GREETINGS FROM THE YMCA
Welcome and Good Evening,
It is with great pleasure that I greet all assembled here tonight in celebration of
the YMCA of Greater Bergen County’s 47th Annual Sports Award Banquet.
The Y is a powerful association of men, women and children joined together by a
shared commitment to nurturing the potential of kids, promoting healthy living
and fostering a sense of social responsibility. We believe that lasting personal
and social change can only come about when we all work together to invest in
kids, our health and our neighbors. That’s why strengthening community is our
cause. Every day, we work side by side with our neighbors in our communities
to make sure that everyone, regardless of age, income or background, has the
opportunity to learn, grow and thrive.
Congratulations to tonight’s honorees and thank you for all that you do in your
schools and communities. We recognize each of you for your personal and athletic achievements, and for instilling in each other a collective sense of what is
right and what is good. These are values that you have learned while competing
in sports, and values by which you have chosen to live.
Thank you to the members of the Sports Award Committee for their hard work
and dedication in putting this event together. It is truly one of Bergen County’s
premier events.
Finally, I would like to thank all the businesses, corporations and organizations
participating in this year’s banquet that provided financial support for Y programs that serve the greater Bergen County community.
Again, congratulations to all here tonight and best wishes for continued success.
The Y would like to acknowledge
and thank the following Foundations for their support through

DEDICATED AWARDS
Richard Poor Service
to the Community Award
Dick Poor was one of the founders
of the YMCA Athletic Achievement
Awards Banquet, now called the Sports
Award Banquet, which was started in
1966 and grew out of the Y’s pioneering interest in, and emphasis on,
sports and physical fitness as a means
of character development. He served
on the committee until his death. A
member of the YMCA Board of Managers for many years, Dick was a career
banker with a lifelong interest in both
young people and sports. He had a
strong dedication to the betterment of
life in Bergen County.
Thomas L. Della Torre
Special Achievement
Award
Tommy Della Torre, renowned football
coach, athletic director, disciplinarian, mentor, friend and member of
the YMCA of Greater Bergen County’s
Board of Directors, was dedicated to
youth, sports and family. This award
is given to someone who embodies
Tom’s attributes and ideals, as well as
the values of spirit, mind and body for
which the YMCA stands.
J. Barry Stanford Award
for Outstanding
Achievement in High
School Sports
This Special Achievement Award is given to recently graduated high school
students who have received significant
recognition in sports. It was renamed
posthumously in honor of Barry Stanford, who served on the Sports Award
Banquet Committee for over 30 years
and was passionate about high school
sports and the young people involved
in them.
Nicholas G. Saingas
Service to Youth Award
for Contribution to High
School Athletics
Although Nick Saingas did not join
the Awards Committee until after his
retirement from Public Service, he had
been a strong supporter of the Sports
Award Banquet for many years. An
avid athlete all his life, he understood
the importance of sports in the development of young people. His impact on
others was great. He was a true friend
to our youth and generously contributed his time and talents both to them
and to activities which benefited their
lives.

