GOLD DIGGINGS
President’s Message
During the last several meetings we have discussed the importance of supporting our
Agility Trials. These trials bring in the largest part of the funds the club needs to support
all of its activities - conformation, field, donations, etc. I finally took my own advice and
volunteered for one day at the April Agility Trial. It was a real eye opener. For any of you
that have not participated in such an event it is hard to understand why the folks that put
on the Agility Trials are always asking for workers. Let me give you a perspective after
one day at a trial:
First, each ring requires a minimum of 10 workers —
(1) Gate Steward responsible for lining up the participants in order and making sure the
participants are ready to go at the right time to keep things moving along. (2) Leash Runner -- responsible for running the leashes from the starting gate to the
finish gate. For the faster dogs this can result in a photo finish as to who makes it to the
finish line first -- the leash runner or the dog.
(3) Jump Setters -- they are responsible for setting the jumps to the proper height and
resetting any jump that have been knocked down during a run.
Mile Hi GRC May 2016
1
Mile Hi GRC
April 25, 2016
(4) Timekeeper -- responsible for timing each run and
making sure the paperwork is on the correct dog.
(5) Scribe to write down scores and any penalties assessed
by the judge.
(6) Assistant to keep all the paperwork in order and verify
the paperwork is correct
(7) Runner that takes the completed paperwork to the event
committee for official entry
All these folks work in harmony and it is like a very well
choreographed dance. Then there are the dogs and
handlers to watch. A well trained team is amazing -- if the
moves of the handler are smooth and economical in relation
to the various obstacles (jumps, weave poles, dog walk, etc) the dog will run the course
faster and with greater self confidence. If the handler is unsure then the dog will be
slower and make mistakes.
I would encourage each of you to volunteer for a day at one of our Agility Trials. It will be
fun, vastly entertaining, educational and the people are very friendly and willing to
explain and help you understand what to do. Your participation in these events is critical
to keeping the club financially strong.
I look forward to seeing you at the next Agility Trial.

MHGRC has agreed to host a breakfast at the 2016 GRCA National. The date
selected for our club to host is Saturday, BOB Day, October 8th. If you have
ideas for breakfast items and/or you can help with the breakfast please let me
know! So far I’ve gotten input as to just having a continental type of breakfast with juice,
coffee/tea, yogurt, bagels, mini cinnamon rolls, muffins and/or danishes. Appreciate any and all input and especially volunteers that will be there to help
host the breakfast. Send info to Vickie Carson at [email protected] or give me a call 303-646-5908.

Operation Turkey Dog – Colorado Kevin Shipley, GRRR Executive Director
In late December 2015, Golden Retriever Rescue of the Rockies (GRRR) announced its
participation in the Golden Retriever rescue effort based in Istanbul, Turkey. GRRR joined
with 17 other Golden Retriever rescues in the US, to save these purebred Golden’s from
the streets and forest of Istanbul.
Golden Retrievers were once considered a status symbol by the wealthy in Turkey. As
puppy mills sprang up to meet the growing demand, the breed became less expensive
and more common and therefore less “prestigious”. This resulted in hundreds of Golden’s
being released onto the streets and forests. With only a few very crowded shelters
available, dogs of this good-natured breed frequently starve or become prey to the
thousands of feral dog packs in the forests around the city. Life is hard for these mostly
young dogs as few live to be senior Golden’s in Turkey. Of the estimated 50,000 stray
dogs in and around Istanbul, it’s believed that as many as 2000 are purebred Golden
Retrievers.
As investigated and reported by CNN and USA Today, the situation in Turkey emerged in
late 2014 when an American living in Istanbul contacted Adopt a Golden Atlanta (AGA)
after seeing an unusually large number of stray Golden Retrievers loose on the street. AGA
created and refined the process and logistics to bring these dogs to the United States in
special climate controlled 747 cargo aircraft. Before leaving Turkey, all of the Golden’s
slated for travel, are brought into a shelter where they are spayed/neutered, microchipped, receive a medical exam, a health certificate and, of course, a passport (true). So
far, the 240 dogs that have come to the US are thriving! GRRR, as with the other 97
Golden Retriever rescues in the US, have a waiting list and routinely have many more
potential qualified adopters than dogs.
This rescue project has been an overwhelming success on many levels. In addition to the
humanitarian aspect, it has energized our membership, it allowed GRRR to be involved in
the national rescue dialogue, helped make many waiting adopters happy and the media
coverage has allowed us to be a voice and advocate for the breed.
Our first homeless Golden Retrievers arrived mid-February, 2016 and were dubbed our
“Valentines dogs”. GRRR teamed with SoCal GR Rescue and brought the dogs into Los
Angeles airport. We rented a large transport vehicle and had an additional team, including
a veterinarian, following the transport. The journey started at 9:00 pm on Valentine’s Day
and travelled through Arizona and New Mexico due to weather issues and a rock slide.
The trip took 23 hours of straight through driving, stopping every 3 hours for exercise,
food and water (both dogs and humans). On the following day at 8:00 pm, greeting the
team at GRRR were dog sponsors who helped underwrite the effort and GRRR board
members.

What a scene of happy wagging tails and smiles, and the dogs were happy too. We have
been pleasantly surprised at the good overall health of the dogs. Due to living conditions,
the most common issues were ear infections and dental problems from foraging for food.
In the first week, their personalities were in full swing. Brush became "the hoarder" as he
would get busy gathering toys from all the open kennels and build his own toy empire in
his kennel. Windsor, who appeared to be the "Clark Kent" of turkey dogs by day, would
become the wild man by evening. His sophisticated turtleneck shirt, covering his
prior wound, would end up an object of tug-o-war as his house
buddies would wrestle it off his back. Each has their own unique personality. All are
spoken for by adopters. Estes, with her loving personality, was formerly left for dead, and
has ended up with the Mayor of Estes Park. Brush, was adopted by his sponsor and is
now enjoying his days at DU becoming a therapy dog and while they have found loving
homes they are working on their new English commands.
Our next group of 18 dogs are scheduled to arrive at DIA in late May and are dubbed, our
Mother’s Day dogs. Fortunately the turkey dog rescue effort is financially fully selfsustaining and does not draw donations away from our other fundraising and does not
prohibit us from taking in Golden’s from around the region.

Congratulations to all the year-end award winners!! And a HUGE THANK YOU to Jean Herbert for
her annual work tabulating year-end points, and to Sally Sjobeck and Vickie & Don Carson for
chairing the awards luncheon this year. I heard through the grapevine that it was well-attended,
even though Mother Nature didn't cooperate as planned -- we're a hardy bunch out here in the
West!!
Following are the year-end results, as will run in the GRNews in the May-June issue. Congrats
again all! Submitted By Leslie Blythe

A HUGE Thank you to all the Mile Hi members who came out and helped with our trial
this weekend. It was such a pleasant surprise to see everyone at trial this weekend and
your help was very much appreciated!!
One thing I want to add about the agility trial - Michele M. Janowiak made 3 fabulous
quilts for us to use for a worker's raffle. They were beautiful and were lusted over by the
workers. Thanks Michele for adding this special touch!
