he website visitingnewengland.com featured a
story that included the following quote: “New
England’s coziest restaurant - The Vanilla Bean
Café is anything but vanilla. ...If it was a house, we’d
buy it. If it was an inn, we’d stay an extra night. If it
was office space, we’d work overtime. Perhaps that
last sentiment is a stretch, but the Vanilla Bean Café
is one of those places you simply don’t want to leave.
...We felt so much at home that we could have fallen
asleep right in the dining chairs. Avoiding this Homer
Simpson tendency, we headed back home looking in
the rear view mirror at the Vanilla Bean Café for as
long as we could. It was a soothing sight in the dark
country night, leaving us to think, ‘When can we get
back here?’ The answer was ‘Soon, very soon.’
Tomorrow would be optimal!”

rusty belle began with the quiet determination to
make unique music. Starting
in their living rooms and
working their way through
coffee shops, bars, clubs,
listening rooms, concert halls, and festival stages,
they developed a style all their own. rusty belle
swings easily from sweet, simple melodies, whiskey
lullabies, blood ballads, busted bluegrass, and folkpunk anthems, to tongue-in-cheek sleaze-rock,
glossy-mag candy-pop, and down-home porchtunes. The remarkable thing is that its all done with
honesty and respect for the music. Their shows are
never predictable and always dynamic. at their best
they will bring to you sweet nostalgia, swaggering
poise, drunken logic, and grimy dancing before
sending you home with a gentle “goodnight.”

Saturday - 16 - Peter Mulvey
Over the past 20 years, Peter Mulvey has pursued a
restless, eclectic path as a writer and musician, immersing himself in Tin Pan Alley
jazz, modern acoustic, poetry, narrative, and
Americana stylings. Relentlessly touring as a
headliner, has also shared the stage with luminaries
such as Emmylou Harris, Richard Thompson, Ani
diFranco, Indigo Girls, and Greg Brown. In every
aspect of his career, Mulvey draws on an extremely
broad swath of influence. Still, the live performance
defines the work. Night after night, Mulvey attempts
to be the sum of his parts, to draw on all the musical
legacies he has studied, to make a fresh, vital
moment out of everything he and the audience have
brought to the table that night. “People need this. I
need this. To come together in a room, to try to make
music come alive, for real, for right now, and then to
let it go…that is the whole deal for me.”
“The more you seek security, the less of it you have. But
the more you seek opportunity, the more likely it is that
you will achieve the security that you desire.”
- Brian Tracy

Saturday - 23 - Elison Jackson
Formed in 2009, Elison Jackson is a folk-rock band
from CT. They are fronted by folk singer
Sam Jackson Perduta with shared vocals
from gospel singer Arthur Williams, and
backed by Kevin Aust on bass/trumpet and
Kevin Marrs on drums and percussion. They are
independently releasing their first album, recorded in
Oxford, CT with New Haven band Sidewalk Dave.
The band name comes from a fisherman from New
Bedford, MA who died in the early 1960s.
Sunday - 30 - Becky Chace
Chosen Best Female Vocalist 5 times by the readers
of the Providence Phoenix Best Music
Poll, Becky Chace has been called “one
of the most celebrated singer/songwriters
to come out of the RI area.” - Motif
Magazine. Anyone who has seen Becky
sing in any setting knows she delivers with passion
and conviction every time she takes a stage. Becky
Chace believes that music should be used as a tool to
bring people together. Her entire career has been a
testament to her vision of what music can do. Like
her idols, Dylan, Springsteen, and Lucinda Williams,
she has always believed there is more than one way
to get her message across. Whether by rocking the
house playing rock and blues or by playing in an
intimate setting with just an acoustic guitar and her
voice to communicate her message, Chace proves
genres and styles don’t matter as long as the singer
expresses herself with passion.

Friday - 5 - Open Mic
Hosts - Faith Montaperto & Eric Paradine. Feature - Caroline Waters not only has a gifted voice,
but she is a talented and inspired songwriter, lyricist
and multi-instrumentalist - a legend in the making.
Saturday - 6 - Gabrielle Louise
Gabrielle Louise is a nationally touring troubadour
noted for her poignant lyrics (a two-time
John Lennon Songwriting Contest finalist, winner of the Jack Maher Songwriting Award) and lush voice. Her music is
anchored deeply in folk, but undeniably
drawn to rich harmonies and melodic adventurism.
Her sound has the earthy feel of early Joni Mitchell
while also veering into the spirited delivery of fellow genre-hopping artist Martin Sexton. Unafraid to
take a random musical escapade in the name of
inspiration, Gabrielle is at one moment folkie and
ethereal, the next moment a smoky jazz chanteuse.
When Gabrielle Louise isn’t performing, she’s most
likely tango dancing, hiking a mountain, or jumping
off a cliff into some summer river.
Friday - 12 - Songwriter Sessions
Saturday - 13 - Shawn Taylor
Shawn Taylor’s thumping thumb, dancing fingers
and soulful vocals drive the gritty “new
roots” sound heard on his latest release
“FREE.” His songs reflect the intensity
of contemporary American life on a personal level, through vivid imagery and
passionate delivery, while drawing from the deep
well of great American music traditions and 15
years of performance experience.
He’s drawn
comparisons to Mississippi John Hurt, Tom Waits,
Bruce Springsteen, Ray Lamontagne, Bob Dylan,
Chris Smither, Steve Earl & Stephen Stills, yet his
voice & his songs are distinctly influenced by his
own blue collar wandering roots. He’s worked an
oyster-boat, been a hitch-hiking tramp, a carpenter,
a ‘thru’ hiker, (backpacking the length of the
Appalachian Trail, the Long Trail & The John Muir
Trail), and penned several prize winning short stories on the way. Taylor has been performing full
time in the Northeast, solo & in various combinations of the Wandering Roots Band.