Walter E. Goepel
Amateur Athlete of the
Year Award
Involved with the YMCA of Greater
Bergen County off and on throughout
his life, Walt Goepel in his later years
served on both the Sports Award Banquet Committee and the YMCA Board
of Directors. Once a nationally ranked
tennis player, he was a 12-time Bergen County tennis champion in both
singles and doubles, and a New Jersey
state singles champion.
William J. “Mickey”
Corcoran Award
This award is named after the longtime Northern Highlands and River Dell
athletic director and coach, Mickey
Corcoran, whose service to the high
school athletes in this area covers six
decades. “The Mentor” is a long-time
member of the YMCA Sports Award
Committee and the Bergen County
Coaches’ Association Basketball Jamboree Committee. His contributions to
high school athletics, the many students he helped, the countless number
of coaches he counseled and friends
he made along the way make Mickey
one of the legendary figures in Bergen
County athletic history.
PERSON OF THE YEAR
Dr. Michael Kuchar
Dr. Michael Kuchar has dedicated his life to public service
in the field of education.
Since 2005, Dr. Kuchar has served as Bergenfield’s Superintendent of Schools. In that time, he has led the Bergenfield School District with visionary initiatives. In the fall of
2006, the district partnered with two other school districts
to begin the Tri Valley Academy for children with Autism.
In 2007, the Bergenfield School District was awarded a
grant from the United States Golf Association to pilot a
summer golf program for students with autism. In May
of 2008, Dr. Kuchar was presented with the Innovations
in Special Education Award from the New Jersey School
Boards Association (NJSBA) and the Association of Schools
and Agencies for the Handicapped (ASAH) for this innovative program which partners with the USGA and continues
to serve students throughout Bergen County.
In the fall of 2008, Bergenfield School District was one
among only 50 school districts in the nation to be awarded
the United States Department of Education’s Elementary
and Secondary School Counseling Grant to begin an elementary school counseling program.
Bergenfield was the only district in New Jersey to be selected for this grant award worth over one million dollars.
In September 2010, NJ Monthly Magazine rated Bergenfield HS as the Most Improved High School in NJ as its academic
rankings went from 234 to a rank of 136 in just a two-year time span.

to Hong Kong with
her family when
she was only three
years-old and began playing tennis
at the apartment

ranking is no. 25 and in doubles, 133.
McHale has beaten numerous top WTA
tour players, including two-time Grand
Slam event winner Svetlana Kuznetsova,
Caroline Wozniacki (ranked world no. 1
at the time), Wimbledon champion Petra
Kvitova, and Wimbledon finalist Marion
Bartoli.
Maya Lawrence
Walter E. Goepel Amateur Athlete
Award
Olympian Maya
Lawrence represented the United
States in fencing
at the 2012 Olympics in London. She
placed sixteenth
in the individual
epee, which was
the highest of any American, and helped
the team come home with a Bronze medal.
A 1998 graduate of Teaneck High School,
Lawrence was a two-time first team
all-state selection in epee her junior and
senior years. She was then a four-time
All-Ivy League selection and also an
All-America pick at Princeton University
where she graduated with honors in 2002
with a double degree in political science
and African-American studies.
Lawrence was a member of the first U.S.
women’s epee team to win a medal at the
World Cup, claiming the silver in SaintMaur, France, the last Olympic qualifying
event for the 2012 games. She was also
a member of U.S. world championship and
national teams in 2005, 2006, 2007 and
2011 and fenced in the team event at the
2010 world championships. The former

compete due to injury.
She was the 2005 U.S. national champion in epee and the 1999 junior Olympic

