June 2015 WARD 1 NEWS FROM COUNCILLOR RICK CRAVEN IN THIS ISSUE… Community Satisfaction Survey Tree Cutting in Tyandaga PanAm Games Two Major New Developments Road Construction Additional Bus Service GO Station Parking Lot Expansion Snake Road Update Let’s Ride Mural Coming to King Road Alderfest is Coming! Public Meetings Community Events & Programs DEAR FRIENDS, The City recently completed a “Forum Research” Community Satisfaction Survey. Random phone calls were made to 771 households including at least 125 in each ward. The overall survey indicated that 89% of respondents were either “somewhat” or “very” satisfied with City services. The results from Ward One were the most positive in the City with emergency management, cemetery services and parks getting the highest scores. The areas of least satisfaction were road maintenance, traffic operations and snow clearing. These findings are being studied by City staff and will be used as part of Council’s current strategic planning discussions. What’s Hot? Tree Cutting I have been advised by Hydro One (an agency of the Province of Ontario) that it will be conducting “vegetation management” on its major transmission corridors in Burlington this year. One of these corridors runs through Tyandaga, from the “Nelson Junction” near Scenic Point, south to the “Burlington Transfer Station” below the 403. It runs adjacent to Westhaven Drive, Forestvale Drive, Sturbridge Drive, Crofton Way and Skyview Drive. Vegetation management is necessary to protect against blackouts, ensure hydro worker safety and provide for safe public use. Hydro One is planning to do maintenance on the full width of the corridor. This will entail the removal of a “significant” number of trees and other vegetation in order to bring the corridor into compliance with legislated and regulatory standards for minimum clearances between vegetation and high-voltage wires. Hydro One told me that it will attempt to leave as much “compatible” vegetation on the corridor as possible, provided that at maturity it will not pose a risk to the safe and reliable operation of the overhead wires. The work is scheduled to begin this summer. Hydro officials intend to host an “open house” on the evening of June 23 to provide the community with more details. Hydro One has advised Conservation Halton and the City of Burlington about this work. I will keep you advised, but for more information visit the Hydro One website at www.HydroOne.com/projects/VegetationManagement, e-mail them at [email protected] or phone 1-877-345-6799. The hydro corridor land is the sole responsibility of Hydro One. Question of the Month? Dust and Debris Who do I call when I suspect air pollution, in the form of dirt, possibly from asphalt and concrete plants in west Aldershot? My office receives calls about this concern around this time every year. Potential sources of air pollution are investigated by the Burlington office of the Ministry of Environment. The contact there is Karen Wassink at 905-319-3149. Tyandaga PanAm Games City View Park will be used as a practice venue for soccer during the games. PanAm will have exclusive use of the northwest quadrant of the park, including the 3 artificial turf soccer fields, from July 5 to 25. The general public will not be permitted to use this part of the park as spectators are not allowed at practice sessions. The southern part of the park, including the Bruce Trail, will remain open during the games. Maple New Homes About 30 residents attended this week’s public meeting to discuss a redevelopment project at 1167 Bellview Crescent. The City’s Planning Department is currently considering the application from Markay Homes to construct 2 houses on Bellview Crescent and 5 on an adjacent private condo road. Residents in attendance expressed some concerns about side yard setbacks and about the radius of the private road. City staff are expected to make recommendations to Council concerning this matter in the fall. ALDERSHOT Two Major New Developments Proposed in Aldershot ADI Developments is proposing to build 200 stacked townhouses, 64 standard townhouses and 60 back-to-back townhouses in the area north of Masonry Crt and east of Waterdown Road. A public meeting is planned for Wednesday, June 24 at 7 pm at West Plains United Church to discuss the proposal. Although not part of this particular application ADI has also signaled its desire to build four six-storey apartment buildings in “phase two” of this project, near the GO station. A second public meeting is planned for Thursday, June 25 at 7 pm at East Plains United Church. You are invited to see and discuss the proposal by Melrose Developments for the redevelopment of three pieces of property on the south side of Plains Road, near Filmandale including: the former Foo Ho restaurant, the former Bell Motel and the retail plaza in between. The proposed new development includes 2 six-storey condominium buildings totaling 178 residential units. One of the buildings would include 3,000 square feet of retail/commercial space. Both underground and surface parking are included in the plan. Both proposals are currently under review by the City’s Planning staff. They