FIRST FRIDAY: Baker London Presents
BAKER LONDON

Join us in welcoming the band Baker
London back to Decorah, the namesake of
our emerging artists concert series! Baker
London blends rock, ska, country, and folk
to create a sound that is both familiar and
strikingly original. Formed in 2005 in Chicago, members live
in LA, Minneapolis, and Olympia WA but have roots in Decorah
and love coming home. They have released 9 albums.
“Baker London Presents” was created to support and promote
emerging artists and provide a venue for live music in Decorah.
Founded in honor of Baker London’s alter ego, Trevor Grimm,
“Baker London Presents” aims to ensure his legacy will live on
through this series of concerts at ArtHaus. BYOB ok.

The ArtHaus Poetry Slam has become a not-to-be-missed Decorah

(a good-natured competition complete with prizes

Most people know that “Huck Finn” and “The Catcher in the
Rye” topped the banned books list for decades. But how about
Shel Silverstein’s “A Light in the Attic”?! If art is meant to hold a
mirror to humanity, what is it about our society we cannot bear to
see or understand? Join the young performers of Upstart Crow
Theatreworks in this original street theatre performance, offered
around town throughout Banned Books Week.

Pianist Jessica Paul collaborates with six of Luther’s top student
vocalists: Adam Bradley, Alec Carlson, Molly Clementz, Kari
Jensen, Evan Mitchell, and Erin Persick. With lyrical words and
virtuosic accompaniment, art songs convey a range of emotions in a
colorful series of short, imaginative pieces.

One cello and two unexpected partners – dancer and narrator
– come together for an intimate night of performance and
conversation. A reading of the classic children’s story “Ferdinand
the Bull” comes to life with the stroke of a bow, and Bach’s Cello
Suite No. 4 takes on new meaning through interaction with
contemporary dance. Featuring Phuc Phan, Amanda Hamp, and
Kristen Underwood.

Join us for a theatrical exploration of Scandanavia’s “Santa Lucia.”
Ancient traditions honoring the life of a martyred peasant girl have
grown through the ages into a celebration of the winter solstice and
coming of the light. Young performers bring the stories and songs
of “Santa Lucia” to life in this original theatre production for all
ages. Directed by Upstart Crow Theatreworks’ Kristen Underwood
and choral director Tabita Green.

SPANISH STORIES & A BOOK, level I

If you’ve had a basic introduction to the language (10-30 hours
of exposure), join Jim Tripp as he leads you through his fun (and
successful!) approach to language acquisition. Spend the first half
of the class in casual conversation and making up stories. The

This class is for students of all levels who want to sharpen their
abilities to see and draw with an artist’s perspective. Working from
live models will allow you to improve and perfect your drawing
skills of the human figure, while exploring various drawing
materials including pencil, charcoal, pastel, and ink. Observe and
respond to the human form in your own drawing voice.

date. If a minimum number of registered participants is not reached one week prior to the start date of any youth or adult class,

Join local mixed media artist Linda
Elkins in exploring the art of transfer
using gelatin. This printmaking
technique is known for producing
hauntingly beautiful images transferred
from everyday objects or natural elements, like leaves, flowers, or
shells. This fun technique can be used to create handmade cards,
journals, frame- worthy artwork, and more.
In this three night class, sewing guru and Luther College costume
designer Lisa Lantz will teach alteration techniques and other
practical sewing skills. Pull out that pile of clothes you’ve been
meaning to fix or alter, and wear them again! Learn or practice
hemming, darts, gussets, taking in side seams or waists, etc, by
altering the clothes you’ve brought in. Please bring your own
sewing machine.

jewelry? You’ll love this opportunity to create
one-of-a-kind wearable artworks with mixed
media artist Linda Elkins. Steam Punk Jewelry reflects the era
when steam power was the driving force of Victorian England.
This jewelry often combines old watch parts, locks, keys, and
gears, as well as science fiction and fantasy elements. Incorporate
your own collectible items into your creations along with our
eclectic offerings. No previous jewelry experience necessary.

me? Where is my magic muse? This class will show you how to

to write stories (fiction or nonfiction) using proven exercises and
techniques. Exercises will emphasize one or more key elements

Whether you’re part of service organization, a girl scout troop, or have a group of friends focused on paying it forward, you can make a
difference in your community. We’ll provide the studio space and materials - you provide the passion to champion a cause!
Previous projects include making newborn jersey knot hats out of recycled t-shirts for the Winneshiek Medical Center; fleece blankets
for the resource center serving battered women and children; note cards for residents of area nursing homes; fairy-chairs and houses
for the PAWS animal shelter fundraiser, etc.

Participants in Skape Sammen (Norwegian for “Creating
Together”) will spend the year dancing, playing xylophones, and
creating original performance pieces. Games designed to build a
shared movement vocabulary, individual and group choreography
projects, xylophone study and practice, and the creation of
original compositions for xylophone will culminate in winter
and spring performances. Inspired by the work of composer
Carl Orff and educator Gunild Keetman, we will spend the year
creating together and discovering how movement and music go
hand in hand.

