Katie Kissed Me
by Christine Lynn Mahoney
Katie kissed me! Yuck, it’s true!
My face took on a greenish hue.
My knees, like jelly, started shaking.
Then my stomach started quaking.
Slobber slithered down my cheek.
My consciousness was growing weak.
My ears were ringing, head was spinning.
But all the while Kate was grinning.
My heart was pounding through my shirt.
My tongue felt like I just ate dirt.
Though you may think I’ve lost my brain,
I wish she’d kiss me once again!

CHAIRMAN’S REPORT (PRESENTED BY MR. N VANMALI)
Good Evening Ladies and Gentleman and a very warm welcome to you all. Our Governing Body Chairman, Mr
Jeffrey Buwa has sent his apologies for not being here this evening.
On behalf of the Chairman it is an honour for me to address you, the Principal, Educators, Parents and
Learners.
This is a special night for all of us. I would also like to extend my thanks to my colleagues on the
Governing Body and also those who were co-opted during the year. A special thanks goes to Mr Richards,
the Educators and Non-Educators for all their hard work and extra effort they have put in for the year
2005.
The Governing Body plays an important role at the school. Duties include – drawing up the Budget, Safety
and Security, Maintenance of Grounds and Building. It is also our duty to ensure that there is discipline at
our School.
In 2005 the School managed to achieved/purchase a number of things:
1.
2.
3.
4.
A new Kombi
Chairs for the school hall
A new lawnmower
A cutter for the tractors
All of this was made possible by parents paying their school fees on time. We would like to thank all of
the paying parents for their contribution.
On Monday 7 November we had our budget meeting. I would like to thank those parents who attended
this meeting. I am sure those parents have a better understanding where all the money is being spent.
School fees for 2006 are as follows :
Grade R – R3600 per annum
Grade 1 – Grade 7 and Unit Class - R3200 per annum
Listed are but a few things that your school fess go towards paying : Teachers and non-educators
salaries, water, electricity, telephones, computers, maintenance of grounds and buildings, text books,
reading books and other educators aids, transport, photocopying. Therefore, school fees play a vital role
in the running of the school. Our total expenditure exceeds R1 million per annum. I appeal to all parents
who are interested to make themselves available.
I would like to wish all the Award Winners. Well done for all their hard work, it really pays off.
I would also like to wish all the learners who are leaving C.P.S. well in their future.
In conclusion I wish you all a happy festive season and please drive safely.
Once again thank you for all of your support throughout the year and I am sure 2006 will be a really
challenging year for all of us.

STUDENT LEADERS SPEECH AT AWARDS EVENING
Good evening Ladies and Gentleman and our fellow learners. Today is a very special day for the seniors of
the school. This year will be the last year the Grade 7’s are in Primary School. Some of them are looking
forward to going to High School and some are nervous thinking about their first day in High School they
will feel like toddlers starting Pre-School.
We have learnt a lot of things at Claremont Primary School, especially discipline. Our teachers have
taught us how to behave in the school grounds and outside of school. We had to face a lot of challenges
and to do that we needed the support and encouragement from our teachers and they have given us just
that.
We will all be ready for next year because we have learnt a lot during the past few years. To our principal
Mr Richards, you have been a father, a coach and a principal to us. You have taught us many things
especially about sport. To our fellow learners, you guys have been great to look after when the teachers
are out and great to be around.
Leaving Claremont Primary School will be like leaving your whole family behind. We will look back in High
School and think of all the good memories and all the fun we had at Claremont Primary School and for the
one’s who will be staying behind we wish you good luck in your work, be successful and try your best at all
times.
Sherley Shobi
Good evening Ladies and Gentleman, teachers and learners. I know it is a very special evening for us
because some are chosen as student leaders and some of us receive awards.
Being in Claremont Primary School has been a great privilege for me, and my fellow learners. We have had
some good times and bad times here at Claremont Primary School but we have told ourselves that we’ll
always look back with a smile. I have always referred to my years here as a journey that I will go through
that will never end, but unfortunately in a few weeks that will sadly end and we’ll have to say goodbye to
our teachers, our principal and our loving and thoughtful but sometimes very naughty friends. To the up
coming student leaders I wish you nothing but good luck.
Charmaine Shobi
Good evening Ladies and Gentleman, staff and learners. Tonight we are here to present a speech on
behalf of the Student Leaders and the Grade 7 pupils who are leaving Claremont Primary School at the
end of the year.
We admit that some of us have had tough times at this school, but some of our best memories will come
from Claremont Primary School and we will always cherish them. To the educators and staff members we
would like to extend our sincere gratitude for helping and advising us throughout our school years.
To Mr Richards, our Principal and Miss Jack, our current teacher you have helped to mould and prepare us
for High School. Besides being a Principal, Mr Richards has been an excellent sports coach to the boys.
You have taught us about sportsmanship and showed us that hard work and dedication pays off.
12
At C.P.S. we are given many opportunities to show our talents and skills. We should take these
opportunities with both hands. This is what happened to me, and some of my fellow learners when we
became Student Leaders. I would like to thank all the Student Leaders for all the hard work that you did
during the year. I know that being a Student Leader is not an easy task but our spirits and enthusiasm
helped to manage us throughout the year.
I would like to conclude by saying that C.P.S. is a fantastic school and many of you learners should
appreciate what this school has to offer. We shall leave this school with unforgettable memories and
moments, but we must also remember that memories live on to fade – but never to die. With our hearts
full of sadness and tears in our eyes, we say good-bye to Claremont Primary School.
Thank you.

