LARK MISSION STATEMENT
LARK Musical Conservatory has stood as a cultural beacon within the Armenian community of Los
Angeles since 1989, when a goal-oriented group of Armenian-American musicians, teachers, and
community members, with an advocacy and appreciation for the arts, came together to turn their
budding notions about educating the future generation into a reality. Their love for the proliferation
of the Armenian musical arts metamorphosed into an organization that combined the Armenian
musical tradition with those of American culture and Western classical music, where children were
to learn the music of Mozart and Beethoven alongside that of Komitas and Khachaturian. With this
as its curricular foundation, LARK has given its students a complete understanding of this culturally
responsive and wholly expressive art form. At LARK, music is studied, researched, created, pubpub
b
lished, experienced, and performed by individuals of all ages who feel not only the art of music, but
pride in culture and heritage as well.

Komitas once said, “My main preoccupation is
to embolden students to become devotees and
scholars of their nation’s music, to spread
amongst their people the spirit of Armenian
music, in order to ensure the embodiment of
the nation’s music within the people.”

Today, Komitas’ call to action has become a
reality at LARK Conservatory. LARK is a shining beacon in the culture of modern music,
with a high level of aestheticism and professionalism, developing a wholesome image of
cultural enhancement.

In its seventeen-year history, through the efforts
of its highly trained music experts and teachers, LARK Conservatory has become a center
where members of the younger generation can
connect to their cultural heritage and learn how
to strengthen the spirit of their Armenian
lineage. They are also exposed to universal
philosophies regarding the power of music.

Alongside its musicianship and performance
classes, LARK Conservatory offers one-onone instruction, including instrumentation and
theory courses, in its after-school and weekend
programs. The objective is not only to impart
to students the principal of approaching life
with a sense of deep purpose, but to underscore
the significance of critical thinking and analysis, and to provide a healthy dose of zeal created
through musical expression. In this spirit,
guided by Komitas’ convictions, the LARK
Conservatory expresses heartfelt gratitude to
its students, teachers, parents, community
supporters, and volunteers.