KYRA BELLRICHARD, INSTRUCTOR
Kyra brings fifteen years of experience working with youth in the fields of visual art, theatre and outdoor
education. From the white beaches of Hawaii to the green mountains of Vermont, Kyra has been inspired by
the environments she has lived in and the people she has met. Outside of ArtHaus, you will find Kyra creating
at The Clay Studio, enjoying good company or being entertained by her nieces. Kyra also directed Decorah’s
own 2nd & 3rd Oneota Film Festival and is a Continuing Education Program Manager at Northeast Iowa
Community College.
RACHELLE REIS BRANUM, INSTRUCTOR
Rachelle Branum has been a key ArtHaus instructor since the beginning, and is now
the owner of The Clay Studio on Washington Street. An artist/educator with a degree in Art Education from
the University of Northern Iowa, Rachelle has experience teaching art in public schools and art centers, and as
an artist-in-residence. She worked in museum education as a docent at the Minneapolis Institute of Art and is
the former Assistant Curator of Education at the Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha, Nebraska. When Rachelle isn’t
teaching, she is making her own work through Wise Owl Designs and Simple Joys
Studios.
ANNA CRENSHAW, INSTRUCTOR
Anna has been an American Sign Language enthusiast for the past seven years. While attending MacMurray
College, where she earned her Deaf and Hard of Hearing Teacher Education degree, she lived and worked
at the Illinois School for the Deaf to build her sign skills on a daily basis. She has completed teaching
assignments at the Phoenix Day School for the Deaf and the Wisconsin School for the Deaf, and now works
full time for the Decorah School District as the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Educator.
LINDA ELKINS, INSTRUCTOR
Linda Elkins has a Bachelor of Arts in Education from Eastern Michigan University and a Master of Fine Arts in
Fiber Arts from Eastern Michigan University. Over the years Linda has taught classes in book arts, weaving, 2-D
design, papermaking, and mosaics. After retiring from her position as Luther College Placement Director in the
Education Department, Linda is focused on creating her own artworks including Steam Punk Jewelry.
ANDREW ELLINGSEN
Andrew Ellingsen teaches elementary music at John Cline Elementary in Decorah. He is a 2003 graduate of
Luther College and has his Master of Arts in Music Education from University of St. Thomas. He currently
serves as the President of the Midwest Kodály Music Educators of America and has served on the board for
Minnesota Orff. Andrew taught for eight years in Minnesota prior to beginning his current position at John
Cline Elementary. In addition to teaching Level I Movement for the Southern Methodist University Orff Course
and working with students at Luther College, Ellingsen has presented at state,
regional, and national conferences.
SARAH FRYDENLUND, INSTRUCTOR
After finishing her degree at Luther College, Sarah completed an MFA in Canterbury, England and
ran Cheltenham School of Fine Art and Crescent Artists’ Network where she organized community
projects, exhibitions, and taught courses for children and adults in drawing, painting and sculpture.
When creating her own work, Sarah explores sculpture and drawing with diverse materials and
environments. She is excited to be back in the States and in the midwest supporting the teams at
ArtHaus and the Clay Studio.

TABITA GREEN, INSTRUCTOR
Tabita Green is an avid musician and has been directing choirs for all ages since she was in high school. She
worked as a music teacher in Sweden and Atlanta, GA during the mid-90s and has taught private music
lessons off and on since then. Tabita is a native of Sweden and moved to the United States in 1995. She now
makes her home in Decorah, where she loves being a able to buy Swedish food just a few blocks from her
house.
ZOE KLOSTERBOER, INSTRUCTOR
Zoë Klosterboer, a Decorah native, graduated from St. Olaf College in May, 2011 with a BA in Studio Art.
Following graduation, Zoë stayed at St. Olaf for a fifth year to work as an Art Apprentice, mentoring students
and developing her own artwork. Zoë’s teaching experience includes a stint as Village Potter at Holden Village,
and most recently as an art instructor for kids and young adults at the Northfield Arts Guild.
LISA LANTZ, INSTRUCTOR
Lisa Lantz is an Associate Professor of Theatre at Luther College. She received a BA in Theatre from University
of Northern Iowa and an MFA in Costume Design and Technology from Southern Illinois University at
Carbondale. She designs and makes costumes for the mainstage productions in the Theatre/Dance Department
and teaches courses such as Design, Costume History, and Theatre History, among others. When she’s tires of
sewing costumes, she sews handbags and occasionally clothes for her little boy, Van.
LEA DONHOWE LOVELACE, DIRECTOR OF LITTLE MASTERS ART STUDIO
CO-DIRECTOR OF ARTHAUS
A Decorah native and a Luther College graduate, Lea has worked in the field of Art Education for over a decade.
She has worn various hats including that of a teaching artist working with diverse populations of varied ages; a
program director for a not-for-profit community art school; the manager of teacher programs at the Museum
of Contemporary Art in Chicago; and an independent contractor/consultant, connecting diverse audience
members to museum exhibitions. Lea has her Master of Arts in Art Education from the School of the Art
Institute of Chicago. In 2007 she moved back to Decorah with her family, a mere two-block commute from
ArtHaus which she co-founded with Kristen Underwood in 2008. In addition to her ArtHaus responsibilities,
Lovelace serves as visiting faculty at Luther College teaching Art Education courses through the Department of
Fine and Performing Arts.
MARTHA MONSON LOWE, INSTRUCTOR
Martha Monson Lowe is a professional basket weaver whose work is influenced by a variety of life experiences,
including living in Tripoli, Libya, North Africa as a teenager, her background in anthropology and
archaeology, and by her husband George Lowe’s pottery vessels. She loves spending time at their Washington
Cascades cabin, hiking and cross country skiing. Martha is a graduate of Luther College and returned to
Decorah after 20 years by way of Kansas, Florida, and Washington.

