HARVEY JOHNSON: A Triple Middle Passage
(January 17 – April 12, 2015)

Houston artist Harvey Johnson will return
home this winter with an exhibition opening
at AMSET, entitled Harvey Johnson: A Triple
Middle Passage. Born in Port Arthur in 1947,
Johnson is familiar with the southeast Texas
area and renders poetic imagery of his upbringing, African American culture, Negro spirituals, folklore and religious symbolism in his
art. This exhibition will feature over 30 works
on paper and paintings by Johnson and will be
a major solo exhibition, inspired by an earlier
feature of his work at The African American
Library at the Gregory School, Houston in
2013 (curated by Danielle Burns). Burns is the
guest curator of the AMSET exhibition, and
has worked with AMSET curatorial staff to
prepare for this show. In celebration of this
landmark exhibition, AMSET is publishing a
full color exhibition catalogue, including an
interview between Burns and Johnson, image Harvey Johnson, Humble Yo’self de Bell Done Ring,
2011, acrylic oil wash on canvas 41 1/2 x 32 3/4 in.,
highlights and an artist biography.

Johnson graduated from Texas Southern
University, Houston (1971) with a B.A. in Education, later receiving his M.F.A from Washington
State University in Pullman, Washington (1973). While at Texas Southern University (TSU), Johnson studied under Dr. John Biggers, who remained a mentor and friend for the duration of his
career (the two often collaborated on commissions). Following his studies, Johnson returned to
Houston where he accepted a post as Instructor of Art at TSU. He was a devoted artist and educator to the students of TSU for over thirty years (retired as Professor of Art in 2007). Johnson’s
career as an artist is lauded with numerous honors and awards; he was the recipient of a Ford
Foundation grant in 1977, traveled to Sierra Leone to research African-American Ancestral Art in
1990, and was recently acknowledged by city of Houston Mayor Annise Parker as an important,
founding artist of Houston (“Founding Artist Day Proclamation,” 2013).
This exhibition is generously funded, in part, by the Edaren Foundation, the City of Beaumont,
the Wesley W. Washburn, M.D. and Lulu L. Smith, M.D. Endowment Fund, the Texas Commission
on the Arts, the C. Homer and Edith Fuller Chambers Charitable Foundation, Sandra F. Clark and
Dr. Charles and Linda Foutz.
Caprice Pierucci: Dream State
(January 17 to April 12, 2015)

This winter, we welcome artist Caprice
Pierucci to AMSET with a solo exhibition of
her large-scale wood sculptures. Pierucci’s
sculptures interlock, interlace and dance
together, building a “tapestry” of wood
that resembles woven fabric. Before turning to wood, Caprice often worked in other
media and explored with fiber works. She
cites her late mother, renowned fiber artist
Louise Holeman Pierucci, as a key influence
on her career. Louise encouraged Caprice
to pursue a life as an artist, and the two
often collaborated on fiber pieces. The
sculptures presented in this exhibition evidence these formative influences and Caprice’s keen eye and facility with the medium of wood.
Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania,
Pierucci currently resides in Austin, Texas,
where she splits time between creating art
in her Austin studio and teaching Fibers at
Texas State University in San Marcos. She
received her B.F.A. from Carnegie-Mellon
University, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in
1983, later attending the School of Visual
Arts in New York (graduated with her
M.F.A. in 1989). Pierucci has received numerous awards throughout her career; she
was nominated for Austin’s “2010 Artist of
the Year 3D,” declared a winner in International Art Waves: Art and Design Competition in the Netherlands, and has exhibited
her art throughout Texas and the nation.

Café Arts
DIVIDING TIME: Works on Paper by Chris Troutman
On View: Through March 22, 2015
Opening this January, our Café Arts space will feature a selection of monumental charcoal
drawings by Chris Troutman, Assistant Professor of Art at Lamar University. Before moving to
Beaumont, Troutman lived in Japan, where he
returns annually, as well as Illinois, California,
Kentucky and Indiana. Much of his imagery references these geographic locales, exploring the
relationship between memory and pictorial expression. His pieces are large in scale and divided
into multiple sections, building a continuous narrative throughout his composition.
Born in Kansas City, Missouri and raised in
Peoria, Illinois, Troutman graduated from Bradley
University in 2003. He moved to Japan that same
year, where he and his wife opened a conversational English school. Upon his return to the
states, he received his graduate degree from California State University in 2008. He currently
teaches drawing at Lamar University, Beaumont,
Texas.