In 2007 after receiving her Masters
degree from Columbia University Teachers College in the English As a Second
Language program, Lawrence moved to
Paris, France. She currently trains in Paris
and is coached by Maitre Daniel Lavavasseur. Lawrence is a member of the New
York Athletic Club in New York City and
was formerly coached by current Fairleigh
Dickinson University coach Roger Cummings and former Princeton University
coach Michael Sebastiani.
Tom Eickelberg
Walter E. Goepel Amateur Athlete
Award
Tom Eickelberg is a
model of the best of
amateur athletics—
dedication, determination, and defiance
of obstacles that
might stop others in
their tracks.
Tom is a 2007 graduate of Leonia High
School and a 2011 graduate of Adelphi
6
University, where he was a member of
the cross county, swim and track teams.
In addition to being a three sport high
school and collegiate athlete, he has
also participated in triathlons since his
sophomore year in high school. Tom was
a member of the YMCA of Greater Bergen
County Tide swim team since age 10 and
represented Tide at YMCA Nationals both
his junior and senior years in high school.
He still holds Tide records for several of
his swim events during these years.
Tom competes in triathlons locally and
nationally and has performed in the top
tier in numerous events. While triathlons
are considered amateur events, Tom is
considered an elite/professional competitor. Among the highlights, he participated
in the NYC Nautica Triathlon for the past
3 years, coming in 13th in 2009, and, despite equipment problems, 16th in 2010
and 17th in 2011, in a field of over 2,200
men each year (2012 race to be held July
8, 2012). He was also the Runner’s Edge
Long Island Triathlete of the Year in 2010
and 2011.
None of these achievements were easy
for Tom. An asthmatic since grade 2,
Tom’s left lung collapsed at age 13 during
a swim meet, and he was taken out of
all sports. He has been diagnosed with
a genetic condition related to Marfan’s
Syndrome, and he is now part of a medical
study at Johns Hopkins University. When
he returned to competition, he was limited
to non-contact sports and spent much
of his high school and collegiate athletic
careers dealing with his pulmonary issues.
During his summers throughout high
school and college, Tom gave swim lessons to autistic children when he worked
at Haworth Swim Club. His interest in
helping these children came from his time
when he was not allowed to participate in
sports, due to his asthma and lung problems. Tom’s success is not just a sign of
great athletic ability, but of determination.
Eickelberg said that while winning is nice,
he enjoys the triathlon primarily because
it is a family affair. Eickelberg’s father, Bill,
and sister, Betsy, also compete in triathlons. “Definitely, my favorite races are the
small ones where I get to hang out with
my dad and sister,” Eickelberg said, adding
that his mother comes to watch.
Stacie Dulkis
College Athlete of the Year
Stacie competed
in soccer and
track and field
at Mahwah High
School. She enjoyed an outstanding senior year in
soccer as she was
named first team
all-state, first team All-North Jersey,
first team All-county, and first team
All-league as well as being selected a
Bergen County Athlete of the Week. She
was also a honorable mention All-decade Bergen County team in soccer. She
is the school’s record holder in the 55
meter dash and was an All-league track
selection.
At the University of Delaware, Stacie
started as a freshman and appeared in
17 games. She was awarded the MVP of
the Yale tournament. In her sophomore
year she scored five goals for the Blue
Hens, two of them game-winners. She
played in all 16 games as a junior and
moved on to the all-time points list at
Delaware with 22 points. She was captain of the Delaware team as a senior.
Stacie is looking forward to becoming a
high school soccer coach.

the week by the Big East Conference and
has made three Bowl appearances. He

John Wroblewski
Richard Poor Service to the Community
-Adult Award
John Wroblewski started his athletic
career at St. Cecilia’s High School in Englewood as an All-conference athlete. As the
captain in both sports, he led the football
7
and baseball teams
to much success.
As the starting linebacker/fullback on
the football team,
he was a major
force on a team
that allowed only
12 points scored
against them. John was chosen as the
best running back in his senior year.
He stared all four years on a baseball
team that made many county and state
tournament appearances. Upon graduation he was invited to a professional tryout with the Mets, Pirates and Expos.
Wrobo’s prowess did not end on the athletic field – he brought that same sense of
commitment and dedication to the classroom, where he was named Student of
the Month a number of times. He went to
Montclair State University and continued
his football and baseball playing.
He started his coaching career in 1976 at
St. Cecelia’s, working as an assistant under
Richie Higgins, and as head track coach.
He became the first football coach at
Palisades Park in 1978 and took the team
to the NJSIAA football playoffs. He later
became Athletic Director where he was
responsible for adding a number of teams.
Under his leadership, the school has become respected throughout the state.
Wrobo has twice been named BCSL Athletic Director of the Year and was named
Bergen County Athletic Director of the
Year in 2005. He remains active in the
Bergen County Coaches Association where
he served as President in 2002-03 and
still serves as football liaison. He also
runs the All-county dinners for the BCCA.
He has received the prestigious National
Football Foundation College Hall of Fame
Athletic Director of the Year in 2004 and
was selected as the NJSIAA North Jersey
Athletic Director of the Year in 2008. John
was named Palisades Park’s Teacher of
the Year in 2012!
Sean McCann
Richard Poor Service to the Community-Youth Award
Sean is a Park
Ridge High School

an outdoor education counselor at Camp
Bernie and was the school’s Boys State
delegate as a junior. He also participated
in school plays and musicals.

