INK-UPS with his co-stars seem to
hound Aarya Babbar after his releases. The kiss he shared with his Ab Ke
Baras co-star Amrita Rao in the film got
people speculating about their relationship;
and during the music launch of Chamku,
he was linked with Rosa Catalano. “Amrita!
Why would I date her?” quips Aarya. “As for
Rosa, I wouldn’t like it if Saif bhai dated
my ex. So, Rosa’s out of the question,” he
adds.
So, that rules out co-stars and exes of people in the film frat. Who, then, would the
actor date? “I’d like to be with someone who
isn’t single. Single is boring. I’m a rebel and
think you ought to go for something that
doesn’t belong to you,” says Aarya.
Meanwhile, Aarya’s career, which didn’t
take off as well as he’d hoped, is on an
upswing. He’s currently busy shooting for
Farah Khan’s Tees Maar Khan. “I was frustrated for one-and-a-half years and then
realised that nobody except me was getting
affected by what was happening. Then,
Guru and Jail happened. But I wasn’t flooded with roles after those films,” shares
Aarya, who gets told off by his father Raj
Babbar if he turns in a bad performance .
“But thankfully, he was finally satisfied
with Guru,” he adds.
Aarya will play an inspector posted in a
village in Tees Maar Khan. He has even got
a handlebar moustache to get the look right
for the film. “In Jail, I played a convict and
Single is boring, says
Aarya Babbar, and he
isn’t talking about his
relationship status —
but about what he’d
like in a girlfriend
here I’m the cop. Well, life has its own
screenplay,” smiles Aarya, adding, “Initially,
I was scared to work with Farah because I
heard she’s a tyrant. But she’s a darling, a
cool and fun person. This will be my first
comedy and I’m enjoying the shoot because
it’s full-on masala — typical Farah style.”
What about working with Akshay
Kumar? “Akshay’s the heart-throb of
Bollywood. I’ve grown up watching
his Khiladi series and think he has
great comic timing, something I
need to learn from him,” says Aarya.
Also, Aarya has turned writer and
visualiser for a mythological comic
book series, titled Pushpak Vimaan. “I
loved reading comics as a kid. My passion kept growing and it’s resulted in
Pushpak Vimaan. It’s a mythology
set in today’s world. I’ve read many
books about the various characters in the Ramayana and the
Mahabharata. I’m still in the
process of finalising the contract,” explains Aarya, who emailed the idea to Shekhar
Kapur. “He initiated the
process with a publishing
house. I thought he was the
right person because he’s come up
with comic books like Devi and
Ramayan 3392 AD,” explains Aarya.

ATHER than cashing in on
their hot pairing, Ranbir
Kapoor and Katrina Kaif
have decided to do only one more
film together for now. And they have
chosen Anurag Basu’s Khamoshi, in
which Ranbir plays a deaf-and-mute
character and Katrina pitches in
with the powerful role of a woman
who inspires, supports and eventually galvanises him into achieving his
goal.
While Katrina’s role as a politician in Prakash Jha’s Rajneeti is
inspired by Suchitra Sen in Gulzar’s
1975 classic Aandhi, in Anurag’s
film, her role is similar to Shabana
Azmi’s opposite a blind Naseeruddin
Shah in Sai Paranjape’s Sparsh.
Anurag is confident that the actress
can pull off something so complex.
But, beyond this film, what is
heartening to note in this dog-eatdog world of Bollywood, is that
Imtiaz Ali sacrificed Katrina for
‘I was meant to do a
Shivrajkumar film’
S
HE swore off doing
Kannada films after her
last Sandalwood outing,
Mohini. However, that was six
years ago. “I decided that I wouldn’t do any more Kannada films
after the experience I had on the
sets of Mohini. But I was told that
I shouldn’t close the door on
Sandalwood just because of one
bad production unit,” Sada tells
BT.
Which is why the actress decided to sign the Shivrajkumar flick
Mylari, which will be directed by
Chandru. “I
haven’t done
a love story
in a long time. When I read the
script, I found that the film
depended a lot on expressions,
which excited me,” says Sada,
adding that she’s also considering other Sandalwood offers.
One of them, in fact, was a
Shashank film. “It
was another good
script, in which my
character had shades
of grey, but things didn’t work out. I was
probably meant to do
a Shivrajkumar
film,” she says
philosophically.
The actress also
missed the opportunity to work with P Vasu
on Aptharakshaka. “I
was approached for the film,
but there was some miscommunication. By the time I got back to
them, they had already started
filming,” reveals Sada. She’s, however, got another chance
to work with the
director on the
Tamil film,
ONCE MORE: Sada
Pulivesham. “I’m a big fan of P
Vasu. I like his treatment of his
heroines’ roles and admire the
way he shoots. I’m also excited
about working on a Tamil film
after a long
time,” she says.
Her last
Bollywood
film,
Click,
tanked at
the box
office. Is that
why she’s making a return to
southern cinema? “I
was fortunate that
the good work I did
down south earlier
helped establish me
as an actress. I just
need the right Hindi
film and I’ll be there,” she says
optimistically. And Sada’s confidence doesn’t seem unfounded.
“I’ve currently been offered three
Hindi films, but I can’t do them all
at the same time. I’ll pick the best
project,” she says.

ON THE LOOKOUT:
Aarya Babbar
Anurag. Apparently, the actress
could only do one of two projects
with Ranbir, so the two film-makers
mutually decided that Anurag’s film
needs her more. In return, Anurag
has given Imtiaz the first right to
Ranbir’s dates. Imtiaz starts his film
in May and ends in July. Anurag
gave him 15 days for promotion from
the day he finishes his film and will
start Khamoshi in August after
Imtiaz is done.
Talking of Katrina, Anurag said,
“She is a very sensitive actress. So,
far we haven’t really seen her dramatic worth. This happens with
very beautiful actresses.”
Aware that all eyes will be on
Ranbir and Katrina after Ajab Prem
Ki Ghazab Kahani and Rajneeti,
Anurag added, “They are magical
together. But my film will create a
different magic.”

‘BOLLYWOOD?
Not just yet’
You have quite a few films releasing
this year…
On principle, I work on 5-6 films a year. My
next flick is Darling in Telugu. After the success of Magadheera, I’ve been receiving several scripts, but I have to turn them down as
I can’t act in all of them.
Any B-town aspirations?
I’ve received offers from Bollywood, but don’t
want to do a Hindi film when it has nothing
solid to offer me. I prefer to consolidate
myself down south. But it doesn’t mean I
would never do a Hindi film. I’ve grown up
in a Punjabi household and doing a Hindi
film will be in my comfort zone.
You are quite tall by leading lady
standards…
Yes, while working with some actors, I have
to wear flats. But while working with actors
like Prabhas, who is 6’2”, I walk around the
sets in my heels. I just love my heels.
You’ve worked with a number of top
stars. Who are you friends with?
I have a great working relationship with all
my co-stars. But I don’t have a 3 am friend
nor do I chat with them daily. But when I
meet them again, it’s like old times.
Do you miss having someone special
in your life?
Isn’t it sad (laughs)? When I see young girls
of my age having fun, I feel sad for myself.
I’m so caught up with work that there isn’t
time to indulge in stuff like that. But I keep
telling myself that at the right time and
right place, I will find someone. Till that
time, I’m happy working.