WILL-AMELIA STERNS PRICE: Mike’s Road to Taos
(April 25, 2015 – August 30, 2015)

This spring, AMSET will have the honor of presenting a retrospective exhibition of work by Will-Amelia Sterns Price.
Born in Denison, Texas in 1907, Sterns
Price eventually moved to Beaumont,
where she was a major figure in the
local art scene. She assisted in the
founding of the Beaumont Art Museum
(now AMSET), where she also taught
anatomy and life-painting classes. This
exhibition will feature a variety of
paintings and drawings from Stern
Price’s oeuvre, paying attention, in particular, to her time in Taos, New Mexico
where she briefly studied with renowned artist Walter Ufer. The range of
styles and subjects in this exhibition will
explore her movement from traditional,
conservative compositions to abstraction, and her exquisite versatility in both
areas, fluidly transitioning between
these realms throughout her career.

permanent collection, highlighting the diversity and
strength of this collection. The
works on view will focus on
fine and folk art created in the
19th century through present,
with a focus on the Texas
region. A full color catalogue
will be published to accompany this exhibition, highlighting AMSET’s collecting mission, focus, and objects acquired by the museum over
the years.

DOROTHY HOOD – Sounds From The Earth
DOROTHY HOOD,
Sounds From the Earth,

Dorothy Hood’s 1972 painting
entitled Sounds From the Earth is
a significant part of AMSET’s
permanent collection. This stellar, monumental work is one of
two Hood paintings in our permanent collection, which focuses on modern and contemporary
American art with an emphasis
on regional artists. This painting
is exemplary of Hood’s signature
period during the 1960s and
1970s, which is characterized by
large paintings with sweeping
waves of color that spread
throughout the composition,
often producing a rain-like effect
across the canvas creating an
atmospheric void. Shapes, fissures and cave-like motifs are
juxtaposed against Hood’s minimal backgrounds, giving a sense
of excitement and mystery to her works that often resemble cosmic motifs in their nonobjectivity. In addition to large-scale paintings, such as those in AMSET’s permanent collection,
Hood also created fascinating abstract collages and watercolors, as well as stunning drawings
that are at times more representational in nature, depicting organic, flora elements and otherworldly, surrealistic figures.
Born in Bryan, Texas in 1919, Hood studied art at the Rhode Island School of Design from 1937
-40, and the Art Students League in New York in 1941. Following these studies, she moved to
Mexico where she remained until 1961. While there, she met significant Mexican modernists
including José Clemente Orozco, who became a close friend, and married Velasco Maidana, a
Bolivian composer and conductor in Mexico City. In 1961, Hood and Maidana moved to Houston,
where Hood accepted a post as instructor at the Museum School at the Museum of Fine Arts,
Houston (she taught there until 1976). She lived in Houston for the remainder of her career,
where she was lauded with a solo exhibition of her drawings at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston 1975, and honored as the Artist of the Year by the Art League of Houston in 1984. Hood exhibited at many prestigious institutions throughout her career and died in Houston in 2000. Her
works are highly sought after by collectors of American art, in particular, those who focus their
collections on artists living and working in Texas. In addition to AMSET, her work is in numerous
public and private collections, including the Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston; Museum of
Fine Arts, Houston; the Art Museum of South Texas, Corpus Christi; Museum of Modern Art, New
York; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; and the National Gallery of Art, Washington,
D.C. Susie Kalil, art historian and independent curator, is currently working on a retrospective
exhibition and book featuring the life and art of Dorothy Hood with the Art Museum of South
Texas in Corpus Christi.
Part of our mission at AMSET is to support and acquire works by regional artists. Dorothy
Hood is one of many key artists from our region that is also well-known on a more national scale.
We depend on the generous support of our museum patrons and donors to assist in building our
collection, and are constantly looking to diversify and strengthen our growing permanent collection holdings. We continue to raise funds through annual gala auctions, grants and contributions.

