Mistresses and Consorts Picture Book
No. 1, November 2014
Message to the Mistresses and Consorts
of the Masters of the Livery Companies
As your new Lady Mayoress, I am delighted
to be invited to write the introduction to the
first printed edition of the Mistresses Picture
Book, which was started online in June 2014.
It was introduced with the aim of helping to
put faces to the names of the Mistresses and
Consorts in the City of London’s 110 Livery
Companies when you meet each other events
during the year and by doing so, to create a
warm community, whose heart is in charitable
giving. I am looking forward to the year ahead

and in particular, to helping support The Lord
Mayor’s Appeal, which aims to fund muchneeded services and raise awareness of important issues for disabled people and their
families. As you may know, this year’s Appeal will help Scope and Mencap to develop two
flagship programmes.
While we are all aware of the splendid ceremonial occasions that take place in the City, it
is the continuous commitment to helping build a better world for London’s citizens that has
always been the hallmark of London’s livery companies. Dick Whittington, himself, a Mercer,
embodied this commitment and even now, it provides a line which thrives in the livery
companies, in their different charitable approaches and focuses. However, the reach of
the livery companies goes beyond the confines of London to many regions where support
is given to trades, education and professions.
I very much look forward to meeting all the Mistresses and Consorts, and I wish you a very
enjoyable year.
With warm wishes

Welcome to the 1st edition of Mistresses Picture Book
The Mistresses Picture Book was initiated by The Lady Ribeiro of the Barbers Company, who had noticed
that her husband (Master 2013-14) made a point of always carrying a copy of the Masters’ Picture Book
with him. She thought such a book would be equally useful to Mistresses, and we were joined by Suzan
Woods, then Mistress Fueller to make it all happen.
We have seized this opportunity to make a printed edition, and to distribute it to the Mistress or Consort of
every Livery Company.
If your picture appears in this booklet, thank you for your support. If you meet Mistresses of other companies
who are not yet in the booklet, please encourage them to join – and, when your year is nearing its end,
please ask your successor to send in their picture and subscription well in advance of the changeover date
– that way, there will be no awkward gap, and it will save us quite a lot of chasing.
If your picture does not appear in the booklet, we hope you will want to join. Because we do not (yet) have
a sponsor for this project, we ask for a subscription of £10 from each Mistress. To join, just send your photo
by Email to [email protected] and send your cheque made out to P. Nicholson, 9 Lynwood Avenue,
Epsom, KT17 4LQ. Your picture will appear on the liverycompanies.com website within a few days, and it
will also be in the next edition of the Mistresses Picture Book which will be distributed at the Ironbridge
weekend in June.
The project is run by a steering committee which, in addition to those listed above, includes Sarah Miles,
Mistress Actuary, and Mary Jane Donaldson, Mistress Basketmaker. If you would be interested in helping
us, please send me an email at [email protected]
With best wishes