SPECIAL EVENTS
Public Speaking Competition
Co-ordinator: Miss J Jack
On the 27 October the Public Speaking Competition took place in the School Library. It was a competition
hosted by Miss J.Jack, the H.O.D. of Claremont Primary. In this competition the Grade Sevens had to
write speeches and say them in front of the Grade 6’s and Grade 7’s. The competitors of this competition
were Jodi, Kavesh, Bernhard and Shadrek. All these children had to choose a topic to speak about. They
were given more or less two weeks to prepare for the competition.
On the day of the competition the learners went up to the School Library to watch and listen to the
competitors presenting their speeches. The competitors were given a chance to say the speech that they
prepared. Then they were given an unprepared speech where they were given a random topic to prepare in
only five minutes and they had to talk about that topic in front of us. After the unprepared speech they
were given a poem to read. This poem was a piece taken from the book “James and the Giant Peach” called
“The Centipede’s Song. They were all good but there can only be one winner. The competition was nerve
wracking and exciting.
On behalf of the school I would like to thank Miss Walker and Miss Jack for making the competition
possible for us.

Visit to District Six and Museum
During the 4th Term the Grade 7’s visited District Six and it’s Museum that holds all it’s history. The
Museum displayed the history of apartheid and it’s effects on the “ordinary” people through an intimate
look at their stories. It is a celebration of local triumph, which resonates with all people who have
experienced marginalization. As an award winning community Museum it is considered an essential stop on
Cape Town’s tourist route. The Museum is visited daily by ex-residents of District Six, local and
international tourists and has hosted Royalty and Heads of State.
The trip was fun, educational and emotional. We walked on the torn sheets and broken bricks which once
were peoples’ homes. At the Museum our guide, Noor, told us all about his life living in District Six. We
also got the chance to ask questions (an advantage, since we had a project on District Six) and through
this we learned even more, like the movies they watched, games they played, who lived there, how happily
they lived and how they felt when their houses were torn down and they were forced to relocate, some of
them leaving behind family.
The class experienced what it was like to live in District Six, as there was a little restaurant where we
experienced the food culture, samoosas and koeksusters, a room which displayed what the houses looked
like and two small single beds. There was an olden days barber shop. The class enjoyed the trip and
learned a lot. On behalf of the Grade 7’s I would like to thank Miss Jack, Mr Richards and Mr van
Rensburg for making the trip possible.

Exhibition at Kenilworth Centre
Coordinator:
Mrs. P. Smit
On Saturday, 24th June, we held our Annual Exhibition at Kenilworth Centre. The learners’ art work and
books as well as projects and technology models were on display. Miss Durey had a special corner prepared
for the ‘little people’ while their moms went shopping.
Our teachers looked very smart in their CPS apparel whilst chatting to parents and passers-by. A great
amount of interest was shown by visitors to the exhibition and we received a lot of positive feedback
about the high standard of work done by our learners. Mr. van Rensburg ‘manned’ the Cyber Station which
was a great hit with the computer fundis.
A special thank you needs to go to Mr. Terry Pollock, Centre Manager at KC for his enthusiastic support
during this whole event. We hope to be there again next year because we believe showcasing our learners’
work encourages them to always be their best and strive to reach the top (‘Pervenite ad Summa’).

