SOUTH AFRICAN WOMEN’S SENIOR NATIONAL TEAM Women’s Football Tournament: 3 – 19 August 2016 Belo Horizonte, Brasilia, Manaus, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, São Paulo, BRAZIL MEDIA GUIDE S O U T H A F R I C A N F O OT B A L L A S S O C I AT I O N G A M E S O F T H E X X X I O LY M P I A D LONDON 2012: GAMES OF THE XXX OLYMPIAD MESSAGE FROM DR DANNY JORDAAN Banyana Banyana’s Maiden Appearance President of the South African Football Association Banyana Banyana made their Women’s football in South Africa has seen significant growth in terms of support, and this is mainly due to the success we see on the field with Banyana Banyana, our Senior Women’s National Team. That success has been confirmed by the squad’s second qualification in a row for the Olympic Games – a major achievement indeed. The last time out in London in 2012 we didn’t do so well, but we learnt a lot from the excursion – it was also our first participation in the world’s biggest multi-sport event. maiden appearance at the Olympic Games in London four years ago, losing 4 – 1 to Sweden and 3 – 0 to Canada This time around I believe we are stronger, wiser, and better equipped after great preparations, which included playing top nations like the Netherlands as well as the Olympic and World Champions USA. We are fortunate that we have players with a lot of passion, who know what they want – mainly because an extremely professional coach leads them. The decision to retain Vera Pauw after the disappointment of not qualifying for the last World Cup is paying off. The confidence in the team has grown tenfold. We are also not naive and are realistic that it will not be an easy task for Banyana Banyana in Rio, but we are confident they will give their best – after all, it’s a daunting mission to take on Brazil, China and Sweden. The most important thing is that even in defeat, you must be able to hold your head up high and say ‘I did the best I could.’ We are going to Brazil and intend to leave a mark – a positive one at that. Let them talk about us long after the tournament is over. before drawing 0 – 0 with the then world champions Japan. Right: South Africa’s lone goal in the tournament came from a sensational 45 meter strike delivered from the centre circle by South Africa’s all time leading goal scorer, the now retired Portia ‘Bashin’ So let me take this opportunity to wish the South African Senior Women’s National Team, otherwise known as Banyana Banyana, all the best at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. Just by being one of the 12 countries in the world to qualify makes you winners already. Some of our players are here for the first time, while some have been before, but I would like to say to all of you: Enjoy the experience, make good use of it and let us all be proud of your performance. We know you have it in you to do so. Modise. Below: Refiloe Jane takes aim during the same match against Sweden played in Coventry. MESSAGE FROM MS VERA PAUW Head Coach of Banyana Banyana, the Women’s Senior National Team The qualification for the Olympic Games in Rio is something not one of us will ever forget. Knocking out the African powerhouse Equatorial Guinea came from our absolute will to go to the Olympics. On that day in front of 40,000 away spectators, we managed to quiet them down and then even had the crowd applauding the spirit that the team showed. We are in general not the tallest players, so we really need each other to be able to stand against the physical force of the top opposition in international women’s football these days. In addition to this we do not have the experience that the teams at the top level are exposed to because we are literally so physically far away from everybody that it is a logistical challenge to make matches happen. Dutch International: Defender 1983 – 1998 (89 caps, 2 goals) Technical Director/National Coach: Scotland (1998 – 2004) Netherlands (2004 – 2010) Russia (2010 – 2012) South Africa (2014 – ) Therefore, we must now use this stage in Brazil to really show the world what we are capable of. After the Olympics we want to be remembered and considered as a team that can give any team a game. We will change perceptions; we will no longer be ignored and we will soon see that more and more opponents are keen and eager to play against South Africa. The world will know that we can host top countries in our beautiful South Africa at fantastic facilities and offer a positive game to any opponent. Moreover, we will know that we can travel anywhere in the world to improve ourselves and we can earn contracts for these highly talented players. The Olympics will change our lives but also those of thousands of girls all over South Africa, because the Games bring hope of a different life which is achievable with talent, hard work and determination to reach an international career. When that happens, our mission will have been accomplished. MESSAGE FROM MR ELTON FORTUIN VP: Sasol Group Communication and Brand Management In 2009 Sasol extended its longstanding partnership with the South African Football Association (SAFA) by focusing on the development of women’s football in the country. This led to Sasol becoming the first sponsor of the Women’s Senior National Team, Sasol Banyana Banyana, and the establishment of the Sasol League. Today, the Sasol League provides a robust platform for female football players to develop and showcase their skills to an audience of national coaches and talent scouts. The League comprises 144 teams from across the nine provinces, featuring more than 2,800 players, who have the opportunity to participate in regular competitive football throughout the year. Sasol Banyana Banyana have been an even greater success. Looking back over the past seven years, it has been incredible to witness the milestones the team has achieved. Not only has the team qualified for its second consecutive Olympic Games, after London 2012, the team also competed in the 2010, 2012 and 2014 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations, and will do so again this December. To honour the players, Sasol launched the #CelebratingHeroes Campaign during May 2016. The campaign is premised on recognising the hard work, diligence and passion that Sasol Banyana Banyana display on and off the field, as they fly the flag for South Africa and its citizens. The campaign also served as a rallying call to inspire South Africans to support the team and the players, as they prepared for these Olympic Games taking place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. At this Olympiad, South Africa, Sweden, Colombia and Germany are the only countries who have both their men’s and women’s national teams qualifying to compete – a rare feat in modern football. Sasol is incredibly proud of Sasol Banyana Banyana and the impact our partnership with SAFA has made in enabling the team to grow in strength, skill and athleticism, as well as to participate in football tournaments and to play against top national teams around the globe. We know that our heroes will represent South Africa well in the world’s biggest sporting event. Sasol. Powering Women’s Football. The Netherlands was the first non-African team to play against Banyana Banyana in February 2000, winning 2 – 0. Debuting in 2005, defender Janine van Wyk has captained Banyana Banyana since 2013 and in 2016 became South Africa’s most capped male or female player standing on 131 caps. She runs her own school league for girls and is player/ coach of her own club JvW Ladies that plays in the SASOL League, the country’s premier women’s league. Noko Matlou debuted for Banyana Banyana in 2007 and one year later was named the CAF Women’s Player of the Year. The first South African winner, male or female, of this prestigious CAF Award scored six goals at the 2008 African Women’s Championship in Equatorial Guinea to finish joint top scorer and help Banyana Banyana to regain second place in Africa. Now playing her football for Samford University in Alabama, Jermaine Seoposenwe has risen through the ranks of South Africa’s national teams. She scored against South Korea and Germany at the FIFA U17 World Cup in Trinidad & Tobago, was named 2010 Young Player of the Year and was selected for the senior side in 2012 but injury kept her out of the Olympics. Linda Motlhalo is an 18-yearold matric student enrolled at the High Performance Centre in Pretoria. She has scored at both the U-17 and U-19 levels against Nigeria home and away. Coming on this March as a substitute for her Banyana Banyana debut, this midfielder scored against Cameroon, and added a second goal when she earned her first start a few days later against Cameroon.
