FLOWER SPECIES OF NAMAKWA NORTHERN CAPE West Coast & Namakwa Map Majestically stretching over 360 000 square kilometres from the world-renowned Kalahari Desert in the north to the arid plains of the Karoo in the South, the Northern Cape Province of South Africa offers visitors an unforgettable holiday experience. For nature lovers, the Northern Cape offers an abundance of nature and outdoor experiences with its incredible natural beauty and versatility. The province’s magnifying appeal is steeped in its rich archaeological heritage tracing ancient tribes like the San (Bushmen), Nama and Griqua and pays homage to its diverse history. The province is divided into five regions, namely Diamond Fields, Kalahari, Green Kalahari, Namakwa and Karoo. The Namakwa region especially offers a rich and diverse tourism experience. Visitors can immerse themselves in the colourful histories of towns deeply rooted in a proud mining tradition. Take an unforgettable raft or canoe trip through imposing canyons on the meandering waterways of Namakwa’s artery of life, the Orange River. Or take your 4x4 on an adventure in the haunting moonscapes of the stunningly barren, saw-toothed mountains of the untamed |Ai|Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park. Alternatively, wrap yourself in an aura of meditation and escape to the timeless serenity of a solitary, palm-fringed cathedral at Pella. Or, as the copper sun sets on Port Nolloth’s diamond sea and the last, lonely lines are reeled in, indulge in a crayfish barbecue (braai). NAMAKWA Most flowers enthusiasts’ dream is to experience Namakwa’s spring display. This unspoiled expanse of open spaces is regarded as one of the world’s botanical wonders. The first flowers appear in July along the drier coastal strip and in the north of the region and later flowering displays can be found until early October at the higher and cooler altitudes. Labelled by visitors as ‘the greatest flower show on earth’, Namakwa offers blazing Persian carpets of colourful daisies and vegetation rich in bulbs, perennial shrubs and vygies – an estimated 3000 + plant species with more than 50% unique to the area. Namakwa is part of the Succulent Karoo and contains more than 6 000 plant species, 250 species of birds, 78 species of mammals, 132 species of reptiles and amphibians and an unknown number of insects, making it the world's richest bulb flora arid region and the most diverse, arid environment. More than 40% of these species are found nowhere else on Earth. Many byroads traverse the region and a large variation of landscapes and colour combinations can be found within short distances. Be sure not to miss the Goegap Nature Reserve (Springbok), the Namaqualand National Park (Kamieskroon) and the ‘bulb capital’ Niewoudtville. The best way to discover the small jewels sheltering between the taller plants is on foot and it offers keen photographers amazingly rewarding experiences. Before setting out on your floral experience do contact the local tourism bureaux for up-to-date flower news or visit www.experiencenortherncape.com flower updates. Enjoy the cultural interaction with the Nama people whilst taking a donkey ride in Eksteenfontein or staying over in the community-run Kookfontein rondavels near Steinkopf. Experience the mystery and wonder of the star-studded night skies at the Southern African Astronomical Observatory in Sutherland where the clear Karoo sky shows millions of stars. Dimorphotheca pluvialis (Namakwa Daisy) These mass flowering daisies can be confused with snow all along the Namakwa region. This proud flower can be found growing abundantly in the Tankwa National Park during springtime. Colchicum sp. (Cup-and-Saucer) These low-lying flowers can be found north of the Cape Floral Region towards Namakwa. The roadsides and wetlands are filled with the last patches of Arum Lillies and white Rain Daisies herald the arrival of spring, jostling with tiny yellow Button Daisies, Blue Flax and pink Nemesias. Look out for the daintier, sometimes hidden Winecups, Sparaxis, Lechenalia and Babiana flowers. Good rains will ensure that the carpets of flowers last well into October and multi-coloured Vygies, Watsonias and fields of orange and yellow ‘Stinkkruid” will await you too. The amount and timing of the winter rains and winds has a crucial influence on the flowers. That’s why each year has a different outcome. The flowers tend to bloom up north first, and as the season continues, they bloom further and further south.