Fundraising
Coordinator:
Mrs. Y. Booysen
Fundraising was hugely successful. We had the following events for the year:
Term

Annual Birthday Walk
Big thanks to all the staff at CPS, our parents and learners for all the hard work and support. This could
not have been possible without your commitment to the school.
We also wish to thank all the parents who so faithfully donated towards our raffles and collecting lists.
Once again, Thank you and well done!

Arbor Day
Coordinator:
Mrs. Y. Booysen
It is estimated that 80% of South Africa’s people live in urban areas. If we do not start planning for
parks and trees along streets and open spaces, our children will never enjoy THE MEMORY OF A TREE!
The Unit class was invited by the Ward Counselor, Ian Iverson to plant trees in the Keurboom Park this
year. After an investigation a few years ago, it was discovered that Keurboom Park did not have any
Keurboom trees! Since then CPS has been part of this exciting mission to plant indigenous Keurboom trees
in Keurboom Park.
The learners were very excited and once they were given their tree and spade, they got right down to
doing the job!

GENERAL KNOWLEDGE
Coordinator:
Mrs. G. Africa
This extra-mural activity takes place during second interval on Tuesdays and Thursdays. During this time
learners are stimulated by playing games like Trivial Pursuit, 30 Seconds and other Quizzes. Learners are
over-excited about this pastime but this is not one of the easiest extra-mural activities as much depends
on the interest and exposure of the learners.
The extra-mural team comprised learners from the Grade 5, 6 and 7 classes; they were given various
tests in groups and as individuals. The top scorers were Shadrek Ndlwana (Gr 7), Ashante Chinyowa (Gr.
5), Ghaneefa West (Gr. 6), Simon Kahn (Gr. 6), Freddy Jokazi (Gr. 6) and Jason Wilson (Gr. 6). These
learners were selected to represent the school at the first competition which took place at Oakhurst
Primary School on 13 May.
To improve our chances of winning, we recruited more Grade 7 learners: Jodi Booysen, Kavesh Vanmali and
RJ Schroeder, to assist the team in the second round which was held at Western Province Prep. On the
12th August. Unfortunately we did not make it to the final round. It is obvious that general knowledge
cannot be taught; therefore parents are encouraged to expose their children to stimulating literature and
experiences.
This will ensure that the learners are successful and that they are prepared for national events such as
“The weakest link” and “Who wants to be a millionaire?”
To those parents who gave their moral support - a BIG thank you!

SUMMER AND WINTER SPORT
Athletics
Coordinators:
Mrs. P. Smit, Mr. E. Richards
Sports day dawned on Wednesday, 16 March 2005. The air was filled with excitement. The weather
promised to be clear and sunny. Westwood was a hub of activity with colorful gazebos going up,
refreshment stalls being set out and parents excitedly parking their vehicles under the willowing trees.
The Grade 7 class produced all the house captains, namely:
St. Leger
Jodi Booysen
Imogan Smit
Palmyra
Kavesh Vanmali
Zara Thomson
Victoria
Wiseman Mbedu
Charmaine Shobi
This year St Leger walked away with the coveted trophy, Palmyra was in second position and Victoria
trailed in the third spot. Victor Ludorum was awarded to Freddy Jokazi (Gr. 6) and Victrix Ludorum went
to Abigail Muyanga (Gr. 7). Congratulations to both the talented athletes.
Once again, this day would not have been such a huge success without the collective efforts of the
teachers and staff at CPS. Their commitment and enthusiasm ensured that a fun day was enjoyed by all!
19
Interhouse Cross Country
Coordinators:
Mrs. P. Smit, Mr. E. Richards
Concern about the weather proved to be unnecessary because we were blessed with a fabulous weather on
Friday, 16 September.
Foundation Phase took advantage of the cool morning air and ran their course successfully at Westwood.
Having prepared themselves well under the supervision of Mr. Richards, all the athletes in the senior and
intermediate phase were rearing to go. Mrs. Africa had the difficult task of keeping the restless
spectators under control (which she did with a smile); Miss Jack and a very pregnant Mrs. Smit were at
the recording desk. Mrs. Booysen, Ms Walker, Mr. Watkins (armed with his fold-up chair), Mr. van
Rensburg, Martin and Mr. Richards made their way along the route the learners were about to run.
The winners in the various age groups are as follows:

