should provide plenty of inspiration for floats and groups of entertainers. There is no cost to
participate in the parade and it is a great way to get your name in front of thousands of people.
Would you be willing to send us a small group of staff members, suited in your businesses colors or T-shirts to assist with
one or more of our events. There is always room for more volunteers! Perhaps you’d like to host your own event within
the festival, like bringing back the bed races, Paddle, Peddle and Hoof or something completely new. Just contact the
chamber and we’ll put you into the schedule.
As Festival nears, event details will be added to the chamber’s website at www.oilheritagefestival.com. Facebook users
can now “become a fan” of the festival by searching “Oil Heritage Festival”. We’ve been posting videos and photos from
past festivals and getting plenty of comments about our new changes. This has proved to be another good way to share
what we’re up to. In three weeks the fan page has attracted nearly 1000 fans.
