Historic Johnson Farm
Annual Report
2013-2014
Mission of Historic Johnson Farm
Over the past 27 years, many wonderful things have come together to make the dream of Vernon
and Leander Johnson a reality. Hundreds of hours of volunteering, grant writing, fundraising,
building and renovating have culminated in a magical place - a heritage center - for many to enjoy.
The Johnson Farm is a gift to be treasured and preserved for generations to come.
 To preserve examples of the objects, structures, landscape and life ways of the people
between 1880-1950.
 To provide opportunities for students to learn about the physical and cultural history of
Henderson County.
 To provide opportunities for students in Henderson County to participate in the care of,
planning for and implementation of plans related to the Moss-Johnson Farm.
 To serve as a community heritage center.
 To preserve the Farm as an example of late 19th and early 20th century Farm and tourist
retreat.
 To provide students and youth of the region a hands-on learning site for WNC history and
culture.
 To encourage the opportunities for the Farm to be used as a teaching tool for enrichment
in the arts, math, science, literature, historic preservation and other areas.
 To support agricultural and environmental studies and the preservation of endangered
plant life on the Farm.
 To provide a site for teacher renewal and curriculum development.
 To aid in the understanding, enjoyment and preservation of the cultural resources of our
area.

Committee Reports
Advisory Committee:
Members: Scott Shelton, Chair - Al Smith, Vice-Chair - Ruby McClung, Secretary - Bill Solberg, Treasurer
Ingrid McNair, Director - Bo Caldwell, HCPS Human Resources - Marcia Grant - Sally Hale
Linda Graham - Ruth Howe - Sonna Lyda - Kevin Parries - Joe Prescott - Mike Pressley - Corum Smith

Our 18 member committee met monthly to conduct business and manage the farm.
Animals Committee:
Members: Mary Garrison - Dot Marlow - Ingrid McNair - Bill Solberg
The animals at Johnson Farm continue to be a big drawing card for visitors and school children. We
have three donkeys, two sheep, and chickens. Our newest addition is Diva, a sweet sheep who allows
anyone to pet her!
 Ingrid continued to provide daily care and lots of TLC for the animals.
 Jerry and Ingrid McNair provided weekend care.
 Bill Solberg kept track of financial records.
“The Animals Committee received 30 donations this
past year to fund food, veterinary care, and weekend
care for the farm animals. We are so appreciative of
these businesses and individuals who are faithful to this
cause each year. A special thank-you to Drs. Richard
and Alison Reid: Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics
for being a major sponsor. We are extremely grateful to
Ingrid and Jerry McNair for the time and care they
tirelessly provide as animal caretakers for evenings,
weekends and holidays.
We continue to work on Animal Endowments with both
the HCEF, Inc. and the Community Foundation of
Henderson County. Thank you to the Monday Men’s
group for cleaning and painting the old pig barn. We
invite all to visit the farm and see the smiles on the
faces of visitors and schoolchildren as they interact
with the animals. Thank you to the Heritage Weavers
for providing the Sheep to Shawl experiences each
spring festival so children connect a slice of history with
the role of farm animals. Last, but perhaps most
important, it is so gratifying to provide a hands-on
experience to children each year who have never had
the opportunity to touch an animal. It is very rewarding
to see the reaction when it happens for the first time.
Vernon and Leander Johnson would be pleased. “

A Word from Ruth Howe:
“Heritage Weavers & Fiber Artists will celebrate our
five year birthday in August 2015 at Historic
Johnson Farm’s boarding house. Members work
closely with the Farm Director, Ingrid McNair and
Public Relations Chair, Joyce Cochran to coordinate
many activities.
HWFA members have raised the funds to add an
outdoor classroom for the messier crafts we teach.
The patio is almost complete and is already being
used. Landscaping and a walkway will be
completed this summer.
The annual sheep to shawl demonstration drew
many people during the Spring Festival. The wool
yarn for the shawl was sheared at the 2013 festival
and prepared this spring for weaving the shawl. An
estimated 350 hours went into the preparation –
shearing, washing, picking, spinning, plying,
washing again, planning, warping and weaving and
finally finishing the shawl.
A gift shop is open Monday through Friday from
10 – 4. All items in the gift shop are handmade by
HWFA members and include lovely accessories,
baby gifts, kitchen and dining linens, children’s toys
etc.
The members of Heritage Weavers and Fiber Artists
are grateful to the Henderson County Board of
Education and the Historic Johnson Farm Advisory
Committee for the opportunity to call the Boarding
House home!”
“To live in hearts one leaves
behind, is not to die.”