JUNE MELBY, INSTRUCTOR
June grew up in Decorah and then ran off to California where she became a comedian and performance poet.
She has written music to accompany her words and performed with a live band in New York, as well as in
London, Munich, Hamburg, and Amsterdam. Returning to Iowa, she received her MFA in Nonfiction from
the University of Iowa. Her writing has been heard on NPR, and published by Water~Stone Review, Versal,
McSweeney’s Internet Tendency, and National Lampoon Magazine. She is back in Decorah, and currently
working on a memoir about her family’s miniature golf course, entitled “Little House on the Astroturf.”
ALYSSA RITTER, INSTRUCTOR
Alyssa Ritter is a 2011 graduate of Luther College where she studied Art and Social Work. She loves
integrating creative projects into her daily life and work, including photography and making artwork out
of recycled and upcycled materials. For several years she served as the art director at summer camp for
children in Ferryville, WI. In addition to teaching youth visual art classes, Alyssa heads the ArtHaus Art for a
Cause workshop. Outside of ArtHaus Alyssa can be found working in the Admission Department at Luther
College and volunteering at the Clay Studio.
JULIE STROM HENDRICKSON, INSTRUCTOR
A graduate of Luther College, Julie has taught photography courses at Luther for over a decade. She started
exploring photography at a young age learning camera skills both from her mother, an art teacher, and the
local 4-H program. At age 16, Julie’s father built a darkroom in the basement of their home, further fueling
her love for photography. Julie lives and works just outside of Decorah, photographing her surroundings and
selling her work.
JOHN SNYDER, INSTRUCTOR
After living in the urban landscape of the Twin Cities for ten years, followed by the Blue Ridge Mountains of
rural North Carolina, John found his “golden plot of land” just outside Decorah in 2007 where he now lives
and works in his studio. John teaches drawing, painting, and printmaking for ArtHaus, and has facilitated a
printmaking collective, Broad Street Press, in his home studio. His striking 2-D and 3-D work has been seen
at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, in a solo exhibition at ArtHaus, and elsewhere.
JIM TRIPP, INSTRUCTOR
Jim has been teaching foreign language since graduating from Luther College in 2004. For the last few
years, Jim has strayed from the traditional grammar study method of language learning, opting instead for an
approach that seeks to immerse students in compelling, comprehensible language.

Kristen Underwood has been a theatre professional for over twenty-five years. She earned her BFA from the
University of Colorado/Boulder, and her MFA from San Francisco’s American Conservatory Theatre. As an actor
and director, Kristen has been involved in over one hundred productions for professional theatre companies
around the country, in addition to teaching theatre for CU/Boulder and Luther College, among others. After
ten years as a managing Core Artist and Director of Education for the Commonweal Theatre Company, Kristen
founded Upstart Crow Theatreworks in 2002 and ArtHaus with Lea Lovelace in 2008.
LAURIE WALTER, INSTRUCTOR
Laurie’s love of dance started during her first ballet class at the age of nine. She began her own teaching
experience at fourteen, organizing and teaching ballet and jazz classes in her hometown. Laurie graduated from
Luther College with a BA in dance and has spent the last seven years studying, choreographing, and instructing
dance in Austin, Texas. She is excited to be back in Decorah with her husband Jarrad, her daughter Kera, and
her son Davis.

The idea for Upstart Crow Theatreworks was hatched in the fall of 2002 after staging a production of “A
Midsummer Night’s Dream” with a cast of Decorah-area children. Ten years and over twenty productions later,
Upstart Crow offerings still have as their foundation, a respect for the creative impulse within each of us, and
an understanding that the skills practiced in theatre are the same as those useful in the life: good listening, an