have not been approved. Road Construction The Province is about to begin maintenance work on the Plains Road West bridge over the 403 near Bridgeview. Temporary signals will be put in place and the bridge will be reduced to one lane during this work. The work involves repairs to the walls and railings on the bridge and will continue until October. Additional Bus Service As a result of a request by north Aldershot residents, the Hamilton Street Railway (bus system) has agreed to additional stops on Waterdown Road. Currently the HSR stops only at Mt. Brow Road. Beginning June 29 the bus, which runs to and from the Aldershot GO Station, will also stop at Rennick Road, Flatt Road and Craven Avenue. This additional service will be Monday to Friday during peak periods. i.e. 5 am to 9 am and 2:30 pm to 8 pm. GO Station Parking Lot Metrolinx has advised my office that construction has started on the expansion of its parking lot at the Aldershot GO Station. One hundred new spaces will be added over the next few months. Snake Road Update In response to neighbourhood requests for traffic calming measures the City has updated traffic control and warning signs on this road, foliage has been removed from several locations to improve visibility, Children Playing signs have been installed at the north end, police have been asked to increase enforcement and traffic speed and volume studies are underway. The City anticipates hosting a public meeting about traffic on Snake Road, sometime in the fall. Randle Reef Project Update Tenders have finally been issued for this very important remediation project in Burlington Bay, across from Aldershot’s shoreline. The City of Burlington and the Region of Halton are contributing $4.3 million to the $140 million project, which is expected to take many years to complete. This is the last major initiative required to delist Hamilton Harbour as an area of environmental concern. Let’s Ride! Please join me and Burlington Cycling Committee member Don Thorpe for an 8 km (45 minute) bike ride in south Aldershot on the evening of Monday, June 29. We’re meeting at LaSalle Park at 7pm. Should be fun. Everyone‘s welcome. Congratulations! The LaSalle Park Marina has become the first marina on Lake Ontario to receive the “Blue Flag” environmental designation. I was pleased to be in attendance at the recent “Blessing of the Boats” when the honour was presented. The Blue Flag award is administered in Canada by Environmental Defence and is managed internationally by the Foundation for Environmental Education based in Denmark. To receive the Blue Flag, marinas have to meet international standards in water quality, environmental management, environmental education, safety and services. Well done! Our Thanks The recent tree planting exercise at Bridgeview Park was a great success. Thanks to the Girl Guide volunteers and to RONA for its sponsorship. The tree planting was part of the effort to enhance the natural areas of the Cootes to Escarpment Eco Park System. Similar projects are planned for the fall at Bayview and Kerncliff Parks. Photo Art on Plains Thanks to Aldershot resident David Craig and to the Burlington Historical Society for the latest “wrap-around” art on Plains Road. You can see it at the south / east corner of Plains and Francis where the grey utility box has been wrapped with an historic photo of old Aldershot. This latest ‘wrap-around” is sponsored by the Historical Society. Two earlier “wraparounds” (at Shadeland and King) were sponsored by the Aldershot Community Honour Roll. The “wrap-around” project is just the latest in a series of steps aimed at dressing up Aldershot’s main street. Mural Coming to King Road As part of the city’s public art plan, $12,000 has been allocated for a mural on King Road adjacent to the new underpass. The successful artist will be selected shortly with a view toward completion of the project this fall. The artist will decide in conjunction with the City exactly where the mural should be located, of what material it will be made and what the subject of the work may be. OTHER Alderfest is Coming! A new community celebration is coming to Aldershot. Mark your calendars for Sunday, June 28, 1-4 p.m. at Bolus Gardens Parkette for "Alderfest" . And to former resident Chris Schultz who was named to the Burlington Sports Hall of Fame in recognition of his contributions to the C.F.L., N.F.L. and T.S.N. Vulnerable Persons Registry Did you know? Halton Regional Police have an on-line "Vulnerable Person Registry" program. This voluntary registry is designed to ensure that front line officers have access to vital information when responding to occurrences involving people with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Other vulnerable groups may also use the registry such as the families of those suffering from Alzheimers, medical, mental health or a physical condition. The registry provides police with emergency contact information, detailed physical descriptions, known routines and the special needs of the individual. The information assists officers in communicating with, attending a residence of, or dealing with an individual involved in an emergency.