Ball Skills
Coach:
Miss S. Durey
The grade 1 and 2 learners have enjoyed their ball skills sessions this year and have participated with
enthusiasm.
In order to improve team co-operation, co-ordination and sportsmanship, new games were introduced. The
children learnt to skip and invented their own tricks. They also started playing ‘gumi’ which challenges
their memory skills.
A positive outcome of this is that these games have now become a firm favorite on the playground.

CPS had a great netball season this year. The “cherry on top” being the U/13 netball team winning the
Round Robin Tournament. The U/11 Round Robin Tournament saw CPS coming in 2 nd position. Although we
did not win the U/12 Round Robin, we proudly hosted this event which proved to be a tremendous day for
all who participated. We received many positive comments from the other participating schools about our
girls’ excellent behavior and sportsmanship. Certainly something to be proud about!
The netball inter-house was held on the 19 September with Victoria taking 1st position, St. Leger in second
place and Palmyra third. This season was thoroughly enjoyed by all learners as well as coaches. Well done
team players and a special thank you to our dedicated coaches.

Table Tennis
Coaches:
Ms. Walker, Miss Durey, Mrs. Smit
2005 saw a new sport introduced to Claremont Primary. We were very pleased to offer our learners the
opportunity to learn and enjoy the game of table tennis. It was a new experience for staff and many
learners alike. We learnt together, played together and had many laughs. Next year we hope to hone our
skills and posssibly enter our learners in a few friendly matches. Many learners show talent and we have
faith that with practice and match exposure their abilities will be refined and prove successful.

Soccer
Coach:
Mr. E. Richards, Mr. G. Watkins
Soccer is still a popular sport for the boys. They have proved to be competitive in securing a place in the
team to play matches against schools such as Grove Primary, Golden Grove Primary and Rosebank Junior.
The team performed fairly well in these matches but did lack a few skilled players who were unavailable.
Let us hope that next year all players will be available for selection as there are many talented players at
C.P.S.
The inter-house soccer matches proved a ding-dong battle and at the end Palmyra emerged as the winning
team. Congratulations!

Mini-Cricket
Coaches:
Mrs. D. Gill, Mrs. D. Albertyn
The mini-cricket team, which was made up of boys from grade 3 and 4, enjoyed many matches against
teams from other schools. We won some games and lost some but a good time was had by all.
Practices were attended regularly and the boys showed great talent for the game. We look forward to a
very successful season of cricket this spring.

Softball
Coaches:
Mrs. E. Gouws, Miss S. Durey
Softball was a big hit during the first term. We trust that as the summer season begins the same
enthusiasm and excitement for the game will be shown by the learners.
As coaches, we appreciate the team spirit and dedication of the teams. With matches against other
schools in sight we will strive to improve our game. We wish all our players a season filled with fun and
enjoyment.

Tennis
Coaches:
Mrs. N. Brey, Mrs. Y. Booysen, Mrs. G. Africa
We had a very successful tennis season. At first we had great fun and laughter, as beginners we spent
more time running after the ball than returning it with a fore/backhand drive. After hitting holes into the
air, it seemed as if we had holes in the rackets as well because the balls passed right through them, but as
time went by we saw our tennis skills improving tremendously.
The enthusiasm rubbed off on both peers and educators and we were ready to enjoy a “doubles” game. We
definitely have some budding Agassies and Sabatinies in the making.
Watch out world, here we come!