Raiser www.cotaforgavins.com. This activity raised more than $28,000 for a child
in need of a kidney transplant.
MariaElena Bellinger
William Corcoran Service to Youth
When asked how
she feels about the
younger generation, MariaElena
responded, “As
far as my feelings
toward my service
to young people; I
guess I would best
describe it as a ‘play it forward’ lifestyle.
Participation in sports was such an enormous factor in shaping my life and who
I am as a person in general. My former
coaches were the mentors that provided
me with those opportunities and created
that passion in me. I truly believe that we
learn so many life lessons and tools for
our future endeavors through sports, so
taking my ‘turn’ in creating that passion in
today’s youth is most important. Although
the wins and championships are a nice
bonus. However, I am most proud of being
a part of shaping the lives of my student
athletes.”
MariaElena is a Rutgers College graduate and Paramus resident where she is
a member of the Council. She has taught
health and physical education in Bergen
County schools since 1994. She is the
head girls volleyball coach at Paramus
High School where she has garnered the
following awards: 2005 NJSIAA “Legend
of the Game” Award Recipient and the
1999 and 2005 Bergen County Coach of
the Year. MariaElena previously coached
the boys volleyball team at Fair Lawn High
School and was named 2004 National
Federation State High School Coach of the
Year. She has recently been inducted into
the Paramus High School Hall of Fame
Frederick Stengel, Jr.
Nicholas G. Saingas Service to Youth
Fred Stengel served
22 years as the
Head Football
Coach at Bergen
Catholic H.S.; his
head coaching
career record was
192-49. He put
together a record
of 99-10 between
1990-and 1999, which made Bergen
Catholic the winningest football program
in the state of New Jersey for the decade
of the 90’s. Coach Stengel led the Crusaders into the state playoffs 21 consecutive
seasons, with 25 playoff victories and 9
State Championships. Three of his teams
were undefeated: 1991, 1992, and 1998.
The 1992 team was undefeated and
their championship game with Paramus
Catholic, which Bergen won 44-34, was
voted Game of the Century by the Bergen
Record. The 1998 team was 12-0, #1 in
New Jersey, and #9 in USA Today national
poll, and was voted Team of the Century
by the Bergen Record. The 2004 State
Championship team was ranked #1 in
the NY/NJ/CONN Tri-State Area by the
MSG Network. Including his numbers as
the 1st assistant to the legendary Lou
Rettino at Union H.S., Fred participated in
playoffs 32 of his last 33 years coach-
8
ing, and was part of 16 State Championships including 7 at Union and 9 at B.C.
In the 22 years he was the head man at
Bergen Catholic, 36 players received full
scholarships, 72 players played in the Ivy
or Patriot Leagues, 27 were named first
team All-state, and 35 players went on to
be captains of their college teams.
Coach Stengel is a graduate of West
Chester State University and he served
as a graduate-assistant at Miami of Ohio
where he received his masters degree in
educational administration. Coach Stengel
is married to his wife Mary Lynne and they
have two children and five grandchildren.
Tyler Timothy Vitiello
YMCA Inspirational/Courageous Youth
• November 5,
2011 - Tyler Vitiello, Saddle Brook
senior team captain,
sustained a neck injury during the first
quarter of a game
against Glen Rock.
The severity of the
injury was not immediately known, but Tyler could not feel or move the bottom half
of his body. He was immediately treated
on the field, placed on a stretcher and
brought to Hackensack University Medical
Center where he was in surgery from 6:00
p.m. until 4:30 a.m.
• November 18 - Tyler reached a major
milestone in his recovery from a broken
neck. Tyler walked on his own for the first
time since suffering the injury.
• December 8, 2011 - Aside from the
neck brace, Tyler was just another one
of the kids when he surprised his teammates at the Saddle Brook football team
awards banquet. He smiled and laughed
with his teammates. Most importantly, he
was walking around the room with a smile
on his face and a spring to every step
he took. “It’s really great, just to be here
back with my friends,” Vitiello said with