Foot stomping, mind racing, fast flinching music day in and day out, Poor Old
Shine is the Roots-Americana
collaboration of Chris Freeman
and Will Leet. They travel with
an assortment of instruments
including guitars, banjos, pump organ, string bass,
cello, a swarm of harmonicas, and a yard-sale-scrapmetal drum set. It’s old songs with a new feel, banjos
with paint peeled, shoes with holes and treadless
soles, and music that is real. Poor Old Shine’s music
is rooted in the folk and Appalachian mountain
music tradition and fits in well at bluegrass festivals
and sticky rock clubs alike. They have been compared to The Avett Brothers, Mumford and Sons,
Langhorne Slim, and The Low Anthem because of
the changing instrumentation and harmonies. Each
set mixes Freeman and Leet’s songwriting with traditional folk ballads, prison work songs, and front
porch style jamming. Poor Old Shine also features
musicians Antonio Alcorn (Mandolin, guitar), Scott
Thomas McColl (Upright Bass), Malachai Madden
(Cello, Guitar), and David Norman (Organ). All 6
are UCONN. The new band has performed at Toads
Place, The Space and Sully’s.

Saturday - 17 Maria Sangiolo & Jim Henry
Maria Sangiolo has been writing and performing for
children and their families for the past ten
years. A two-time Parents’ Choice awardwinning artist, recipient of a grant from
the CT Commission on Culture and
Tourism and one from the Iguana Fund
from Club Passim in Cambridge, Maria paints with
her pen and her voice. Whether it’s under the moon
singing a lullaby, in the garden building houses for
fairies, by the sea watching dolphins diving or down
on the farm growing and eating veggies, Sangiolo
challenges us to be our very best and be stewards of
the planet at the same time. Born and raised in MA,
Maria has been singing since she first heard the
“angel of music,” as a little girl riding in the back
seat of her parents’ blue Chevy wagon. Maria began
songwriting while still in college. Her musical career
has spanned two decades, enriching her fans lives
with her original & interpreted music. Maria’s songs
are honest, joyful, and earth-centered, all sung from
her young-at-heart muse.
There are only a few musicians who make you wonder if it’s really as easy as it looks. Who
make you crane your neck to see how
many people are up on stage because you
can’t believe all the sounds and textures
emanating from one place. Who you feel
compelled to seek out and thank after the show,
because you were absolutely transported by their
contributions. This is how people feel after hearing
Jim Henry play. His longtime reputation as a phenomenal all-around musician is well-deserved. He
can do it all: play most things stringed, sing lead or
harmony, write great songs, produce, engineer and
arrange. Four solo recordings and literally hundreds
of tracks on other people’s recordings have cemented
his position as one of the most versatile and talented
musicians working in acoustic music today.
Saturday - 24 - Slo-Grass
Slo-Grass is a local blue grass group that practices

entertaining New

brand of ‘Acoustic Americana.’ The band presents
lively instrumentals featuring mandolin, banjo, guitar, acoustic bass, and dobro and vocal selections
showcasing rich four-part harmonies.

Our Pricing Practices
1. Sales Tax Included - Our prices include the
6% Connecticut Sales Tax. The prices listed on the
menu are exactly what you pay. Our prices may seem to
be inflated; however, a $8.50 menu item is actually
$8.02 + $.48 sales tax. Furthermore, this practice makes
it easier for the customer, especially if that customer is
a child who has exact change for a cookie. What you
see is exactly what you pay - what could be simpler?

2. Not Market Standard Pricing - We are not
trying to fool the customer into thinking that $7.95 is
less expensive than $8.00. We find this type of pricing
insulting to our customers. However, the reason it is
used so extensively around the nation is that it works
effectively. We don’t like that practice, and we also like
to believe that our clientele is not so easily fooled.
$9.95
3. No Pennies, Dimes or Nickels - Because our
prices include tax and we do not price in the standard
way, we do not have to use pennies, dimes or nickels.
This is a service to both the customer and to us. We
don’t give you lots of change, and we only have to use
quarters and fifty-cent pieces. This also helps our staff to
be more efficient performing transactions, which saves
time and money. An added bonus is that we don’t have
to count change at the end of the business day.