LIBRARY
READING TAKES YOU PLACES
We are so privileged at Claremont Primary School to have a most wonderful library!
Firstly I would like to thank the Governing Body for the funds allocated to the Library for the purchasing
of books. The learners are benefiting greatly from all the new books that we have been able to purchase.
Secondly I would like to thank Miss Stephen most sincerely for her invaluable contribution to the running
of the library. Miss Stephen does all the accessioning, cataloguing and covering of the books. This is a
task which takes hours of dedicated service.
I would also like to thank the learners who have acted as Librarians this year. They are : Jodi Booysen,
Bernhard McGregor, Abigail Muyanga, R.J.Schoeder, Imogan Smit and Kavesh Vanmali. They have worked
diligently during breaks and after school helping to issue and pack away books.
The Grade 4 – Grade 7 classes and the Unit Class have the privilege of visiting the Library for one hour
each week. They are able to take out books and to work on projects. Many of these learners have
developed a real love for reading.
The Library is certainly a place where learners have the opportunity to grow in knowledge and to develop
their minds in so many areas.

CYBER WORLD
Wow… the end of another year…
In the last three years, I have had to replace eight computer power supplies. Most of these computers
are about four years old. I have never before experienced power supplies ‘pop’ off with such gay abandon.
Although they are rather ‘old’, they seem to be unable to keep up the ‘pace’ expected of them. I have a PC
at home that must be about eight years old and the power supply still survives.. maybe I should not talk
too soon and be quiet. How do you know your power supply has ‘popped’ you may ask? Well normally the
computer appears to have died. The monitor power light comes on but not mush else. Power supplies would
certainly appear to be the most common PC fault. You can be 95% sure that if your PC appears to have
died, change the power supply and all should be well. It is very simple to change. Just undo a few screws,
take note when you unplug all the cables, where they came from. Go to Chaos Computers in Kenilworth (or
any similar PC shop) they will be able to sell you a new power supply for about R300. Just stick it in your
PC and all should be well. If you are a bit confused as to where all the cables plug in, just take a photo of
them with your digital camera and you will be able to see exactly where they went.
I had one rather nasty problem this year when a Hard Drive developed a short on it’s control board. This
short pulled the power supply’s 12volt rail right down. By process of elimination, (after swopping a power
supply and finding the problem still persisting) I removed the power plugs from all the drives and then
powered up the PC. It came alive, so this obviously meant that the problem was not the power supply.
After plugging the drives back one-by-one, I found out that the hard drive was faulty, I bought a new
hard drive and all was well. Thank goodness, we do regular backups, so re-instating the computer was not a
very difficult task.
We also discovered a very reasonable company that supplies educational software. I bought a Literacy
program from them and found their software and support to be outstanding. If you have a computer at
home and you would like your children to learn something instead of playing games all their lives, give
Charmaine Roynon a call at Sherston Software on 5316166, they will definitely help you and show you their
catalogue of programs.

AFTERCARE
Many improvements have been made at the aftercare this year. The outside of the
building got a fresh new coat of paint, security gates were installed, fun carpets were
bought, and a new bell was installed. A new fridge and stove was also purchased as the
previous appliances had merely seen the end of their days.
I’d like to say goodbye to Jodi Booysen, Imogan Smit and Adrian Juries who will be
leaving us for high school. Everyone at Aftercare wishes you the best of luck and will
miss you.
Thank you very much to Amanda for your hard work this year it is always great to have
someone to joke with at those times when nothing seems to be going right.
To all my other aftercare children thank you very much for your help this year, you guys
are great and deserve a nice long holiday. To my parents, thanks for bringing up great
children who have respect and manners.
Lastly from all of us at Aftercare, children included we would like to wish everyone a
happy holiday and as you can see from our picture we were a bit too excited (spot the
mistake). 

CHOIR
Coordinator:
Mrs. B. Boddington
Hitting that high note!
The choir has enjoyed learning a varied repertoire this year. African songs, songs from Walt Disney’s
“Pocahontas” and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Whistle down the Wind”, as well as some classical and popular
songs including the well known “Rhythm of Life”.
We performed for the school during Assembly in the second term. One of the songs was the popular song
“The Prayer”. This proved to be a real challenge and new linguistic experience for the learners as they
sang in Italian for the first time.
We are currently preparing for the Annual Awards Ceremony and the Choral Celebration at the end of this
year. I would like to thank Miss N. Stephen for accompanying the choirso faithfully for all our
performances.
Well done singers. Long may we continue to make music together through singing!