hosting its fourth Vintage Affair wine tasting fundraiser
at 7:30 p.m., January 30, 2015. A Vintage Affair, chaired
by LeeAnn and Terry Garth, will include an opportunity
to sample a wide variety of fine red and white wines as
well as light appetizers, chocolate and cheese. A chance
to win artsy wine baskets and other wine related items
will also be part of the fun. Start your 2015 out right by
purchasing your Affair tickets today. It could also be a
special treat to get that Valentines romance moving in

your tickets while supplies last, because we will be Rollin it Back
for 2015! That’s right! This year, your odds to win are better than
they’ve been in a l-o-n-g time. We’re only selling 450 tickets as
opposed to the usual 500! This increases your chances of winning
that big pot of gold waiting at the end of that AMSET Rollin it
Back rainbow. Once the word gets out, tickets will be sellin like
hotcakes.
This fabulous fundraiser will be chaired by the creative and
talented gold-roller herself, Melanie Dishman. It will be held at
6:30 p.m., Thursday, March 5, 2015 at the Art Museum of Southeast Texas.
Go for the Gold is a reverse drawing and a great opportunity
to win $10,000 in sumptuous, glittering rollin gold coins. The
$100 entry ticket is not only a chance to be a big winner, but it
also admits two people into the art museum for a rollin evening
of entertainment, watching the suspenseful reverse drawing with

Tree Lighting 2014
The Annual Holiday Tree Lighting was a
great success this year! Kids of all ages and
their parents had fun frosting cookies, making
pipe cleaner ladders, greeting cards, spin art
ornaments, and writing personal letters to
Santa. The Clifton J. Ozen High School Choir
provided the festive holiday music. The Post
Office operated their giant mailbox to receive
the letters addressed to Santa.
This year’s Annual Holiday Tree Lighting
was made special by all of the participating museums and organizations including the Art
Museum of Southeast Texas, Fire Museum of Texas, Texas Energy Museum, Edison Museum,
Southeast Texas Arts Council, Tyrrell Library, Beaumont Convention & Visitors Bureau, McFaddin
-Ward House Museum, and Ben J. Rogers Regional Visitor Center. Special thanks to Mobil
Federal Credit Union and Flint Hills Resources for their sponsorship.
Gingerbread Workshop 2014
Icing, gingerbread, white chocolate, candy canes,
orange slices, gum drops, mints…
If it sounds like AMSET has grown a sweet tooth,
we have! We held our bi-annual Gingerbread House
Workshop on Saturday, December 7th.
Paige Neyland of Michaels Arts & Craft Store in
Beaumont led this tasty gingerbread
adventure.
The twelve Gingerbread House Workshop
participants displayed their holiday spirit by
rolling up their sleeves and creating a gingerbread
masterpiece. AMSET did permit finger licking - as if we could have stopped it!
Protégé 2015
Competition and Exhibition
In its 29th year, the Protégé Competition and Exhibition was created specifically to encourage
graduating high school seniors to begin taking the steps necessary to become part of the world
of art.
This year's Protégé juror is Ann Wood. Ann Wood currently lives and creates art in Galveston,
Texas. Wood is an Adjunct Professor of Art at Galveston College. Wood graduated in 1996 from
California State University, Chico with a BFA in Art and an emphasis on painting. She later moved
to Texas, where she received her MFA from the University of Texas at San Antonio in 1999.
Wood has exhibited in solo and group shows throughout Texas, with recent exhibitions in Houston and Austin.
This competition allows students to begin learning about the evaluation processes used in the
art world. Prizes for winners include scholarships to Lamar University's Art Department and gift
certificates for art supplies.

If you know a budding young artist, counsel him or her to prepare to enter this school year’s
Annual Protégé Competition and Exhibition. Entries will be accepted from January 6 - 20, 2015
and he or she may enter any work created after August 2014; he/she need not be part of an organized art class to enter.

Reception and Awards Ceremony on February 26, 2015 from 6 - 7:30pm. The Protégé Exhibition