a smile. Vitiello was out on a four-hour
pass for the night from Kessler.
• June 20, 2012 - Graduation was a big
moment for Tyler. Not just because of the
diploma, but because he could walk up
to get it. “I am happy to walk at gradu-
ation, I didn’t think I would be walking,”
said Vitiello. “I thought I might have to be
wheeled out. It was a great four years. I
wouldn’t change a thing... even with what
happened.”
During this ordeal, Tyler has accumulated
many awards for the courage he has
displayed. The cable television station
MSG has honored Tyler for his pure heart
and determination to never give up and to
work hard to one day walk again. He was
honored by the National UNICO Foundation, an Italian American service organization, and was awarded the Brian Piccolo
Award for being an outstanding athlete
and honor student. Tyler is attending
Montclair State University and is an Athletic Training major.
Bob Rudolph
YMCA Inspirational/Courageous Adult
Bob Rudolph
has overcome
two strokes; the
second was considered massive
leaving the entire
left side of his
body paralyzed.
Doctors told him
that the chances
of walking again were slim and he’d likely
be confined to a wheelchair.
Through an intense physical therapy
process over five months, he was able
to move and advance from the wheelchair to a walker and then a cane. In
due course, he was then to return to his
passion, coaching basketball and he did
it without the use of any wheelchair or
walker.
Bob continues to work with a trainer
three days a week as well as working on
his own the other days via a combination of cardio-strength training and pool
therapy. He regularly plays golf using
one hand, drives a car and does most
things he enjoyed doing prior to having
had the strokes.
In the post-stroke recovery process, Bob
feels that above all, none of this could
have been accomplished without the
support of family and dear friends who
have shown tremendous compassion and
encouragement. Bob lives his everyday
life by the simple philosophy to enjoy
each day, to meet every challenge that
could come along, and to give back.
Bob’s basketball achievements are
equally impressive – with two Sectional
Titles at two different schools. Bob
has also won Coach of the Year honors
at each school he coached - Emerson,
Pascack Hills, NV Demarest. The most
prestigious being 2003-04 North New
Jersey Coach of the Year Award from the
Bergen Record. THE NV Demarest team
was a 2011-12 Bergen Jamboree Finalist. The strokes have not slowed him
down, as Bob continues to add to his list
of achievements.
Terence Burke
Special Achievement Award for Achievement as a Football & Baseball Coach
Terence Burke has
been a fixture on
the Bergen County
athletic scene for
over 40 years. He
is a graduate of
Dumont HS and
Trenton State. He
began his teaching
career in Saddle Brook, but spent the
majority of his 40+ educational and professional career at Tenafly High School.
He taught Industrial Arts and Drafting
and spent the final ten years of his time
at Tenafly HS as a guidance counselor.
While at Tenafly Terry served as an
assistant football coach to the legendary Buzz Firkser, head football coach
and freshmen baseball coach as well. He
also spent time at Pascack Hills working
with another Bergen County legend, his
brother Bob.
Terence also made his mark with the
Bergen County Coaches Association
serving as president and football liaison
where he coordinated the all-county
selection process for several years.
Additionally, he worked as the coordina-
9
tor of the Freshmen County Baseball
Tournament for many years.
Terence has become a fixture at the
Bergen County Jamboree having been
recruited by Ed Strohmeyer to run the
official clock 16, of Bergen County’s
most prestigious tournament.
Terence is a gentleman and a respected
person around the county whose efforts
have largely gone unnoticed and unrecognized due to his humble and professional demeanor.
John Gorman
Special Achievement Award for Professional Excellence in Sports Officiating
John Gorman has
been officiating
a wide variety of
sports on the high
school, collegiate
and professional
levels for more than
40 years. John first
officiated in 1969

baseball, softball, football, basketball
and most notably lacrosse.
